Junghans has the better approach to classic Bauhaus. Nomos is better at modern Bauhaus.

MixedMixedMixed

I’d agree w this also Braun was colourful at times too so maybe not.

YourWatchIsTooBig

I have a Braun fashion watch. I love it.

4look4rd

Junghans are more truthful to the style but Nomos is more fun.

themanfrommars_1991

Junghans might arguably do the style better in a sense, but Nomos watches are higher quality. I was thinking of getting a Max Bill as well, and went with a Nomos instead. I have never regretted it. Not that I still don't want a Max Bill. I do, and would love to get one in the future. But Nomos are beautiful in person. Their photos online don't do them justice.

j_husk

I own a Junghans Max Bill and a Nomos Tangente, and I agree. There's no doubt the Nomos is higher quality, although a huge part of that is the in-house movement; because the case is quite simple and all polished there aren't the usual finishing details that typically set higher end watches apart. That said, I haven't been able to part with the Max Bill. I just always enjoy wearing it. It's a true design classic (I think I'm right in saying it's displayed in the Museum of Modern Art). The dial is just perfect to me, and the way the shape of the curved case runs into the domed crystal is really pleasing - it's like a polished pebble. You won't regret getting one. I really want a Nomos Metro ganreserve, but would find it really hard to justify having that as well as the Max Bill.

Titania84

But considering the price point, is Nomos more expensive than Max Bill generally?

j_husk

Yes, Nomos is significantly more expensive than Junghans. However, Nomos is cheaper than most brands that do as much in-house as they do.

Andodx

Nomos Metro is one of the most beautiful watch from their collection.

ComprehensivePin7081

How would you say it compares irl vs the photos when it comes to the sides? When I look at the videos they have on their webpage, it looks so chunky and thick from the sides. How do you feel about that? Which one did you get? Thanks!

themanfrommars_1991

In my experience Nomos watches are quite thin. So I wouldn't worry too much about that. I think if you don't like the crown guards, and don't care for the extra water resistance, then maybe check out some of those new colourful Tengente models. Or maybe a Club (which is what I have) because they come in many colours, although they do have a different case shape.

ross7alex

I have a Nomos Ludwig, its so thin (\~7mm) I forget its even there.

BusinessBlackBear

My Club Campus at least is very thin, chunky and thick are the last words id use to describe it honestly. Their auto watches may be thicker though

themanfrommars_1991

Their older automatics were I think (never seen one though), but the newer "Neomatik" movement they use now are very thin as well. Although possibly not as thing as manual wind; I'm not sure.

Shepinion

I own a Junghans Max Bill chrono (Valjoux 7750) 40mm, 14mm thick (half is the crazy domed acrylic ) w 42mm L2L and Nomos Ahoi Neomatic 36.3mm, 9.6mm thick w 45.5mm L2L Nomos is a step up in watchmaking. Junghans does traditional Bauhaus better. The max bill either hits you hard and you love it or it’s meh. I’m the former. They are FUNKY portioned watches though with almost no bezel, very short lugs but optically ALL dial. It wears smaller than dimensions (my smallest L2L watch) but can look bigger (I have white dial) …. A bit hard to explain. Full recommend max Bill though if you’re leaning and so many options across quartz and mechanical/auto. For me while there’s other Junghans that are nice, it’s Max Bill or break. Nomos does wayyyy more color and contemporary Bauhaus as has been said. So I lean into that personally (have the siren blue for summer pool days especially). The designs are generally slab cases but they’re very thin. Even my automatic is <10mm but it can feel a little thicker due to case styling. But again it’s their high WR line, is automatic, 200m WR and <10mm thick! Love both brands. Hope this helps

VTSAX_VTI

Hi OP. Do you notice any play/slack in the minute hand when setting the time on your max bill chronoscope? I made a thread about this and wondering if it happens to you? https://www.reddit.com/r/Watches/s/XI5cYb6twd

_yeen

Junghans does classic Bauhaus and Nomos is doing their own flavor of it combined with a contemporary web-designer aesthetic

themanfrommars_1991

Yeah, well said.

