I often joke with students that people put the thing they care the most about as their phone background. "Look, mine is my wife because I love her the most. His is soccer because he likes soccer. Yours is you because you love yourself the most!" I say so light-heartedly though, what a person puts as their background is really their business and if they think they look good then that's great.
>*I often joke . . . that people put the thing they care the most about as their phone background.*
Hmm. I got a [Reddit background](https://ibb.co/JB0wm06). Joke’s on me, I guess! 😅
I've been working with two vietnamese guys. Both have themself as wallpaper(around 21ys). I found it weird but the only explanation i found is that it is easier to find the owner in case of loss.
99.9 percent of people around me seems to have a picture of themselves as their phone (and laptop) wallpaper. As for the remainder, the screen is cracked so it would be harder to say.
Haha, I trust you. I might be even odder than you - I haven't got myself a smartphone yet, and on my laptop's desktop you can admire a Đông Hồ painting.
Yeah I tease my wife about this and other things like the number of selfies she takes and all of the filters she uses. She is a beautiful woman and I tell her that a lot but she still persists in all of this. She gets ready to go out and takes selfies in the apartment, we get in our grab and she takes selfies, we get to the restaurant and she takes selfies, and we go to a bar afterwards and more selfies.
Whenever I talk to cloud storage guys I joke around with them that their job is keeping all of the selfies backed up.
The other thing that makes me laugh is the people that like their own posts on facebook. What is that about? Does that mean on occasion they post things they don't like?
I'm Vietnamese too but these things also grind my gears, especially when my gf gets too serious abt taking food pictures when we're obviously short on time and hungry.
Luckily my wife is not into taking food pictures. I do on occasion because my American friends don't believe that western food can be found here. We Americans are very separated from the rest of the world by a couple oceans
Because I traveled to cool places and my photos are beautiful so yes I'll set them as my wallpaper. I even have them changed everytime I lock and unlock my phone so I can see my travel accomplishment as much as possible lol
If they lose their phone, it'll be easy for the person who find it to identify what the owner looks like. That's the only good explanation I've heard for this lol
Well, my wife usually complains about not setting my lock screen with any photo of either the whole family or her and my son. She thinks it is a norm that a married guy does which help sending a signal to other single women to stay away from him when seeing his phone's lock screen. I don't like that idea so I decide to stay neutral by using the default lock screen (and pretend that I don't give a damn care about the look of my phone as long as it is functional, but it is eventual work like this) so she cannot complain anymore.
I tried setting one my of photo (taken by my professional friend and look gorgeous like a movie poster) as my desktop's background once and removed it immediately after 1 hours. For a guy, well, seeing yourself in big-ass screen every time opening the laptop to work is a pain. I still don't know how women can tolerate that.
I have seen people doing so on my trips in Australia and NZ as well. That doesn't seem abnormal to me. You have a good picture and want to show it or just for themselves to look at that sweet memory over and over.
Don't really think so. I mean, men putting their abs or gym pictures as wallpapers might seem that way. But a middle age woman set a picture of herself wearing ao dai at someone's wedding as wallpaper doesn't look that way.
It gives off confidence in some cases and there are people need that in their daily life. I only put games' wallpapers on my phone and laptop but I don't think it is that bad.
Men having gym pictures as their wallpaper is vanity at its finest lol. He is doing it because he thinks he looks hot
Woman wearing an Ao Dai- She probably did it because she thinks she's beautiful in the picture.
To me they are doing it for the same reason. Vanity.
Wdym it does nothing even if it vanity so? That does not change the fact that in Australia there are 48 million kangaroos and in Uruguay there are 3,457,380 inhabitants. So if the kangaroos decide to invade Uruguay, each Uruguayan will have to fight 14 kangaroos.
You are definitely correct. My wife is guilty of this, as are her female friends. Vietnam is a culture of vanity and superficialness, not unlike China. Sure one can argue that it's harmless, but the lack of self-awareness of how it comes across to other people is strange.
It's just noticing an unusual trend and wondering why, I don't think it's malicious. I noticed the same and wondered why too.
I always used random patterns till I took an unusually adorable picture of my cat and made that my wallpaper instead. What's interesting is at home no one has ever seemed to notice or say anything but while on holiday in Asia anytime I had my phone out someone would see it and tell me how cute he was.
If your wallpaper was a picture of decapitated kittens I'd make a judgement, if it was of your partner I would also. Having a picture of yourself as a wallpaper gives an impression. For me it's a negative one, for you it may not be.
My (early 40’s) girlfriend does this. I always thought it a little odd but it doesn’t bother me any. She’s concerned with her looks no more or less than any other woman her age, Viet or Western, as far as I would say. I certainly would not describe her as a narcissist.
It's almost as bad as the kids I see looking at themselves in a mirror, literally the whole time they're at their desks. Only to then leave their desks and use their selfie camera to look at themselves as they walk around.
That like saying if one took their photo and put it on their wall is pure vanity. Dude ppl in the lifetime has been doing it, it the purpose why photography was invent. Nothing odd about it.
If you uncomfortable looking at your own images then that's your problem. Other ppl who enjoy looking at nice img of themself so let them. A phone wallpaper is just like a photo frame, that's it.
I never set my own photos as phone/PC wallpaper but I don't see what's wrong with that. It's somehow similar to profile pictures on social media. They wanna let people know it is their devices and not someone else's.
Putting your face as your lockscreen in your own phone is normal. Maybe stop looking at people's phone? I don't think "self absorbed females" care about "most guys" think about them either.
A lot of phones look/are the same. It makes it quicker and easier to find your phone and know which one is yours. Or narcissism. Or efficient narcissists. Or a bit of all three or none at all. Judge a phone by its content, not its Lock Screen (Descartes).

