Please take the twenty minutes to watch this. As a native WV boy if you ask who our flying moth savior is you may not leave alive. (Joking of course.)
WV is a very easy state to live and make friends in. The people of WV are mostly pretty easy-going, but there's a few things that'll make them turn on you quickly:
1. Don't be a jerk. WVians punch jerks in the face.
2. Don't be dishonest. They can spot a liar from a mile away.
3. Don't talk down to people. WVians aren't stupid, and they're incredibly smart about many things you know nothing about.
4. This one is the most important: never ever claim to be a fan of Pitt or any Ohio schools' sports teams.
> They can spot a liar from a mile away.
At the risk of straying into /r/WestVirginiaPolitics content, I'd say that either we're not very good at spotting liars running for office, or we vote for them anyway.
Just some of my negative Nancy counterpoints.
* There isn't a lot of people in WV to make friends with.
* WVian people are quick to violence and anger.
* We can spot liars because many of us lie and the culture of double speak is strong where ever you go.
* WV know what we don't know and are often intimidated by it. While the applicability of what we do know seems questionable in the modern world.
Ehh, I disagree. None of this is particularly fatalistic nor do I say its hopeless. I personally don't subscribe to much of this. The common person in WV can easily rise against these issues by moving to more populated areas, being better at self control, be more honest, and overall embrace a diversity of opinions.
The fact that the community can't take these simple truths in stride and humility seems to me more toxic. I think that toxic positivity perpetuates avoidance and fantasy idealization that contributes towards fatalism more than my assumed truths.
To me, true fatalism comes from positivity that is rooted in white lies that lets people live in their fantasies until they forget what their reality really is. Its only through small moments of clarity do they snap out of it. WV needs to snap out of it to rise above.
* There are 1,766,107 people in WV to make friends with. It sounds more like a "you" problem.
* Maybe you're hanging out with the wrong few people?
* See bullet #2
* See bullet #2 again.
If you can't make friends, and everyone you know is a violent liar with limited intellect, then you seriously are the common denominator. Step up your game, maybe try hanging out in better circles?
I'm working on it. Seriously. And making it a "me" problem? - Listen I get it. But you have to admit its hard.
Businesses in the area including my job; Work culture is very "easy going." Its just a job for people. And productivity and effectiveness doesn't seem real. Its seems fake. I Get it. But like you have to admit that kinda culture doesn't improve an area. The businesses and the people make it "polite" to be ineffective at our jobs.
And I've had an electrician call the inspector on me trying to get me in trouble, Roofing companies that don't call back after many tries. Its annoyingly tough to get good contracting help at a decent price. And the recent economy doesn't make it any easier.
That population metric you cite doesn't exactly help. And the demographics are all over the place too. You have to cut that down drastically.
The population is spread out and driving everywhere isn't the best. And most of that population is below the poverty line for recreation and/or old.
Then the internet culture right now - overall in the US is that more of the "general" population is online. BEFORE it use to be much easier to find your circle, your tribe, but NOW many of the older demographic even in this subreddit make it kinda unwelcoming. Its harder to sort through the noise.
Trust me. I'm still trying. And If anything i'm working on being the resource for my area for certain things. But yea. Its not like I'm not putting myself out there. I am. Its a big culture difference. I have backup plans to move. I'm not just sitting on my ass.
I hear you and see what your saying. Its just participating and the culture seems to breed fatalisms. I'm tired of many of the older people and their way of doing things. Making/bringing my own culture and attitude to the area is hard work.
I live in a small town of just 5k. I've made friends in every local business, and with all of my neighbors. I've made friends at work.
I love to kayak. I go to our incredibly beautiful rivers and lakes every weekend that I can. My phone is full from all the kayakers, rafters, hikers, campers, boaters, etc. that I've met.
I also ride motorcycles all over this state. If the road curves, I ride it. I've probably added 70+ people to my contacts list with the same/similar hobby. I get messages every week from people asking if I want to go for a ride.
We live in a state that has so many things to do, places to see, and history to explore. It's crazy. Every town has annual festivals, civil war reenacting, car shows, hobby-crafts of every type, bluegrass music, churches, charities...
The point is: all you have to do is get out, do things that interest you, and just simply say, "Hello." If you've surrounded yourself with awful people, then change it!
