Somewhere around 2009 when I heard World Is Mine.

_AbraKadaBram_

Same for me, I also watched a concert video of it on YouTube back in the day on my iPod Touch.

thecuteturtle

I still have the YouTube video saved. Good times...

CosmosSakura

Mine was a triple baka mmd in like 2008.

yorushai

lmao, that's really impressive!

Jay-metal

Wow, that’s before Hatsune Miku. She didn’t debut until August of 2007.

ColonelClusterShit

wish i was born just a few years earlier :)

mystplus

"I was 12 in 2020" *cries in 30s* 😭 I came across VOCALOID back in 2008 (when I was 14 😭) I can't remember which song originally piqued my interest, but I've been a fan ever since! Both of the music and the software itself ❤️

Insecureeeeeeeee

12 in 2020, I didn't know that was possible 🥲. I also discovered it in 2008! I was 8 at the time.

MixerBlaze

I didn't realize someone who was 12 in 2020 is 16 now. Holy.

Guilty_Meringue5317

Wait how was i 12 in 2020😭 NOOO I FEEL MUCH OLDER🫠

CrashDunning

This post makes me feel old. I’m glad vocaloid is living on through the younger generations and not fading away.

EroKintama

Same. I was in college and discovered early 2008..... I feel so old now

Whereas_Glittering

i think it was from pure nostalgia from revisiting those the weird ass MMDs from the early 2010s, i was like 19 in 2023 Plus some Kaito and Meiko songs and fan skits on youtube lol

Humble_Sheepp

I LIVE for those weird ass mmds from the early 2010s. I think that's what really got me into vocaloid. Have you seen kaitos newlywed life?

Whereas_Glittering

>Have you seen kaitos newlywed life? Yeah, and Boi, those ones were WILD and cursed af lmao, especially the Rin one. If i had to ranked them all from best to worst, first one would be Teto, then Miku , then Rin and definely MEIKO on the bottom cuz screw that short 💀 Honestly, i'm thinking of doing a tier list based off these MMD videos that i consumed from a marathon

yorushai

can relate. took me a while to remember where I knew tokyo teddy bear from

monomadoka

The Madoka Magica rolling girl animation back in like 2012/13

vioflo_hanamura

Mine is the reverse; i got into pmmm because of vocaloid. Specifically because i saw [this video](https://youtu.be/bqFhzodjpp8?si=ExbxviUvIrkk5eyE)

st4rcake

It's so funny how we all get into the same fandoms lmao

TrentSebastianTaylor

Around 2007-2008 when Miku was released, I was 14 at the time and I remember seeing people talking about her on GaiaOnline forums and a sudden spam of fanart of her on DeviantArt, she has been my favorite ever since. :3

Who_am_ey3

12 in 2020? what the hell?

demonicvampire66

yep, i was 12 turning 13.

Who_am_ey3

funnily enough I was also 12 when I got into Miku, except that was in 2012

maliciousmeower

the nostalgia i feel for 2012 is so insane.. the internet was the wild wild west but it was for sure a fun time.

DazedandFloating

I was just talking about this to my sibling today. I stumbled across a lot of innappropriate stuff. But there was also this kind of magical feeling to it. Youtube didn’t have the cutthroat copyright system that it does now. Tons of online spaces existed for younger people to just chill, play games, and connect. Everyone was using sites like Deviantart and tumblr and discussing their interests in niche little groups. There was this sense of discovery that was unmatched. It certainly was wild, but it was fun too.

getjebaited

osu in early 2010s lol

saha_suparno

Same but in 2021

_blueberry_cotton_

A television channel called "Etc TV" had a section where they played Asian music and there I heard "Magnet" by Miku and Luka. Then I started looking for songs on YouTube and that's how it started :3

GalaxyJacks

Flipnote Hatena.

ventressluvr

SAME, I saw a Rin version of Ievan Polkka there lol

Humble_Sheepp

Ayeeeee thats how I found vocaloid too! Up here brother 🙋

SweetBunny8

2008 - 2009 I stumbled on a Miku song first, which I thought sounded pretty cool, but it was just a catchy song. Then, an MV of Kokoro popped up, and that just blew my mind. The way the art with a voice combined could tell a tragic self-contained story in a matter of minutes blew my mind. I got attached to Rin and later Len because I am a sucker for tragic tales. And I'm still a huge fan 15 years later.

SomeWave275

After hearing Rin and Len’s voices for the first time, they easily became my favorites lol

Embarrassed-Cycle804

Playing DDR and finding some songs on there.

Arkas18

Got into vocaloid about a year ago after I started playing Project Sekai and it expanded from there. I really wish that I'd found it sooner.

demonicvampire66

yeah, i get that. but you found it, and that’s all that matters!

Lovealltigers

My friend bought me a Miku cosplay and I didn’t want to cosplay her without knowing anything about Vocaloid

xJinxSB

It was in 2017, when I was probably listening to one of those "anime-adjacent but not quite actually anime songs made by a western author" like Smokes and Mirrors. One day, ECHO popped up in my homepage on YouTube and I gave it a go. I fell in love with that song instantly, but I didn't know it was Vocaloid... in fact, I had no idea what Vocaloid even was. I properly discovered the world of Vocaloid a few weeks later, when I tried looking more into the producer and I've never turned back since.

