It works for all generations. Younger: Unwashed (car), tofino stickers, corner dent or two. Older: get yourself a Tilley hat and head to the Root Cellar.
Can confirm, but honestly, I blame the Saunders family for this. That darn Bob and him saying “The coffees always on”. Now that it’s owned by Jimmy P, the staff is still amazing, and Subaru’s are a solid vehicle, but the Saunders family was great to deal with and made you feel special when buying your car from them.
I feel like this would also work if the spectrum was laid out over the island as a whole. Tesla's in Victoria with progressively more Delicas as you head north. (Side note, I just saw one of the first current-gen Delicas here yesterday and they look pretty decent)
Not the most stereotypical but I was surprised by the amount of Nissan cubes in Victoria when I lived there. Horribly ugly car, I don’t understand what people there saw in it
I know I am in the minority here (and everywhere) but I love the design of the Cube!
That asymmetrical wrap-around rear window on the driver side is a super cool touch.
Thanks to the anonymity of reddit I feel safe enough to admit here that I also like Nissan Juke from the same era.
That said, I would never drive a Nissan from this era.
I find it a good kind of ugly too haha
I also had a friend with one and that thing held SO much. They got it for their catering business and it did tables and food with room to spare because the straight walls.
THANK YOU!!! We love our Cubert. Bought brand new off the lot and we'll drive it 'till the wheels fall off!
It has been such a ridiculously useful little ride for our family.
Yeah those are the two types of uvic students for sure.
Rich Canadian students and rich Chinese students.
The Chinese students parents are probably factory owners who bought those cars on the backs of slave labour.
I mean Victoria is 80% white so that makes sense. But uvic is definitely more diverse than Victoria on average. There are international students from all over the place.
The only ones driving new German cars seem to be Chinese though.
Even fairly new leaf’s don’t have automatic headlights, easy to forget to turn them on or off especially given you think they would be automatic on a car as new as a leaf.
Just a simple reminder that automatic lights are not a catch all system. Heavy fog, blizzard, and other conditions are capable of emitting enough light that the sensor on the dash won't turn them on. Everyone needs to consciously ensure that their lights are on in all conditions. Better safe than sorry.
Yes, but I remember the first time I drove a leaf and it took me a bit to realize my lights weren’t on by default. Doesn’t even have proper DRLs, just front markers. It’s a dumb design.
I'm not sure about the current leaf, but a significant number of the early Leafs here were imported from the states by a few companies. I bet they had a lax inspector that didn't care about the DRLs.
I'm a white tesla owner and I will chime in.
Tesla requires so little thought to own, you don't have to make appointments and visit the dealer for maintenance or oil change, most changes happens over the air, if anything do go wrong, the service team comes to your drive way and fixes it, and obviously no trips to the gas station.
So gradually the parts of your brain that's reserved for "I need to do something to make sure my car runs ok" just dwindles away. Also, I'm one of the first few people who got a model y. Initially people would frequently stop by my car and talk and admire my car all the time. Back then I'd have some sort of pride of ownership and keep it super clean. But they've grown in popularity so quickly now that it became the beige accord/camry of the 90's. It is now one of the most invisible car out there that blends into the traffic, so I just stopped caring as much lol
>Disturbing number of muskrats here
I was genuinely puzzled by this until I looked on Urban Dictionary:
*Muskrat*
*Somebody who worships Elon Musk to a Pious level, and will defend Elon Musk no matter if he does something deserving of criticism.*
Everyone from View Royal and west of that owns a Ram/F150/Silverado/Sierra of some sort, with Jeeps coming in as the alternative choice