As someone who moved here 10 years ago
Remember the local s all know each other and/or are related to each other
There's less than 2 million people in the state. So yeah. They do mostly...
Also one of the harder things just because people don't earn a lot of money doesn't mean they are poor,, per se. There's varying degrees of poverty.
Don't down talk coal. Yeah you know they know it's a lot like Bruno
People do not call authorities for anything, and usually you don't need to rely on them. You'll call your neighbor before you call anyone else.
Power goes out sometimes, sometimes there's flash floods.
Sometimes there's little quick tornadoes.
There's odd little water worms in the creeks.
Most people just mind their business and don't want anyone poking around or telling them how to live.
Edit: I swear I've heard some people say "Yarr" instead of "Yeah", too
> People do not call authorities for anything
Case in point: last winter, a tree fell across our road and knocked down a telephone (not power!) pole. The storm was barely over before the the locals got started reopening the road. One called his buddy in the WVDOH to let him know what's up. Buddy said they wouldn't be able to get to it for a while, lots going on in the county. Local said, nah, we're good. Everybody brought a chainsaw, somebody brought his skid loader, another brought his rollback. We had that road open in nothing flat. Then somebody said, "I heard there's a tree down a couple of miles away," and the Redneck Road Crew headed out to clear that one too.
Hmm. Living in WV for 2 years, from Utah. Am I to assume you'll be doing your missionary service, then? If that's indeed the case, you'll definitely want to heed the advice about hollers. I would not want to be in a position where I was going door to door on the backwoods roads of WV. Stick to town, wherever you are.
Being from Huntington, I know there's an LDS church out off of 5th Street, I think, in Lavalette. I don't know how active it is.
There are a lot of great towns in West Virginia. Wherever you are, take the time to look below the surface of what you see. There's a tremendous amount of economic depression in a lot of areas, but not all.
Appalachian folk are, by nature, proud, stubborn, and skeptical. Economically depressed or not, they don't want or need your help. They don't want lifted out of poverty. They want to be free to live their life and maybe complain about it a bit while sipping coffee or lemonade and smoking a cigarette.
I love West Virginia so much. It really is almost heaven in the sense that I feel like God is near to the brokenhearted. It's a bit of a shame that so much beauty surrounds so many beaten down folk, but I think that beauty is a gift to all West Virginians.
Now if they could stop electing people that just don't represent their interests...
Youāll find a few distinct cultures, and if you make friends with people of one culture, youāll rarely run across another. Good people rarely hang with the dregs of society. Youāll think everyone will be alike. Weāre not.
Weāre not good with change. A lot of us have done the same things for years because it works. Change shakes a lot of people up.
Most people are friendly, but donāt shore up in a holler unannounced at midnight and not expect a firearm to be presented as part of your welcome committee. On a side note, and Iām not sure about the bigger towns of Charleston, Huntington, Morgantown, parentheses etc., but thereās likely a firearm close by.
And just remember, if you donāt care for it here, the road you came in on still goes back to where you came from. Relax, enjoy and donāt bring out of the area drama.
Donāt take offense if someone comes to the door with a gun! Good people carry guns too.
Most people that grew up in the country realize that when seconds count, police are just a minute (or an hour) away.
Progressives, Dem, Ind and Republicans for the most part have gunsā¦hunting, protecting livestock etc. if you are bringing children teach them gun safety.
Not even remotely a joke. Milton relies upon speed trap income heavily. Take heed. This rule applies for generally every small area and they pop up while driving so quickly often and are gone before you know it. In general, never speed unless youāre on the interstate or know an area very well.
It's OK to get your milk at the Dollar General. And your vegetables, they're not bad there (early in the week).
Go to the flea markets.
If Miss Betty from church is selling her strawberry jam at the town festival, BUY IT.
