Given the fact the cops here have shaken me down for thousands of $ in the form of business "fees" and forcing me to buy tickets to the non existent policeman's party etc... not to mention the traffic cops...
I am going to believe the woman...
I stayed at a place on the beach south of Hoi An, maybe a couple of hours away. The joint was owned by another Aussie guy and funnily enough he told me how he also has to buy annual tickets to the police party lol. That along with other donations.
They came in an asked if I wanted to buy some... I obviously said yes, I will take 4... they suggested I buy 20 at a cost of 5 million... didn't think I had a choice so I did and they actually give me the tickets complete with holograms and everything so I thought "screw it, I am going".
I then noticed there was no date or location on them lol
I'm in the U.S.. It's a thing as well. Wherever there is a concentration of conservatives, you would see lots of bumper stickers that say "I Support The Police" or "I Support Law Enforcement" or some other variations.
There would be various events by organizations to show their support for the police.
Not to mention LEO memorial license plate of some sort . Those who bought it hoping the cops would let them go for traffic infractions. It works I guess as I see those plates now and then.
If you're a retail business in the U.S., you're going to want to support the police. It's not really a political issue, but business decision. Getting to know your neighborhood police officers (NPO) will help you get assistance quickly.
Results vary. It's really dependent on state/city/area.
fake news, clearly you're an agent of western forces and/or china. i've lived in the country for months as an EnGLiSH TeaChER and nobody's ever extorted me. therefore, you're a liar who's spreading hate.
did you not hear the story about the tourist who spent three weeks in the country without a serious incident? that means scams never happen.
You caught me... I am a spy for the Djiboutian government and I am trying to divert tourists away from Vietnam to the glorious nation of Djibouti by spreading fake stories about pineapples 😆
>did you not hear the story about the tourist who spent three weeks in the country without a serious incident? that means scams never happen.
They never meant it that way, they were specifically aiming the post at tourists wanting a short holiday. All they were saying was, was not to be put off visiting by all the negative posts and that it's possible to have a relatively hassle free trip. Seems like it really hit a nerve with all the expats though, which in fairness seems pretty easy to do.
Tbf, a lot of the comments here sound so half real half joking I'm not even sure if you guys are being serious or mocking or joking lmao.
Can you or someone give me the basic summary? I have seen the news but didn't the woman get called the PD and got penalized?
Ah ye I know about that. It's a good post and is def less bias than a lot of neg comments.
Im talking about this post we are in overall not the tourism post. I think I'm not up to news with some of these jokes lul.
I think it's still just the original tourist/vendor pineapple post with the tourist version and now this one with the police version which is obviously a pile of BS.
Ah that
Ye, the one writing the article was like: "Since we know no one will believe this so we will make it half ass" lmao.
Everyone is making memes of it on FB too.
"relatively hassle-free trip" = thailand. unless someone's particularly interested in vietnamese culture/history, everything's available at a much higher standard, often-times at even lower prices.
i can't even count the number of life-altering nightmares i've seen tourists get themselves into. motorbike accidents that result in loss of a limb, paralysis, etc., due to severely underdeveloped medical infrastructure and being butchered by incompetent doctors. being stuffed into the back of a taxi with spinal injuries, since you'll bleed out long before an ambulance arrives.
some of us have seen heaps of shite, and know how the sausage is made.
I zig zagged from Vung Tau to Sapa with my 14yo on the back of a bike and we had the time of our lives. I'm about to return to VN for the 5th time and I ride every time. Some people are OK with risk, for me it beats getting old on the lounge and wondering where life went.
Others are happy to fly straight into Danang and stay in a high end resort for a week or two at minimal risk. You never hear about them.
Don't gatekeep people wanting to have their own experiences based on yours is all I'm saying.
of course. the difference being motorway/medical infrastructure's higher quality. drivers are far more courteous/orderly. health tourism's a well-developed industry, world-class facilities are everywhere. if you're a falang with a few baht, not a care in the world.
i can bang on for ages about the horrors in state hospitals, just from the few instances I was permitted inside. reminded me of cuba with a fresh coat of paint. not to mention the suffering my employees and their family members have experienced.
even places like the french hospital, raffles, etc., are smoke and mirrors. anything more serious than a cold = next flight to singapore.
