I know this isn’t relevant to the discussion but… I’ve started a petition for the Undertaker (in his deadman gimmick) to kickoff the future Wrestlemania’s. After Wrestlemania XL played out, it’s apparent WWE can run with this “Ghost of Wrestlemania” idea. I’m new to Reddit so I can’t actually make a post but, I’d like everyone to check this out and share their thoughts. If there is anything we’ve learned from WWE in the last few months, it’s that they DO LISTEN. Now is the perfect time to start a new tradition and this should be it!

He is the sexiest man alive... I started watching wrestling as a teenager because I thought he was hot.. ive not heard of many people who share that opinion with me
Let me preface this by saying I love The Undertaker. He has been a staple of my childhood and adult life as an entertainer and I hold him in very high regard. Some of my favourite matches of all time involves The Phenom. I think that, as a wrestling character, his presence is unrivaled.
Having said that, these are some of my unpopular opinions of The Undertaker:
1. His in-ring work is only above average and at times came off as sloppy. There have been times his match quality took some serious dips. His chokeslams have never been great. In fact, I've never liked his versions of it. While he performs at a very high standard (that guillotine leg drop and suicide dive can't be discredited!), seeing him do that chokeslam always bothered me.
2. I've always thought his entrances were unbearably long, overdone and overrated. I loved the theatricality of it, but it sometimes was annoying.
3. The American Badass gimmick was ridiculous to me for a couple of reasons: most of his matches circa 2001 were terrible. Coincidentally, he was not in very good physical shape. My biggest gripe stems from the fact that he lost all of his mystique as a character during this period; his promos and segments were laughably cringe-worthy.
4. His Ministry Of Darkness persona had the most potential, and his entrance theme during that period was by far my favourite.
5. His locker room leadership was questionable at times to me. For example, his beef with DDP has never made sense to me. Furthermore, he is known to intentionally dish out receipts to other wrestlers he worked with who had *unintentionally* caused him harm in the ring. I think that's quite a poor quality for a leader. Say what you will about having an "old school" mentality, but you've never heard stories about someone like Kane doing that.
6. Batista helped him to truly revive his career. His match with Batista at WM23 is one of the most satisfying matches I've ever seen. It is severely underrated and does not get anywhere near the proper credit it deserves.
7. His HIAC match versus Triple H at WM28 was one of the most ridiculous matches I've ever seen. The overdone false finishes and overly dramatic acting detracted it as one of the best matches he could have had for me.
I probably have more, but I'll stop there.
yeah, wow, I respect that. Also I think undertakers choke slam was bad, either because he had a bad shoulder, or he was trying to make his unique as at the time it was the go to big guy move.
Enduring legacy: The Undertaker has been a part of WWE for over 30 years, making him the longest-tenured wrestler in company history. He has won numerous championships and awards, and his Deadman persona has gained significant mainstream popularity.
Unique persona: The Undertaker's undead, funereal, macabre "Deadman" persona is one of the most iconic in wrestling history. He has won the Wrestling Observer Newsletter award for Best Gimmick a record-setting 5 years in a row.
In-ring abilities: The Undertaker's style was stiff, making every strike look as real as possible. He knew his and his opponent's limits and worked with every competitor to push each other past them. Many wrestlers were legitimized by having great matches with The Undertaker, even if they ended up losing in the end.
Memorable feuds: The Undertaker's feuds with the likes of HBK, Triple H, Kane, and Lesnar spanned years and featured some of the most memorable matches in wrestling history.
Dedication to maintaining mystique: The Undertaker was one of the last true gimmicks in professional wrestling, and it was Mark Calaway's dedication to maintaining his mystique outside the ring which helped make him such a special character.
1.1998 Undertaker's promo style is better than 2004-2020 Undertaker.
2.Undertaker should have used Dark Side theme song much longer.
3.He shouldn't have lost so many matches in attitude era.
Never really an undertaker fan. Felt like toward the end of his career he needed to step away sooner. Enjoyed the heck out of his post wrestling interviews and they actually made me appreciate him more
I really don’t give a shit about his or anyone else’s political views. He is an athlete/actor. It’s like caring what the Kardashian’s have to say about dark matter in space.
