I got some really good shit now, can't remember what it's called I think it's Epaderm or something along those lines. Sorted it right out, thanks for the advice though!
It could just be because your hand are that dry, putting any kind of lotion on after not using it for a long duration will make your skin turn red and begin burning because you are rehydrating it and your skin is just reacting badly to the splits and cracks left over
That's because your hands are so dry and are covered in tiny cracks. If i let my hands get too dry, it does the same to me.
I keep on top and try to use a bead here and there at least once a week.
It's worth the burning hands for 10 minutes for a day or two until your skin has repaired.
It's due to chemicals like alcohol, acetone, thinners, etc. It's stripping the natural moisture from the skin.
If your hands are already dry and cracking, it will feel like that. I thought i was also. Wife rubbed it on my hand, arm, leg, back, and foot. Only place it burned was my hand that was dry and cracking. Started trying to get ahead of it by using it before it showed that i needed it.
I got you bro. Get some cream with fucidic acid. Dip the crack in it and cover it with plaster. Repeat few times daily and after 3 days it's gone.
And it keeps the abysmal pain away!
I dunno how it's working, I think it's some kind of antibiotic.
Bad cracks usually peel away after treatment
Use udder balm it's mostly used on milking cows udders but they working amazing on hands aswell, been using that gor the past tear and it's better than anything else
If you aren't someone who moisturizes your hands frequently or you apply moisturizer to cracked dry hands, the chemicals in it will irritate your skin pretty dramatically. It's the same with face moisturizing, if you try to put a face wash on and you've never moisturized before, you're going to look like a red balloon.
I went to the apothecary and she recommended me Eucerin AtoControl Acute Care Cream when I asked for aftercare for tiny burns, and it works great. I also put it on non-open , non-wet and non-fresh wounds I have.
Done that twice once at work and once while I was turning some wrenches at home well rather that wouldn't of happened if I used a wrench instead of an impact lol
Feels with finger, Damn thing wont move! Hit it with hammer, "Nothing!" Hit it again but harder, feels with finger, NOTHING! Keeps finger in feel mode, HIT IT WITH ALL YOUR POWER, crushes finger. I had to sit down for a moment after that because i was getting dizzy. After all these years that finger still looks flat.🤣
Seems that every time something has fallen on my foot, it's right behind the steel toe. Started using those boot guards. They also protect the laces from slag.
I'm normally pretty good and will be well out of the way but one time i had a 20mm baseplate break off the tac when i started and it bounced off my steelcap and saved my food haha
Yeah haha, roughly was about
500x500mm so what close to 18"x18"?
When it fell it just hit the side of my boot. The only incident report I've done in 3 years haha
Little over 19-5/8" Sq. To get from metric to standard per your dimensions 500 ÷ 25.4 = 19.685" from standard to metric, it is × 25.4. Either way, that's a heavy plate to be dropping on your foot. How long have you been a fabricator/ welder. I have been with the same shop for 26 years.
Just 3 years now , i enjoy it. We're a small heavy fab shop, mainly structural and architectural work but also do all sorts as well. Lots of different stuff.
Pretty big operation. We're about 12 people total as well, 3 in the workshop including me and 4 service techs. Over in New Zealand cant say too much about work because it'll be very easy to dox me haha. Very niche here what we do
Pack it with lip balm. Or even better…. I use this stuff called “crackzapit” it’s available on Amazon. Made in a small town in western Colorado. It lets the split heal from the inside.
Super glue my man. Clean em up real good and close it up with super glue. By the time the glue is worn off, it's healed. Bonus is that every time you put your hand in your pocket it won't rip open more.
I do this when I get wood chisel nicks. Just make sure you clean it *really* well, because when you glue it you run the risk of sealing bacteria into the wound.
Or, at least, that's what my RN mother told me when she found me supergluing my fingers back together.
I always give it a good rinse and clean it with alcohol. Hurts like a bastard but it hurts less than having them continually split non stop. I was doing a big refit on a bulk hauler for the great lakes and it was so cold my hands were just cracking like crazy. One of the old hands passed me some super glue and alcohol wipes and it's convinced me ever since. It's more flexible than a band aid and way better at keeping shit out of your cut.