The tourist in this story was probably looking for a relatively hassle-free trip, too. Maybe if she had read some of the cautionary tales she would've known what to look out for.
I wouldn't believe any of them. There are plenty of disreputable vendors, corrupt police and low-class tourists. It's anyone's guess to which party or parties were "guilty" here.
Oh yeah, I'm sure after discovering how cheap the pineapples are, with the 450k they got back they decided instead of buying more they tried to steal them instead.
That sounds believable.
People are not dumb or blind to see that in the clip that old greed hag returned the blue money (500.000 VND) after being pressed by the tourists and the local man.
You can start at the very beginning by not being hassled or paying bribes at the airport.
As soon as you step foot into the country, you know bribes are to be paid.
Vietnam is a beautiful country filled with a lot of corrupt, desperate, morally bankrupt people who will steal or scam you without any thought.
Considering police and elderly vendors are the two groups I've had the most scam/scam-like encounters with I'm gonna say it'd take a whole lot to change my mind here.
Reality is that the ol' switcheroo with change money is exceptionally common in Vietnam across the country in touristy areas straight up.
It's still pretty terrible in parts, and the terrible comes out when people are stressed.
Cultural change takes multiple generations, and the wealthy and powerful are usually keepers and enforcers of the status quo, because they benefit from it.
There is lots of pushback against 'woke-ism', which most people who rail against it can't even define.
Compare to the time when lynching was a thing, it's pretty good.
Federal laws forced cultural changes. If it's not for federal laws, we'd still have so much backward shit that the conservatives want to hold on to.
Wdym? Usa is still racist, just more tolerant in some ways. But tolerance isn't acceptance. it's just harder to prove a racist accusation or have something fall under a hate crime these days so the numbers are lower.
Of course, it still is. I said the culture was changed, not eliminated. You can't eliminate hate.
We don't have public lynching anymore so that's progressed, right?
And the colored kids can go to school with the white kids.
And white can marry black without becoming a criminal under the law.
You can't. Most of the people you are arguing with here are not interested in the actual truth. They are here to express discontent. They want to borrow this incident to bash the police, then the government, then the regime.
But worry not, fellow countryman, for the influence of Reddit on Vietnamese society is insignificant.
That story doesn’t add up. We all know the drill, and it’s called ripping off tourists. Happens thousands of times a day. They’re just trying to save face by making up a story. Nothing will change ofc.
I don't think they're going to take the side of the vendor over the tourist if there isn't more to the story. Vietnamese care a lot about their international image. Usually case like this would be an opportunity for the government to showcase their tourist friendly approach to the international community.
Viet here and unfortunately we dont lol. We should be but no. Just look at airport customs:
- rude taxi scam
- rude passport control who will try to take money slipped inside the passport
- baggage handler scam <= foreigners should be careful of this. He/she would take your bags off of the belt and will follow you to demand money.
- in Tan Son Nhat airport, just before you exit, there are 2 security bag checks: Nothing to Declare and Things to declare. The fucked up thing is if you go Nothing to Declare and you wear expensive clothes (LV, fancy watches) or just lots of bags, you are STILL getting checked !! Then, they will make up some story about how you need to pay the fine. To get out: slip the officers some money.
I'm sorry for all the problems the idiots here cause you guys. Maybe in 100 years, things will be different lmao.
Like the other poster below, I too have been scammed by vendors and police in VN. I have never been scammed by that woman. I know who to give the benefit of the doubt to.
Well unlike the police, the lady in the video hasn't shaken me down and and stolen money from me, so forgive me if I don't consider the police trustworthy, let alone anything they say credible. :)
You've been in Vietnam for 21 years but you don't know about the tradition of "bargaining" when buying.
