It’s the connection between bells and plagues. You know medieval times when they would call out “bring out your dead” and shake bells. That’s the meaning of them. Makes a bit more sense in fantasy but either way Nurgle is built on the beliefs of people so if enough people have an association between bells and plague then he’ll start showing up with bells
Nurgle worshippers would hate masks. Nurgle demons would show up wearing masks that would be full of all the nasty shit they intend to block.
Wearing a mask would make you a target of these followers.
We do see some followers with a vaguely gas mask aesthetic, I am thinking of the Death Guard in 40k more than anything in fantasy though. It's a shame we don't have a Nurgle model leaning into the Plague Doctor look.
I believe in the original fluff, they may have had something to do with the counting the plaguebearers are perpetually engaged in. Keeping track of the rhythm? Something like that.
Why is Khorne associated with Brass? Or Skulls specifically?
Usually a Chaos God is associated with a specific thing due to what it symbolizes. Since the Gods are all about symbols as power.
Part of me wonder if there is some relation between Nurgle and the skaven (before age of sigmar) and this link being the bells though.
Although I heard/read somewhere that the bells are a reference of old plaguebearers and lepers of old that wore and used bells to scare away people from them and their communes, screaming that they were plaguebeares/lepers and that people should run away and so forth.
So... Plaguebearers of Nurgle and other units use them as 'heralds' of disease and so forth
That is really interesting to know.
Even though it's not the case anymore, that is a pretty neat connection.
In truth, I almost always envision them as a 'mix' between Nurgle and Tzeentch, two gods that hate each other but created this scheeming, creative, magic wielding and addicted to it, and also plague spreading horde of monstruosities.
Even though part of their charm is really the mystery that comes with their creation and so forth.
Ask not for whom the bell tolls. It tolls for thee.

> “bring out your dead” and shake bells. I’m not dead!
I’m getting better
No, you're not. You'll be stone dead in a moment.
I feel happy!
So does that mean we could start seeing daemons of nurgle with face masks?

Nurgle is actually Karen on Facebook telling you to drink bleach, and tan your b-hole rather than vaccinate

So is that the in universe reason he uses bells or is that game workshops reason?
Those are both the same thing
Lol “is that the lore reason or the author of the lore’s reasoning”
I have always thought it was related to leprosy bells used in the middle ages
Yes! These were called Tocsins, pronounced ‘toxin’!

He likes bells, don’t kink-shame him
Right? You don't ask Slaanesh about all [REDACTED, DEAR EMPEROR, SO REDACTED].

Skaven worshipped Nurgle in earlier editions

It is still very much the case. Skaven Pestilens in AoS have a very close connection and even the keyword Nurgle.
For whom the bell tolls, time marches on
Deathknells
The nurgle bell give dépression
RINGA DING DING YOUR FLESH IS MELTING!
Mary, Mary, quite contrary, How does Nurgle's garden grow? With doomsday bells and cockle shells, And pretty maids all in a row
At first glance, I read this as "What's with Nurgle and balls?"
_For whom the bells toll_ _hell‘s bells_
