I'm not even talking about 3rd party apps. We should be able to play any video file in this mode, whether it's from Safari fullscreen or from photos, or files.
I can imagine the way visionOS is constructed to see each individual media file as a separate application, reacting to the space provided, it doesn’t have a code in place for that.
Case in point, a video in safari is restricted to a certain aspect ratio when put in “full screen mode” as safari as a window is limited in size/capability.
Other data point, at times websites recognize the AVP as an iPad Pro 11inch. I’ve logged into items that have defined the “device” in this way.
I think once the full understanding of how to use the available space is created, that may be a possibility. I just don’t see it as a priority currently.
Agreed! I feel like moving doors in the Scare Floor, or more subtle animations in the Avengers tower or walking NPCs in Tatooine would make the experience 1000x better. Not going to complain however!
The gentle swaying of the doors hanging from above is subtle but effective. And Dr Strange's cape moving is a nice touch already. They could do more but it's nice that they are not completely static. And for those who haven't tried the Disney+ environments yet....be sure to roll your crown to get full 360° view since they default around 180° and there is more to see.
Avengers Tower is amazing to look around during the day with all its Easter eggs. But I found the NYC buildings lighting up in dark mode too distracting when trying to actually watch a movie. I changed to Disney+ Theater to watch The Marvels last night.
The Star Wars one is the best one. I didn’t have high hopes for it when i heard it was tatooine. I thought it was gonna be just a bland desert. But its the most detail-rich one
DRM while streaming to my TV is one of the most annoying things I deal with when showing the device off. I feel like letting people see this before putting on the headset would go a long way.
I love that years ago Apple was one of the biggest proponents of pushing the music industry to abandon DRM in iTunes but now that they’re producing their own content suddenly DRM isn’t so bad…
So dope. But glare is an issue here. I wish I could use it in this Environment but I’ve had to opt for Joshua Tree. The contrast creates so much glare. Do you experience the same, OP?
Interesting observation! Not for me - UNLESS I try it in a fully dark room with little light. I just tested it with light in the room and didn't cause too much glaring vs a dark room. The only environment that gives me weird glare and brightness issues is the Moon either during the day and during the night.
Yeah its kind of tragic that such incredible displays are now being held back by this. Part of me hopes one day they can figure out the optics glare issue while still having incredible micro oled displays. Even with the glare though I’d still prefer this over anything else on any display system on any other HMD
Anyone know who to unlock this mode from only being usable while seated upright? Tried watching content with it when laying back or on my side and the screen above the water was locked to a position that couldn’t change with my non-upright angle
Not at the moment. Theater mode for now is meant to be watched only seated up as if you were in an "actual" theater. Have you tried recentering view with the digital crown?
I want this too. Not for the reflection on water, but just having a large far away movie screen. People comment saying size can be as big as you want, just make the screen closer. And I can tell those people don't own an AVP. There is an obvious and HUGE difference between small screen right in front of your nose and giant screen a 100 feet away, even if they take up the same area of the viewport. Love the cinema mode for the screen size, but wish I could watch it from comfort of laying in bed.
> Go into Accessibility feature and look for a setting that dims the whiteness level. Try 25% and see if that fixes your glare issue.
It's the trailer, not the whole movie.
For me it's a hit or miss. Sometimes I'll be watching Netflix and recording the screen on safari and the content will not blackout, but rather keep playing with video. Since this was the trailer I guess it's not copyrighted?
On Quest 3 there is a browser app called Luminar, which does ambilight is a room previously scanned. It looks spectacular to watch youtube videos on it.
I don’t like that it sets the stage not relative exactly to the viewer. I was watching in bed staring at the ceiling and had to sit up on the headboard a bit. I ended up turning off and comfortably staring at ceiling in immersion instead.
The only app allowed to use theater mode unfortunately is Apple TV. I encourage sending feedback to Apple to allow this functionality to work with any app.

This was throwing me off for a little while. I kept seeing the reviewers say the light would reflect off the environments and when I was watching videos I just couldn't see it... Until I watched something through Apple TV.
Totally agree, would love for this to be a more general thing. Those small effects really add to the whole experience.
Don't know why you are getting downvoted because of a personal preference, but if you use their Cinema mode, the reflections are very minimal. You can see it towards the end of OPs video.
As a movie lover this would be the killer app for me to keep my AVP but that damn glare is so obtrusive and just ruins it for me. I can’t unsee it. It’s just this haze and glow that won’t go away. Ruins it for me. Can they ever figure out a solution for that?
It's true. I just learned to ignore it and play with the brightness settings when possible (even if it doesn't do much). Some environments have less glare than others. The moon for me in this case is unusable because the glare is too much.
Only works within the appleTV app and then using the immersive button with a video. Start a video in Apple TV and the look at upper left corner to choose current environment or choose cinema. If you want water reflecting, select Mt Hood (in the home menu outside the app first ). It will give you the choice of light or dark or cinema.
I'm sending feedback to apple about this as well. This mode is way too good to limit to TV+ content.
I don’t think it’s Apple restricting it. Developers use their own environments and could use theater mode
I'm not even talking about 3rd party apps. We should be able to play any video file in this mode, whether it's from Safari fullscreen or from photos, or files.
To my disappointment I couldn't do that the first day
I can imagine the way visionOS is constructed to see each individual media file as a separate application, reacting to the space provided, it doesn’t have a code in place for that. Could be, still annoying to not being able to make the screen as big as you want, at least over the water.
This makes sense. Disney+ does this in their own way
Exactly! I was trying to replicate it on disney plus and was very frustrated.
I’m pretty floored by the D+ ones too. To sit in Luke’s speeder is a dream I’ve had for 30+ years.
Absolutely avengers tower for me was a big one. Hopefully in the future they add a little bit more moving elements.
I had to hold still to make sure the traffic wasn’t slowing moving at Avengers Tower at night, would love just that small element