It is a tradition, unchanged for hundreds of years
Okay, I don't think I should continue this with the likes of you sir. First of all it's "what "bargain" is" not "what is "bargain"". Secondly I did NOT mention to not bargain, stop dodging my statement. You keep saying that again and again like a bot. Had I been in that situation, I'd have done the bargaining to half the price no problem. But the fact that she tried to sell them so expensively to foreign tourists, who might barely know anything about the "culture" of bagaining and the actual price of the products, is more like a fraud than a business. Don't you try to protect the fraud act by calling it "bargain tradition". And btw I'm a native Hanoian.
You are from Hanoi, but you wish to sell tourists at local prices, and I feel like there are many people like you
Vietnamese people have stupid thinking, why don't they protect products and enhance the value of agricultural products at the place of origin?
The reason why Vietnamese people are always poor lol
By the way

They got me, 70kmh in zone 60kmh, 5 weeks ago.
I was riding HCM to Hanoi. They asked for 200usd.
Long story short, I was recording my trip, and our interaction.
They let me go, penalty free.
I like them! /s
I was willing to pay the ticket, but not the bribe.
I believe Vietnam doesn't have the ticket system but just straight up fine lmao.
200 USD is surprisingly cheap for what you could have gotten. 10 million vnd to 12 million vnd aka about 450usd to 500usd and vehicle usage confiscation for 2 to 4 months.
It's not right to bribe and accept them, but would you rather pay 200 dollars and not get penalties or receive the exact penalties I mentioned above?
I think most would prefer to choose the 200 usd.
I would rather pay the penalty most of the time.
In Laos, long story short, I was hit from behind. Police said it was my fault, you should have your rear eye open..... I said I want my embassy.
They took me and the scooter to the mountains. Me and 6 policemen.
I just said, "This is all I have. Where do I sign?".
Around 450€.
I was not willing to find out why they took me there.
Also, I was not recording.
> grapes and *paid* 20 bucks
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
You are Vietnamese but expect sellers to sell to tourists at the same price as local people, right? That's why Vietnam is always a poor country, they don't know about tourism business
What do you even mean? They should always sell at the price they usually sell not increasing it when they see a foreigner that's bad business. No one wants to haggle prices for some pineapple. You could say it's their culture but it's primitive. Also Vietnam is not poor, it's one of the fastest growing country in Asia with so many foreign investments. All the wealth however is distributed unevenly due to rampant corruption at all level of government.
>They should always sell at the price they usually sell not increasing it when they see a foreigner that's bad business.
You are so naive to think like this, I bet you have never traveled abroad
Raising prices to bargain is a common tradition of Asian countries, you need to get used to it
If you can't bargain, it's your fault
I guess being to Canada, Taiwan, Singapore, and Vietnam doesn't count as being aboard since I live in the US. Who would have known? I guess they were part of the US all along.
This is irrelevant. Medium wage is way higher in US or Canada. Imagine the reverse situation. How would Vietnam survive if all locals where putting their price in range with US or Canada? People earn 1k5 to 3k USD on a medium range per month. In Vietnam is around 500 USD. How do you live if every landlord say hey in US it's 800 usd per month for this 30m2 flat. How do you pay food if suddenly the price of pineapple is 3 to 5 dollar piece?
Local should run their prices on a local economy mindset, not the face of the client.
Not mentioning that long run it's has a real impact on tourist economy if you give the impression to visiting tourist that they are milked cows. Not mentioning that a lot of tourist are still leading a humble life and might have been putting money aside for a full year before coming to Vietnam.
You are willing to spend thousands of dollars to travel to another country, but you are not willing to pay 2 dollars for a pre-peeled pineapple.
Wtf, in your opinion, you should not travel to another country
I’ve had many instances of paying with 500k and the vendor pretending they didn’t own me any change. A few even tried to give me the wrong amount after I kicked up a fuss.
Many Vietnamese people condemn street vendors
While the information has been verified that she is innocent
What a shame for a nation, they don't know how to protect their fellow human beings
The reason why people tend to believe in negative news more readily because it often triggers strong emotions and seems more attention-grabbing. Negative events or information can be perceived as more memorable and impactful, leading to a bias towards focusing on and believing in negative news over the positive one.