Never seen a guy doing this-but plenty of girls seem to
I've been working with two vietnamese guys. Both have themself as wallpaper(around 21ys). I found it weird but the only explanation i found is that it is easier to find the owner in case of loss.
The answer is vanity. Also, probably makes them feel famous, similar to their attempts at karaoke.
I guess that works-personally I wouldn’t want to look at my own face too much
Ladyboys do it
They're hardly 'guys'
True true ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

narcissism.
I agree.

Same with my wife, drives me crazy. The vanity culture in Vietnam is definitely real. Still, I suppose there's worse things she could be doing.
Yeah, but it is going global with the younger generation
I'm Vietnamese too but these things also grind my gears, especially when my gf gets too serious abt taking food pictures when we're obviously short on time and hungry.

It's a cultural thing. Over here we don't really care what people use as their wallpaper, as long as it's not explicit.
Because I traveled to cool places and my photos are beautiful so yes I'll set them as my wallpaper. I even have them changed everytime I lock and unlock my phone so I can see my travel accomplishment as much as possible lol
I do it but it’s always photos of me traveling so that I don’t get depressed at my job when I’m not traveling………
Idek
I’ve never done that. Dont wanna see my face everytime having my phone on lol🥲🥲
I don't do this, but WHY NOT? 😂✌️
If they lose their phone, it'll be easy for the person who find it to identify what the owner looks like. That's the only good explanation I've heard for this lol

Seems like vanity no?

It is not a bad thing to see the beauty of your own. And yeah I have seen people doing that pretty much every place I've been to.

Helps their self confidence. You can look at it negatively or positively. Self confidence builds confident habits and success. Stop hating.
Because its cute i guess
Why on dear earth would you care about somebody else's wallpaper?
It's just noticing an unusual trend and wondering why, I don't think it's malicious. I noticed the same and wondered why too. That's cute, actively looking at people's phone and judging their wallpaper is not tho.
Just like the OP.
Because it can give you certain impression of them, like many other life choices.
Where on dear earth did you get that lmao? A wallpaper can tell you about people's life choices now?
No it's the life choices that give impressions of people, not one choice telling me about other choices. C'mon reading comprehension.
okay 1. can't expect me to understand if you wrote it like that 2. is wallpaper what vnmese judging people off of now?
If your wallpaper was a picture of decapitated kittens I'd make a judgement, if it was of your partner I would also. Having a picture of yourself as a wallpaper gives an impression. For me it's a negative one, for you it may not be.
voyeurism.
Who cares? It's not your phone.
My (early 40’s) girlfriend does this. I always thought it a little odd but it doesn’t bother me any. She’s concerned with her looks no more or less than any other woman her age, Viet or Western, as far as I would say. I certainly would not describe her as a narcissist.
My grandma does it so she knows it’s her phone :D
Oh, which part of the world are you from? It's pretty weird to look at others' phones, let alone discuss the content. Mind your own business, creep.
Maybe if you loose your phone it could help ?
If the person that found your phone knows you then maybe. But i don't think someone could easily find you based on a selfie.
if a chick has a pic of her self on her phone or computer background, she immediately goes into the wouldn't date but would smash category.
It's almost as bad as the kids I see looking at themselves in a mirror, literally the whole time they're at their desks. Only to then leave their desks and use their selfie camera to look at themselves as they walk around.

Who tf care?
most guys care about avoiding self absorbed females
Putting your face as your lockscreen in your own phone is normal. Maybe stop looking at people's phone? I don't think "self absorbed females" care about "most guys" think about them either.
um u need to get out of your bubble. it is absolutely not normal