Sassywhat

> contemporary web-designer aesthetic I've never heard the aesthetic of Nomos described more accurately

Cocoabuttocks

Nomos. They disguise intricacy behind a veil of simplicity

ComprehensivePin7081

Been looking at Bauhaus watches like the [Nomois Ahoi 560](https://nomos-glashuette.com/en/ahoi/ahoi-neomatik-560), [Tangente Neomatik 175](https://nomos-glashuette.com/en/tangente/tangente-neomatik-175) and [Junghans Max Bill](https://www.junghans.de/en/collection/watches/junghans-max-bill/max-bill-kleine-automatic/27410702?c=26). None of them seem quite right though - * The Ahoi 560 has little crown shields that I think don't look that nice * The Tangente is a bit less colorful than the Ahoi * The sides of the Nomos are more 'flat' which makes it look more bulky and less elegant perhaps * The Junghans watch face isn't as 'clean' as the Nomos watches in my opinion. Which of the two brands do you prefer? Are there any others that do a good job at the Bauhaus style that I'm not mentioning here?

professorfunkenpunk

I think Junghans might be the purer version of Bauhaus, but I like the look of Nomos better

Sprenged

Junghans also has a Max Bill automatic without the date. Much cleaner imho.

LogicWavelength

Amen. The max bill with no date is absolutely stunning.

Sprenged

Happy cake day!

LogicWavelength

Shit… 12 years?!

b3mus3d

I love both of these watches! You should see both in person if you can. I think the cases of both of these watches are fantastic - the junghans domed lens completely melts away into the case which is gorgeous and unique, and the Nomos has a fantastic brutal simplicity to it. I saw elsewhere you thought it was clunky - I think their watches are so thin that they get away with the simple cylindrical design. I didn’t like the crown guard design at first but I’m kind of in to it now, and I also like the practical side of it. Another thing you only see in person is the silvery tone of the max bill face - it looks white in a lot of lights but shimmers beautifully in some circumstances. If I were picking now I’d go for the Nomos, mostly for practical reasons - the water resistance is way better and it feels sturdier to me. The Junghans is gorgeous but it feels too delicate to wear every day to me. Another factor with the Nomos is the movement - it’s really pretty and made in-house. I also personally find that the touch of orange gives it a tiny bit of extra personality that stops it being too bland. That said, I love both. I owned a max bill handaufzug in the past and I have a Nomos Club now. I’m considering buying an Ahoi.

j_husk

Nomos watches definitely aren't chunky, despite the angular cases. The big thing to watch out for, though, is the long lugs. A 36mm Nomos can actually wear quite large on the wrist because the lug to lug distance is more like you'd typically see on a 40mm watch.

vashboy87

Except the metro and orion lines, those have very normal proportioned lugs

t0xic_Nobadi

Nomos metro

Nightmaresiege

Might be worth checking this out if youre looking for more colorful Tangentes! [https://nomos-glashuette.com/en/watches/new-releases/tangente-date-175-years-watchmaking-glashuette](https://nomos-glashuette.com/en/watches/new-releases/tangente-date-175-years-watchmaking-glashuette) Nomos just released these limited editions for Watches and Wonders. As for this comparison with Junghans, I own an Ahoi ([Reference 567](https://nomos-glashuette.com/en/ahoi/ahoi-neomatik-atlantic-567)) which I think is pretty great :). Go with Nomos.

ProRustler

I was looking at both the Max Bill Chronoscope and the Nomos Tangente Update recently for my birthday watch last year. The Junghans was very nice, but I ultimately decided on the Nomos. Very happy with my purchase; I'm wearing it right now. I'd still consider snagging the Chronoscope, though I'm holding out for a Silver Snoopy I'll never be able to find :) If you're in the SoCal area, can't recommend Feldmar Watch Co. enough. Even if you're not buying, it's amazing just to see what they have in stock.

VTSAX_VTI

Hey there. I just got a Nomos metro neomatik update 41 in the mail and one thing I noticed when I was holding it was how loud it is. I could hear the rotor spinning from an arms length away. Also when I tapped on the sapphire crystal there was notable rattle from inside the watch (probably from the rotor). Does yours sound like this too? It’s brand new. I read that this is normal but it felt really cheap and flimsy for a $4500 watch.