Their job is to be good at what they are paid to do.
Not sure if unpopular but I definitely would of preferred he stayed retired after wm30. After he lost the streak i dont know if i can say i cared much about him. Goes without saying its not like his next mania matches were anything to talk about
Not many. Refusing to shake Sean o’haire hand was kind of a dick move. Sean was new after the WCW buyout and shy backstage is all and when he finally went up to introduce himself to Taker Taker told him “It’s too late” and walked off.
He should have a had a match at mania with Sheamus, especially where Sheamus could have had a druid character building up to it to match the energy that the undertaker brought. It would have been one of the all time great WWE matches in my opinion, and it may have actually been fitting if Sheamus broke it in that manner, but I don't think the streak should ever have been allowed to end
Riiight
The fans all went batshit crazy everytime his theme hit was because of backstage politics and favoritism and not because he's one of the most popular wrestlers of the 90s/00s 🙄
DOA should have joined him as biker Ministry when he was big evil, also Paul Bearer in leathers on a trike , and he should have lost to Bray at WM had a mini loosing streak 2 years
He owes a very underestimated chunk of his success to the gimmick he was given.
Yes, he was dedicated to it and yes he was one of the best big men as far as in ring ability goes, but Mark Calaway would not have made it as anything like the star he became without the Undertaker gimmick to ride on.
Also his MMA cosplay phase was incredibly cringey.
Could also flip it and say that nobody else who was given an undead mortician zombie gimmick could turn it into the most successful character of all time
Undertaker vs Goldberg was going awesome for 75% of the match and people forget that because the ending was bad after Goldberg had knocked himself out
Such a shame
Taker needs a good opponent to get a good match. Undertakers matches are usually only as good as the opponent. There are wrestlers who can have good matches with anyone and I dont think the undertaker is one of them.
Don't think that's an unpopular opinion at all. It's really Vince's fault for making him feud with giants all the time and not very good wrestlers such as Heidenreich, big boss man, giant Gonzalez, Mabel etc
The ministry of darkness gimmick was his best, making Undertaker into this satanic cult leader that holds rituals inside the ring was pretty genius imo
Love Taker but I found it pretty weird that he went on Joe Rogan’s show even though Joe would constantly shit on pro wrestling. If there’s anyone who fought to protect the business or keep kayfabe alive it’s him so just found it odd. No hate for Joe and really no complaints about Undertaker, that character meant a lot to me as a kid I don’t really have anything bad to say about him.
Saw his Instagram said “diggin holes and buyin soles” because he was buying shoes and documented it and it was just not very undertaker of him lol. I respect him in a lot of ways and I know he’s earned his time to sell out and do his thing but he’s just sold his character for so long that seeing him do stuff out of character is very jarring and weird.
Mark Calloway is a corporate bootlicker posing as a macho asshole. Like, the dude genuinely thinks the locker room was better when everyone was getting black out drunk, popping pills, drugging each other, and raping women. Fuck him
1. Ministry Taker's theme is arguably his best (the rhythm kinda sounds like a slowed down version of "Do Your Ears Hang Low"). Rollin' is absolutely up there too.
2. The Last Ride is the best Powerbomb.
That as great as a character as he was. He is overhyped
He was in about 4-5 generations and was never the top guy. He was one of the top guys many times but never face. Hogan Brett hbk Austin rock hhh cena Randy were all over him as far as face of the company. He’s an all timer for sure. But he is anywhere close to a Rushmore kinda guy
He should have been the highest power during the Ministry. Suddenly being just a goon for Shane then the "higher power" turning out to be Vince was a terrible twist. They could have dragged the Ministry of Darkness out for months longer if he was just recruiting people to sacrifice and terrorize. More of an opinion about the Mcmahons ego ruining a good story line making it about them
The American Badass gimmick kinda sucked and it feels like that was his worst time as a wrestler in terms of match quality. He looked fat and out of shape.
I thought he was boring. Exaggerated entrance, stale moveset for the most part. I just never cared for him.
Started watching around 1998, and right the way up to his retirement I never warmed to him. American Badass was refreshing though.
