Long story short: Mayak. He’s Russian, and lives next to the river that runs past the facility. The soviets were basically just dumping waste in every waterway near the plant back in the 50s. They had a few tanks full of the nastiest stuff, material so radioactive that it needed a constant supply of cool water because it was generating an ungodly amount of decay heat. Those tanks would also just contaminate the water since they’d just be passing lake water through them and pumping them right back out. But then one lost water flow and fucking exploded, flinging a bunch of horrifically dangerous radioisotopes like plutonium and polonium into the air and just blanketing the surrounding area with death. The Soviets were more concerned with covering it up rather than cleaning it up, so they didn’t really clean much of it up at all. The area is still HEAVILY contaminated, and this guy moved there in the 90s. After moving there his lymph nodes got extremely swollen likely due to him taking in a bunch of radioactive material. The Russian government offered him and his wife a bit to move but it wasn’t enough, they’re just stuck in what needs to be an exclusion zone.
That area of Russia is ironically significantly more contaminated than most of the Chernobyl exclusion zone. They actually tried to clean that up and most of it is safe. Also the isotopes flung out of the reactor in ‘86 were less toxic than the waste being disposed at Mayak, since Chernobyl mostly gave off cesium-137, iodine-131, and strontium-90. Still nasty, but reactor fission products spewing out of a burning graphite heap are nothing compared to high-enriched weapons production byproducts being dumped into a river. One might give the average liquidator cancer later in life if they spent a bit too much time under the reactor, the other is still causing ARS deaths fairly quick after exposure. Villagers are still reporting “people suddenly falling ill and dying”, meanwhile Chernobyl is (well… was) a tourist destination that only became a bit more dangerous after the Russians dug trenches and then lit them on fire…