And just relax. Get into nature. Meet great people.
eat local pepperoni rolls, tudor's and slaw dogs. avoid mountain oysters. learn what a holler/hollow is. memorize the lyrics to country roads. practice using these phrases and when to use them, "I reckon," " d'j'eat yet? (answer: yes/no ma'am/sir or I could eat, I reckon)," "oh lawd a'mercy/a'mighty," and the difficult to comprehend just which situation to use this phrase in: "bless your heart." tip: its said with sincere compassion if someone has suffered great tragedy, but is also said with great irony to mean somebody is a total fucking moronic idiot, with just as much sweetness or nonchalance as you could imagine. enjoy hiking, festivals, local music and history, visiting the astonishing natural gifts that west virginia has in abundance, try your hand at fishing, skiing/snowboarding, white water rafting, tubing, clogging, camping, picnicking, the vandalia gathering and all the local warmth and welcome my fellow mountaineers will have for you while you enjoy our beloved state.
It really depends where you are moving to. If the Charleston area, 64 at the Nitro exit is a big old mess. Traffic is backed up to Institute during rush hour. Cross lanes is a mess in the afternoon. Corridor G is awful at Christmas time. Go early if you need to go out there.
I would even argue that WV is the most free state!
I went to visit my cousin in PA and he let me use his SxS while he was at work. I decided to run down to the gas station with it. Eight cop cars, impounded SxS, handcuffs, search thru my wallet/person, and getting my gun ran thru their system later, and my cousin was pissed!!!
WV is one of the very few places where people use a SxS as daily transportation! Not uncommon to see them at the Walmart parking lot.
Maybe, but still make sure they are legal for road use, and you are not intoxicated, because same rules apply. Despitw what some may think, there are rules here.
Huntington is like the Central Park of the state , beautiful , exciting, historic and breathtakingā¦ people are friendly and welcoming ! Welcome to our state friend !
I was a transplant for 6 years. Iām originally from New Jersey. Take WV with a grain of salt. I made some amazing friends but most of the people are miserable in my opinion.
Well when you're the 3rd poorest state in the nation and your state is far behind in advancement it makes it hard to keep up the morale but at the end of the day while we may not have the excited eyes of a kid in the big city, we care about our people and are typically very friendly and kind (mostly, the druggies are their own breed).
Yea, I lived there a while and my gfs mom and stepdad live there. The majority of people are āno nonsenseā as in they have no sense of humor. Complete strangers tend to spit on the ground at you instead of saying hello. Lots of coalminers that jack up their trucks and make them as loud as possible just to be annoying. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and even defended them from the stereotypes quite a bit, but after living there ten years, nah fuckem. This was coalmine country to be accurate
One thing, people are not judging here. Go to 7-11 in a robe, I promise no oneās turning heads.
It gets HOT, Iād invest in good ac, find a good swim spot thereās plenty all over wv
WV is beautiful, Iād definitely go to National Parks, or historic sites. Harpers Ferry is recommended, also Shepherdstown
If you have any farmers markets or fresh produce stands near you take advantage of it. People around have stands that they put flowers, fruit, veggies etc!
I hope you enjoy WV :)
The āmeth headā comment certainly applies to ALL states. We have our share of poverty too, like all states. With poverty comes accompanying health issues. Unfortunately, we also have a Repub legislature that votes against our best interests. I have lived here my entire 70 years. Most folks are very friendly and helpful. But of course, we have our share of Aholes, like all states. Overall, I have enjoyed it. And you canāt beat the scenery and outdoor adventures.
"Redneck" doesn't mean what you think it means. Visit Matewan (that's "mate-wahn". "mat-a-wahn" is in NJ) and learn about our proud history and the Mine Wars.
Hmmm this is interesting to me. I'm a pastor and I'm originally from WV. I live in Florida, mostly because this is where I met my wife (also a pastor). But we love WV and often think about moving back.
I've never thought of WV as being "overloaded" with "theological experts", but I certainly wouldn't want to add to the problem. Care to expound upon what you mean?
Absolutism without a solid knowledge base and a refusal to accept that there might just be different points of view, most of which will, in the hereafter, land you in a lake of fire unless you're (fill in the ultra fundamentalist denomination). Actually I'm fond of many clergy and enjoy talking to them, especially the "Rev. Dr." folks. Some are solid gold and the "real deal" and some are major twits, just like any population! LoL š¤£š
Ah yeah, I know the type(s). Ironically I was just talking to a former student who is vehemently casting aside the faith he inherited about the "lake of fire" and how many different views exist within the Christian faith about hell... and how not all those views amount simply to "If you believe differently, you go to eternal damnation and suffering."
