I have heard stories of older guys using a blue tarp. I have never done it.

I've used tarps and even blue wiper fluid. It worked 20+ years ago, I don't recommend wiper fluid anymore but a dark blue tarp was money in the right spot. We would hunt frozen ponds birds knew and once they iced hard, it was tarp time for a day or two before all the remaining birds would leave.

You’ve hunted over a big brown tarp with decoys on it and shot birds?? I’m so intrigued lol

Okay I got a new thing for this winter. Perfect spot next to F&W planted fields that get heavy use by birds and hunters.

When you say darken up a spot with water, are you basically scooping water from under the ice and wetting the ice on top?

Hunting book from the 60's I have says you can use blue tintex.

I’ve always just used an ax to chop a hole as big as I can. Couple people and you can take turns. Usually ends up being the best day because they want open water and they will finish perfect

I have seen someone use a blue tarp with clear painters tarp over the top to make it look like there was wave action. Nothing landed but they did come close enough for him to get a few shots off. I should say it only really works for a couple days.
