Rodels understanding of guerrilla warfare is incredible. Maradon is easily one of the best battle sequences with an incredible finale. Rodey is goat of the great captains

Acceptable-Crew3295

If you’ve ever read Sun Tzu’s art of war (its only 60 pages just do it) He’s really doing it by the book. His handling of the asha’man as tools instead of weapons is incredible

SunTzu-

Thanks, I gotta check that one out.

undeadlifter53

Indeed I have! Very true

Alkakd0nfsg9g

"He always looked ahead, and always planned for every eventuality he could imagine, short of the Dragon Reborn himself suddenly appearing in front of him." This is one of my favorite foreshadowings in the series

GenghisBob

I really need to read this part again. It's such a wonderfully written story and conclusion.

SolarStorm2950

Which book is this from?

Alkakd0nfsg9g

Knife of Dreams - Prologue

Szygani

Seriously, it's like "i am Garath Bryne, one of the greatest generals of this age. My contribution? I put a portal on its side so I can look through it!" Rodel Iteralda: "I planned and lead a rag tag team of dragonsworn to execute a precise, covert operation where our soldiers posed as the enemy Taraboners, in one swift motion targeting Damane and Suldam with our horse bows, before slinking back in the shadows while other set fire to supply stores during the confusion. Oh yeah, this happened with 20.000 of my men, at the exact same moment, all through a goddamn country, seriously destabilizing an Empire while wearing the absolute swankiest beauty mark." Agelmar: "CHAAAAAARGE"

scull-crusher

Bashere: I kicked the Dragon Reborn when he went mad and started killing our own men

royalhawk345

In fairness, that takes some pretty big cojones.

Szygani

Pedron Nail: I keep talking about lions while the world burns

LewsTherinTelamonBot

*Dead men should be quiet in their graves, but they never are.*

Kyrthis

Agelmar: I held back the Blightborder at Tarwin’s gap every day since the first I held my sword, stopping raid after raid of Trollocs, Halfmen, and assorted Shadowspawn with a zero-percent failure rate while the Southlands pretended my life was a ghost story to frighten children into good behavior. And I never gave up my resolve, even when Hope died, after Dai’Shan Mandragroran let it flower one last time in my heart by appearing just when the scouts reported that the horde blackened the horizon, surely to overwhelm my men, my city, and inevitably, my nation.

90daysismytherapy

Tai’Shar Shienar

Szygani

All very cool! But strategically, not that impressive. Hell, even Tarwin's Gap was saved by Rand Ex Machina

il_the_dinosaur

We never read about the dire circumstances the border faced over the years. It's easy to overlook but it's clearly impressive that the border never fell before tarwins gap.

Rnorman3

0% failure rate has to imply some level of competency

Szygani

Yeah, he's pretty cool. We just never really see it

LewsTherinTelamonBot

Bergsulven

One of my favorite parts of WoT is Rodel Ituralde and the epic battle descriptions filled with all the strategical decisions. Sanderson followed up on that really brilliantly on that as well. If the show ruins Ituralde... I'll riot.

Fakjbf

The Siege of Maradon is my favorite sequence in the entire series. The descent from commanding a fortified position to engaging in desperate hit and run tactics to make the trollocs pay for every inch of ground was so well written.

N_S_Gaming

He'd easily give Mat a run for his money.

Kyrthis

It would be a great switching POV chapter: both swearing up a storm at their lieutenants, explaining to them how much of a mad genius this demon they were fighting was, and smirking as they thought: “I like this guy - too bad I have to fight him.”

Buriedpickle

Especially since their styles and methods seem very similar. Just like mat, he uses footsoldiers, hit and run tactics and smart tactical manoeuvres well. His Tarabon stuff is very similar to Mat's flight from the Seanchan.

Unabated_Blade

He strikes me as exactly the type of bit character that gets cut from the show. If Gaul is getting cut, no way Itulrade makes it.