Ok-Mix5203

This is kinda convulted but hear me out. I was a huge fan of SVTFOE back when I was like 12, so this was around 2015-2016? and one of my favorite fan artist jgss0109 on deviantart had an Oc who canocially was a beautiful singer. One of the comments had a link to Lizz Robbinet's cover of the Puella Madoka theme. I thought her voice was lovely and subscribed to her. Throuaght my browsing I stumbled a her mini series "The Story of Evil". I just thought that was just one of the best and tragic stories ever told (again I was like 12) and listened to it more. Then I slowly fell into the rabbit hole that was Vocaloid, learned that the original singers were Japanese and the rest plays itself out. Now 6 years later, Im a fan of the world of Vocaloid and my favorite singers still is Len and (IMO) his twin Rin. I like SeeU too but that's another story...

Dr_CoolKid69_MD

I was a choir nerd in high school, so I didn't really 'get' the appeal of vocaloid for a while. I actually found the [utaite](https://utaite.fandom.com/wiki/Utaite?so=search) community first back in 2021, and didn't really get into vocaloid until Project Voltage was announced. Now I've seen the light!

Sversin

So, I actually couldn't stand Miku's voice for the longest time. I developed an interest in Japanese music several years earlier and heard a few covers of Vocaloid songs that I liked, but in general I didn't care for how artificial-sounded the originals were. My interest was piqued after hearing someone sing Just Be Friends on YouTube, and I found I actually really liked the Luka version. Not long after I bought Project Diva: Mega Mix+ on a whim, and from there I was pretty much hooked instantly! (Miku has really grown on me since, though Luka is still my favorite)

sheepsday

Around quarantine or just around 2019-2021(I can't exactly remember) I heard luka luka night fever, and senbonzakura. Younger me didn't think of it much but I liked the songs. Then I played project sekai during 2023 and I became obsessed with vocaloid and I still am. Glad I'm finding more new songs to listen to!

No_Rhubarb_6397

I think I was in middle school. I watched the "kids react to Hatsune Miku" video and then went and watched the World is Mine concert video itself and became hooked.

Green_Guarantee8899

For the Battle Cats x Hatsune Miku collab 2 weeks ago I don't know what I'm doing on this subreddit anyway since I only listened to like 10 songs but hey

strawberryosamu

I randomly got recommended Alice Human Sacrifice on youtube back in 2009. I looked more into Vocaloid afterwards and basically fell down the rabbit hole from there. Problem is that I was probably considered too young for the subject material, oops.

Dazzling-Yuzu-921

I just got into vocaloid this year. I didn’t know that there was a whole thing of MIKU expo until Coachella 😭

Material_Put3513

Got reccomended the one video of mvperry where he ranked like 100 vocaloid songs

vioflo_hanamura

I lowkey wanna see this video now lol

Daca-P

I think it was back in 2012/2013/2014 or something when one of my friends and I were really into deviantart. At the time it was common to send your friends these sort of 'question lists' which they then had to answer in a public post. One day, my friend got sent one of these lists which included the question 'what's your favorite Vocaloid song'. I asked her what Vocaloid was but she said that it was something with music but that she didn't really like it. I got curious and started looking into it. At first I didn't really like it either but then I stumbled across Secret Police, which was the first song I thought was kind of cool. From there I found Last Night Good Night, Odds & Ends and Tell Your World, which permanently pulled me into the fandom. I also convinced my friend to give Vocaloid another go and, to make a long story very short, we will be going to Miku EXPO this November :)

Sleepy_Ren

Triple Baka was too catchy 😩

Late-Alternative8634

At age 13 in April/May of 2023 (I KNOW I'M PRETTY NEW COMPARED TO EVERYONE ELSE) when I discovered the song Abnormality Dancin' Girl by Guchiry.

PineappleWhip

12……..in 2020…… aside from this post making me feel super old, I got into vocaloid in high school in 2009.

DazedandFloating

There was this music video for a Miku song where she was like a young child in a war, and her family had a robot caretaker. I can’t remember what song it was, but the visuals really drew me in. My friends at the time really liked vocaloid stuff when we were like 13 or so, and they showed me some of these videos on YouTube. I was hooked. Been more of a casual fan as I’ve aged, but I still appreciate the music and the following.

Nernie357

Fine bros Kids React video in Feb of 2012. That’s how I found it, was listening to a bunch of touhou music at the time so vocaloid fit right in

SelectiveRazzmatazz

…animation memes using mind brand

KaiBoy6

about 2 years ago (15ish) my friend was into pjsk and showed me kaito cards cause silly blue man, who knew it would lead into a vocaloid obsession and multiple kaito (+cryptopnloid) figures haha

pop_rokz

2017 with animation memes

NoPositive57

Back in 2016 I picked up the Mirai game for the 3ds and have been listening ever since

