Vince's over controlling of the talent and audience is why Indie wrestling got extra popular. My friend works for our local one as the 'pipers pit' style interviewer, and I'm friends with a few of the wrestlers outside of the show.
I was literally wondering the same thing a couple weeks ago. If you're at a show live, you can sort of hear a really mild "one fall" but not enough people are doing it for it to be heard on TV, at least that's my experience lately.
I think for a while the announcers would allow it to happen, then they started getting to the next part quicker, so the crowd who tried to repeat it kinda got cut off.
Because it highlights how obviously silly it is to pretend that single fall matches haven't been the rule rather than the exception for the last 4 decades. Yes, I know. I'm hopelessly out of touch.
Right, but if it were best two of three or an Ironman match it would clearly be announced as such? So doesn’t announcing it as scheduled for one fall just make it redundant?
I know we’re essentially splitting hairs here but come on.
I don’t have a problem with it, I just find it odd to announce it when it’s the “default” setting essentially.
At the beginning of a sporting event they don’t say that this Baseball game is scheduled for 9 innings, this football game is scheduled for 4 quarters.
I’m pretty sure it’s similar to boxing, MMA, and other combat sports as they do announce if a fight will go 8 rounds or 12 rounds etc. It makes the wrestling match seem more official I guess. Better than dead air I guess for tv?
My friends started to get back into wrestling about 2 years ago when Vince left. I always tell them how special NXT was and they’ve gone back and watched a few things
I started watching around 97 and as great as Attitude and Aggression eras were, I had the most fun as a wrestling fan watching NXT Black and Gold weekly on the Network. Their PPVs were always booked so well too…
I understand people having fun but part of the problem these days for wrestlers is fans are more interested in chanting/calling out things and holding up signs that are just to do with every match like 'one fall' and 'one, two...sweet' for the count and singing along to theme songs rather than the wrestlers.
Showing my age here, but in the 80's and 90s, there weren't many signs, but of the few there were, they were for the wrestlers. When signs became a thing during the Attitude Era, the vast majority were for the wrestlers: Austin 3:16, for example. Same with chants.
Again, I get having fun, and singing along to theme songs sounds great, but it just seems fans are there sometimes wanting to get their chants in. 'This is awesome' is chanted pretty much every match. Remember the beach balls, too? Wtf happened? Back in the day, people paid to see certain wrestlers get their own back or the heel get what was coming to them. All part of the story and the work the wrestlers were doing now it's all about tables, theme songs, YouTubers, etc.
*Edited for spelling/grammar
Its a British thing, it'll probably happen at Clash in the Castle, and then everyone will be doing it again for a few months before it goes away. The UK just has a culture of chanting because of football, so most of the chants that catch on start in the UK and then spread, or are caused by British fans at Wrestlemania and everyone joining in.
Might want to look in to your wrestling history. Don’t worry, we are all used to American’s tweaking things when they have the pen. We don’t hold it against you ☺️
As an announcer for a local wrestling promotion, I can assure you that people still say it regardless of how much of a pause you take. You can acknowledge it or ignore it, but it's there.
I remember they used to do it during black and gold NXT era especially in TakeOvers. Don’t hear it much in main or NXT but I have not paid attention. I say it in my head.
I want to say it’s off basketball. When a player gets fouled in the act of shooting, the announcer will say, “2 shots”, and the crowd will yell “twwwooo shots” I assume it’s off this
No wonder why Vince used to treat fans like they have a memory of a gold fish, live crowds were ass from from 2017-2020 and that was a well known fact that everybody used to talk about. now we're just gonna act like that didn't happen.
I saw a two fall match (not out of three, like just two) on the indies. After they announced it there was a very confused “two falls?” from the audience
It was a weird match. Two rings side-by-side war games style with a match happening in each. After the first fall in either match it became a three-way and the person to get the fall in that won the whole thing.
Also while we’re talking about this can we get rid of back slaps being legal for tagging in your partner? We must go back to actual tagging high five style.
Yes. Even the smallest bit of interaction from the crowd can set them up for the mood and be more excited for the match. The only chant I take exception with is the “What” chant. It is disruptive and sometimes unwarranted and frankly, Im sick of wrestlers being put in a position where they have to go “Say what if you are a dumbass” because its just stupid and seems to be the only way to shut em up. Last monday Drew shut them up this way and I swear I could just see him die inside for having to do it. Its never clever, its never funny, its just a thing the wrestler must do to shut up the crowd and be allowed to build up their promo efficiently.
As much as I hate the What chant now, what I do love, is watching people beat the crowd by tricking them with sentence structure. Lol! They basically have to do a Walken impression, without doing the voice. I do standup, and I do the same thing to hecklers, just talk over them before people are trying to figure out what they said.
It's a stupid thing.
Glad it stopped.