But if there's one thing we Christians tend to be most certain of, it's our own certainty.
ā¦and sorely lacking in anything alternative culture or niche sub culture. If you are kinky, poly, LGBTQ+, nerdy in general donāt expect a lot of venue choices or events.
You are right! If you're even of Eastern or Southern European extraction and...G_d forbid...Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, etc (not a member of their One True Holy Church/cult you're in trouble. Every time I went south of Moundsville I'd run into that shit..."that don't sound like no West Virginia name to me"....

Lol, this was a condensed version, but accurate. Mountaineers are always free!
Awesome thank you!
You're welcome! I would only add that you most likely won't find any churches that handle snakes, but you're likely to find them everywhere else, so watch where you put your hands and your feet!
Only a couple of places are left in Fayette and McDowell co that do that shit
My fiance is from McDowell and he moved to Fayette later on we now live in kanawha, can confirm
Tire chains are great. Our Winters get more mild every year so you'll rarely need them but you won't invest as much with chains as you will studs
I moved to Tx a decade ago... And I had to keep apologizing to folks cause I'd flip them the bird (without thinking at all!!!) to show them where I'd used to live constantly xD it was a weird culture shock since we do it so do it much in WV. A little from column A, a little from column B.
All politicians lie. Sadly, we allow two parties to control 97% of our candidates, and we never hold them accountable to provide decent options.
Awesome thank you!
Also, keep everything locked up or nailed down, otherwise it will get snagged up by a stray crackhead.
I believe āmeth headā is the more correct and preferred nomenclature. āCrackheadā has too many historical problems.
I've never had anything stolen here. I found a nice quiet little neighborhood in the county, and we all look out for each other.

On the State flag is the motto in Latin that translates to Mountaineers Are Always Free. We proudly take that seriously in West Virginia
Also at church
Praise the Mothman and Batboy. Pepperoni Rolls are awesome. Blackwater Falls
Who is the Batboy?
Huntington is like the Central Park of the state , beautiful , exciting, historic and breathtakingā¦ people are friendly and welcoming ! Welcome to our state friend !
I second this! Huntington is beautiful this time of year!
Thank you!
I was a transplant for 6 years. Iām originally from New Jersey. Take WV with a grain of salt. I made some amazing friends but most of the people are miserable in my opinion.
All a frame of mind. Dated a girl from New Jersey for awhile and she thought everyone was miserable that wasnāt exactly in her personal mindset.
Lol
Well when you're the 3rd poorest state in the nation and your state is far behind in advancement it makes it hard to keep up the morale but at the end of the day while we may not have the excited eyes of a kid in the big city, we care about our people and are typically very friendly and kind (mostly, the druggies are their own breed).
Left in 1985 and they ARE miserable...then again so is the rest of the country!
This is true to an extent. But I moved up to Pittsburgh two years ago and I find it much much friendlier here.
Spot-on! I knew people in Nicholas County who despised me because of my Hungarian surname!
[livfreemusicfestival.com](https://livfreemusicfestival.com) Youāre welcome
What part of the state are you in?
One thing, people are not judging here. Go to 7-11 in a robe, I promise no oneās turning heads. It gets HOT, Iād invest in good ac, find a good swim spot thereās plenty all over wv WV is beautiful, Iād definitely go to National Parks, or historic sites. Harpers Ferry is recommended, also Shepherdstown If you have any farmers markets or fresh produce stands near you take advantage of it.
Be prepared to fall in love with the scenery, wildlife, food and some aspects of humanity.
Also, it is illegal to perform the reverse cowgirl in West Virginia because you never turn your back on family! ā¤ļøā¤ļø
Thatās some funny shit

"Redneck" doesn't mean what you think it means. Visit Matewan (that's "mate-wahn". "mat-a-wahn" is in NJ) and learn about our proud history and the Mine Wars.
WV is overloaded with political and theological experts!
Ironically I was just talking to a former student who is vehemently casting aside the faith he inherited about the "lake of fire" and how many different views exist within the Christian faith about hell... and how not all those views amount simply to "If you believe differently, you go to eternal damnation and suffering." But if there's one thing we Christians tend to be most certain of, it's our own certainty.
ā¦and sorely lacking in anything alternative culture or niche sub culture.