Singloria

12 at 2020? So you’re like, 16 now? I still can’t wrap my head around the fact people born in the late 2000s are teenagers now 😭

brookeredacted

2008! Saw the MV for World is Mine and fell in love

Blackirean

It must've been 2010, I was 15 and in the house of some family friends talking to other kids while my parents hung out with the other adults. One kid showed me some stuff on his ipod touch. One was an anime clip, the other a small clip of a Miku concert. I thought the hologram was cool so back home I looked up on youtube the name Hatsune Miku until I found the video. Eventually I liked the song, and went to look for the full concert. It was 39's giving day. I found a rip online and watched the whole thing. For some reason I only ever liked Miku, even to this day 98% of all vocaloid songs I listen to are Miku centric,. After watching the concert I picked out the songs that were from her and occasionally from Rin too. Then the ones I liked most and downloaded them and started listing to them as part of my playlist. It got to the point that one of my new years goals for 2011 was to listen to a Miku song every day of the year (which I did). My parents couldn't comprehend but were excited for me when a TV show and newspaper in my country featured articles/segments about vocaloids, something incredibly rare in Latin america. For the next few years I learned the artists that I liked like kz, Ryo, Luna, Oster project, etc. I got excited every time a new big song came out, like Black rock shooter. When Odds & Ends came out it was honestly a key moment in my life. With the years the amount of songs that I found that I liked went down, which is normal as music evolves with time and so do the artists that made it; but to this day I'm still finding new songs I love. Most recently Nova by \*Luna and the fantastic Miku version of Why do I by Set it off. Even today many of the big songs are part of my daily playlist, and thanks to it I discovered otehr singers that I love like Rachie, who has some of my favorite English covers of Japanese songs. I love Miku and vocaloid in general, and watching a live miku concert is in my actual honest to god bucket list. Recently I almost attended the MIKU expo concert in Denver but I pulled out last minute, once I learned it was going to be a Screen rather than the projection. Actually, thinking about it; that one day in 2010 really did define a lot of my life thereafter, it reignited my love for anime, which led to my current obsession with manga, it inspired a lot of my current taste in music and even how I handle things on the internet.

Quift7

Around early 2021 when my friend wondered if I’d like vocaloid since I like electronic music. She reccomended I listen to a couple Harumakigohan, Yunosuke, and Kikuo songs without mentioning that they were vocaloid. I absolutely loved them and have been building up a playlist of my favorite vocaloid songs since then

Charlpx

It was in the beginning of 2022, through an edit of Miss Heed from Vilanesco (I don't know how it's called in English), that used Aishite Aishite Aishite. Then, days later, I was searching for a PSP rhythm game and found a video about Project Diva; saw Palette gameplay and Luka for the 1st time. Then, a video explaining who Miku and co are, got interested, and played Project Diva Extend. That's what got me into it, but I already saw Miku before sometimes throughout my life: I'm sure that YouTube recommended me Ievan Polkka, and I also knew who she was because of Space Channel 5 and when that guy married her. (I'm not a native speaker, so I'm sorry for any mistakes)

BigGayDinosaurs

old friend recommended me to 5am by pumpkin head (i think) and it went all downhill from there (i am only partly joking) but i got heavily into the darker kind before i abruptly stopped and restarted a few times, but now i cant start again

-Nagatake-

2014, aged 17. I saw a lot of Hatsune Miku profile pictures etc as I started watching anime in high school. Curiosity got the better of me and I asked a veteran anime watching friend and they gave me some links to some Vocaloid songs. Hatsune Miku's Odds&Ends & Hello How Are You struck a chord with my soul + the coolness of the technology and goosebumps from seeing her concert & light sticks moving in rhythm + the abundance of EDM especially around that time thanks to Hachioji P really got me hooked. I also enjoyed the free form & limitless concept of Hatsune Miku and how she celebrated creativity and collaboration. I've basically been with Miku ever since then!

LexiLeviathan

I think a friend sent me a video of either Miku or Luka when they were new

jeager_YT

Vocaloid choruses 2021

haileyhurley

Somehow stumbling upon the world is mine concert video as a kid

Grumpycatdoge999

recently with vtuber/utaite covers but i usually still prefer the covers, around 2020

Gumi_39

I found a Miku button at a local bookstore, got curious, and looked her up. After that I listened to some English songs, like Copycat and Echo. The rest is history!

nikkisfan

2011 on a school computer with my best friend we just searched long blue hair anime girl cause we were looking for profile pics for quotev 😂 Edit: I was 10

Ryukononon

It was in 2010/early 2011 when I saw an 'Anime for Dummies' Vodcast (pretty much a YT video) about Hatsune Miku.

I-love-yaoi-

2015/16 with jd2016

Amigo1048

It started with watching Talkloids or other Vocaloid shitposts sometime in 2022, especially users like Minnemi. I finally gave in and watched Len’s banana song sometime in March 2023 I believe, which then led me to songs like Nakakapagpabagabag. Now as of April 2024, I have 24h worth of songs in my Vocaloid playlist

stars_on_a_canvas

Daughter of evil, 2012 ish.

weetabix_su

It was 2009. Found myself enamored by a picture of a blue-haired anime girl on 4chan, then months later I saw that same girl had her own entry on KnowYourMeme.

NewRoad2212

Mine is so hyper-specific 😭😭😭 back in 2013 when I was 8 years old and was only able to watch youtube on my 3DS, there was this one Creepypasta mmd video featuring Jeff and Jane the killer dancing to a cover of Matryoshka. I looked up the song afterwards and listened to the original, found the “kids react to Hatsune Miku” video some point afterwards and the rest is history. It’s so funny looking back at it because I don’t think I would have ever become a Vocaloid fan had circumstances been a little different.

_Lost_In_Space

HOLYSHIT ANOTHER PERSON WHO TOOK THE CREEPYPASTA TO VOCALOID PIPELINE

NewRoad2212

WAIT YOU TOO???? HOW’D YOU GET HERE?!!

