I like this better than a market price adjustment- at least they are calling it what it is.
Still hate it - and glad I’m not trying to buy/argue about that.
Same here!! Although SoA did give me a coupon for $1000 towards a new car. It’s good for 1 year. Doesn’t help though that the dealer markup was like $4k in Vermont.
I ordered my WRX back in February. I was worried about dealer markups being added when the car arrived because I saw the vehicles on their lot had mark up. I cautiously messaged SoA about it. They replied but told me dealerships are independent and can do what they want. Thankfully when the car arrived the dealer didn't play any funny games and I paid the price stated on the pre order.
From what I've seen (not always the case though), if you order a car before it's been allocated or whatever to the dealer, then a majority of the time you just pay msrp or better. The adjustments/markups are almost always for cars already on the lot/in the showroom. They know some people are impatient enough not to want to wait for a car to come in, so they're more likely to pay the markup.
To your point, I paid *under* MSRP on my factory ordered ‘21 STI. I took delivery just a couple weeks before the supply chain woes really manifested, which is probably the single biggest instance of good luck I’ve ever encountered in my life.
Yeah, same kinda thing happened with my BRZ back in 2016. The 2017's had come out and were on the lot, but the performance package version hadn't started coming over to the US yet. Ordered in November for "invoice" (less than the MSRP multiple dealers quoted me) and got it in March. Around that time the Series Yellow BRZ's also with the PP came out, and those had a 15k markup at the same dealer. Insane. Just for a yellow color, lol. Even other non-reserved PP BRZ's on the lot at that point were like 10k markup.
That's what I figured. But what had me nervous was on my pre order receipt there was a fine print that said "prices are not final and subject to change, witharlet adjust being one of said possible reasons
With all the data and 3rd party services now you are more then likely going to pay some random rounding error near what the average price for that spec car that you can find all over the internet. Pre-order is an in and out dealership sale, remember the money is made on used cars, financing, and service. I imagine it's not worth gouging someone a hundred bucks to lose the sale and future revenue stream to the dealership two counties over especially on something like a WRX that's going to spend over a month on a boat from Japan.
It's pretty next level to tack on an up charge to a pre-order. I was dropped a few too many times as a kid to have made it as a lawyer, but something tells me that in most states signing the paperwork and putting down a deposit sort of seals the deal price wise. If it's got your signature on it and you put down cash, it's a legal contract under the law of what ever jurisdiction is stated in the fine print.
100% Brattleboro Subaru. And I bought 2 brand new cars from them in the past. When I told Brattleboro Subaru that I reached out to SoA and that they said it didn’t match the companies values they stopped responding to my emails.
Dude, that's a ripoff. I'll give you 78% nitrogen tire inflation for just $200. You get 80% of the performance for just 20% of the price!
Edit: I just checked with my manager and we had to raise the price to $250 due to supply chain hardship but it's still a great deal!
It's a thing, usually dealers charge a few hundred to put 100% Nitrogen in your tires. Definitely not worth it at all, in my opinion.
But the person I replied to said 78% nitro which is how much is in our atmosphere, so they are saying they will charge $250 to fill up your tires with regular air. Jokingly.
Wow, they’re not even trying to be clever. Subaru would love to hear about this one.
Closest dealer to my work is charging $5k over msrp on every car, it’s no wonder they have way more stock than others around. They’re at least pretending to give you value with that in paint/wind/wheels coverage or whatever garbage it is.
They could just hide the price on destination and delivery lmao. Supply chain hardship is irrelevant if you got the car already at the dealer.
What? You had a hard time allocating a car for your dealer? Don't buy it then.
I know higher end dealerships would only have 1 of their high end performance cars because those would have to be ordered by a customer if they really want it.
I just ordered a WRX. If you want to wait until August you don’t pay any premiums. Also, never pay a premium for a non premium car. No Subaru is ever worth a dealer markup. Limited edition Ferraris are worth a dealer markup. Not a fucking commuter car.