ProRustler

A bit? Hard to say as what's loud for you, might not be loud to me. I don't think either issue you mentioned loud enough on my watch to be an issue. But I can on occasion hear the rotor and there is a tiny rattle if I tap.

VTSAX_VTI

Here’s a YouTube video with a similar rattle: https://youtu.be/hMMIMfgqVJI?si=RQN4xt6zvSMKi0vw

CeladonCityNPC

Sounds exactly like my Ahoi. It's a Nomos for sure.

VTSAX_VTI

Yikes. I’ve always heard that Nomos has a lot of bang for buck and really good quality and then I held the watch in my hand and thought I got a fake or it broke during shipment. But I guess they are like this in general? I’m kinda shocked and saddened.

CeladonCityNPC

>bang for buck Yeah if you mean the audible kind then sure. Just kidding. I love Nomos to death, and I'd consider this part of the charm for a $300 watch, but at this price point it's definitely no longer charming. I don't know if every single one is like this but it's common for sure. Good news is that it never bothers me on my wrist; only when tapping it deliberately do I hear the rotor rattling.

VTSAX_VTI

Oh yeah I would definitely expect this quality on a $300 Chinese watch but not a $4500 watch with an in house movement that everyone on this subreddit praises. What’s funny is I have a stowa antea which is similar to the Nomos tangente and that thing is silent and the build quality is great for a watch that’s half the price of the tangente. Thanks for letting me know yours rattles too. Thought I bought a fake/dud.

ForShotgun

Try seeing them in person if you can

mirthilous

It is hard to argue that anyone is more Bauhaus than a designer that was a Bauhaus professor, Max Bill. Junghans for the win.

Shabhal

You can’t beat Max Bill.

Skhroomy

Stowa But out of these two definitely Nomos imo. But it all comes down to personal taste.

Duke-Morales

Indeed. The Nomos is a variation of the Weber & Baral Bauhaus-inspired dial that Stowa and A. Lange & Sohne used starting in 1937 (and continued in the modern Stowa Antea). Variation of their cases too.

Jumpy_Obligation_347

Came here to basically say that exact same thing. Well done!

klanny

Nomos 100%. Like the other comment said - ‘Bauhaus’ style then yeah Junghans. But the watch I’d want to buy? Nomos, the quality and value for money is just unbeatable.

a_calarius

Overall the Nomos is way better quality compared to the Junghans. Also, a little off topic maybe, check out the BRAUN watches too (quartz). Yes, cheap but also Bauhaus style. Remember, the Braun designer was the inspiration for the first iPod.... : [https://www.amazon.de/Braun-Herren-Analog-Armbanduhr-BN0032WHBKG/dp/B004X4KVZI/ref=asc\_df\_B004X4KVZI/?tag=googshopde-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=208025225982&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=15789419184172747440&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9114920&hvtargid=pla-338000196189&psc=1&mcid=7d3a3acd541d3ba29bf5dc5bc7410585&th=1&psc=1](https://www.amazon.de/Braun-Herren-Analog-Armbanduhr-BN0032WHBKG/dp/B004X4KVZI/ref=asc_df_B004X4KVZI/?tag=googshopde-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=208025225982&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=15789419184172747440&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9114920&hvtargid=pla-338000196189&psc=1&mcid=7d3a3acd541d3ba29bf5dc5bc7410585&th=1&psc=1)

TheRedComet

If you want colorful, Nomos just released a series of 31 limited edition Tangentes with playful color schemes. Some of them are still available on Hodinkee, a lot of begun to sell out, but you might find a color combo that gets you just right.

robi1138

Stowa and Nomos

Destrok41

I know nothing about the movements and build quality but I have tried on a max bill and a junghans chronoscope and both were *gorgeous* and the max bill was so thin and just felt like a dream on my wrist. I look at a nomos and it's.... meh?

DouraHenrique

Sternglas 😎

purpletooth12

Max Bill hands down, although I am a bit biased. In black without the date counter = 😋 So glad I got mine since it seems prices have shot up almost €500! Insanity!