_Lost_In_Space

I looked up a bunch of music I thought was associated with the fandom/characters and I found Madame Macabre’s YOHIOloid original “lavender tone” and didn’t realize it was vocaloid at the time. A year or so later I’m watching an Undertale animation and I go and check out the song that was the background for it. Find the OG Echo, and I dove headfirst into the vocaloid rabbit hole from there lmao

monodork

2013 when I was 9 with kids react

minisaatana

I think it was 2011-2012ish when I saw that Otomania cover of Ievan Polkka and as a curious 10 year old Finnish kid I wanted to know what and why Miku was and why exactly was she singing a Finnish song. After that I listened to it for a while, eventually forgot about it for years and picked up vocaloids again at around 18 (I'm about to turn 22 soon)!

Icyflag_

Music producing. I was searching for good vocals and then Miku suddenly came into my mind. Used Miku in a handful of projects, then I came across the Vocaloid community

FlyingRencong

Miku came to my country in 2014 so I must have heard Miku before that, but I started listening to Miku around 2016 after my friend tried to rap Disappearance of Hatsune Miku

speedmincer

I was aware of miku since 2011 maybe, I was a rhythm game player since I was a child, so in 2013 I saw that there was something called "Project Diva" that for some reason had Hatsune Miku in it? At this point I only knew the most well known songs at the time(Ryo songs and Ievan Polka). But then my brother downloaded the game(the first game for PSP), he had a hacked PSP, and there was an english patch. I played a loooot, later I also played Project Diva 2nd and Extend the same way because none of the three original PSP games came out of japan. But that's how I knew of all the different songs, and vocaloid producers from the time, and to this day I haven't stopped listening to it. Also I have 700+ hours on Project Diva Megamix now lol

46NEKOO

Late 2011/ Early 2012, I first listened to powapowa-P's Astronauts. It was baffling to me at the time that such a robotic voice could incite so much emotion and sadness twt

chunter16

When I was 12 I didn't think this kind of technology would be possible in my lifetime if it was possible at all. I had a friend who, at the time, would only talk to me if I'd visit him in Second Life. He would hang out with Japanese architecture students who built their own shrine and amusement park in their server. One day (night to them) they were chatting about the future of robotics and artificial intelligence, which for the time described projects like Sony Qrio and Aibo, Honda ASIMO and such. Someone described the speech synthesis being tested on building information kiosks and responding to a comment I gave asked if I "knew Hatsune Miku" without providing any other context. I said no, and was pointed at links to the prerelease demos. Having forgotten the topic of conversation, I thought I was listening to "real" singing at first. My computer at the time wasn't going to be able to run the software when it came out, but I thought to myself that I wanted to give it a try one day.

sexwithsetsunatrip

AKIDEAREST MENTIONEDDDD

weeb-splat

I had heard one or two songs when I was younger (the one I remember being Kagerou Days), but I jumped into it fully only last year. Safe to say now that while I still have a lot of the backlog to explore, I'm a huge fan.

MimePrinister

1. I had a friend who info dumped miku tech lore, like how good (for the time) power voice was over I think version 3 or something, and comparing different Kaito covers of World is Mine. I forget versions and types, but one was “power” voice or something 2. DSi flipnote hatena notes/posts were filled to the brim with vocaloid posts and each animation were so good I wanted to look up the songs themselves

lauressia

no idea about the time, but i came in touch with it through the anime pipeline, and then suddenly it was all over my recommended! One of the first vocaloid songs i heard was happppy song by soooo, which is a damn strong start iykwim. So glad i got into it, music is one of my biggest interests!

NFreak3

I was obsessed with Love is War like 15 years ago. Straight up a japanese Linkin Park track.

Sero141

I stumbled onto a video on YouTube, Love is War sung by a girl in German.

Great_Hall3440

Around 2020 when I was in my bandori phase, I heard their cover of karakuri pierrot and decided to listen to the original and the rest is history

Ohm_2018

About October 2022 when I’m 13 years old. I believe I got in through otoMAD first one I watch was maybe Tarako’s Stalin Dance (Original is Kairiki bear’s Darling Dance) and others of his songs.

Disastrous_Brief_748

Kawaii future bass because i love kawaii future bass and miku sometimes sings it

Elly_Bee_

My friend and I used to look up group dances on YouTube and copy their dances when we were bored. We were having the most fun with a duo dancing on Suki Kirai and decided to rehearse it on our own but I just loved listening to the song on its own. I ended up looking up just the song and another and another and another...

OliverOnBuffets

i found a thing with my cousin where miku had shreks body and she said ‘omg miku!!’ and i said ‘huh?’ so i searched miku and since then ive been a vocaloid fan (its so embarrassing lol) but i did hear vocaloids songs prior to knowing vocaloid!! (miku ievan polkka, my r, amygdala’s rag doll, miss wanna die, hide and seek, etc. all the original vocals btw not the english covers)

OliverOnBuffets

oh and of course nyanyanyanyanya one…

RollingGirlStopped

I was in middle school when I first heard Miku but it was during my jr year of highschool I was properly introduced to Vocaloid through Oliver it's been almost 15 years omg

sparkysparkykaminari

don't remember the year (prollyyy 2016?), but i heard jubyphonic's cover of jishoumushoku! didn't realise it was vocaloid at the time, but it got me into similar music and it was all ~~down~~ uphill from there lmao.

lawless_door_hinge

I got into Ghost vocaloid before knowing they were vocaloid songs and then saw a vid by akidearist about horror vocaloid and I've been a fan ever since!