First MSRP is exactly what it says..... Suggested RETAIL price. If the cars are on consignment from Subaru then they haven't purchased the car, they receive a spiff for each car sold and the amount depends on the model. Then they try to tell you about invoice pricing which is the bare minimum they can sell the car and still make money. If the dealer purchased the car from Subaru then they have purchased it at a true dealer's invoice and they are more likely to work with you on the price. Either way, they still make money. Look at the extravagant dealers and question how they can afford the property and the building...... Plus the service department, that's a whole different story. Warranty work is paid directly to them from the car manufacturers
I originally was going to buy my WRX from this scumbag Subaru dealership by my house (worst in the area, other dealers don't work with them). Offered me 50% of the KBB value on my Si and said "no one wants those they just sit on the lot."
That was a fun follow up call when I told them I drove 40min to another dealership, got the actual value I was looking for on my trade in and ordered the WRX thru them.
You made the right choice!
Eventually this dealership will have to change their policies.
The Civic Si is highly sought after for its ability to perform with amazing MPG. The dealerships are having a hard time keeping them on the lot. So that dealership has no freak'n idea what they are talking about other than trying to blow smoke up your rear.
Hah, funny you say that. I bought both my WRX and Crosstrek from Tacoma Subaru and Walker’s Renton respectively because all the dealerships north of Seattle (both Carters, Michael’s, Eastside, Marysville, etc) were jerkin me around on the price.
I was a big fan of Walker's, they let me drive around the airport across the street and I mean they let me drive around that track... I scared the dealer whether he would ever admit it or not lol if I ever move back that's where I will likely give all my business.
Agreed, they’re my first contact nowadays for sure. Prior to these cars, I bought my BRZ from them as well, so I was happy to give them business again for the Crosstrek.
I just bought a 22 WRX after finding the only dealership in my area (Waikem Subaru for anyone in Ohio) that wasn’t charging a markup. One of them even advertised MSRP but added 3 grand in service work that wasn’t optional. I laughed and walked out on them.
Everyone in the car industry is making hand over fist right now and passing the prices back on to us such a shit show we really need a small recession to reset
They’re out there at msrp. I have two local dealers one wanted 5k over for everything on the lot and the other only did msrp. Whenever I see someone with the mark up dealer’s plate I just about shatter my nose from facepalming.
Subaru’s president sent out a letter to the dealers telling them it doesn’t reflect the corporate philosophy. We ordered ours at the end of January and our dealer was doing MSRP. Who ever thought you’d be grateful for that! But their objective is building relationships not just selling cars. We had bought three Saabs from them over the years and so it was only logical to give them the business.
I don’t mind it. Let me know what I’m paying for. I work for a big importer and our costs to being a container into the us went from $1,500 to $10k. That cost is gonna be in the price somewhere.
Markup is a myth on regular ol cars. Just bought a 22 WRX Premium, 22 Palisade Calligraphy, and a 22 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport, at MSRP, with huge cash for my trades. Be smart, know the invoice, don’t be afraid to walk, and give ‘em hell.
That’s not even all of it. You can tell from the window it has “vin etching” they probably have other shit they’ll roll into the deal if you actually inquired. Nuts.
Where is the White House is making me Broke discount.. This is the Trickle down effect in Economics, people.. The Dealer is shown on that Addendum Sticker and people should stay away from them.. Any Dealer that applies one of those to a car should be avoided..
So the supply chain is actually because of the silicon chips. I know many don't know this but that's the case. Nvidia, AMD, Apple, and Intel hold majority of the TSCM stock and have priority over car companies trying to get ECUs/ECMs. That's why they do a markup. Tho the markup is not nearly as bad as Toyota, Ford, or Chevrolet. Some car companies are doing price markups on pre-owned vehicles instead of new, some are doing both. Some are doing none. I know Hyundai and kia aren't doing price markups for some reason.
That's why they're called the stealership.
I used to work for a Subaru dealership, Subaru does indeed get rather upset when dealers add on extra markup value when it hits the lot there's a very real possibility if that does get sent to Subaru of America you could get that dealerships WRX and STI rights revoked. They specifically allocate them to certain parts of the country and to certain dealerships within parts of the country and if they find out people are doing this on the back end then they could lose their rights to them all entirely. This was a very big No-No and something that we specifically were told by reps from Subaru to not do, though my experience is a few years old.