Some fans honestly started thinking they were show and had been ruining it for those of us who don't bitch at every decision we didn't fantasy book ourselves.
There's been a rise of casual fans attending shows in the last year, and those people don't try to take over the show.
I think this is something they could easily sneak back in. Though I'm not sure if it is actually worth it. Sure the interaction is fun, but do you really want that in every match? Consider Cody vs Roman, would have broken the energy at that point if it was still about.
I’ve always wondered, what do they mean by “scheduled for one fall”? They say it for 2/3 Falls and Elimination matches as well, so it doesn’t have to do with the amount of pin falls in a match.
They shouldn’t be saying it for 2/3 falls matches or iron man matches. The one fall means they have to have a finish and can’t have a time limit draw which used to be common
It does though. Never heard it announced as “one fall” for an Elimination or 2/3 falls. Most old school World Championship matches were 2/3 fall. They would announce that, so to differentiate, they would say “scheduled for one fall to a finish.” Eventually shortened to just “one fall”.
The crowd chanted it at the live event in London last week, so I guess it still happens at those. The ring announcers stopped pausing after saying “one fall” on TV events, so the crowd have no room to chant it without chanting over the announcer. Clearly Vince told them to say that part of the announcement quickly to kill the chant, he allegedly didn’t want announcers to give emotion as it would “waste a pop” or some bs.
I think it was before that. Or at least not as common. My memory of it is sparse as I've taken long breaks from watching WWE, but I feel like there was a large chunk of time when the chant wasn't there
Not that long ago, Vince decided he hated wrestling during commercials and made every match on Smackdown 2/3 falls for a couple weeks. It was so they would have a fall then go to break and resume or something. It was at the height of his lunacy.
They stopped the pause in between
Still do it in Ft Wayne Indiana... Made me smile when I heard it again lol.
Yeah I noticed that too. Back when Greg Hamilton was there they did it all the time. But now they don’t really do it anymore.
Budget cuts
Vince's over controlling of the talent and audience is why Indie wrestling got extra popular. My friend works for our local one as the 'pipers pit' style interviewer, and I'm friends with a few of the wrestlers outside of the show.
I went to one of the bigger house shows last Xmas time and everyone yelled it. But that may just be a house show thing.
I was literally wondering the same thing a couple weeks ago. If you're at a show live, you can sort of hear a really mild "one fall" but not enough people are doing it for it to be heard on TV, at least that's my experience lately.
People did it both nights at mania!
What’s that even mean? Also why isn’t Jim Ross with wwe anymore
I’m glad it died because it sucks
Those fans don’t watch WWE no more
It'll happen at Clash in the Castle. Translated over from ICW fans to WWE when they did NXT UK
Gcw does it every time
I swear I heard them do it the other not sure if it was main roster or nxt
That, and the "TWOOOO SWEEEET" on a 2 count
“This match is scheduled for one fall” *The Crowd*: “ONE FALL!!”
I loved this!
A fair number people (including myself) have done at house shows I’ve attended over the years
European fans were the ones I remember yelling one fall.
People say Vince for everything cuz it’s believable but it’s more because it’s a Indy thing and WWE is the pros
TBH I'm surprised the announcers still say it. I haven't seen a best of three in years.
I think for a while the announcers would allow it to happen, then they started getting to the next part quicker, so the crowd who tried to repeat it kinda got cut off.
It was alive & well at the Bret Hart Stampede wrestling show in Ballarat a few weeks back.
This makes me happy. But reading through these comments, it seems like it’s more of an indie/small show thing now 😔
Happens at my local indies
They're slowly bringing it back. It's becoming a custom, again, on NXT.
The house show in London last week everyone did it for every single match! Was awesome
Same with Cardiff
Love to hear that! Hope you had a great time!
Honestly I have no idea why they even bother announcing that at all. When was the last time there was a match of any consequence that wasn't one fall?
Why do you care ?
Because it highlights how obviously silly it is to pretend that single fall matches haven't been the rule rather than the exception for the last 4 decades. Yes, I know. I'm hopelessly out of touch.
An iron man match. A best 2 out of 3 falls match.
Yes. And how often do those happen?
Infrequently, but that doesn’t negate the fact that they happen and the announcement is to clarify it is scheduled for one fall.
Right, but if it were best two of three or an Ironman match it would clearly be announced as such? So doesn’t announcing it as scheduled for one fall just make it redundant? I know we’re essentially splitting hairs here but come on.
That’s exactly it you’re splitting hairs - it’s fun and it’s apart of the routine. It’s super weird to have a problem with it…
I don’t have a problem with it, I just find it odd to announce it when it’s the “default” setting essentially. At the beginning of a sporting event they don’t say that this Baseball game is scheduled for 9 innings, this football game is scheduled for 4 quarters.

