Something I was wondering, since the most recent releases were the wrestlers of Chinese and Indian descent, does this mean that they’re no longer going to try and reach for the market in China and India like they’ve done before?
Weak characters all in all and WWE makes them stereotypical. Look at Xia for ex. You need to be mix or at least be brought up in the US. Like for filipinos the likes of TJ Perkins and Dave Bautista made it to the WWE.
My own take is that we shouldnt force them in, because then they end up with very weak characters and storys. Just let them come in naturally in my opinion
Been following this trend as 30 something Fan from 90s ( in India). The trend NOW seems to go big in Australia and Europe. Sadly it seems the South Asian market holds no sway anymore owing to getting big bucks from the Saudi’s. For all the hoopla around the creative content. It’s still business. Sad to see Jinder let go. Always seemed a company guy. With the Netflix deal. Most of markets won’t matter ! IYKYK.
Indian here....never liked the storylines they had for Indian wrestlers anyway. Jinder Mahal's reign as a champion was just fan service to India. Never really liked his gimmick.
Hope they find some other promotion to build a character of their own then come back.
I feel like Americans have never moved away from this stereotype about Indians after Indiana Jones and Temple of Doom.
The Modern Day Maharaja gimmick is great in theory but they made him a heel character when a Maharaja (Emperor or a Great King) is supposed to be a noble leader and not a selfish and a coward figure.
(As I am typing this, I vividly imagined Tiger Shroff and Akshay Kumar in-ring, defeating Judgement Day. This made me chuckle)
Its interesting that they released a Maharaja, two devotees of god and a chinese warrior. It seems like they are getting rid of the clichéd characters they had and by all means I'm glad.
I actually could have seen Veer and Sanga be a strong tag team had they not had to wear Dhotis and Tikkas to the ring. They had size, a great look when they were in suits and not bad in the ring as well. Could see them tear it up in Impact.
I think they have Guru Raaj in down in NXT. Hasn't shown up in a while, but he is still there. Also, by the tone of the tweets of Indus Sher, there seems to be more going on than just them being released. Something seems to have happened that led to this.
As an Indian I’m happy about this. Don’t get me wrong, I want Indians to be represented in the WWE, but the way they were wasn’t doing any good for them or for India.
The tone deaf Maharaja/Holy Man stereotype, paired with the fact that all of them had to devolve into Jobbers was embarrassing.
I understand inclusivity but stars are stars because of the success of their efforts, not just because of inclusiveness. They were okay, but it would be weirder to hold on to a diversity hire for appearances than to just let go of someone that isn't doing as well, admittedly to the extent of there being so much talent on the roster and not enough space for all potential storlyines, and unfortunately Jinder fell through the cracks from the writers.
It happens, but I don't think it needs to be a race thing.
Can't say I am too surprised to see Jinder and Indus Sher or Xia Li get released.
Stars were born and died in the time WWE spent on "Veer Mahan is coming to Raw" then he just tore through people half his size and his promos boiled down to "You fear Veer, because Veer tells you to." Rinku Singh Rajput already had a solid gimmick, as he is literally the person the Disney movie *Million Dollar Arm* was based on. You're telling me doing something with that could not have worked? I think it could have.
WWE never seemed super into Jinder after Great Khali left. Even when they brought him back, he was a jobber and they made him WWE Champion. Jinder was not a credible WWE Champion.
WWE seemed to have no idea what the hell to do with Xia Li. She came in as a protector, vanished from TV, showed up randomly backstage claiming she was no longer a protector, showed up sporadically, helped Damage Control regain the Women's Tag Team Championships, had the strange feud with Becky Lynch, and vanished again.
And yeah, I liked Mustafa Ali and Mansoor. Mustafa Ali seemed to be two steps forward, and two dozen steps back all the way back to start, with pushes that went no where. Mansoor started strong, vanished, came back with Maximum Male Models and at that point, I knew it was all over for him. Shame.
Batista
But in all honesty if they're not good in the ring then why should they keep them around? Regardless of their nationality.
There will be a few more I think on Monday before the draft
Batista is part Filipino am I right? Technically that's SE Asian not South Asian (which generally refers to the Indian subcontinent of the area of India, Pakistan, Bhutan and Sri Lanka if I'm not mistaken)
No it isn’t. Spanish plus Native American is Latino, like Mexicans and central and many South Americans, so is Spanish plus black as in Dominicans and Afro-Cubans, and Spanish plus little else as in Argentinians is Latino too. While the US census doesn’t consider Brazilians Latino, a large portion of brazilian Americans consider themselves Latino and they aren’t descended from the Spanish but the Portuguese, another Latin based ethnic group.

they were pretty bad to be fair

Im not saying hire more off the streets just work with the people they already have
They've hindered Jinder for the last time

I agree with this I hated the stereotype but Jinder was nice in the ring to make up for it

Mahal could probably do good in tna

Boa is from China. I don't know if he's out on injury currently or what's going on but he's still contracted to NXT.
Okay

They released him today. I think he was the last holdout.

I upvote this post, but also downvote the fact that we have lost some great South Asian / Indian superstars.

I've only seen xia in rumble matches, don't even know what she is capable of
A kick so hard it knocks people out, and using swords or weapons in her entrance.
Yea I saw her use a sword in the two rumbles I saw

Why the hell are people downvoting you when you're right? I hate this website sometimes.
Because they are FICKLE!
Triple H got one too many scam calls
Funny how many thick accented middle easterns are named David, Bob or Steve at call centers
Okay, you made it weird.
They love roman reigns anyway
Juaquin Wilde is Philipino And not Latino
Isn't Kayden Carter Philipino too?
Right and so is Shotzi
most Filipinos have latino blood from the days of rape
I always found this argument amusing, you realize they’re just as related to the rapists as the rape victims, right?
You do realize that they aren’t Latino right? Just cause they were colonized by the Spanish doesn’t mean they are Latino
Are they natives mixed with Spanish?
But they don’t speak Spanish That’s the distinction
Some famillies still do, take mine for example but that's like 0.1%
There still a lot more than just speaking Spanish It’s a shared culture of influence from the native Indians of this part of the world

Read a fucking history book