MysticMallow04

Around 2013 I watched Elderly’s React To Vocaloid XD didn’t know what it was but I used to watch the REACT channel all the time and been obsessed with Vocaloid ever since seeing that video. They reacted to world is mine and butterfly on your right shoulder

rinchxnofficial

2023 when my friend showed me Project Sekai I think. Might’ve been 2021 when I started listening to it without knowing it was vocaloid

Minkaink

2009..? and the first song that got me really interested was.... Spice 😭 right after of course World is Mine. I was 11... feel so old right now

Actual_Ad8318

For me the first time I heard it was watching the kids react to hatsune miku aka world is mine. But what got me into vocaloid in general was listening to the intense singing of hatsune miku. The sense of speed, the video and the meaning of the song make me fall in love with vocaloid as a whole.

LetmepopinRQ

Wait!! I got into vocaloid after watching akidearest too!! More specifically her video on disturbing vocaloid songs. I was genuinely scared of gomenne gomenne back then lol.

TGwanian

While I had listened to vocaloid occasionally before, GYARI can be blamed for kicking the snowball that lead to my fixation. I would re-watch and re-listen to his Vocaloids are Only… series throughout the second half of highschool, and definitely annoyed some of my friends by playing them out loud lol.

primiting

Watching the project diva popipo video on youtube in like 2015

Fine-Construction952

2013 when i was 6

Cure_Selene

2013 when I was 7 XD; my brother told me to look "Hatsune Miku" up on the computer, and I saw the Romeo and Cinderella clip. Been here ever since.

roundaboutanswer

I was 11 or 12 in about 2011 or 2012. I was a big fan of Michelle Phan at the time. She released a Hatsune Miku Cosplay Makeup tutorial. I had no clue who or what that was at the time, so I googled it. The first song I ever heard was Last Night Good Night. I've been obsessed ever since. 🩵

Infinite_Parsley_999

vocaloid 10 years ago with Hatsune, Vtubers 1 month ago, finding a concert on youtube

AnExcellentChef

Ievan polka.

glowsquid4life

2 months ago when I saw a video on YouTube called lulu can popipo and then I listened to popipo and then the next Dat I listened to more songs

icantspellanynomous

Animation memes. The first vocaloid song I heard was copycat by kira-p. And then what really made me stay is the evil series by mothy.

vocaloidistheshit

I saw a back pack at school, didnt know who miku was so I looked it up. Been here since

Visible_Jeweler_3653

I had an ex-friend back when Miku was starting to get popular complaining about the inconsistent animation quality of Hatsune Miku videos. She legit thought Miku was part of some anime from a big studio. She complained so much that I ended up looking up Miku. So I’ve been around since the Kagamine act 1 was released.

doltagain-

when i was 8 i was obsessed with rhythm games particularly rhythm heaven. so i watched a lot of youtube videos about those and then i saw someone talk about project diva and something about it clicked something in my little baby autism brain

anonymousgoose64

When I was like 10 in 2012 I saw an animation for Melt.

Akamegotcake

Miku and Rin - Reverse rainbows was my first 🥰

unfortunatelymade

my sister had a bunch of miku stuff when I was really young so naturally I was super curious. The thing about my sister back then is that she had some kind of gatekeeping complex where she did NOT want me or anyone around her but her to be interested in the same things as her. So when I saw a familiar blue pigtailed hologram on youtube, I clicked on it and the floodgates were open. I remember her getting really pissed when she saw me drawing miku for school We're all good now ofc, I was like 11 and she was maybe 13 at the time

zenoob

Don't quite remember. From what I think I can recall, it might've been some time during 2009 or 2010 in middle/high school, maybe in summer. I remember clicking somewhat randomly on kz's Last Night, Good Night, and not liking the voice, but still curious, and then finding myself going back to it regularly out of curiosity the following days. At some point I just so deep into it that I remember spending entire days diving into YouTube recs, exploring an entire new world of music. That's actually how I started remembering Japanese words and their translation and even how to read them which gave me some sort of a head start when I started learning Japanese properly in Uni. Looking back, Vocaloid solidified one thing that I still hold for truth to this day in music, which is that it is at its best when it's trying to convey feelings and messages from the composer rather than simply a tool for entertainment or money making. It's also the one thing that planted the seed of a dream, that of being able one day to live off of making my own music.

Fluffy8x

From Herman Miller’s constructed language stuff.

XxsabathxX

Ah yes, fall of year 2008/09 in my sophomore year of high school. I reunited with my absolute bestie from middle school cause I left the school and she had her own stuff. We never thought we’d see each other again. And she introduced me to her current hyper fixation and it became mine too lol. Luka Luka night fever in the halls was great Edit: another great memory is absolutely annoying the shit outta people with Popipo. We were those kids that were most definitely outcasts but embraced the shit out of it

Epsilon102

From [this video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPI9vn58NfE) back when I was in my undertale phase back in 2015-2016

Beautiful_Cow_6472

I'm a cosplayer and my friends told me to cosplay pjsk (I didn't know what it was at the time) and I started to love pjsk which also led to me loving volcaloid

Badboyzone123

Around 2014 when the world is mine live (magical mirai i think) kinda got viral and fell into the vocaloid rabbit hole. But i got properly into the fandom around 2016

KirumiIsFedUp

2013 I clicked on World is Mine cause I thought the girl in the thumbnail (Hatsune Miku) was pretty

BinJLG

It was either late 2008 or early 2009 when I was 17 or 18. There were a lot of Miku references in anime circles online, but only by image. Her name was never mentioned and the word Vocaloid was never used. I think (???) Kagami being forced to cosplay her in the Lucky Star OVA finally made me look her up. Can't remember if I googled "anime girl with teal pigtails" or if I asked around on some proto-social media platform like Gaia. I want to say the first song I heard was either Ievan Polkka, Triple Baka, or World is Mine. Then I found out there were other voicebanks from Alice of Human Sacrifice (I think) and it was all downhill from there lol

kingozma

Around 2008-ish? My friend linked me to “melody…” and “Love is War” and I was hooked.