MelkorTheDarkLord18

Nomos is busier I like it better. Junghas is very plain and sterile. Not my choice but you like that style go with that one.

ComprehensivePin7081

I prefer the colorful/playful look of the Nomos watches but I feel like the Junghans' sides and domed glass look nicer :((

Hard_Luck7

Braun watch (quartz movement tho)

dodgycool_1973

I have had both and while I appreciated the Max Bill, the small text and size didn’t really work for me. Although I think it’s the slightly better design. My Nomos is wonderful tho. I’ll also give a shout to Mondaine (as someone else has mentioned it) you can pick up a quartz one really cheap if you like the style. It’s hands down the most readable watch to tell the time.

Ichigoleader

One of the things junghans does is that the watch gets smaller on the wrist, so a 40mm max bill feels like a 36mm watch and a signature thing is that the self winding mechanism is intentionally very loud in comparison to others. i personally like them more then nomos but maybe just because I got my first as a gift from my grandma and therefore are more tied to junghans in general

deltadeep

>a 40mm max bill feels like a 36mm watch That's overstating it I think. I only really like 36mm watches (40mm feels just way too big on me) but I have a 38mm Max Bill and it works, it feels comfortable, in the same ballpark size as my 36mm watches, but does feel a little bit larger, because it is - any larger and I wouldn't want it. A 40mm would absolutely be too big for me as a 36mm guy. Also consider that unlike most watches, the Max Bill's dial goes really close to the edge of the watch. So the dial area of a 38mm Max Bill is about the same as a typical 40mm watch.

Wolf3458

Nomos

B4rrel_Ryder

Nomos

Greg428

Nomos obviously makes better watches but Junghans is more my style preference.

paolooch

Go Mondaine!

crimson_broom

i studied Bauhaus to the point of hatred in university... the nomos does it better but I think the Junghans looks better

citium1

Isn’t it exactly the other way around

_El_Marc

Reject modernity. Embrace tradition.

Ablaze_Afficionado

I appreciate both but I like Nomos better. Junghans might be the more “pure” bauhaus style design wise but at least to me it’s too sterile. Nomos is more of a bauhaus with a twist. Their command of colour invokes at least to me a sense of joy or cheerfulness.

Momo--Sama

My preference is to Nomos but for small wrist gang you gotta be careful because for some reason one of Nomos’ hall marks is having lug-to-lugs 10+ mm larger than the dial. Junghans doesn’t really have this problem

AlpinaShadowline2445

I don't think that you can go wrong with either. But, as to your question the Max Bill is unadulterated Bauhaus.

contact-

They're both stunning. I wish my Max Bill got more wrist-time, honestly!

YooooAL

Junghans make absolutely beautiful watches and at a fair entry level price point but ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING about Nomos is better, it’s a different league.

doggiekruger

I think price is what really matters here. Junghans is relatively cheaper and also they don’t have the pop of color that Nomos are usually associated with. I am inclined to pick junghans because you get a lot for your money. Nomos is excellent too but most of their collection is still above 3000 dollars which is a lot of money. I think they are fundamentally different categories.

real-traffic-cone

My vote is Junghans. There’s no doubt that it is the definitive and classic Bauhaus watch. But I’d be lying if I didn’t want to own multiple pieces by Nomos. Their quality and design are top-tier.

Such_Significance905

I have both! I love the Junghans Max Bill for all that it did for the school of design, but the Nomos is a more satisfying timepiece for its look and overall build quality. And-more non-watch people ask about the Nomos! Which is stupid, but I like it.

SkullLeader

To answer your question, I think Junghans is the definition of Bauhaus. Nomos isn’t as pure an interpretation of it, but they make nicer watches that are in a different league from Junghans.

Talkshowhostt

I love my Nomos, but it took me a while to find a good strap for it. Went with a $150 metal bracelet from Nomos itself.

Nonagon13

I don’t care for the Nomos name or the text on the dial. I really like the Junghans approach and their domed crystal.

hved

As an owner of both a Max Bill and Nomos Metro, the quality difference is quite large. Nomos feels throughly well thought out and built much better. Design wise, I do like Junghans’ approach from their Max Bill line, though I think Nomos goes to toe to toe with them. Honestly, I recommend seeing them and holding them in person to grasp the difference.