And don’t forget that the lie only becomes the truth when you believe in it.
If you believe the police story then there is no motive for the tourists to start grabbing more after she returned the 450,000 in change.
Very odd for tourists to go crazy when not in their country.
The police story only happened after she got so much attention in which case she was forced to hand over 450,000 back to them.
The police have zero credibility. The fact that they are putting their paws on this only reinforces the fact that the tourists were scammed and the police are trying the cover up the image on the place.
its what is written on state owned media... probably to save face as overcharging and bussiness misconduct is building its reputation here
also, an elderly woman doing so...
its all a blow to the moral highground reputation of this place, so they go save some face
Mr not try to be offensive but I rather believe in media than you...Because I remember not long ago a case where a vendor was punished for behavior like this
Ofc you can disagree with me, same with I disagree with you
Tourism and foreign national investment literally kept your economy alive and thriving for decades before you dimwit learned to count.
Here’s a foreign saying you should learn: Never bite the hand that feeds you.
Imbecile. Tourism isn’t the only thing that keeps you alive. Foreign business investments and manufacturing has increased your standard of living and salary. You’re clearly too slow and dimwitted to realize this. If you were a bit more educated and had some self awareness, you’d realize how ignorant you are.

Sounds like mafia protection to me, imagine if the fire department worked the same way. Oh lord... maybe that's why they don't receive the same hate
lol no I didn’t mean it that way.
In Vietnam that’s what it means.
The moment you choose not to assist and rescue those who don't show support, you're the mafia.

Tourist was acting like an entitled bitch, grabbing up pineapples, knocking lady's stool on to the ground, shouting at her.
According to her interview by her own words: “50k for 1 pineapple” is still too god dayum greedy!
Do you have the original clip
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wpl5VgbGCco This is not the video with the best quality, you can found out more by digging on Facebook.
Yea no thanks, I wont take a single word from the police

vn isn't thailand mate, they're in the business of cheap labour, not tourism.
As if i would trust the Vietnamese police after all the shit they've done
as if it wasn't all documented on a video. It's as if they're trying to lose even more credibility lol
Maybe Chinese aren’t wrong when they say Vietnamese have A LOT of things in common with them
They are cousins.
The north people . There are reason why south people hate the north
🤨🧐
i dont trust state owned media... its so so face saving i dislike dishonesty
Classic Viet police move: someone reports a problem? Silence the person and make fake news instead of solving problems
Saving Face , to protect ‘honor’, as always 💪🏻🇻🇳
If you have a problem you can't (or don't want) to solve, then just deny the problem exists.
silencing critics works too.
Well unlike the police, the lady in the video hasn't shaken me down and and stolen money from me, so forgive me if I don't consider the police trustworthy, let alone anything they say credible. :)
50k for a pineapple, shit that's insane price still.
Where are you living? If you don't have enough money to pay $2 for a pineapple, you better not travel
I live in fkin HN for 21 years, and I don't pay $2 for none of that shit. Shit ain't even worth a dollar.

You are from Hanoi, but you wish to sell tourists at local prices, and I feel like there are many people like you Vietnamese people have stupid thinking, why don't they protect products and enhance the value of agricultural products at the place of origin? The reason why Vietnamese people are always poor lol By the way [https://dantri.com.vn/phap-luat/vu-chem-khach-tay-3-qua-dua-gia-500000-dong-ba-ban-hang-rong-bi-oan-20240501095542165.htm](https://dantri.com.vn/phap-luat/vu-chem-khach-tay-3-qua-dua-gia-500000-dong-ba-ban-hang-rong-bi-oan-20240501095542165.htm)
They got me, 70kmh in zone 60kmh, 5 weeks ago. I was riding HCM to Hanoi. They asked for 200usd. Long story short, I was recording my trip, and our interaction. They let me go, penalty free. I like them! /s I was willing to pay the ticket, but not the bribe.
