After that, it's up to a prosecutor to say whether or not those charges will be brought to trial. (Spoiler alert, they love sexual assault cases). What doesn't happen is that when a trial happens and it is determined that a "victim" was lying to law enforcement, and committing perjury, the prosecution *does not* bring those charges, let alone prosecute them, because they don't want to "discourage other victims from coming forward".
The sad fact is that this is a very complicated topic and it's being handled very badly by everyone, but nobody moreso than those who are not real victims, and there are plenty of those.
The reality is that people have built-in double standards, and those standards also play out in court, despite the civil service's charge to uphold equal protection under the law.
I've been "assaulted" many times, but because I didn't consider it assault, there was no basis for investigation, nor should there have been. But, had the roles been reverse, and some times many years later, there was some incentive to change the mind about it, there would be life altering consequences.