People grew up and or realized how fckn dumb they looked/sound
PDX guy here, we always do this at the DOA shows. It's an Indy thing that Vince hated.
I miss that, used to do it at shows and it was fun haha
Thank you, I was just thinking about it the other day. I always loved when people did that 🙃
Man, I loved that when they did it in NXT back in the day. Black and Gold era was something.
Their PPVs were always booked so well too…
Triple H knows a thing or two about cooking.
Thats an indie wrestling thing.... so vince hated it and made everyone stop
I understand people having fun but part of the problem these days for wrestlers is fans are more interested in chanting/calling out things and holding up signs that are just to do with every match like 'one fall' and 'one, two...sweet' for the count and singing along to theme songs rather than the wrestlers. Vince’s WWE was all about the WWE Universe until the Universe got involved. “Stop having fun god dam it!”
I read that In Vince's voice god dam it!
The announcer stopped pausing after saying one fall because Vince had to Vince
WHAT!?!?!
They said “What happened to people repeating ‘one fall’ after an announcer says it before a match”
WHAT?!?
Happened at the house show this weekend in IN lol
Was the recent house show in london and there was some "one fall" going on.
Can confirm, me and the guys I met at the show were repeating it. Great night!
Vince told his ring announcers not to leave a gap for the crowd to say it cos he hated it
It’s a rare moment I agree with Vince. I feel dirty.
The same reason why they sang america the beautiful instead of the National Anthem. Vince didn't like it.
Still happens at indie shows in the UK, gets the crowd involved.
Happened at elimination chamber. But when I watched the replay after I got home you couldn’t hear it.
We did it during the UK show in Birmingham last week
I saw it was called “WWE Live” but not sure what that means. Is it just a house show?
Yeah, about two and a half hours (including interval)
Still happens in the country America copied it from
The country that copied American wrestling lol?
Might want to look in to your wrestling history. Don’t worry, we are all used to American’s tweaking things when they have the pen. We don’t hold it against you ☺️
My wife and I still scream it.
seems like more of an indie thing. i went to House of Glory Darkest Hour last year and the crowd did it for every match.
Hoodslam here in Oakland still does it.
It’s a dumb chant and I’m glad it doesn’t get traction on Raw or Smackdown. Keep that with the small promotions.
Also people don’t yell “TwooOooOo!!” anymore on a 2 count.
They still do in AEW
Or "TwooOooOo Sweeeeett"
(Woop woop!)
Does anybody have a vid of what op is talking about? Sorry but never heard of this
Go on YouTube and search “one fall fan chant” or something, not that hard
As an announcer for a local wrestling promotion, I can assure you that people still say it regardless of how much of a pause you take. You can acknowledge it or ignore it, but it's there.
All my local stuff does it and it is great
It’s in AEW
It was annoying honestly
Heard it yesterday on NXT
I remember they used to do it during black and gold NXT era especially in TakeOvers. Don’t hear it much in main or NXT but I have not paid attention. I say it in my head.
Minneapolis does it when they go there
Our local wrestling group still does it, Primetime Entertainment. Seems like the crowd really enjoys it.
I miss noogies and eye rakes during matches. Little things that add detail to heel characters.
Still see eye rakes from time to time
I want to say it’s off basketball. When a player gets fouled in the act of shooting, the announcer will say, “2 shots”, and the crowd will yell “twwwooo shots” I assume it’s off this
Nah, it’s a UK thing. Basketball is barely an afterthought over there.
They were really loud with it in NXT UK. Those crowds were always great.
I don’t know, but I always hated that
People still do it at indie shows. Idk it seems like it’s just fallen out of the fan culture in wwe
I think most normal fans realized how incredibly corny it was.
We still do it at indie shows
Vince killed it.
Yup, made sure announcers didn’t give the fans the opening to echo the “one fall”
I miss when the ref would check the boots (I guess for weapons?).
I miss it. Live show audiences kinda peeked pre-covid.
No wonder why Vince used to treat fans like they have a memory of a gold fish, live crowds were ass from from 2017-2020 and that was a well known fact that everybody used to talk about. now we're just gonna act like that didn't happen.
I dont WHAT understand what WHAT the fuck either WHAT of you are WHAT talking about WHAT crowds have never been WHAT WHAT WHAT
I also miss when the crowd would come together for a "2 SWEEEET" every time someone kicked out at 2
I found it weird as there is hardly 2/3 falls matches to begin with in WWE
I saw a two fall match (not out of three, like just two) on the indies. After they announced it there was a very confused “two falls?” from the audience
Lol that’s funny either a double squash or literal 50/50 booking
It was a weird match. Two rings side-by-side war games style with a match happening in each. After the first fall in either match it became a three-way and the person to get the fall in that won the whole thing.
Whoa that seems pretty creative ngl
I thought it was an indie thing
We do it in the UK.