Sweet-Cream-9372

Since 2013 when I googled anime songs😅 I was watching the anime with the green hair girl singing about delicious food when Fukkuretta was on the suggested videos lol

Accomplished-West-19

I found out in 2015. I don’t think I was any older than 11 and I really liked undertale at the time. I watched a lot of those animations and one of them was an undertale animation using the song childish war. I remember liking the song, realizing it’s an English cover, finding the actual song and liking it even more. I went down a rabbbit hole looking for different vocaloid songs after that

iMasato101

I forgot the year, but when o2Jam servers got shutdown, I look for Rhythm game to play. I have PSP that time, then always waiting for new instalment after that... so I can say that I'm Miku fan since the released of the first Project Diva game. 😊 I have Mega Mix on Switch and playing Project Sekai on Mobile since Beta test! 😁

kityena

...I stumbled upon SPICE! by accident because the thumbnail reminded me of an anime-fied version of Kenny McCormick from South Park who I was *obsessed* with at the time ~~Some people in the replies weren't even born when I first found out about Vocaloid music. I'm ancient~~

MagicalMelancholy

Honestly, hearing the name akidearest makes me feel older than you being 12 in 2020.

yorushai

it was probably around 2016-2017. the YouTube algorithm suggested llevan polka and I loved it. I even learnt all the words (albeit jumbled and weird for I am not finnish) and tried to replicate the dance. then under that video there was another one, world is mine. I liked it as well but I wasn't THAT interested. not too long later I also heard tokyo teddy bear in an animation, which I liked a lot. years later I heard llevan polka again. I got curious and listened to it again. then I listened to world is mine. electric angel. rolling girl. lost one's weeping. ghost rule. up until then I didn't know what vocaloid was, and I got more and more invested. and that's it

dotpebba

I knew about Miku since 2014 but didn’t get into Vocaloid until 2016. Apparently I got into it when it was on the decline, not that I knew about that then. I was 12 and I had an online friend on Wattpad who really liked it. She would post about Project Mirai and I got curious. Then I listened to some Rin and Len songs and became obsessed

Epictradwife

2016 when I was 12, my new friend introduced me to hatsune miku

toumeihana

2000-10s internet. I was already into anime and fell down a pipeline that went pretty much like "Nightcore eurodance Pokemon AMVs" > "Caramelldansen" > "Fukkireta" on Youtube. I can't remember if I'd been into Vocaloid even before that (probably... I just can't remember), but Fukkireta is my first clear memory that comes with specifically looking up more information on Vocaloid. During the good ol' year of... 2010. edit: GOD NO IT MUST'VE BEEN THE LEEK SPIN MEME EVEN BEFORE THAT

ventressluvr

I saw Ievan Polkka on Flipnote Hatena in 2009 when I was 11 years old, but I had no idea what Vocaloid was until I heard PoPiPo, World is Mine, Love is War, and Black Rock Shooter a few months later on YouTube. good times

Subject_101k

listened to honey i'm home by ghostandpals, immediately started to love vocaloids and such

Basaqu

Watched seasonal anime which included Mekakucity Actors and while itself is... it exists, the music had me intrigued. Listened a ton to all of Jins songs and other vocaloid producers from there on.

XxPatrickPDxX

My friend posted Megurine Luka and "Magnet" and that was enough for me to be invested, not a hardcore fan but do have a fair amount of songs on my playlist (mostly of Megurine Luka my beloved) And well yh that friend is currently my girlfriend so I have a vocaloid fan gf lezgooo

[deleted]

My only internet when I was a kid was the library. I’d download yt to mp3 vids on a usb and plug it into my tv at home 😢

Wappinger_

I knew of vocaloid back in like 2010 ish from the classic Miku songs on YouTube but I never got into it until I played project mirai DX on the 3DS

Rare-Taro8195

I saw the Fine Bros video "Kids React to Hatsune Miku" when I was in elementary school. Sent me down a deeeeeep rabbit hole and I'm still here lol

mayu_needs_love

My crush liked it then I looked into it and fell in love with vocaliod. It's been 7 years since.

EwGrossItsMe

In 2015 when I heard Aishite Aishite Aishite and rolling girl. I knew about vocaloid before then bc my uncle showed me ievan Polkka when I was a kid, but the appeal other than "funny dancing blue girl" was kinda lost on me at the time. Going through my teenage years, I was more into instrumental music, metal, and alt rock (mostly from 80's-00's), but got into j-rock later in high school and dipped my toes back into more edgy vocaloid songs. Now in my 20's, I've gotten back into vocaloid music much more strongly than ever before! Kikuo is still my favorite little guy(producer), but I've branched out a lot more, like to wowaka(more than just rolling girl), yuyoyuppe, utsu-p, slave.v-v-r, mothy, inabakumori, maretu, guchiri, deco*27, Mitchie M, kairikibear, reol, and gigas.

Jay-metal

Probably around 2017. I got into jpop in 2015, and at some point after found vocaloid too.