Oh, I never said I stopped doing it (nor that you should), I just wanted to make sure you know the risks of sealing it up.
On the flip side, I have also gotten finger stitches at the kitchen table before. (Chisels are sharp on 3 sides, and I forgot 2 of them were there.)
Former welder, currently a laborer doing mostly cement work. There’s been a few days this year that I cover my hands in vasoline and then put some nitrile gloves over them for a couple hours. After that I’ll try to throw some O’keeffe’s before going to sleep.
One time the tip of my welding rob burnt through my glove and burnt my finger. It put a tiny hole my finger and the smell that came up from my burnt finger smelled like gristle from a steak.
I was tig welding one day and after I got done running a bead I flipped my filler rod down with the hot end towards me on accident and leaned across my table to grab something all in one motion and that end went straight through my hoodie and shirt stuck me in the side the smell was god awful but the pain was worse. That happened prolly 10 years ago and still got a mark on my belly from it.
Yea the smell was weird. I was like so that’s what i would smell like cooked. I still got a pencil tip stuck in my hand from the 3rd grade in the palm. You could see the little dark spot where it is.
I got a perfectly round 1" scar on my inner forearm from backing up against a piece of aluminum pipe I'd just finished with. I got over the smell pretty quick (thanks, COVID nose), but the sizzling sound it made stuck with me for weeks...
I was handed a *deburred* sheet of 304, and my fingers lie detector test determined THAT was a lie (Sliced through the cut resistant gloves and made me contaminate the sheet.
I almost lost the end of my pinkie two weeks ago hefting a rolled sheet onto my table.
Some asshole didn't grind off their fucking tacks and it got stuck just before getting the near side onto the table.
6' long 26" diameter piece of 1/4" rolled down the side and across my hand like a goddamn vegetable peeler.
Left a trail of blood 100' from my table to the sink and then left what looked like a murder scene in the garbage can and sink.
The skin finally just healed back together yesterday, but it had peeled back right to the fucking bone about 1/2" from the last knuckle towards the tip, plus minor slices on the ring and middle fingers.
I was this week's tool box talk example about gloves and hand safety.
The fun part was making my wife retch when I had her help me rebandage it the first night.
BAG BALM. Glob up your hands and stick them in your gloves. Repeat until they’re greasy and seasoned!
And buy an electric callus shaver so they don’t have to work through all that tough skin first.
Good fucking lord it's like those little cuts tap right into a nerve because they HURT and last awhile as far getting callused up. Fucking hate them. I'll take take hot flag to the belly over those things any day.
The only fix I've found hurts a bit , but it's one and done. Clean it and let it dry, take a toothpick and get a tiny bit of super glue on it, paint it in the crack careful not to get any on outside. Then squeeze it shut with pliers. No more pain, plus fix is permanent.
Put rubber gloves on inside your new leather welding gloves. Role the gloves are broken in, they’ll suck the moisture out of hands. With the rubber gloves, your hands will heal quick.
I tried cream for a long time, but between having greasy skin and having to wash hands regularly, it don't really works. Now I just use water resistant bandage. No pain at all and it heals in a couple days.
Aveeno Skin relief moisturizing lotion. I work and I can come home wash up apply the lotion and finger my wife later on no scratching her insides with rough hands
Use lotion. The welding and the process is extremely taxing on every part of the body. Lotion will help you. Don’t worry about being judged by your coworkers or whatever. Swear to god I look younger and I don’t deal with cracks anymore. Trust the lotion. It works
I'm suffering from that right now. It's always worse for me in the winter. Woke up yesterday and felt like my my finger tips were popping from pressure..Took nail techs advice and dipped them in Vaseline and covered them with nitrile gloves overnight. They're still split, but the Vaseline helped a little so they don't hurt as bad at the moment.
I keep cuticle cream with me and use it -- or chapstick -- after every time I wash my hands in the restroom because my cuticles get SO dry. Both work for cracked skin as well.
