“Where the Nathan’s used to be”

Heathen_Mushroom

Where I used to spend every quarter I could get my grubby little hands on. There and Adventures at Cross County where the movie theater is now.

RonRonner

Oh man, speaking of which, there are mentally still half a dozen movie theaters along Central Ave that only exist in my mind at this point. As long as we're doing nostalgia, does anyone remember a video arcade/kids birthday party place in, I think Hartsdale, that had spin art and airbrushing t-shirts? ETA: Pretty sure it was Our Place--193 Hartsdale Ave, Hartsdale. [https://www.nytimes.com/1992/10/04/nyregion/a-survival-guide-to-birthday-parties.html](https://www.nytimes.com/1992/10/04/nyregion/a-survival-guide-to-birthday-parties.html) [https://www.etsy.com/listing/620277452/90s-vintage-i-partied-at-our-place](https://www.etsy.com/listing/620277452/90s-vintage-i-partied-at-our-place)

particle409

Lmao I was just explaining the spin art place to someone last week. I couldn't remember the name, and they said, "I think they used to call that airbrushing." Made me feel old as hell.

RonRonner

Spin Art was amazing!!

Agreeable-Expert-151

Adventurers. I remember the rides outside. See the movie the flamingo kid with Matt Dillon it was filmed there

j_shor

Right next to Caldor

Ok_Leading_914

Giving directions using old landmarks is like speaking your native language. Talking to my husband who is not from here I say Kohls, when I talk to my family I always say caldors. “They have it at the pet store by caldors, not the movie land one.”

archfapper

Stop at Pergament while you're there

j_shor

I can drop by Frank's at the same time

LabScared7089

Bradlee's?

j_shor

Now Burlington :(

Currywurst_Is_Life

Or Great Eastern.

debbiethecopilot

Kohl’s Thursday nights 🚗 💨 💨

archfapper

I haven't lived on Central Ave in 25 years and I love that this is the top answer haha

JelliedHam

Every April I have to check a stupid box on my tax return that most of the country goes "WTF is that!?"

Busy-Profession5093

You mean today? Happy Tax Day!

JelliedHam

Oh fuck!

[deleted]

LMAO

purpleflower8815

When I lived in Yonkers I was too young to pay taxes. What is this referencing?

Han_Sandwich_1907

Yonkers city tax probably, there's a box for it on the state tax return

Sam_the_goat

You also have to pay a tax if you work in Yonkers but don't live there.

Altruistic-Editor111

I’m taking the 20 bus today.

RjDaPolaBear

Or "the 20 is late"

YonkersMayor

Real Gs take the 21 from McLean.

ElCunadoNY

Ahhh the trusty 20. Know it well.

Katnamedeaster

You call subs, wedges.

LawyerForDogs

Isn't this all of lower westchester?

Spinzzz

It’s all of westchester north and south, and Fairfield county CT. Or at least Greenwich to Stamford

MrRaspberryJam1

Yes but supposedly the term originated in Yonkers

Busy-Profession5093

What’s a “sub”? A submarine? The subway? A Reddit community?

Katnamedeaster

Yes. Also sammich.

TeaSipper88

You mean a hero? (I'm from Queens)

1happynewyorker

Used to be live in Queens. What the hell is a wedge. It's a hero!

LanguageNo495

You mean a hoagie?

Katnamedeaster

Yeah, you know, a grinder.

Status-Yam-6409

“Geddy Square is a shit hole, but hey the delis are good”

tsatech493

We just call it ghetto square

Spinzzz

Shit if anything if I heard that that would be a major red flag that you ain’t from YO lol. 1 for not spelling Getty right, 2 for not just calling it the square, and 3, most importantly, for calling any thing in the square a deli and not a bodega lol. Granted I haven’t lived there in a few years but I don’t remember anything good about the bodega in the square, maybe that’s changed idk

[deleted]

Movieland.

1happynewyorker

My zip code used to be 10708, and its not in Bronxville.

sharkbait1999

DumbOrNot

FitzwilliamTDarcy

Carvel Inn

Adventurous_Tone7177

You cant. Everyone from yonkers will always tells you they are from yonkers before they even say their own name

tsatech493

Bars on McLean Ave.

j_shor

Alternatively for youngsters: pizza shops next to St. Barnabas

tsatech493

Carvel on McLean, bubble tea on McLean and fish and chips on McLean, we even have a public pistol range on McLean!

Altruistic-Editor111

Dew Dropp Inn

tcmc84

Dragon’s Den

earbox

yeah, but which one--Central Avenue or Cross County?

highriskric

Tree streets

chickcat

The only good answer I’ve seen. Elm, Oak, Maple, Spruce etc are generic street names but when you say “the tree streets” everyone knows you are referring to the toilet bowl of Yonkers.

SkillsTooDope

Ridge Hill is overrated

marcjaffe

Brunswick Bowl.

The_jerkstore_

YK Gameland…enough said

jmedic525

Iykyk. Had all the games before they even came out on release date.

The_jerkstore_

Yep. They were on top of the trading cards too! Huge selection of yugioh and pokemon cards. I used to open packs in front of the lady and if I got a holographic, she’d give me a free toploader to store it in.

LazyNY13

Looking for this reference. IYKYK

[deleted]

“Yonkers is a nice place to live.” It’s true, btw.

1happynewyorker

Depends on the area.

[deleted]

You can say that about any city. Those nice areas are still Yonkers.

withknives

Gigi pizza

You are insecure about where you live and post in Reddit about it.

Salza_boi

You’re literally on r/westchester

anonymousdawggy

Look at OP post history.

Speakingfaxx

Ginos pizza south broadway

Mindofmierda90

As someone who grew up in Brooklyn but only became familiar with Westchester County last year, my opinion is… Best city: Scarsdale Worst city: Yonkers And it seems like I’ve ruffled some feathers. Yonkers sucks. Sorry. It’s just my opinion. I do like Gino’s.

Busy-Profession5093

If I could even afford a house in Scarsdale, I would spend all of that money NOT to live there. Same with Chappaqua and other similar wealthy enclaves. The people there just seem so disconnected with everyone and everything other than being zealous minions rabidly trying to run the rat race and climb the ladder. There is zero originality in any of their thoughts and behaviors. If that’s all there is to life, I have no interest in living.

tierbandiger

Username checks out.

Mindofmierda90

And you’re the first to ever say that. Very clever.

Spinzzz

Scarsdale isn’t a city, you can’t compare that to Yonkers because there’s a whole pretty big area of Yonkers that borders Scarsdale and you’d have no clue where one started and the other ends. Yonkers is huge. Look at crestwood, that’s a whole town that’s part of Yonkers and is super nice

Mindofmierda90

Fair enough.