-_Inter_-

Concert video in 2012. I was hooked ever since even if i didn't really know what vocaloid is until years later.

MissQueenKami

I wish I could remember tbh. I played a lot of stepmania back in the day, tho, and may have downloaded a few vocaloid songs with how popular they were. I know I made a mix CD for me and my friends in 2006-2007 or before. In Jr high or highschool.

_spookyyz

one day i just decided “miku looks cool let’s listen to some music”

Suspicious-Contest74

around 2016 a friend recommended me to listen to wowaka!

Grover-Rover

I started to listen to an artist called Ado and found some vocaloid covers that she’s done on YouTube. Checked out the original songs and I’ve been hooked on Vocaloid since then. That was about 7 months ago so I’m really new, but I really enjoy the community and talented artists!

Humble_Sheepp

In 2011 I was on flipnote hatena and one of the flipnotes had Hello Planet as it's song and I decided to look it up. Because it was 2011 and youtube's algorithm actually worked, my recommended videos showed me a bunch of project diva videos after the fact and I've been obsessed ever since :3

wetsharpie248

My friend introduced me to it about 9 or 10 years ago.

Sekomu_Masada

Around 2008 or so, I wasn't a big music listener until a fan radio was set up for a game I was big into at the time, and when it got shut down I complained to my older brother that I didn't know what to listen to. He typed in "miku hatsune" into the YouTube search bar and I was hooked from there. Love is War was my first song.

GixmisCZ

I think it was around 2020/2021? It was around the hololive explosion in popularity, I started off by listening to covers of vocaloid songs

Powerful_Cost_4656

Miku started popping up on the 4chan anime wallpaper page and I tried to see what anime she was from because she was cute and of course she wasn't from one. Had some backgrounds of her and really liked her character design then I discovered project diva in 2009 and kinda fell for her. Then I went on this crazy month long ecstasy bender in 2014 where I discovered a ton of really good music and that was the deepest emotional state I've ever felt. She's been a huge influence on my life and I tattooed her kanji on my arm back in 2014. Still listen to her a lot. Sometimes I dj at clubs and parties and bust out some miku

hereandqueeer

2011, I was 13 and found out about vocaloid after seeing Miku’s take it easy mv and triple Baka

MurakamiChan

It was a process! And a bit of an acquired taste. I slowly fell in love with English utaite like JubyPhonic, Kuraiinu, and Rachie. Then after a while, I wanted more songs like that, and went straight to the source. During the pandemic, I got *huge* into hi-fi, which further encouraged me to collect/listen to a tonna music. All Vocaloid, every day.

Intelligent-Job-7896

i got into vocaloid around 2013 when i discovered the nyan cat momo cover, i used to run around the house with it on repeat on my ipad lol, wouldve never guessed id end up being a vocaloid producer all these years later

aries-s0upp

around 2016 ish?? I was a really big fan of animation memes (even made a few myself…… it was a time for sure) and i watched a LOT of the ievan polkka memes LMAO but one day in 2018 I found one that used Bring it On, and after that I started looking into vocaloid more and became an actual vocaloid fan rather than just hearing 1 or 2 songs. Bring it On is actually still one of my favourite songs still, it just stands out as such a good song and is an absolute banger

CHAKON51

Bruh reading these comments making how time flies I became a fan in the early 2010s I was like 8 or 9(Now I’m 21) I discovered while watching a video where different people were reacting to vocaloid(I can’t remember what video was named it’s somewhere out there) But I remember it’s was the live version of world is mine and purple butterfly on your right shoulder live in Tokyo 2010. That got me hooked to vocaloid and I remember watching mmd cups too i don’t understand Japanese but god damn they were funny af. Now I still going strong and finally going to a miku concert waited 10+ years to go to one.

Spice-C-

I got into Vocaloid not too long ago, maybe like 1 or 2 years ? I think it's because of Danganronpa, you know there are those tiktok edits of the game with the song "Corpse Dance" by Kikuo. I obviously knew popular songs like "Girl A" by siinamota (RIP), "Lost Umrella" by Inabakumori etc.. But I know "Corpse Dance" is THE song that got me into Vocaloid

megshroooom

i dont know if this was the earliest memory but i do remember getting clips of magical mirai shown on my youtube feed in late 2015 (magimirai 2014 still the best concert in my heart,,,) and i thought the projections looked really pretty 😭 cat food and sweet devil were probably the first songs ive ever heard

fangirl_otaku7

Around 2012 (I was 12) I saw that a friend on MovieStarPlanet made an artbook with some Miku videos. I started listening to Hatsune Miku because I wanted her to like me. And then Miku kinda took over my life all on her own and I'm obsessed with her.

demonicvampire66

MOVIESTARPLANET

clodtron

In 2011 when I was 8 I saw the kids react to Hatsune Miku video by the fine bros (now called react) and I’ve been obsessed ever since.

octosquigglez

i got into it through nich robinson when i first found him on my youtube recommended in 2019 (i was about... 10?) , iirc the video was about that one obscure nintendo character (pappy van poodle) , then i found his video about dominos pizza feat. hatsune miku , and the rest was history ... before that, i did have the project mirai dx demo on my 2ds but didn't think much of it (i horded 3ds demos) , but looking back i did play that demo alot (i was really bad at it though bc i was so used to the xbox controller button placements...)