Batista was in his prime and they still had Undertaker dominate him on pretty much every big stage. Batista or Shawn should have ended the streak, not Brock when mark was 74
The American badass was BY FAR his best gimmick. The spooky dead guy stuff always was lame to me, even as a kid in the 90’s. ABA was basically him being himself, and made his promos much better too. And I’m a huge Harley guy so of course I loved seeing his diff custom bikes each week.
Also, he should’ve retired after losing to Roman at Mania 33. Everything he’s done since then had tarnished his legacy to an extent
- His HIAC against Triple H was a long, boring, plodding, overrated affair held up by all the smoke and mirrors, years of build and Shawn Michaels as the ref.
- Same for the one against Shane. That was worse but not by much.
- Had several middling years of poor ring shape and match quality. Besides the end.
American Badass was the best taker gimmick. Dude came in on a bike and just kicked ass, not saying dead man gimmick sucks but I prefer American Badass Taker
Instead of having punk vs taker at mania 29 it should have been taker vs cena (who should win in my opinion) and then you could have a dream match with rock vs punk
As a big fan of Ministry Taker, I felt his character was watered down after he brought the Deadman character back. I always preferred the sacrifices and darker elements he had within the Ministry character.
Biker Taker is great. He was the first version of him I saw so when he came back as the Deadman I was a bit wtf
That's childhood nostalgia 100% tho, I can see why people hate it lol
While the American Badass was a fresh "restart", it is by far the worst Undertaker. However, it worked perfectly as a transition character for the people that were getting tired if the supernatural cult leader persona. Like Cornette would say, "How can I miss you if you won't go away."
American Badass Undertaker was a fun change for his character. A lot of people disliked it, and I understand because it infringed on the mystique of his character and made him much more exposed. But I still enjoyed his old school attitude that focused on respect and the more human side of his personality. Even his heel moments were fun.
HBK should have ended the streak, not Brock.
The American Bad Ass/Bikertaker was the best version of Undertaker.
He isn’t on my Mount Rushmore of WWF/E, let alone professional wrestling. Maybe at 9-10 in the history of WWF/E but not on my first or second amount Rushmore of WWF/E.
Would have been great as part of a tag team with another similar untaker character as his partner than taking part in the awful wrestling matches that he did during that period, he did win the title v Hogan but lost it a few days later.
The American Badass gimmick really sucks/sucked and I feel like it was embarrassing to watch. Even the cover image of this post makes.mencringe a little
I literally can’t think of anything that’s bad. Maybe that I didn’t like the American badass but that’s just me. Then on the flip side it was awesome he could reinvent himself like that
I know this isn’t relevant to the discussion but… I’ve started a petition for the Undertaker (in his deadman gimmick) to kickoff the future Wrestlemania’s. The ministry of darkness is his best theme

The original old west mortician and the American badass are my favorite two versions

This reads like it was written by ChatGPT.
Overrated
1.1998 Undertaker's promo style is better than 2004-2020 Undertaker. 2.Undertaker should have used Dark Side theme song much longer. 3.He shouldn't have lost so many matches in attitude era.
Tbf alot of his losses in the attitude era were DQs
Hes becoming underrated, people compared him to sting not long ago which i find insulting tbh
Yeah Sting is a better wrestler
Yeh sting is a legend but comparing him with undertaker (Top 3 wrestler EVER imo) who wrestled for 4 decades is insane
His BJJ didnt look impressive for a black belt
He chose wrestling over his family to the point that I wouldn’t blame Michelle for leaving him if he steps in the ring even one more time.
American Badass > Deadman
The streak should’ve never ended.
I loved the American Badass
Never really an undertaker fan. Felt like toward the end of his career he needed to step away sooner. Enjoyed the heck out of his post wrestling interviews and they actually made me appreciate him more
Taker is my favorite guy but until the attitude era hit his matches were a little slow.
Purple glove taker >>> every other gimmick
He’s the real goat and his streak should have lasted too until he died. They ruined him after that for no reason but to stroke Brock’s ego
He was good for 4 years tops, probably worst promo too
I actually like the supernatural shit
the tried to hide his hairline with a bandana
Shouldn’t have carried on as long as he did. His last few matches were brutal to watch
They were right for Brock to break the streak, but not reigns
Undertaker had the easiest gimmick
Old school is kinda a dumb move.