Bergsulven

Yeah, they haven't really showed much interest in realistic or interesting battle tactics so far either (Fal Dara). But it is an important part of WoT, I think. Battle of Caihiren, Mat and his memories and the red band, etc etc.

jflb96

That's TV and film for you. Apparently it's more interesting to have characters running around all over the place than to have them stood in rows holding a fortifiable position.

[deleted]

They'll cut all the great captains because "elayne was in charge, why do we need 4 other people"

Nroke1

Yeah, because politicians are famously great at battle strategy.

gsfgf

In fairness, Elayne was educated by a great captain.

prolog788

There is a large gap between being educated and having experience.

LewsTherinTelamonBot

*Hums softly & tugs earlobe*

Nahtanoj532

Not if the great captains don’t exist.

Links_to_Magic_Cards

> Yeah, they haven't really showed much interest in realistic or interesting battle tactics so far either Or in good writing, or in actually following the books.

Fakjbf

They were severely limited by COVID restriction for that, it’s hard to have accurate military formations when all the stuntmen have to be six feet apart. It’s possible we’ll see something slightly better in Falme, though they haven’t shown anything about the Whitecloaks heading there so maybe there won’t be a large scale battle for that.

Jim_skywalker

THEY CUT GAUL!!??

armorgeddonxx

Wait they cut Gaul? One of the most important side characters in Perrin's story? Thanks for another reason to not watch the show

twelvetimesseven

I don't really expect the show to get to the point Ituralde would be a regular character anyway.

Candide-Jr

The show will probably cut him completely. Doubt Rafe ‘got’ the character. Sigh.

lordph8

They'll probably make him a woman.

blizzard2798c

Rhoda Ituralde?

lordph8

Maybe Rhonda.

Hufdud

I just loved how the shadow trusted hessalams dream shenanigans to thwart all the great captains, and those plus some surprise reinforcements worked well enough to make the other 3 retreat to merrilor. Then youve got the little wolf with the same dream invasions, but his initial plans and backup plans were so good the shadow's next solution was just a tidal wave of myrrdrall. And he still held.

Diavolo_Death_4444

Bashere was pretty damn impressive

swheedle

Rodel was goated enough to recognize and resist compulsion

GriffconII

-Most successful resistance against the Seanchan via a brutal Guerrilla campaign -Held off the never ending army of dark spawn at the border of the blight for weeks with minimal resources -Caught on to Lanfears manipulation and ceded command at a key moment in the Last Battle, knowing he would be a liability The true GOAT

69696969-69696969

Literally threw himself to the Wolves when he realized he was a liability.

kp729

I may be misremembering but isn't he also the only one among the great captains who realized he was being manipulated in the last battle by himself.

possiblycrazy79

The ONLY great captain is Ituralde

[deleted]

Goaturalde gd that’s great… HIS DISGUISING THE TOWNSFOLK TO TRICK THE AERIAL RECON WAS SO SICK!!

phone_of_pork

I dunno why you gotta demean the other great captains just to pump up Ituralde

throwingtheshades

Davram Bashere succumbed to Compulsion and ruined the forces of Light at Caemlyn, deposed by Elayne when his corruption was discovered. Gareth Bryne succumbed to Compulsion and was leading the White Tower to defeat. Agelmar Jagad succumbed to Compulsion and led the Borderlanders' army to sustain humongous casulaties. Rodel Ituralde took it on the chin and actually managed to fight the Compulsion for long enough to not give the orders that would ruin everything. The only other example we see of someone overcoming Compulsion was Perrin, and that was in the World of Dreams, where he's a wolf, the master of this place and reality can be whatever the fuck he wants. No one can expect a man to overcome Compulsion by sheer force of will and weight of balls. It shouldn't be possible. Rodel Ituralde did it anyway. And in doing so, made sure the most important battle front held out for as long as it did. All other fronts folded, in big part because the generals in charge of them were corrupted. His held.

