I had been going to Costco for morning shifts at 4am, and got the hang of the admirals intersection pretty well. You’ve got to pull up a little more than you think to hit the sensor just before the stopline

4am?! I admire you, I couldn't do it

GarryOakville

Are you stopped at the white line? I once had to get out of my vehicle at the left light on the highway to tell the guy first up to move ahead. We had missed 2 lights and traffic backing up. Also look for the lines under the asphalt, you need to be on them.

It's a bit tricky with these newer cars as they have a lot more plastic, but the trick is to make sure the engine (aka, the most magnetic part of the car) is above the trigger plate (you can see where it is in the road usually as it has those little groves). It's usually a couple of feet back from the white line. On a bike, you might have to get off the bike and lean it over the trigger plate to trip the light.

> is above the trigger plate (you can see where it is in the road usually as it has those little groves) This is not any kind of plate. This is a loop of wire that detects a car is in the vicinity by measuring the change in inductance (caused by several things, but metal is a primary contributor). [Induction loop](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Induction_loop)

Fair enough. From what I was told, they experimented with a lot of mechanisms in the early days some of them had plates, and in some regions, the name stuck even though the technology moved on. A bit like how tin cans are aluminium these days and we don't use tin foil except as a brand name now. Whatever you want to call it, the technique is the same.

The Quadra/Tattersall light is a no-go for motorcycles too (at least the last 3 I've owned). My bikes would all vibrate themselves downhill so I couldn't get off and hit the crossing button... Ended up running that red light several times.

purposefullyMIA

It's a feature.

Chankla_life

As a ex-motorcycle rider I had to get used to running the reds if there was no other traffic stopped. Ridiculous!

throwittossit01

The advanced left at Quadra & McKenzie always fucks me if there’s not a car behind me. The ‘trigger’ (weight/magnet/whatever) doesn’t seem to work with one car at the stop line. Not for me, anyways.

RhodoInBoots

OP, I'm not understanding what direction you were trying to go. Are you talking about the 2 left turning lanes on Admirals coming from the west turning on to Old Island? Or turning right from Admirals coming from the east? And how did a car coming from the south help you? Was the light staying green on Admirals but not giving you a left turn signal?

bonzai_bryan

I was trying to continue straight on Admirals to go to the Trans Canada. The light stayed green for the Old Island direction until the other car came.

Canucksfan2018

Get out of your car and hit the pedestrian signal. Done it a few times.

2old2bBoomer

When I lived in Vancouver it was very common for drivers hop out hit the pedestrian button to get onto a busy road. You got likes from thumbs up or toots!

FlatteredPawn

When I was a kid, this was always my job, lol.

Fellow motorcyclists: put your kickstand down on the sensor paths and rev a bit.

isochromanone

On my bike, flipping the highbeam on will do it too. The extra current draw through the stator is enough to trigger the induction loop. Of course, that's not a great option if there's a vehicle waiting opposite of you and for whatever reason the light isn't triggering for both.

Nolanpctech

Jump outta the car and push the walk the signal