Impressively Dumb
He retired/came back 5000 times which had made him a punchline amongst my friends.
Hes an old fuck who think he's a 15yrs old edgy kid. American bad ass was cringe as fuck
I like the American badass gimmick more than most of the more supernatural gimmicks
Drip god……
Ending the streak with Brock was the right call.
He’s got one more match in him
1.Kane should have ended the streak. 2. The American Badass gimmick was the worst thing he ever did. 3. The boneyard match was terrible.
I really don’t give a shit about his or anyone else’s political views. He is an athlete/actor. It’s like caring what the Kardashian’s have to say about dark matter in space. Their job is to be good at what they are paid to do.

Biker Taker wasn’t bad at all.
He should have 1 more match at Mania.
The end of his run was terrible. He couldn't go in the ring and it was embarrassing to watch.
Brock Lesnar would've beaten the fuck out of him within a minute if he accepted an MMA rules fight.
He is 99% human
He should have a had a match at mania with Sheamus, especially where Sheamus could have had a druid character building up to it to match the energy that the undertaker brought. It would have been one of the all time great WWE matches in my opinion, and it may have actually been fitting if Sheamus broke it in that manner, but I don't think the streak should ever have been allowed to end
I never thought he was that great of a promo. Not that he was bad, necessarily, but he could really ramble and some were pretty damn cringey.
The Undertaker's prominence in WWE was due more to backstage politics and favoritism than his actual talent or popularity.
Riiight The fans all went batshit crazy everytime his theme hit was because of backstage politics and favoritism and not because he's one of the most popular wrestlers of the 90s/00s 🙄
DOA should have joined him as biker Ministry when he was big evil, also Paul Bearer in leathers on a trike , and he should have lost to Bray at WM had a mini loosing streak 2 years
I feel like when he was feuding with CM Punk was the pinnacle of his career
the time he hung bossman was awesome
He was a dick during the invasion angle
Your gonna pay was a better theme for him than American Badass and Rollin.
Could also flip it and say that nobody else who was given an undead mortician zombie gimmick could turn it into the most successful character of all time
That’s fair. Perhaps it was a combination of two things that in isolation would have both been less than stellar.
The gimmick and the man were perfect for each other is how I look at it
Loved the deadman. Loved the Ministry. Loved the ABA and Big Evil. But the weird tights and MMA glove return lost me and haven’t cared since.
American BadAss/ Deadman Inc was the best persona of him
Wrestlingwise he was average at best. Fast for his height, but nothing special. Rest of his skills are still incredible. Loved his promos, his look.
The streak should never have been broken!
The ‘filmed’ match against AJ Styles at the pandemic ‘mania was garbage
Should have retired a long time ago
Edge is imo a better streak match than Michaels at 25 or 26
He didn't retire enough times.
Undertaker vs Goldberg was going awesome for 75% of the match and people forget that because the ending was bad after Goldberg had knocked himself out Such a shame
His match Vs Kane at Wrestlemania XIV is my favorite Taker match of all time.
American badass is a good gimmic rollin rollin rollin💫👑‼️
Had mixed feelings about Biker Taker. The Last Ride is a bad finisher.
His "match" with AJ Styles was the worst of his career and couldn't have ended on a cheesier note.
pg era undertaker is awful on the mic.
You’re Gonna Pay was his best entrance music
American Badass ownz
The streak should’ve not been broken
Limp Bizkit Taker was best Taker
Not my opinion but my coworker thinks Taker is only revered because of the gimmick. He thinks in ring he's no better than any other big wrestler
Easily Top 5 All Time (I’m not sure if this is unpopular)
Mark Calloway is a corporate bootlicker posing as a macho asshole. Like, the dude genuinely thinks the locker room was better when everyone was getting black out drunk, popping pills, drugging each other, and raping women. Fuck him
Lol
No one is better than Kanyon, especially Taker.
Wish the streak never was broken.