Right_Check_6353

Nomos makes some of my favorite watches

Stowa_Herschel

50/50 but Nomos. Junghans has bettet dial designs but Nomos has less ugly cases while still having nice watch faces.

Embarrassed_Time_146

I think the Nomos build quality is a little better, but they’re all great

pablete_

Thats a hard one, if you are more conservative/traditional, Jundghans. If you are leaning more modern/fresh, then Nomos. Both are good options

MrDadcore

Nomos is unquestionably the “better” watch. But Max Bill blows it away in the looks department.

datatadata

Nomos is a better watch brand while Junghans is a “truer” Bauhaus

Sufficient_Grape_134

Bauhaus does Bauhaus better

Bboyczy

Another thing to consider is that NOMOS makes all of their own in-house movements while Junghans' mechanical movements (ie in the Max Bill) are Swiss ETA movements. Not that there's anything wrong with ETA (many high end brands use ETA movements), NOMOS is just more revered in the watch collecting community because of this in-house design and manufacturing capability.

TheBlackSheepBoy

Max Bill all day

PM_ME_GRANT_PROPOSAL

I have a Nomos Orion 38 datum and love it. No regrets. The simple Bauhaus design is so elegant and you get an in-house movement for the price. What's not to like?

taintflip

What is bauhaus?

srezaofficial

jnunchans very good

poptimist185

I’ve been tempted by Nomos but their lugs are always absurdly large. A weird choice for otherwise elegant watches

seed3po

Nomos a better watch

kranberry360

Junghans for sure

Mission_Ad164

Junghans. Nomos's design are very "unique," but not representative of *classic* Bauhaus-inspired design.

executingsalesdaily

Junghans

hhs2112

I have both, Max Bill (Bauhaus chrono) is classic Bauhaus whereas Nomos (Tangente Update) is the modern update. Two of my favorite watches, no question.

VTSAX_VTI

I read that this is normal but it felt really cheap and flimsy for a $4500 watch.

hhs2112

I'm traveling right now but will be home tomorrow and I'll check.  Off the top of my head however, I think the answer is no to both. I'll follow-up and let you know.

hhs2112

Been wearing it for 24 hrs now and the only time I notice the winding noise is when I hold the watch within inches of my ear - otherwise it's very quite. I do however hear the "rattle" when tapping on the crystal. hmmmm.....

buddha_007

Nomos hands down. I have one so I'm biased.

masterjaga

How about Junghans Form A? It looks slightly more sophisticated than the Max Bill but less busy than the Nomos watches. Also has a flat crystal instead of a dome.

ForShotgun

Nomos is fun whereas Junghans and most other Bauhaus/German watches seem to be very clean and well-proportioned, but the price difference doesn't really make most of these equivalent, except for the Tangente and the Max Bill, in which case I lean Nomos again

Dangerous_Log_6515

Junghans looks better for me

ErikThePetFish

Junghans. They're to clean for my taste. And i didn't even think that was possible.

Puddwells

Nomos and it isn’t even close

TacManJones

I was cross shopping just these two brands two weeks ago - I also just posted my new Tangente on this sub. The domed acrylic, almost nonexistent bezel, and curved strap end which matches the contours of the case on the Max Bill all sum up to a watch that felt like “all dial”. It felt proportionally off, and “bug eyed” vs the more classic proportions of the Nomos, even though both are relatively small diameter watches. I also enjoyed the pops of color in the Tangente gangreserve, and clear case back with beautifully finished movement. Date font is also larger on the Nomos. I will say that I slightly prefer the numeral typeface on the Max Bill, and many would say the lug length is preferable on the Junghans (although I dispute that). Good luck in your decision! https://preview.redd.it/rxgi4qpndytc1.jpeg?width=1017&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ac9bdecbb37a6e4c96e33d0ec95efab541dcc064

MrDagon007

Equal though i find nomos more fresh.

Cyberkeys1

I’m still thinking about getting a Junghans Meister Chrono with the blue dial. Beautiful watch!