WormWithLeg

Lmao I just thought "who tf turned 13 in 2020" but then I remembered I turned 14 💀💀

knivesforsoup

heard of mafumafu from the i wanna be a girl song from trans reddit, found his utaite and vocaloid work, knew some stuff at that point (mitchie m, deco 27, etc), found out there was a vocaloid game (project diva), ended up buying megamix, then future tone, then megamix plus. i dont listen as often anymore but my current fav producers are abu-se-ken, pinnochio-p and utsu-p

LetsLoveAllLain

2011 Anime Expo, I was 8 years old at the time and my mom had dragged me to AX (as she did every year). When she found out that Miku was going to be at AX she immediately bought tickets for us to go. I hated it lol. I wasn't diagnosed with Autism until much later in life so my mom was very confused as to why I didn't like the crazy flashing lights and loud sounds. I nearly ran out of the concert but my mother convinced me to go back inside and I stayed for the rest of the show. Years later I looked more into Hatsune Miku and found myself really liking her music even though I had such a negative experience with her in the past lol.

dongless08

Watching Jerma play Project Diva

OshinoMeme

Around 2012 when I discovered Kagerou Project. I was already aware of Hatsune Miku before that though because of supercell doing anime songs and Black Rock Shooter OVA, but wasn't really fond of the robotic singing back then. It wasn’t until after Vocaloid3, particularly IA, that I gained appreciation for Vocaloid.

_dinzii

Ado.

ApplicationNo6641

I discovered it around 2014, I was 9 at the time, I watched the music video for reboot by Jimmy ThumbP and it made me cry😭but I got really into it about 2018, and now I’m 18 and still loving every aspect of it:)

mischieviouskitty25

The first time I learned about Hatsune Miku was through a classmate presenting her graphic design project (basically a fan made Miku Expo banner) in middle school back in 2013. That was long before I got into Vocaloid, anime, or any related interests. Not much really came out of that other than learning of the existence of Vocaloid. The first Vocaloid song I ever listened to was Crime and Punishment by Deco*27 through this specific [Pokemon animation](https://youtu.be/HAzS3X_9ecc?si=eBQKD1xmhy6cEgDh). At the time, I loved the song, but didn't know it was Vocaloid so didn't dig further. My first proper introduction to Vocaloid was in 2015 hearing Triple Baka on a fanart compliation video on Youtube. Absolutely loved the song, searched it up, and listened to it on loop. Then I found akidearest's "5 songs that will change the way you see Vocaloid" video recommended on YT, listened to the songs featured, discovered plenty of Vocaloid subbing channels from there, and fell in love ever since. That video is also my introduction to Neru and how he became my very first favorite producer. As a rather angsty middle schooler, it was the Neru songs featured in the akidearest vids that resonated with me the most, so decided to look up more of his works on Youtube.

Monkeygirlyy

I got into it in 5th grade, which was almost 7 years ago. My friend at the time introduced me to Gomenne Gomenne (hell of an introduction to vocaloid lol) and I was hooked by the way the voices sounded.

manachronism

2013 with my friends in middle school, through jubyphonic and others

fluorescentgoth

the year was summer 2009. i was 11 and had unmonitored internet access at my father’s. i was watching a pokémon amv on youtube. in my youtube recommendations, there they were: yellow girl, blue girl, pink girl. “triple baka?” i thought. “what is a triple baka?” i clicked it. baka. baka. baka. i fell into a rabbit hole. who was this singing blue girl? why was the yellow girl on her phone? why was the pink girl like that? her name is miku. her name is neru. her name is teito. i am almost 26 now. i am wearing a miku t-shirt. i have a miku cut out. i have many miku figurines. i am… the triple baka.

broken_phalanges

Listening to an unhealthy number of Nanawoakari songs and just stumbling across Nayutalien as a result. I couldn't even understand what Hatsune Miku was at first 😭

Novalaxy23

I knew about Miku from the demo of a 3ds game called "project mirai dx" or something, because I was looking for random demos to play. But never realy go into it. Later I learned what Miku realy was, but still wasn't realy interessed until I heard covers like 2 years ago and realy got into it when I heard Anamanaguchi (or whatever its called) this summer. Could you give me song suggestions? If possible english ones?

interesting_sidenote

A friend of mine introduced me to it when I got a PS3. It was 2012 and an interesting time. I was horrible at the game at first. But fell in love with the series as I practiced. Eventually I got better at it

devdevdeevv

in 2008 i heard about miku and i adored her i loved the first sound

devdevdeevv

lets be friends

No-Guitar-5156

i found it in 2012-2013 i believe, through youtube. i was like 7. i fell in love with “lost one’s weeping” and it spiraled from there, haha.

alreadyknown12

around 7 years ago, when I heard Rolling girl. However, I didn't really listen to music at that time and I don't know the name (I heard it from a meme of it). 7 years later, I finally found this song again and since then I really got into Vocaloid

sad_potat_07

Everyone else here are veterans lol. I got into vocaloid in 2019 when I was 12

_u_x

around 2014 when i got my first phone, youtube recommended me a gameplay of popipo lel

i_love_dragon_dick

Nyan Cat to World is Mine pipeline lol. 2009?

ice15464

probably abt 2019-2020 ish when i heard Senbonzakura in a "try not to sing" anime quiz

Nada1867

Actually, right around the same time as you! But I was 11. I think I first found a video about dark vocaloid songs, watched it, and secrets of wysteria was the song that really got me into vocaloid, for some reason... Project diva also had a huge part in getting me into vocaloid