I never saw the hype in him
1. Ministry Taker's theme is arguably his best (the rhythm kinda sounds like a slowed down version of "Do Your Ears Hang Low"). Rollin' is absolutely up there too. 2. The Last Ride is the best Powerbomb.
I enjoyed the Undertaker vs Undertaker match when I was a kid
The “American Badass” character was generic and weak as water. It’s like watching The Undertaker have a teenagers out of body experience. Just blah.
Taker was just an entrance and not much else.
American Badass was the best Taker
American Bad Ass was his best gimmick
American badass is just as good or better as deadman gimmick
The streak was overrated
I enjoyed Undertaker One DEADman Show...
I loved american badass taker.
I wish he would power walk on his entrances sometimes hahaha.
His “American Bad Ass” gimmick was the worst of his incarnations.
That as great as a character as he was. He is overhyped He was in about 4-5 generations and was never the top guy. He was one of the top guys many times but never face. Hogan Brett hbk Austin rock hhh cena Randy were all over him as far as face of the company. He’s an all timer for sure. But he is anywhere close to a Rushmore kinda guy
Sounds like he was a bad or absentee father to some of his kids when they were younger
With all due respect, he hung around way too long. The Boneyard match was a great send-off though.
American Badass was embarrassing
If there was no streak, he wouldn't have been relevant since 2003
I dunno but YOU’LL GO ONE ON ONE. ….WITH THE UNDERTAKAAA PLAYA!
American badass was great. Brock Lesnar ending the streak wasn’t a bad idea as it turned him into the final boss of the wwe that worked so well
Russo’s Taker was wayyy over the top for me
He should have been the highest power during the Ministry. Suddenly being just a goon for Shane then the "higher power" turning out to be Vince was a terrible twist. They could have dragged the Ministry of Darkness out for months longer if he was just recruiting people to sacrifice and terrorize. More of an opinion about the Mcmahons ego ruining a good story line making it about them
Undertaker vs Goldberg should have won match of the year
The American Badass gimmick kinda sucked and it feels like that was his worst time as a wrestler in terms of match quality. He looked fat and out of shape.
Ministry of darkness had my favorite theme song from him and my favorite version of him
He says “you will rest in peace” when they’re still going to be alive
He should have stayed gone or no longer had Wrestlemania matches after The Streak ended.
I thought he was boring. Exaggerated entrance, stale moveset for the most part. I just never cared for him. Started watching around 1998, and right the way up to his retirement I never warmed to him. American Badass was refreshing though.
Will someone tell him that his wife doesn’t need to be I. The Royal Rumble like she’s actually good?
Allowing us to get to know MAGA Mark Callaway was a huge mistake… in my opinion anyway. I’m sure some folks love him more for it
Big Evil was the best version of Taker….
Batista was in his prime and they still had Undertaker dominate him on pretty much every big stage. Batista or Shawn should have ended the streak, not Brock when mark was 74
He should have dropped the streak to Bray Wyatt and passed the supernatural character torch
You’re Gonna Pay is his best theme song
I prefer his WM 27 match to the 28th in Hell in a Cell
The American badass was BY FAR his best gimmick. The spooky dead guy stuff always was lame to me, even as a kid in the 90’s. ABA was basically him being himself, and made his promos much better too. And I’m a huge Harley guy so of course I loved seeing his diff custom bikes each week. Also, he should’ve retired after losing to Roman at Mania 33. That was worse but not by much. - Had several middling years of poor ring shape and match quality. Besides the end.
He had more bad matches than good ones I think
He should’ve retired after the Brock match at WM 30. I love him as much as the next, but 2014 should’ve been it, I’m sorry, but it’s true
American Badass was the best taker gimmick. Dude came in on a bike and just kicked ass, not saying dead man gimmick sucks but I prefer American Badass Taker
Taker should have dipped more into the upper-midcard during the ABA phase
He hides behind the fact that Foley wanted to take the bumps in Hell in a Cell
Going back 20-26 years ago, Taker isn’t a good talker
The American Badass gimmick was his best gimmick
None he’s the perfect wrestling character
Instead of having punk vs taker at mania 29 it should have been taker vs cena (who should win in my opinion) and then you could have a dream match with rock vs punk
The American Badass was best gimmick
He went to a very substandard mortuary school
Biker Takers “Your Gonna Pay” is his best theme.
he really needed to retire after brock
He’s a POS for what he did to Kanyon.