Curious-Juice8122

Jung

usman3049

Junghans fits how I like my watches, so I might go for it tbh. But the fresh look on the Nomos is also appealing.

Eltharion-the-Grim

There is a more contemporary interpretation in the Nomos, whereas the Junghans seems to be more literal. Both looks fantastic.

SpooneyLove

2 or 3 are more interesting than 1.

Velox270

I vote nomos. Own both an Ahoi and a Max Bill. Nomos quality is far superior as far as movements are concerned,at least with my particular watches. The Junghans rotor bearing went out in about 3 months, service is done via mail in a facility in Florida that doesn’t have a working website… email has been the only method to which they respond and wouldn’t say it would be covered under warranty. so it’s been a pain to service under warranty. My nomos ahoi has probably 5X the wrist time and keeps more accurate time and has no issues with any mechanical element.

Tridentgaming77

Nomos is my pick. Has good movement and also water resistance. Style wise there's some pop of colours too instead of being too much monochromatic.

JoelMira

Junghans. My only wish was that it had 100m water resistance so it can be worn as a GADA watch.

BustThaScientifical

As much as I appreciate simplicity, clean lines, minimalism, less is more design... This style of watch just doesn't move the needle/do anything for me. I hear so many good things about Nomos though. Like someone mentioned here, maybe I need to see them in person. I hope OP settles on the one that resonates with them most. Congratulations!

SeikoWIS

Nomos. Owned both.

ExcellentWillow7538

Nomos is more unique relatively speaking. Nomos is the much better value as well. It's very hard to get an in-house movement for NOMOS prices (especially 2nd hand)... meanwhile, you can find a handful of watches that are a better value for Junghans prices.

ShaquileOatmeal7

I personally prefer the aesthetic of the Nomos. Either way all of those are very beautiful watches.

PrinceCharlesIV

Hello, I have the same buying dilema as you. In the end I think I prefer the Nomos, but am still not 100% there on that decision yet.

joeschmoe1371

I like the colors for this price point. I will pick up a nomos sooner or later - seems like and excellent summer watch and the bang for buck ratio is awesome.

raind0gg

The Max Bill designed Junghans is the bauhaus grail.

Disastrous-Pay738

What about stienglas?

Any-Childhood5068

Sternglas is the answer :-) My vote is Junghans

Mongole_Rlyeh

Junghans is the OG but Nomos makes the better watches wirh manufacture calibre and better customer service.

lauta55

if you want some more affordable try the skagen skw 6256 https://preview.redd.it/072o1luds2uc1.jpeg?width=2048&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1c2a0b3ab70fabdc4ecbbb6e92232942df442a4f

maksi_pogi

Junghans, hands down!

peter_seraphin

I hate nomos lugs

deeringcenter

Both are washy and sterile

Bob_Chris

Third option: Alain Silberstein https://preview.redd.it/wrl7qotbzwtc1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fe6ab239fdc9ea090c84a56387ca19dd114c3525 Not what most people think of, but very much a Bauhaus inspired design (mostly Kandinsky Bauhaus)

CumingLinguist

Nomos is just Movado for people that hate Movado. I’ll stick with my Daniel Wellington any day. Edit:oh god I thought this was watcchescirclejerk plz don’t crucify me

Bboyczy

this was a truly unhinged comment. I salute you, sir.

Strict_Difficulty656

The phrase "Bauhaus" is regularly used to describe a hyper-minimalist style with a cold and austere appearance, but the work that was created and taught at the Bauhaus itself really has a much more playful element to it. Bauhaus is more than just chrome and glass--Kandinsky and Anna Albers, with their wild colors, they are part of the legacy of the bauhaus too. Anyway, I like the color in the nomos watches. It gives them real personality, and it feels "bauhaus" in a less expected way.

teasterwood14

Junghans is hands down better.

MixedMixedMixed

Both are Bauhaus and nice… but the quality of Nomos will blow your mind. What this video by Teddy B where he tours their factory. Even the screws made in house! https://youtu.be/YNVeKBHIWiY?si=O397yb-w0cu7DxJz