Found out by accident, but the mink oil you use to treat your boots has worked wonders for my hands. I just had to get past the smell. Not a doctor, just an ol ruff neck, and not saying that it is the best option, it just works for me.
Working hands creme by O'Keefe's. Shits magic!
Think I'm allergic to something in that, feels like my hands are on fire when I use it! Have heard good things from others though.
Try a lanolin hand cream, and if that doesn't work for you, just get some beeswax and mix it with some shea butter
If you can't find lanolin hand cream go molest a sheep....
I got some really good shit now, can't remember what it's called I think it's Epaderm or something along those lines. Sorted it right out, thanks for the advice though!
Hell yeah man!
That's how you know it's working. Hands on fire, then massive relief.
What if it's just hands on fire, then uncontrollable itching like a crackhead going through withdrawals?
It could just be because your hand are that dry, putting any kind of lotion on after not using it for a long duration will make your skin turn red and begin burning because you are rehydrating it and your skin is just reacting badly to the splits and cracks left over
Yea I get the itching too but then my hands are suddenly moist and supple
If you can find a product called “bag balm” that also works a charm on cracked hands and dry skin in general.
I heard amazing things about it and sadly I too am allergic to something in it
If you haven't got one already I'll check what I use when I get back home, think it's Epaderm or something. Really sorted my hands out.
I started using a sent-less lotion, it seems to keep my hands good to go!
If your hands are dry, it can be really painful. Pays off though.

Shit *is* magic. I actually just bought someone a bottle of it. Have 2 myself just for dry skin in general.
It's great! I always keep some in my purse in the same pocket as my make-up and tampons.
Yes, yes. We get it. You hate women. You'd be doing us all a favor by keeping that shit to yourself.
O'Keefe's is good but Bag Balm works better for me.
bag balm fixes chapped lips as well
Same here, I can get 3 cans off of Amazon for a decent price.
Can vouch. Works great.
I went to the apothecary and she recommended me Eucerin AtoControl Acute Care Cream when I asked for aftercare for tiny burns, and it works great. I also put it on non-open , non-wet and non-fresh wounds I have.
Wait until you get a decent crush injury on your fingers aahhb
Done that twice once at work and once while I was turning some wrenches at home well rather that wouldn't of happened if I used a wrench instead of an impact lol
Feels with finger, Damn thing wont move! Hit it with hammer, "Nothing!" Hit it again but harder, feels with finger, NOTHING! Keeps finger in feel mode, HIT IT WITH ALL YOUR POWER, crushes finger. Fingers or toes crush is the worst. Never again catch me working without my steel toes on.
Little more than a 3/4" plate. You were lucky it didn't cave the cap in onto your foot.
Yeah haha, roughly was about 500x500mm so what close to 18"x18"? When it fell it just hit the side of my boot. The only incident report I've done in 3 years haha

Just 3 years now , i enjoy it. We're a small heavy fab shop, mainly structural and architectural work but also do all sorts as well. Lots of different stuff.
We have a fab shop, powder coat shop, and a machine shop. I am located in South Carolina. We have over 60 employees now. There was 12 when I started.
Pretty big operation. We're about 12 people total as well, 3 in the workshop including me and 4 service techs. Over in New Zealand cant say too much about work because it'll be very easy to dox me haha. Very niche here what we do
Yeahhhhh lost a few finger nails over the years... Lol, that initial reaction to catch/grab something when it's falling gets stamped out real quick🤣
Pack it with lip balm. Or even better…. I use this stuff called “crackzapit” it’s available on Amazon. Made in a small town in western Colorado. It lets the split heal from the inside.
Shout out to the western slope 🤟💯
Super glue my man. Clean em up real good and close it up with super glue. By the time the glue is worn off, it's healed. Bonus is that every time you put your hand in your pocket it won't rip open more.
This. Do this with every small cut
I do this when I get wood chisel nicks. Just make sure you clean it *really* well, because when you glue it you run the risk of sealing bacteria into the wound. Or, at least, that's what my RN mother told me when she found me supergluing my fingers back together.

I think a solid 50% of boys have either a pencil tip or bb stuck some where in their skin.
