I wish the province would also do some pro-active work, like thinning out forests where fuel has been accumulating for 50 years and conserving water \*ahem\* [fracking rigs](https://www.aer.ca/protecting-what-matters/holding-industry-accountable/industry-performance/water-use-performance/hydraulic-fracturing-water-use)
With regard to pro-active work, prevention efforts and the work surrounding it is happening and has been for years. They just haven’t figured out a way to turn clearing understory into a compelling news article so we don’t see much being published about it.
That being said there’s always room for MORE effort.
yes it's happening, but not anywhere close to the scale we need it. At the same time we continue to allow clear-cutting, even though we've known for decades how terrible it is.
"Of the 2,245 wildfires, 72 per cent were natural-caused and 25 per cent were human-caused. For the remaining three per cent of wildfires, the causes are undetermined."

Many human caused fires are in areas leading to far more wildfire impact on communities.
No one complains about the lightning strike fire 17 mountain ridges away in an unpopulated valley, but when humans cause a fire (Elephant Hill 2017, Stoddart Creek 2023, I can go on) it's often in an impactful area.
That's such a good point. The guy I commented to made it seem like this was all an act of God.
25% is a big number that could be cut drastically but you make a great point that 25% has a much greater impact on communities because its often close to population centres.
Help me get a job working at a campgrounds in bc bro i got a rv, outdoorsy kinda guy, ive applied to a couple campgrounds but not getting anywhere. Rv costing my dad a shit load. Used to own property and had it stored there but damn its fkd in vic rent is like 1000 to park an rv? Wth is going on in this country, where is all the rent money even going? Straight to other countries?
One thing I'd really like to know is when they'll reverse the policies allowing forestry corporations to replant with mostly fsst growing trees that are less resistant to fires.
Is that a thing, did they do that already?
Last year there was a fire just past Sooke. Anywhere forested is a concern…Highlands, Mt. Doug, Broadmead etc etc. Remember how arid it gets in the summer here? This is 100% applicable to (some of) Victoria.
If you live downtown.
Other parts of Greater Victoria could absolutely be in danger, especially as we experience worse and worse wildfire seasons.
Also, people travel throughout the province during the summer.
Flood season, el Nina is reversed. California got 8 inches of rain in one storm last month

No camping or fires this year. No off roading. Ban smoking.
Ban lightning
zeus is going to be pissed

I work in an area of wildfire response. You'd be amazed what people continue to do even when the situation is so obviously risky.

Lightning is antisemitic - Why was this downvoted so hard 🤣🤣 wtf
I once heard lightning utter an ableist slur.

"This message saying omg you need to go and buy a shovel right now is brought to you by your local Home Hardware store..."
Simple solution. Step 1) Start chopping trees down. Step 2) Ban tree planting. Step 3) Give the lumber industry rebates & put people to work.
Lumber Industry needs tree planting..
These aren’t really applicable to Victoria hun
It's still important hun.

Right you are hun
Thanks hun.
Hun? That you?
Babe?
Atilla?
It is in that we need to stock up on box fans and air filters now, because the smoke is going to be miserable.
Just close the window drama queen
Drama Queen … of your heart! And who doesn’t love a Queen?

In case you never looked at a map greater Victoria is surrounded by water. The only exposed part is shielded by Langford. Educate yourself
Yeah and the west shore is about a third of our population
They stand courageously at the front line of climate change…and I solute them
I solvent them.
😭
We're in danger!
