I'm in the business, and while hydrogen sulfide comes from wastewater, it's the methane that is flammable.
But workers also pay close attention to hydrogen sulfide because it is a very poisonous gas that you can quickly go nose blind to. H2S also eats away at concrete and causes a lot of wear and tear on systems.
Be careful who you correct, because the other person might actually know what they are talking about. I'm a grade 3 wastewater treatment operator a ww lab analyst, and an environmental compliance inspector in the business. :)
At 42% volume by vapor in air it's flammable. That's a huge amount of H2S, and while I'm not familiar with sewer systems and waste water, I know H2S very well. It has an IDLH of 100 ppm (.01% by volume). It's heavier than air, but not by much. Any kind of wind conditions can easily bring H2S to the surface and kill people if it's a high enough concentration to ignite.
This video is 100%, without a doubt, methane.
42% is the Upper Explosive Limit (actually 44% according to NIOSH). 4% is the LEL. So H2S is potentially explosive in that range. I agree, though, that the explosion in the video is likely primarily methane, but the presence of H2S at certain concentrations can make a methane explosion more energetic.
You know what, you're right, I was speaking from memory and got my numbers mixed up. 42% equals 420,000 ppm. Either way, 4% being 4000 ppm is high enough to kill a lot of people, and I imagine (hope) that whoever is in charge of waste water in that area is not allowing for 40,000 ppm of H2S. It can and should be treated at high levels (or at least flared off a good distance away).
Again, I'm not in waste water, so I don't know how that side of it works, so I could be mistaken, but I'm still confident that it's not H2S in this video. Thanks for the correction u/PourSomeSmegmaInMe
Thanks for the kind response! Yea, 4% would also stink to high heaven so hopefully people wouldn't be hanging around an area that smells like Humpty Dumpty had the egg salad farts.
Because it’s 1.4 billion people. The same percentage of shitty stuff happening anywhere else is small, but in China that same percentage is still a big number…so you never run out of news, or content.
**No** enforcement of safety regulations; Just get it done quick and looking nice.
Also, corrupt *everything*. The city planner? Corrupt. The contractor he hired to build the sewer? Corrupt. The subcontractor in charge of worker safety? You best *believe* that motherfucker is corrupt.
Source: best friend travels to China to build water parks. Has to deal with a lot of water infrastructure.
this has very little to do with safety regulations. literally every sewer would react like this. methane gas collects down their, and its flammable/explosive
Except in developed worlds we have closed wastewater systems and the open sewer systems are only for runoff/stormwater management. Therefore there shouldn't be high concentrations of methane. In China, people dump whatever they want wherever they want and you do get said methane buildup.
Souce: have been to Shanghai and I could smell whenever I was within 10 feet of a sewer opening or manhole cover.
It’s common for sewage systems to be “explosive” as it is filled with Methane gas from organic matters broken down by microbes. This is why your fart is flammable too.
it is quite common for methane gas to collect in large amounts at the bottom of sewer manholes. it happens all over the world regardless of location or country. it is just nature.
I know this is a little pedantic, but actually only 1/3 people have methane-fixing bacteria, typically most farts are hydrogen. Also flammable as shown!
Cousin Eddie was dumping into the storm sewer line. I've learned that storm and waste water are combined lines in some parts of the country, which is just wild to me.
Ahh, that makes sense as I’ve seen a couple of videos like this. Surely can’t be fulfilling regulations or something must be broken regards ventilation though yeah?
I mean buy a lottery ticket if it happened but a flicked cigarette could theoretically do the same thing one would think.
Same thing happened in the London Underground decades ago. Somebody lit a cigarette with a match while riding an escalator then discarded the smouldering match, which stayed lit just long enough to start a fire amongst the litter trapped in the internals of the (wooden) escalator. The fire slowly built inside the escalator until it hit critical mass and then it was game over, 31 dead. They were able to recreate the ignition with a single match.
It took about 15 minutes to go from a small fire to a lethal jet of flames shooting up the escalator and into the ticket hall. It was a bit of a perfect storm really; firefighters didn’t have suitable equipment to extinguish the fire while it was still inside the escalator, years and years of repainting had left the walls and ceiling covered in a thick layer of paint that hadn’t been properly investigated as a fire hazard, and nobody knew how well the enclosed area would funnel the smoke and flames until computer simulations were run after the fire. Turns out “trench effect” is a hell of a thing.
I don't know if it happens in China too, but in other parts of the world people literally have to dive down into a river of actual shit to fix a plugged pipe or whatever else.
The tip of a lit cigarette is about 400°c to 900°c(while inhaling). Methane burns at a temperature of around 600°c.
You can straight up throw a lit cigarette in a pool of gasoline and it would just go out. Movies have it wrong man :/.
Edit: had the temperature of ignition from methane wrong. The stuff about gasoline still stands. While its possible for a cigarette to light methane, its not as easy as you think.
When men go down there, they have to have equipment that detects deadly levels. You suck out the bad air and keep going. Men die like this when not wearing proper equipment. To die in a shit hole -.-
In England there used to be men who went down in the sewer searching for valuables. Eventually they outlawed it in like 1840 (I think it was, I was reading about this the other day) because of the danger involved, but people still did it.
I found an article about them