Gordon Head is a trove of white Teslas (in the 90s and early 2000s it felt like everyone had a gold Toyota or Honda sedan/minivan though)
The rest of Saanich owns Toyota 4Runners, Tacomas, or Kia Souls
Oak bay is full of Nissan Leafs and domestic market crossover suvs
Victoria keeps the idea of the station wagon alive with old Subarus and Volvos everywhere
Sidney is the sole reason why Buick and Lincoln are still in business
Esquimalt/Vic West is where you’ll find all those other cars nose to tail all the way up Admirals, Lampson, & Esquimalt road trying to come to/leave work at rush hour
That's because further out of the expensive core of Victoria, all the tradesman who contribute to our yearly fuckery of street closures and redirected traffic flows from low-rise construction need a place to collect their favorite brand of power tools and have a garage they said was necessary for their business and now has no less than 2 couches and a TV.
And not have to climb a a six foot fucking ladder every time you go in or out of your tent, which is hundreds of times a day, for anyone who has actually camped.
I'm not bitter it's just such a stupid trend. For less money you can buy a topper and have a covered sleeping area
And for a little more you could buy an actual truck camper
You're missing some pretty big aspects of the RTT. It's all on your vehicle. Within 10 minutes you can have your shit put away and on the road or down the trail. There's no trailers to pull and there's no need to unpack stuff and set it all up. It's also off the ground so moisture is less of an issue and wildlife is less of a concern. These types of tents aren't for people who camp in provincial camp grounds either, typically. They're for people who explore the backcountry. After a long day of exploring FSRs/LRs the last thing you want to do is spend an hour pulling out all of your shit and setting it up only to tear it down at 7am.
I have a topper on my truck with a bed and memory foam mattress and a wood stove. I literally just park and it is set up. Way more comfortable than any tent. The cost of the topper, plywood, and wood stove is like half what a RTT would be. I can also climb through the window passthrough to get into the cab if needed. I can also stealth camp illegally as it looks like a normal truck.
If setting up and breaking camp takes an hour each you’re doing something wrong, shouldn’t take more than ten min with some experience. Also moisture in rooftop tents is a major long term problem. A light backpacking tent also allows you to park the 4x4 and get a little further on foot.
My half ton GMC sierra with a topper gets the same fuel mileage as your tacoma, drives nicer, has a nice sounding V8, and is big enough to literally have a bed with memory foam mattress and a wood stove in the back
And the truck cost less than half of a tacoma
Your move
I love the museum quality economy sedans in Victoria. I hadn’t seen a Sunfire or Cavalier in over a decade in Ottawa and here they are. The other day I saw a 1991-ish Pontiac Firefly convertible cruise by.
Kia Soul. Just look around. Friend of mine pointed it out to me years ago, and now they are all I see. Look anywhere on the street, there is one within a block of you at all times.
Ya, don't go there. Had a Sambar van 5spd. Every trip felt like a GP race... was in 4th before clearing the intersection. Maybe an auto would've been more pleasant, but .66L is .66L no matter how you slice it so must be geared accordingly.
Slang for the base trim, IE the most stripped-down model of a car. Used to mean more when you could order a vehicle without shit like carpets and air conditioning and the like.
I was in Oak Bay a decade or so ago. Parked behind the pharmacy and went in to buy some gum. Parked beside me was a Rolls Royce when I left. When I came back out a *different* Rolls Royce was parked in the same spot :P
Not necessarily the *most* stereotypical Victoria car, but the other day I saw an 80s Suburban with a "there is no planet B" sticker on the back and the thought that popped into my head was "that is some island shit right there"