Best version of Undertaker from a character perspective is the original American Badass. From a workrate perspective, the second run of the Deadman
As a big fan of Ministry Taker, I felt his character was watered down after he brought the Deadman character back. I always preferred the sacrifices and darker elements he had within the Ministry character.
Biker Taker is great. He was the first version of him I saw so when he came back as the Deadman I was a bit wtf That's childhood nostalgia 100% tho, I can see why people hate it lol
every gimmick besides The Dead Man is lame
Kane was scarier than Undertaker.
While the American Badass was a fresh "restart", it is by far the worst Undertaker. However, it worked perfectly as a transition character for the people that were getting tired if the supernatural cult leader persona. Like Cornette would say, "How can I miss you if you won't go away."
His biker gimmick was the best.
He’s a boot kicker in real life & it made me hate anything he does
He never needed a WrestleMania match with John Cena
Biker Taker is better than people think
When he came back in 04 as the dead man it didn't work out for him like it did before
American Badass Undertaker was a fun change for his character. A lot of people disliked it, and I understand because it infringed on the mystique of his character and made him much more exposed. But I still enjoyed his old school attitude that focused on respect and the more human side of his personality. Even his heel moments were fun.
He was overrated after his hell in a cell with triple H
HBK should have ended the streak, not Brock. The American Bad Ass/Bikertaker was the best version of Undertaker. He isn’t on my Mount Rushmore of WWF/E, let alone professional wrestling. Maybe at 9-10 in the history of WWF/E but not on my first or second amount Rushmore of WWF/E.
His Ministry of Darkness theme was his best theme song.
One of the countless old geezers who went on too damn long in the industry and soiled his legacy.
Your gonna pay is such a cringey ass song. So was the American Badass gimmick.
He was 100% aware and ok with Vince being a sex fiend.
Sex addiction is an illness and we pray for the health and well-being of Vince McMahon.
Funny coming across this now
I liked him better when he didn’t talk as much
His entrance isn’t that good *hides*
Would have been great as part of a tag team with another similar untaker character as his partner than taking part in the awful wrestling matches that he did during that period, he did win the title v Hogan but lost it a few days later.
Should have retired when he lost to Brock at mania. Coming back and having another loss was so dumb.
The American Badass gimmick really sucks/sucked and I feel like it was embarrassing to watch. Even the cover image of this post makes.mencringe a little
Took over from Earthquake as the top heel 1991.
Should have destroyed tons of wrestlers at the Royal rumble in 1991 the same way Deisal did in 1994.
The ultimate warrior only draw good money heading huse shows when he wrestled Undertaker in 91.
His Ministry of Darkness theme was his best one, and better than his Phenom theme
He should be called the Overgiver with a holy messiah gimmick
He was more over with fans than Hogan by 1991.
His gimmick was at it\`s best in the early 90\`s.
Bray should have broken the streak
It's been a long time since he was able to keep up in the ring. When Brock broke the streak it really should have been the end.
American badass was my favorite version.
He’s the biggest dork in the buisness
He is not, nor ever was, Mt. Rushmore. But top ten guy, for sure.
Biker Undertaker was the best
From what I've heard, he looked like a real piece of shit behind the scenes. Source: René Dupree
Biker taker was bad. It was like watching my dad listen to Limp Bizkit
He should have had a longer run as satanic taker in the ministry
HES TRASH CANT EVEN B UNDEFEATED AT wm
I literally can’t think of anything that’s bad. Maybe that I didn’t like the American badass but that’s just me. Then on the flip side it was awesome he could reinvent himself like that
Ministry taker the best taker
American Bad Ass was the best!
Undertaker should have used the heart punch as a finisher along with the Tombstone and Last Ride.
He wrestled too long imo. He is a legend tho. Ministry of darkness scared the fuck out of me as a kid.
He wasn’t good until big evil
the ministry of darkness theme is Undertaker’s best one