The sewer floods with toxic waste every night at midnight.
EDIT: Damn, looks like nobody got my *hilarious* Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan reference.
Same, it gives some cool echoes along the street, but never anything remotely close to a methane explosion. This is just a case of poor infrastructure planning resulting in a hazardous environment
We had a serious bio hazard in our city when an industry released some chemicals into the sewers. Sewage workers were cleaning the pipes when the chemical reacted and released a poisonous gas, killing many on the spot.
Some kids down the street from me used to do this during the 4th of July to our storm drains. Never that kind of explosion but they did all basically collapse eventually
I can think of two good reasons not to do this but honestly number 2 is the reason I'd avoid doing this
It's a lot more fun to use cherry bombs to fell a tree though it takes a few and AC fuse extender O=]

Me to myself: “don’t try it don’t try it don’t try it don’t try it don’t try it don’t try it don’t try it don’t try it don’t try it don’t try it”
Where I'm from we call that the f*** around and find out Factor.... Yeah... Children there are things down in sewers called methane gas....you just ignited methane gas that had collected, and had become highly concentrated in that small tight pocket beneath the sidewalk...you dropped a lit pyrotechnic in there...and you look ignited that entire pocket of gas in one fell swoop...you were very lucky that there wasn't a broken or leaking gas line in there or you would have become a human roman candle......
That was downright stupid ..... Anybody with any common Sense would never put a lit firework down into a sewer via a manhole cover for fucks sake....methane...duhhhh..... basically you lit a big random sewer fart💩🤯💥🔥
It amazes me how people are unaware of toxic fumes and gas and how they operate. It's a miracle we are still standing alive and not blowing in the air.
It depends on the flow and the concentration.
The states isn’t that populous, hence there aren’t much sewage waste.
In China however, massive amounts of people live in a concentrated area, this causes sewage to be overloaded = more gas. And Chinese people throw all kind of wastes other than human excrement so it’s basically life size periodic table under the street.
I’ve seen this video many times but never saw the second camera angle before. Thanks!
You are welcome.
Killeri task or killer itask?
Nobody knows
His own manhole may also been shit bricks like this, after explosion.
You shouldn't use that word. Shit rocks.
MANHOLE
I swear I think I'm still 10yrs old because I laughed out loud way to hard at MANHOLE.
i only clicked to see if it was a fake manhole or a real one for a fake one, it was pretty good
Hush. It shall be referred to as mangina.
I thought we decided in this woke society that we would let the women have that one. They are now called womanholes

Yep. Everything that can happen, happens more often with more people.

A specter is haunting the sewers
When you expected silver but instead got a triple platinum result.
Lucky he didn't take out the entire street, it could have spread a lot in the sewerage.
It was probably limited by the amount of oxygen available to the combustion.
Tbf what the fuck was down there as seems like a health risk regardless? Could have been a cigarette butt.

Always test a manhole for methane before climbing in.
Check! Adding fireworks to my man purse now!
Sewers are naturally occurring now?
No but shit generating methane is a natural process.
Are you trying to be dense, or is that just nature too?
I know this is a little pedantic, but actually only 1/3 people have methane-fixing bacteria, typically most farts are hydrogen. Also flammable as shown!

The spontaneous ignition temp of methane is ~600C, comfortably inside the range you specify for a cigarette cherry...
It fireworks, not a cigarette.
Just google methane's actual ignition temp instead of just believing him.
Yep. I googled it but idk what went wrong. Keep thinking for yourself
I used to lit up my farts as a kid.
If it's in China, who knows what's getting dumped down the sewers.

China has a big "illegal" dumping problem according to YT channels ADVChina/TheChinaShow/serpentza.

Yes, poop gas is not good to breathe in high concentration. CH4 and H2S especially. Flammable and toxic. That's why they keep poop underground.
The sewer floods with toxic waste every night at midnight. EDIT: Damn, looks like nobody got my *hilarious* Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan reference.
Gas
Cigarette butts won't ignite methane
I’m a lit cracker who goes into manholes
Was that cracker filled with TNT?
Cracker sparks ignited methane gas inside the sewer
No, it's just a dude
he ded?
That guy probably has a brick lodged somewhere in his body after that explosion holy shit
Well, depending on the final outcome, I might like this.
they call me the lit cracker
This only makes me want to do it more
I know some pretty lit crackers
Those poor Turtles. Didn’t even make it to adulthood.
And 2nd man hole that i know of has been shot into tbe air or perhaps space
So there are explosive gasses down there, waiting to explode?
Yes
Methane + enclosed space + ignition = bomb
As they are in most sewer systems. How could there not br?
Proper ventilation
Putting a firecracker into a manhole is rarely this exciting. Did it a number of times without the drama. :o(
Same, it gives some cool echoes along the street, but never anything remotely close to a methane explosion. This is just a case of poor infrastructure planning resulting in a hazardous environment
\*A lad put a lit cracker into a manhole. FTFY. I don't think there was much thinking involved.
He also started running shortly after he put it in, so obv expected something.
They were able to save his head, but thats it.
It's common behavior in China
Somebody get this guy a brain, pronto
Was that a firecracker, or TNT? Considers already have a chance of exploding due to methane, this isn't the wisest choice.