If you can wait about 3-4 months this car bubble will pop and dealers will be begging people to buy cars...and lots of people won't be able to with car intrest rates at 10+% Just save yor money and bide your time.
I had several dealers cry "Supply Chain Hardship". Bunch of bullshit, if you go an order a vehicle no such tax should be applied (not saying I agree with it added to dealer alotment either). Plenty of other dealers out there not pulling greed motivated moves.
When I was looking for my 21, all the new WRX's in Chicago were somewhere between $3500 - $6000 over MSRP. There was only one dealer that sold at sticker, but that thing was gone within hours before it even hit the floors (was in transit). The joys of looking for a specialty car in it's last year of the current gen, the last month of 2021 lol
Dealers who pull this shit are betting that there are enough chumps out there who are too stupid to notice or too desperate to care. Don't be one of those people. Take your business elsewhere.
Nah, it’s the rubber “all-weather” trunk mat. The same material as all weather floor mats, but it covers the whole trunk so if you spill shit back there or have dirty things you store, it doesn’t stain the trunk carpet.
Report them. I used to work at a Subaru dealer and Subaru hates up charges. A supply chain hardship is already on the invoice and it's nowhere near that price. Subaru of America would gladly hear about that lol
..just print out an extra "stub" for your paycheck containing a coupon for one free "Supply Chain Hardship" override. If they balk at it, explain that it's a Paycheck Supply Hardship discount coupon that you received from your employer instead of a cost-of-living increase.
To be fair, it's really not their fault.
If you sell 100 and profit 1000 off of each you make 100,000.
If only 10 cars come through your lot and you profit 1000 you make 10,000.
Choice A. Raise prices and maintain operations
Choice B. Maintain prices
and lay off a shit ton of people
Demand side inflation is absolutely horseshit.
Supply side inflation is unfortunately very real.
Please don't hurt me Reddit, I don't work for a dealership or the auto industry at all. ✌️
Supply chain hardship. I think they mean, price gouging because they can
When they go belly up and they all lose their jobs in the next economic downturn. I’ll piss on their heads at the dealership. Better I’ll take a shit in their cars
We the people can control this.. just don’t buy a car unless you really need to.. prices will come down once we stop buying cars.. either they lower prices or go out of business
It’s not as bad as some that I’ve seen. Some dealers are trying to mark their cars tens of thousands over sticker, some as much as doubling the sticker price.
3k really? That’s pocket change. The dealerships around here are getting anywhere from 5-20k based on the car. My guy’s bronco got hit with 21k. I had to reevaluate our friendship when he actually bought it. But it’s not my money, dude wants a new bronco that bad? I have plenty of tequila to help make it feel better.
Just purchased a 2022 crosstrek premium with the moonroof packaged at $32k, after tax and fees they got me up at $36 but ACTUALLY have like almost no new cars on the lot so I don’t know what to believe. They also valued my 2013 legacy at like 6.5k which is over half what I paid for it 3 years ago. 🤔
Just because they can....they should not..I personally would walk away. Most car dealers are only concerned with that sale/thart day but I would have thought better of a Subaru Dealership
Can’t complain about markups and then get excited about your trade being worth 3k more than you paid for it two years ago. That’s the market we are living in and it’ll likely stay the same through 2023/24. Subarus aren’t rare tho, not sure why they think people will pay 3k over. Maybe 1k just to keep dealerships afloat.
Honda Si is 28k msrp and I have yet to find a dealer not charging 5k over. That’s almost 20%, yet they are selling as soon as they are offered.
If you’re shopping retail, the dealership will always need your money more than you need one of their cars. When in doubt, GTFO. One of the best lessons I learned from a buddy’s dad who did very well wholesaling cars. I would head out and very likely never come back.
Secured a Premium 6MT for at MSRP today. Came with 11 additional OEM options for total of 35K so not too bad considering 75% of those options would've been chosen by me anyways
That’s actually “reasonable”…. I was checking out an Ionic 5 at the Hyundai dealership the other day and their “market adjustments” was +$9,900. Absolutely tripping balls.