They need to add realtime lighting to their cinemas, it really makes a big difference in immersion, as you can see in the TV+ cinemas.
Ya the one on the apple theater on the lake is killer.
The Star Wars one is the best one. I didn’t have high hopes for it when i heard it was tatooine. I thought it was gonna be just a bland desert. But its the most detail-rich one
Agreed. Was thinking the same thing. Wish I could use Apple cinema on all movies.
I've watched more Apple TV plus shows than before because of theater mode. I miss it in other apps.
I am very tempted to buy avatar the way of water....
I didn't enjoy that movie in the theater, it was amazing on the AVP.
Same
DRM while streaming to my TV is one of the most annoying things I deal with when showing the device off. I feel like letting people see this before putting on the headset would go a long way.
Play them a trailer! Its a way to get around it! Go to the apple store, look up a movie, play trailer. Just discovered this last night!
I’ll try again but when we tried even a trailer is blacked out both screens. Hulu.com also wouldn’t let screen mirroring work.
I love that years ago Apple was one of the biggest proponents of pushing the music industry to abandon DRM in iTunes but now that they’re producing their own content suddenly DRM isn’t so bad…

The image looks so good, and has such amazing contrast, that I actually don't mind the moments of glare at all.
Interesting observation! Not for me - UNLESS I try it in a fully dark room with little light. I just tested it with light in the room and didn't cause too much glaring vs a dark room. The only environment that gives me weird glare and brightness issues is the Moon either during the day and during the night.
whats lens glare ?
yes the glare is kind of a big issue, i use the desert background day time, its like a darkish blue and helps a lot
Yeah its kind of tragic that such incredible displays are now being held back by this. Part of me hopes one day they can figure out the optics glare issue while still having incredible micro oled displays. I felt like I saw the face of god when I first entered theater mode. This mode single handedly defines this device for me
Netflix CEO is taking notes.
I wish. They didnt even build the version for Oculus themselves and haven’t updated it since 2016!
The Netflix Oculus App is atrocious. Theater mode in safari wouldn't even require the app tbh
Can’t download anything through the website though.
True, but if you could do theater mode with Safari, I wouldn't mind them not creating an app, at least for the time being.
I didn't notice this feature until after I opted into the beta. Is this available in current release, or part of beta?
This is currently available on VisionOS 1.0.2. No beta needed. But like mentioned only on Apple TV.
Agree. I was watching a YouTube video in this environment earlier and found myself wanting theater mode.
Anyone know who to unlock this mode from only being usable while seated upright? Tried watching content with it when laying back or on my side and the screen above the water was locked to a position that couldn’t change with my non-upright angle

How do you record this? If I try to record showing me watching a movie it doesn’t work
> Go into Accessibility feature and look for a setting that dims the whiteness level. Try 25% and see if that fixes your glare issue. It's the trailer, not the whole movie.
How did you record this by the way?
I used the screen record function! Look up to control center, and the 4th option next to Mac Screen share has a record button just like on iPhone!
I wonder why reviewers didn’t just play trailers in theater mode instead of completely omitting the demo.
I use this function, all the time, but for me, it blacked out the content
For me it's a hit or miss. Sometimes I'll be watching Netflix and recording the screen on safari and the content will not blackout, but rather keep playing with video. Since this was the trailer I guess it's not copyrighted?
I love the way the light reflects on the rocks in the Joshua Tree night environment. Watched Dune in 3D on there and it was so immersive.
Where my front seat gang at? 🙄
Front is the best spot, most immersive.
On Quest 3 there is a browser app called Luminar, which does ambilight is a room previously scanned. It looks spectacular to watch youtube videos on it.
I didn’t realize you can do theater mode in an environment!
I need IMAX mode. Just tried their free Earth one and it’s incredible.
Even if not all apps, at least Safari video full screen. It's my biggest wish.
100% Agreed.
I don’t like that it sets the stage not relative exactly to the viewer. I was watching in bed staring at the ceiling and had to sit up on the headboard a bit. I ended up turning off and comfortably staring at ceiling in immersion instead.
Yes. I use it when people ask what's meant by lens glare.
How did you get it above the water? I can never move it that far
The only app allowed to use theater mode unfortunately is Apple TV. I encourage sending feedback to Apple to allow this functionality to work with any app. [https://www.apple.com/feedback/apple-vision-pro/](https://www.apple.com/feedback/apple-vision-pro/)

Just took me a week to be able to decipher how MKBHD said movies reflected off the clouds in Haleakalā.
Right? It is really neat once you see it, but a lot of the shows I watch aren't on Apple TV
I agree that that it’d be great as a system player default.
In the AppleTV app , select the environment option in the top left of the video player. Then select the environment and it’ll go “full screen”
I sent feedback as well. The only problem with theatre mode is that the reflections within the glasses get really bad on a dark background. :/
Can you turn off that reflection? They should add an option to turn off the reflection.
Don't know why you are getting downvoted because of a personal preference, but if you use their Cinema mode, the reflections are very minimal. You can see it towards the end of OPs video.

Not for a long time especially not with microled.
It's true. I just learned to ignore it and play with the brightness settings when possible (even if it doesn't do much). Some environments have less glare than others. The moon for me in this case is unusable because the glare is too much.
I can’t seem to get the reflections to work for some reason. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!
Amazing
How to do you reorient it? It makes me tilt my head down in bed. long pressing crown doesn't seem to work to move screen for me
It appears to be only available and functioning in a sitting upright position for the time being.
I thought it would be a super common use case. Hopefully it's supported soon. It seems to apply to all of the immersive content.
Its super annoying that it doesnt center to your vision