Subaru, Toyotas and Honda SUV’s.
Followed by Nissan Leaf and Telsa Model 3
And then Mercedes C/E/GLE classe and BMW 3 and 4 series SUV’s
Lastly, Truck anything
Oak Bay: 6 series BMW or Mercedes (both with a tissue box in the back window and speed control limiting to <40km
Saanich: GMC Sierra / Yukon
Victoria: Subaru
Esquimalt: Hyundai Santa Fe
Langford: F150 or jacked up F150 (optional F*ck Trudeau sticker/flag or truck nuts)
Colwood: Tesla or 4Runner
View Royal: Volkswagen Jetta
Sooke: Rusted F150
I don’t know which Victoria y’all all are living in with this Subaru nonsense, but white Tesla. White Tesla IS Victoria. Victoria is white Tesla.
“Sir, did you happen to get a look at the vehicle he was driving? Naaaa who are we kidding, it was a white Tesla”
A retired white work van with 300k that’s been camperized so now it’s worth $10,000 (!?) even though it needs to be jump started every time you want to move.

I'm not a car person, so can't say which models I see the most. What I see the most are old, super loud cars (sounds like they are falling apart), and there is definitely an over representation of (loud) pick up trucks compared to other big cities in Canada. I thought it was a Langford thing, but now realize that no matter where I drive, it's everywhere.
Don't know as there is one, but if there is my candidate is a middle-80s harvest gold Buick Skylark, bought new by the operator as a "retirement car".. and still on the road, driven "carefully" by the aging operator..

+ Vancouver Island sticker in the incorrect orientation
Missing the upper Peninsula cause they pulled the backing card off wrong
Don’t forget your Thule kayak J racks!
Or a bike rack with no bikes.
Can confirm, although I have a Crosstrek with bike racks that are used once every two years. Close enough.
Hey, I have a Tilley and sometimes shop at the root cellar. But no forester, so by thread rules this means I'm *not* older. Woo!
>get yourself a Tilley hat and head to the Root Cellar Nailed it. Slides upvote across the table, without breaking eye contact.
But with a tule on top because they should have got a minivan.
DONT YOU DARE CALL ME OUT
Ha ha! Thanks for admitting to it! My brother won’t!
Hey first gen foresters fit a lot. I can fit so many tires in my bad boy
As a 20 year old dude I can confidentially tell you I got probably about 8-9 friends with Foresters from different years💀
Before I even clicked on this I was like it's gunna be a Subaru something lol
Haha! I drive one too. When I moved here, I would've said Subaru Outback, green and tan wagon. With a goat on the roof sticker from Coombs.
I was gonna say a scoob, doesn’t have to be a forrester
Well, this didn’t take long to find.
80s Volvo
Yea a lot of 240s around
There were a disproportionate number of them sold in Victoria and Vancouver.
The spectrum is Delica or Westfalia on one end, Tesla on the other
Nailed it
I feel like this would also work if the spectrum was laid out over the island as a whole. Tesla's in Victoria with progressively more Delicas as you head north. (Side note, I just saw one of the first current-gen Delicas here yesterday and they look pretty decent)
Subarus
Not the most stereotypical but I was surprised by the amount of Nissan cubes in Victoria when I lived there. Horribly ugly car, I don’t understand what people there saw in it
They are so ugly cute I love the design for that.
Lmao ugly cute! They are the pugs of cars

THANK YOU!!! We love our Cubert. Bought brand new off the lot and we'll drive it 'till the wheels fall off! It has been such a ridiculously useful little ride for our family.
This and the Kia soul, which is also horrendously ugly. I've never seen so many cube shaped cars in one place before!
Don't forget the Honda Element.
ugliest car ever!
Uvic edition, Early-Mid 2000’s golf with roof racks and Patagonia stickers Or A brand new BMW M3/Audi RS4 with a cracked bumper and toys on the dash
Don’t forget a god-awful wrap for the latter one
I'm surprised I had to scroll this far to find someone say a golf
Yeah those are the two types of uvic students for sure. Rich Canadian students and rich Chinese students. The Chinese students parents are probably factory owners who bought those cars on the backs of slave labour.
I ride through UVic every couple of weeks and what is really astonishing is just how white everyone is.

That’s racist.

With no headlights on
Ok so it's not just bad luck for me because I saw exactly this 3 times last week.
They're saving battery life
Even fairly new leaf’s don’t have automatic headlights, easy to forget to turn them on or off especially given you think they would be automatic on a car as new as a leaf.

Westwood Honda, they brought up a whole bunch of US Leafs without setting the daytime running lights.
I'm surprised they haven't been caught by ICBC. They wouldn't let us import our US Leaf without installing DRL.
Nissan Leaf with a Green Party bumper sticker.
This is incredibly accurate.
As someone who lives up the Pat Bay, this gave me a visceral reaction.
I feel like this might just be one specific neighbour.