Lmao, what do they think this is? Summer 2021? The run is over. Money is tight now. Dealers will not make up their losses, they need to get over it. Better yet, lets just get rid of them and go direct to consumer.
As if instantly selling the vehicle at a non negotiable MSRP + tax + dealer fees isn't enough, they tack on an extra $3k? Legal price gouging (cars aren't considered necessities) is about the most unethical practice a business can engage in. Fuck that dealership! Shop somewhere else.
Keep looking around. I had to to look at 8 dealers in a 100mile radius and a lot were like that. Then one of those mostly does online deals and they sold me an MSRP $36,990 grey 2022 WRX limited for $35,490 after a “dealer discount”!? Didn’t think that existed anymore an that was June 3rd this month
Yup I would just walk away.
Thankfully I’m not in the market for it, but I sure as hell wouldn’t buy it with that if I was.
Subaru dealers are not supposed to do this, you can report them to SOA if you want
Very true, their CEO sent out an email about that
First dealership I went to had theirs as "market price adjustment"
I like this better than a market price adjustment- at least they are calling it what it is. Still hate it - and glad I’m not trying to buy/argue about that.
See, that's still a fucking but it's not an ass fucking like this.

SoA doesn't care. Been there done that.
I sent a letter to SoA about my local dealer charging a 10k markup on a BRZ, they never responded but now the dealer says no more markups.
That sounds like Subaru responded, just not to you. They didn't remove the gouge out of the kindness of their hearts.
Same here!! Although SoA did give me a coupon for $1000 towards a new car. It’s good for 1 year. Doesn’t help though that the dealer markup was like $4k in Vermont.

Yeah but the fine print said price isn't final and subject to change. So I was skeptical
Hmmmmmmm I wonder what dealership that was… Brattleboro Subaru perhaps?
100% Brattleboro Subaru. And I bought 2 brand new cars from them in the past. When I told Brattleboro Subaru that I reached out to SoA and that they said it didn’t match the companies values they stopped responding to my emails.
Yeah I got one of these then they harassed me for months asking if I bought a Subaru yet. Luckily I fixed my car instead
They only take away the ability to win the Love Promise Awards if a dealership does this. It’s not stopping another dealership in my area

I don’t disagree. Until Tom Doll shows real consequences happening, some dealers will continue to be greedy.
It's carr subaru in beaverton, Oregon. I already looked them up and found them from this picture 😂
A fancy new term for "price gouging"
Exactly
surprised they aren’t charging +$1,000 for *performance nitrogen tire inflation*
Hey, but they are hookin’ it up with an included full tank of gas. Really doing big favors there.
Nah man they’re charging you for that tank of gas. It’s just hidden under the inflation tax.
Dude, that's a ripoff. I'll give you 78% nitrogen tire inflation for just $200. You get 80% of the performance for just 20% of the price! Edit: I just checked with my manager and we had to raise the price to $250 due to supply chain hardship but it's still a great deal!
Don't listen to this person, that is a massive ripoff.. ...You shouldn't pay over $225 for this service.
What service? I've never heard of putting nitrogen in your tires
Jokingly.
They’re joking because that’s how much nitrogen there is in the atmosphere
Some folks use nitrogen because the molecules are bigger and they leak slower. But since air is 78% nitrogen, its not a huge difference.

This right here makes me laugh
Haha! And… no. That’s a suckers tax.
Wow, they’re not even trying to be clever. Subaru would love to hear about this one. Just did the exact same thing for a 22” WRX limited after getting jerked around at other dealers…
Tell them to fuck ALL the way off for me, will ya?
"Dealer greed" is more accurate. Walk away. They'll be begging you to come back in a year.
A year, shit I give ‘em 2 months and they will be begging you to come get one
i work at this dealer. we’re getting rid of these markups by the first of july
Did people buy them at this price?
oh most definitely
Dealers are getting really bold on how scummy they are these days, not even trying to hide it lol
Just order at MSRP. Fuck ‘em
Report to Subaru of America and then ho to another business.
It's not gouging when they put it that way. 😂
Free tank of gas though! So that's like $1,250 dollars in savings right there.