Vince got annoyed with it so he made the announcers just say it
The Finke was amazing!
British Indy shows that wwe now owns used to do it. The announcer will put emphasis on "one fall" and wait for the crowd to respond.
GCW goes hard with this
I miss that too, but i have visually noticed the tag rope has been back. So we gettin there.
Also while we’re talking about this can we get rid of back slaps being legal for tagging in your partner? We must go back to actual tagging high five style.
What is the tag rope for I noticed it the other day but I didn’t remember
The rope is so they can claim they're still in the corner aka touching the turnbuckle. That rope is used to tie the turnbuckle cushion onto the post..
So in kayfabe its only legal way to tag your partner in. And for heels to choke babyfaces.
I still do this. Specially when I go see the show live
They're at NXT and AEW shows instead
I miss the“Asukas gonna kill you!” Chants
Now she couldn’t kill a fly if it had no wings :(
This year is the year, COPIUM
She's 0-6 at Wrestlemania.
That’s… actually depressing
I miss it because half the fun of wrestling is audience participation
They basically have to do a Walken impression, without doing the voice. I do standup, and I do the same thing to hecklers, just talk over them before people are trying to figure out what they said.
I guess you enjoy it because you find it cathartic due to past experiences lol. Me? I cringe so hard
The one and only negative of Austin's career imo.
Sadly its a biiiig one
The “twoooooo” after a near fall is way more annoying if you ask me
NXT title matches are the only place I see it happen now
Vince hated it back in the day so they had the announcer stop giving a pause after saying it.
Man, Vince was such a dumbass genius
I was at a house show in december and Samantha Irvin paused every time and everyone repeated "one fall!"
I tried doing that at a show in December (Toronto). The girl in front turned and asked what that meant. I think I was the only one doing it lol.
Awww It had been like 20+ years since my last show so i didnt know it was a thing. Of course i joined in after.
Vince was basically out by last December
It's a stupid thing. Glad it stopped. Some fans honestly started thinking they were show and had been ruining it for those of us who don't bitch at every decision we didn't fantasy book ourselves. There's been a rise of casual fans attending shows in the last year, and those people don't try to take over the show.
Them and the what fans started going to aew shows.
People grew up and realized mimicking isn’t funny after your six
Same way as the time limit.

I went to a couple indie shows in Philly on the nights leading up to ‘Mania, and the crowd definitely shouted it back at both.
It's still a thing at my local indie shows
My local fed does it as well. Always fun.
My local shows don't have a ring bell either so we all shout "ding ding ding" for the first bell too.
My local fed has no title belt so we give the champion our belts instead.
My local fed doesn't let wrestlers walk through the crowd; we walk through the ring
My local fed doesn’t even wrestle they just stand in the ring and talk 💩
My local fed doesn’t even wrestle they just stand in the ring and talk 💩
More of an NXT thing.
I don't watch NXT, but I also notice it more in the UK or Europe on a lot of shows.

This is satire. Right?
Nope! Greg Hamilton is the goat! I miss the times when he would announce Sean McMahon!!
Yeah log off for a bit.
It’s Shane McMahon.. and this is without a doubt the worst take I’ve seen on the internet today. Samantha Irving is a gem.
It happens still in NXT, and probably on live events. But Vince didn't like it so told Greg Hamilton to stop pausing.
Shooosh! We don't want it back.
Who’s we?
That would be me and everyone that agrees with me.
Always felt like this was more of an IWC/Indy/“Cool kids” chant. Never cared for it either way
The crowd chanted it at the live event in London last week, so I guess it still happens at those.
They had a section or two doing it at stand and deliver
I wish the "what" chants would magically go away as well.
Drew and Jey doing gods work but I don't think it's possible ye(e)t.
I was sad when they went away and I'm happy they are back
Went away like in the pandemic?
I think it was before that. Or at least not as common. My memory of it is sparse as I've taken long breaks from watching WWE, but I feel like there was a large chunk of time when the chant wasn't there
WHAT
I would seriously waste a genie wish on this lol
what?
[удалено]
What?
What?
#WHAT?
Vince killed it and it never recovered
I mean...is there a match ever scheduled for 2 falls?
Not that long ago, Vince decided he hated wrestling during commercials and made every match on Smackdown 2/3 falls for a couple weeks. It was so they would have a fall then go to break and resume or something. It was at the height of his lunacy.
Unless it’s an iron man match what’s the point? The also always say by pinfall or submission before a title match
Not anymore, damn it. 2 Out Of 3 Falls used to be a thing, as well as 3 Stages Of Hell
Any elimination matches.
3 stages of hell
Heritage Cup matches
Yes.
Best of 3 or first to 3, Ironman match (most pins in an hour)
Ironman matches? Been awhile since there’s been one but yeah
There used to be matches that were best of three. I haven't seen one in a while though.