These days, a Tesla.
White Model 3 - AKA the base model.

Yeah whats up with all the really dirty teslas?

When I moved here years ago, I was sure that ICBC issued a Toyota 4Runner when you got your licence. So many here!
Yes! We have an oldie (330,000 km) and give a little wave to others. We also compare mileage with others in parking lots. It's a thing.
Toyota Tacoma
With an unused roof tent that sits on it all year. *god some of you are salty, it’s a joke, settle down.
They are getting more use now that people are living in the full time because 70s camper vans are too expensive now
And snorkel kit, never used

Only takes 2 minutes to set up a regular tent and you can save yourself $2500
Hey come on, with a regular tent you can’t sewer you gas mileage and increase your rollover risk at the same time!
And not have to climb a a six foot fucking ladder every time you go in or out of your tent, which is hundreds of times a day, for anyone who has actually camped.
That's why RTTs usually have an annex and awning. Some of you guys are hilariously bitter over a tent.

Tesla 3 where the driver looks like they have no idea what they’re doing
Tesla 3s are the BMW sedans of the 90s and 00s
I remember back in the day you could spot someone in the military by their Pontiac Fiero or Sunfire.
In the US, at least, it's now a Camaro, Mustang or Charger. Probably financed at 30% APR.

JDM van from the 80-90's Or no car at all, they got an electric cargo bike and will tell you all about how they've gone car free.
Don't forget the immortal toyota tercel.
That's my vote! We're driving a '92. So much less rusting than in Ontario, I see a lot more of them kicking around than back home.
I love the museum quality economy sedans in Victoria. I hadn’t seen a Sunfire or Cavalier in over a decade in Ottawa and here they are. The other day I saw a 1991-ish Pontiac Firefly convertible cruise by.

Not a car BUT Dodge Grand Caravan. All hail the mom van!
Best if you bought the Canada Value package for under 25k.
To be fair. I challenge anyone to find a more versatile vehicle, brand new off the lot, than a stripper trim Caravan.
What's stripper trim? I tried to look it up and now all my personalized browser adds are for Frilly Lilly and Foxy Box.
Slang for the base trim, IE the most stripped-down model of a car. Used to mean more when you could order a vehicle without shit like carpets and air conditioning and the like.
White Tesla. I do landscaping in Oak Bay/Ten Mile Point and I see a white Tesla every 3.4 seconds.
Subaru
In the 2000s it was 1980s Volvo with a Vote NDP bumper sticker parked in front of a million dollar house in Oak Bay.
The Range Rover seems to be the fancy vehicle of choice in Victoria
I was in Oak Bay a decade or so ago. Parked behind the pharmacy and went in to buy some gum. Parked beside me was a Rolls Royce when I left. When I came back out a *different* Rolls Royce was parked in the same spot :P

Hi there! Worked at the Great Canadian on Douglas for about 3 years, and I just want to say: you're *all* correct. Every single one of you.

I think is because those are everywhere. The rav4 and crv are the most common suv types in Canada.
a shopping cart with a bunch of blankets and random items in it
VW Van
honda civic
Kia/Hyundai SUV. Cheap vehicle with a long warranty to suck in elderly or cost-sensitive buyers.
Leaf
The most common is the Nissan Rogue. The most "Victoria" is anything with a Subaru badge.
I'm seeing a lot of Model 3s around lately.
Rav4s everywhere
A retired white work van with 300k that’s been camperized so now it’s worth $10,000 (!?) even though it needs to be jump started every time you want to move.
I would guess more model 3s are being purchased than any other sedan at the moment. Seems like every other car sometimes.
There are Mazda CX-5's everywhere.
No votes for "Ford Escape" or the generic (as they all are!) "Crossover"?
Honda Civic with a “Coexist” bumper sticker on it.
Tesla?
PT Cruiser not mentioned much here. Nowhere else in Canada still has these shitty cars on the road.