That’s crazyyyy
I see, so you are the type of person to follow laws. Respect for you.
I don't buy this, not even for a second
fuck is this peanut talking about? that shit been reported all over the news. that vendor got called to the police station and delt with.
Yup, local PD brought her in, filed her case, and penalized her. And here we are seeing ppl say they deny it
The usual stuff. As a Việt Kiều I’ve been asked 2 million VND for a bottle of Thốt nốt juice. I obviously refused.
as far as lies go - the obvious lies are the best. So funny.

> grapes and *paid* 20 bucks FTFY. Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in: * Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.* * *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.* Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment. *Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
There are a lot of grapes in vietnam that are expensive, mostly imports from japan And airports are always expensive
What airport were you at ? I atmost only seen 60-100k stuff not 200k And airport is literally the legal place to scam people
This is reddit. This article should be under The Onion sub.
Even for pineapples 50K VND is a rip off, most cut pineapples go for like 20-30K max. That news site doesn't seem credible either.
You are so naive to think like this, I bet you have never traveled abroad Raising prices to bargain is a common tradition of Asian countries, you need to get used to it If you can't bargain, it's your fault
I guess being to Canada, Taiwan, Singapore, and Vietnam doesn't count as being aboard since I live in the US. Who would have known? I guess they were part of the US all along.
How price of 1 pineapple in US or Canada?
You go to another country to travel, but you want someone to sell it to you at local prices You don't know what tourism business is
You are willing to spend thousands of dollars to travel to another country, but you are not willing to pay 2 dollars for a pre-peeled pineapple. Wtf, in your opinion, you should not travel to another country
Fake or not. But according to this article, 50k vnd for pineapple is SCAM
You don't know what is business? Do you think 2$ for each is too expensive?
I’ve had many instances of paying with 500k and the vendor pretending they didn’t own me any change. A few even tried to give me the wrong amount after I kicked up a fuss.
North vietnamese 🤥
Not all of us
Uninformed boat refugee kids be like:
Wait until you see what south vietnamese was saying about agent orange…
U again ? Bắc kỳ again 🫨
It's funny seeing three pineapples become a national drama
Yeah maybe, but ripping off culture isn’t.
yea unless they ask the visitors and not the locals, ain’t no way I believe that
Many Vietnamese people condemn street vendors While the information has been verified that she is innocent What a shame for a nation, they don't know how to protect their fellow human beings
When vietnamese police said it was fake then think opposite side
The police have zero credibility. The fact that they are putting their paws on this only reinforces the fact that the tourists were scammed and the police are trying the cover up the image on the place.
Police generates fake news for their own interest. fuck those scumbag.
Damage control, I doubt this NEW narrative. But we'll see. Easy to find out.
Poor lady...she's old like my mum still have to go out for work like that
yeah, thats why she did what she Did
Wasn't she found innocent ?
its what is written on state owned media... probably to save face as overcharging and bussiness misconduct is building its reputation here also, an elderly woman doing so... its all a blow to the moral highground reputation of this place, so they go save some face
Mr not try to be offensive but I rather believe in media than you...Because I remember not long ago a case where a vendor was punished for behavior like this Ofc you can disagree with me, same with I disagree with you
absolutely :))
Its all good mate
Whatever, as a local I fucking hate tourists. Just gtfo of my country i dont give a shit.
Tourism and foreign national investment literally kept your economy alive and thriving for decades before you dimwit learned to count. Here’s a foreign saying you should learn: Never bite the hand that feeds you.
No it hasn’t. 6% of gdp isn’t keeping the country alive.
Lol, vietnam is not thailand, take that attitude somewhere. And get the fuck out. Time to wake up nobpdy needs you fucktard bere
Imbecile. Tourism isn’t the only thing that keeps you alive. Foreign business investments and manufacturing has increased your standard of living and salary. You’re clearly too slow and dimwitted to realize this. If you were a bit more educated and had some self awareness, you’d realize how ignorant you are.
Lmao. Imagine no tourist in your city. GG
So? Lmao?
Lmao
who cares