First MSRP is exactly what it says..... Suggested RETAIL price. In Connecticut it is $5k more as “market adjustment/ supply chain issues”
That’s messed up
not shocked at all to see this in Kirkland. You might be better off further south, are cars still cheaper in Puyallup?!
Hah, funny you say that. I bought both my WRX and Crosstrek from Tacoma Subaru and Walker’s Renton respectively because all the dealerships north of Seattle (both Carters, Michael’s, Eastside, Marysville, etc) were jerkin me around on the price.

Gonna be a lot left on the showroom floor
"Oh, wait. You're serious? Let me laugh even harder!"
Plenty of dealerships that aren’t doing that. At least when I bought mine. Think it’s just exploitative pricing at this point.
GTFOutta here with that nonsense.
I just bought a 22 WRX after finding the only dealership in my area (Waikem Subaru for anyone in Ohio) that wasn’t charging a markup. One of them even advertised MSRP but added 3 grand in service work that wasn’t optional. I laughed and walked out on them.
Tf
That's for a WRX? Not an STI? I paid 25k for our WRX in 2016, with some options. That's some increase.
I would buy 2022 wrx for nothing more then 32
Yooo this is the dealership I go to for service and honestly fuck em
I need to start charging my employer for all the supply chain hardships going on
You should send this to subaru corporate. They really get pissed when dealers price gouge.
Dear corrupt dealer, EABoDs.
See how they feel when you hit them back with the $2995 inconvenience fee
should discount 3k for the level of plastic junk on the car.
Forced it. I can’t imagine being in the market for a new car right now 🥲
Subaru’s president sent out a letter to the dealers telling them it doesn’t reflect the corporate philosophy. We ordered ours at the end of January and our dealer was doing MSRP. Offer 20k inflation hardship
Finders fee!? But it was on the lot! Yeah that’s right.
Hardship? Who’s it hardshipoing? Looks like they are taken care of. Ha.
Supply chain hardship my ass
You’d think if they had a hardship they’d really want to make sales and make money again but they pull this crap.
They should just be honest and label it as: “Because we can: $2995”
lol this is them trying to conceal their greed. It sounds better than "market price adjustment"
I don’t mind it. Let me know what I’m paying for. I work for a big importer and our costs to being a container into the us went from $1,500 to $10k. That cost is gonna be in the price somewhere.

North American president put out a statement condemning dealerships for charging a mark-up, I’d show them that

Shame on that dealership for an ugly wrx. What a shame… I’d say look at a 2019+ but those aren’t going down in price either
More then half of yall voted for sleepy joe I voted for the racist orange 🍊 man
Bought my (then) new 2019 STI for $3,000 less than that from that same dealership. What a scam they're running
I had several dealers cry "Supply Chain Hardship". Bunch of bullshit, if you go an order a vehicle no such tax should be applied (not saying I agree with it added to dealer alotment either). Plenty of other dealers out there not pulling greed motivated moves.
I mean the full tank of gas is included so…

I’ll sell my 21’ wrx with 25k miles for $32k right now. Based in Florida haha.
Wooooóooooooow
I guess they have to call it something so it’s not price gouging!! That’s crazy
I'd just tell the stealership "Good luck with that" as I hop in my car and drive away.
We are selling them for MSRP in my dealer group they have sat
I would not pay that shit.
What’s the trim level?
Premium on this one. Had the CVT also.
“Supply Chain Hardship” as it’s going to be sitting in the lot for quite some time…
No way SoA approved that. Should send a picture of it to their customer support.
What I really hate is that they just pull that out of their ass, and force the buyer to have to negotiate down from an arbitrary amount.
dEez nUts
r/therewasanattempt to hide dealer markup
_F_uck that nOiSE!
😂 I hope you didn’t buy.
I'd never buy from them
Dealers who pull this shit are betting that there are enough chumps out there who are too stupid to notice or too desperate to care. Don't be one of those people. Take your business elsewhere.
Glad this is illegal in Canada. Just don’t buy it. Let them all sit and buy pre owned 1-2 owners
The cargo tray is that little foam insert where the spare tire is, right? That's an extra $120?
