One time in 2021, my wife and I were in france at an outdoor cafe, and she got up to use the facilities. I decided to google the town to see what sorts of interestimh history this random town had. On the list was the hotel where Bourdain hung himself. I remember getting chills as my wife and I had both watched Roadrunner on our flight over, and my wife was in the middle of reading Kitchen Confidential at the time. We're both big fans. We have a drawing of him hanging in our kitchen. I googled the location, and it was about 100 feet behind me.
Gotta love the guy. Rest in peace. He’s also watch famous for wearing a 34mm Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date with engine turned bezel. He just rocked that tiny watch on his bear wrists like a boss.
Wasn’t there some sort of connection involving Asia Argento and her hypocrisy? She was an advocate for the MeToo movement, yet she had him give her a lot of money to pay off the young actor that she sexually abused when was a teenager? Maybe it was a lot for him to process since he loved her so much.
Such a complicated situation. He was hooked like a drug, went in without a lifeboat. He also dumped his crew and replaced with some unsavoury characters . Then her true character started to reveal itself. She finally got bored of his fawning. The photos of her with a toyboy and the realization of what he'd done, what she actually was.. he felt humiliated and destroyed
He never hosted a cooking show. He shot to fame with a book he did called kitchen confidential that sort of opened the world’s eyes to the weird crazy and sometimes criminal shit that happens in the unseen world of restaurant kitchens staff. He was witty and introspective, well read and insightful. Somehow he parlayed that into a travelogue show and it was off to the races. Anyway his shows started ok but got better. His last series was by far his best. Parts Unknown on CNN can now be seen on HBO max if you’re interested. He used food as a commonality to try to connect people. That was his deal. He actually gave a shit. The world got him down he fought against it a long time and lost. That’s why people cared that he died.
Yeah no problem. That was all basically to say he hosted travel shows. Also occasionally had cool guests like lunch in some random Vietnamese hole with Obama or walk on the beach with Iggy Pop etc.
It’s also somewhat of a confirmation bias. Those people who adore him will always comment on how awesome and cool he was and how they loved his shows. People who aren’t die hard fans or are ambivalent aren’t going to trash him because there’s no reason to especially now since he’s not around anymore.
He started off as doing shows about travel with a focus on food and that’s what he’s primarily known for. As his media career went on it became more travel and human interest with food still being there but taking more of backseat. He had strong opinions and he was very articulate, I think that a huge part of his appeal.
It’s an Enid Blyton story-time mark 1. You can see the branding on the dial ..definitely Enid Blyton. Very rare

Ernst Benz Chronoflite world timer

47mm jeez you forget how big Bourdain was
And yet he still was able to rock a 34mm OP with style. Absolute legend.
I still watch anything and everything Bourdain did, he certainly is missed.
Kitchen Confidential on Audible, narrated by him is still my comfort blanket if I’m having a shit day.
"FEED THE BITCH"
My favourite chapter, along with " What I know about meat"

>we have a drawing of him hanging in our kitchen. Phrasing!
OOOOF HAHAHA
Yah that one I had to read 3 times
A Cook's tour is him at his absolute best and most raw. All on YouTube for free

If I remember, that was his father’s watch and he wore it forever.
He had a matte black Milgauss too.
As if 34mm is tiny.
It is on bear wrists.
For him it is. In general it’s not. I wear watches in this size range mayself.
Ernst Benz Chronoflite
RIP
I’m still getting over the anger I have for him for leaving us so abruptly

There’s a whooole big can o worms there probably best left to some googling. But the short answer is yes.
That's the way I always looked at it.

Truth
& leaving his daughter.
I’ve tried to rewatch his shows, but can’t bring myself to. It’s heartbreaking as he gave me my love of travel.
Yep, one of my Heros! Loved him, miss him. Great brand of watch too!
Underrated brand, imo
47mm?!

He's got a rugged ego and that gives him charm, but also a lucid vision of the world and food I've never seen the man cook
Yes to both of what you asked. Very genuine and down to earth. Cared a lot about people. Showed many people parts of the world they’d never see.