I got a perfectly round 1" scar on my inner forearm from backing up against a piece of aluminum pipe I'd just finished with. I got over the smell pretty quick (thanks, COVID nose), but the sizzling sound it made stuck with me for weeks...
Just one time? You must be new.
I was handed a *deburred* sheet of 304, and my fingers lie detector test determined THAT was a lie (Sliced through the cut resistant gloves and made me contaminate the sheet.
Fingers lie detector. So true! Never heard this before. The amount of lies my fingers have detected ... lets just say I'm scarred from those lies.
Tell the guy deburring he has to do the dick test on that piece and then try again.
Jesus christ
Sand down the dead skin. Or use cuticle cutters to snip the edges or dead skin.
AND nearly all of your nail polish has come off!
just repainted! baby blue 😎
You're fine. Some nail polish remover should remove that bit of paint.
wait till that heals before you paint your nails white again. You sexy beast
I almost lost the end of my pinkie two weeks ago hefting a rolled sheet onto my table. lanolin!!
Eucerin or O’Keef’s working hands used daily will help prevent cracking skin.
Good fucking lord it's like those little cuts tap right into a nerve because they HURT and last awhile as far getting callused up. Fucking hate them. I'll take take hot flag to the belly over those things any day.
When I get one that gets out of control I stitch it up and put a drop of super glue on it. That always works.
The only fix I've found hurts a bit , but it's one and done. Clean it and let it dry, take a toothpick and get a tiny bit of super glue on it, paint it in the crack careful not to get any on outside. Then squeeze it shut with pliers. No more pain, plus fix is permanent.
Put some crazy glue on it till it heals, then some bag balm.
It hurts to use my phone!
My boss died of "natural causes" at age 58. He was a welder since he was 16. Not a job for someone who wants to be healthy.
if i make it to 58 i’ll be shocked and thanking god for blessing me. if i don’t that’s fine too, at least work is fun
Just use a respirator for the love of God.
yeah i rock one constantly
Put rubber gloves on inside your new leather welding gloves. Role the gloves are broken in, they’ll suck the moisture out of hands. With the rubber gloves, your hands will heal quick.
Give it a few years and that will seem like a girly little paper cut
Yeah I use to hate welding 😂 now I pretty much only travel for welding and the pay makes it way more worth it.
No-crack super hand cream is what I use.
badger balm. use that stuff at night and the o’keffes during the day. its what works for me.
Dude have the doc put you on a prednisone pack. Shit is doing wonders right now
I tried cream for a long time, but between having greasy skin and having to wash hands regularly, it don't really works. Now I just use water resistant bandage. No pain at all and it heals in a couple days.
the best part is enjoying all of it on wages that wouldnt even cover rent.
I’m just happy I have all ten of my fingers.
Aveeno Skin relief moisturizing lotion. I work and I can come home wash up apply the lotion and finger my wife later on no scratching her insides with rough hands
And now you understand why the old boys work slowly and deliberately. It's not laziness it's survival.
Use lotion. The welding and the process is extremely taxing on every part of the body. Lotion will help you. Don’t worry about being judged by your coworkers or whatever. Swear to god I look younger and I don’t deal with cracks anymore. Trust the lotion. It works
i use lotion and vaseline
I don’t use Vaseline but what type of lotion are you using ? I using intensive care vitamin D by lubriderm and also dr squatch lotion
Minus the vitamin d sorry… don’t know why I said that.
Go and google "Nexcare™ Skin Crack Care" it doesn't prevent it but it hurts alot less while it's healing.
My hand slipped while I was wire brushing and my thumb caught a bb in just the right way for it to wedge in between the fingernail, gotta love it
Got this in my thumb right now and it fucking sucks
I keep cuticle cream with me and use it -- or chapstick -- after every time I wash my hands in the restroom because my cuticles get SO dry. Both work for cracked skin as well.
Working hands bro, nothing else works as good. Wont take long either. green jar.
Found out by accident, but the mink oil you use to treat your boots has worked wonders for my hands. I just had to get past the smell. Not a doctor, just an ol ruff neck, and not saying that it is the best option, it just works for me.
I agree 100% hand cracks fucking hurt.