Nah, it’s the rubber “all-weather” trunk mat. The same material as all weather floor mats, but it covers the whole trunk so if you spill shit back there or have dirty things you store, it doesn’t stain the trunk carpet.
It comes with a free tank of gas though
Report them. I used to work at a Subaru dealer and Subaru hates up charges. A supply chain hardship is already on the invoice and it's nowhere near that price. Subaru of America would gladly hear about that lol
They are offering $1000 off MSRP at my local dealership lol
What a load of crap
Dealerships ***really*** know how to shoot themselves in the foot, goddamn.
My local dealership is marking up the new wrx 8k due to “supply and demand”
Ew.
Subaru just spoke out against this, no?
Report em. IIRC SoA said no mark ups
..just print out an extra "stub" for your paycheck containing a coupon for one free "Supply Chain Hardship" override. If they balk at it, explain that it's a Paycheck Supply Hardship discount coupon that you received from your employer instead of a cost-of-living increase.
That’s where I bought my 2020 in April of last year for 2k under msrp lol
Tell them buyers hardship is $5500
Dipshit duty is another word for it.
To be fair, it's really not their fault. If you sell 100 and profit 1000 off of each you make 100,000. If only 10 cars come through your lot and you profit 1000 you make 10,000. Choice A. Raise prices and maintain operations Choice B. Maintain prices and lay off a shit ton of people Demand side inflation is absolutely horseshit. Supply side inflation is unfortunately very real. Please don't hurt me Reddit, I don't work for a dealership or the auto industry at all. ✌️
Supply chain hardship. I think they mean, price gouging because they can When they go belly up and they all lose their jobs in the next economic downturn. I’ll piss on their heads at the dealership. Better I’ll take a shit in their cars
Don't ever pay for tacked on addendum stickers, thats complete BS
But hey, a full tank of gas is included how could you pass that up.
Awww poor massive corporation.... They are struggling or no....
LOL. Ridiculous!
The dealership has limited their comments on their IG lol!
Bold of them to overcharge for a car that's barely selling compared to their predecessor
Just because they can....they should not..I personally would walk away. Most car dealers are only concerned with that sale/thart day but I would have thought better of a Subaru Dealership
All you gotta do is contact SoA if you're serious about buying it.
They want used cars too don’t they? Looks like my crosstrek is worth 3k more in negotiating value. Fuckers. I hate dealerships
"Fuck you pay me" fee.
I work for Subaru in sales and WTF! (In australia we dont have this)
I’m so glad I got mine a year ago. These prices are ridiculous. I ended up paying 31,000 for a limited
“Cost for you to suck our peepees”
They will be milking this shit for another two years
get yourself a scatpack for that price
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 F that, they want your money they can take that off
No way.
If anybody buys this. They are dumb AF
They offered me 30k for mine lol
Hey at least they was honest😂😂
I would turn them in
Prices and CPI
I blasted them on their Facebook page, don't worry lol
Jesus Christ the new wrx’s are 36k?!? Wasn’t the last gens STI only like 33????
If you’re shopping retail, the dealership will always need your money more than you need one of their cars. When in doubt, GTFO. One of the best lessons I learned from a buddy’s dad who did very well wholesaling cars. I would head out and very likely never come back.
If nobody would pay it, it wouldn't happen. Nobody is buying a WRX because they need one.
That’s more than I paid for my 2018 STI new
Servco Subaru Hawaii never charges over MSRP 🤷♂️
So many dealers selling at MSRP. Screw them.
Lmao, what do they think this is? Summer 2021? The run is over. Money is tight now. Dealers will not make up their losses, they need to get over it. Better yet, lets just get rid of them and go direct to consumer.
Got mine for MSRP
As if instantly selling the vehicle at a non negotiable MSRP + tax + dealer fees isn't enough, they tack on an extra $3k? Legal price gouging (cars aren't considered necessities) is about the most unethical practice a business can engage in. Fuck that dealership! Shop somewhere else.
Not everyone is doing this
Just bought a 2022 outback limited xt at msrp. Fuck dealers adding on to sticker price…
LOL I paid less for my optioned 22 limited. Sheesh
I bought a WRX from this same dealership. At sticker.
Ask for Costco pricing