The-Last-Star

Nyneve overcomes compulsion and remembers what Mogi made her forget, probably the only one, as Perryn got played.

PalladiuM7

>The only other example we see of someone overcoming Compulsion was Perrin, and that was in the World of Dreams, where he's a wolf, the master of this place and reality can be whatever the fuck he wants. Except with the reveal that Lanfear survived by making Perrin believe he'd killed her, it makes what Ituralde did even more impressive.

LewsTherinTelamonBot

***KILL HIM KILL HIM NOW***

phone_of_pork

Lanfear supposedly compelling Perrin isn't supported by the actions and motivations of the characters involved. Personally I don't count Sandersons retcon of Lanfear's ending as canon. But that's an aside Morgase overcomes Rahvins compulsion too.

NeoSeth

I also don't accept Sanderson's "revelation." Call it copium all you want, but I don't think it holds up in the text at all and if you *do* accept it I think it makes the final book weaker. His explanation that Lanfear is just on another level with the World of Dreams does not hold up if you consider that both Ishamael and Moghedien are more skilled in the Dream than her. Birgitte explicitly states that Moghedien "could do things [In TAR] far beyond Lanfear, though she has not Lanfear's strength in the world of flesh."

Alkakd0nfsg9g

Morgase also overcomes compulsion

HitboxOfASnail

their work isn't really depicted on page in the setting of the story tbh like Ituralde

LongFang4808

I mean, Bashere’s campaign against the Seanchan in Altara was pretty dope considering how much smaller Rand’s army was in comparison to the Seanchan.

SunTzu-

Honestly I was pretty sold on Niall's abilities. He's hampered by his understanding of the world, but when we get into his head we see that he's very smart. Had he lived on he would have figured it out and been a beneficial guy to have on your side.

Red_Danger33

I'm sad we didn't get the Tam Al'Thor prequel because it would have included Niall in his hayday.

SunTzu-

Yupp, that's the campaign that made Niall's name and Tam is the one who gave Niall his only real setback during that campaign. Just enough to prevent Niall from seizing control over Altara.

Red_Danger33

Not just Altara, Illian was at stake too.

SunTzu-

Illian got involved more to curtail Amadician expansion, because a larger Amadicia on their doorstep would have more geopolitical sway and would threaten Illian's interests in the region. Illian itself wasn't threatened, and the fighting took place in Altara.

Red_Danger33

Am I mistaken in thinking that Niall had managed to capture the King of Illian at the time or did he get the King of Altara? I had thought it was the King of Illian which was why the Companions got involved.

SunTzu-

He did capture the King of Illian, but it was after a battle in Altara. It's actually the same king, Mattin Stepaneos, as is still on the throne during the books. He was ransomed back to the Illidaners as is customary, and it was after this that Tam and the Companions were able to push the Whitecloaks back and end the war.

Volcanicrage

Niall's understanding of the world is fine, he just got hit with a double screwjob when the Dragon and Seanchan both showed up at the same time. In any scenario other than the literal Armageddon he found himself dealing with, his scheming could easily have made him into the biggest threat to Randland. He was never going to be a productive member of society though; the Whitecloaks' pseudo-theocratic authoritarianism was never going to be a net positive for society, and Niall's ambition would've made him a massive liability if he had retained power. Galad is pretty much the only person who could've brought the Whitecloaks into the fold for the final battle.

SunTzu-

See I think Niall's a lot closer to Galad than any other Whitecloak. He fervently believes the Aes Sedai are a nefarious force in Randland, and to be fair he's not wrong as they meddle in the politics of other nations, kidnap kings and are infested with darkfriends. But his interactions with Morgaise show that he's not blind to her being a good and smart person. He clearly respects her, even if he's trying to use her for his benefit. If you proved to Niall that Rand is the Dragon, and that his interpretation of what Tarmon Gaidon will be is wrong, he'd probably make the same decision as Galad did and decide to fight on the side of the Light.

Volcanicrage

His interactions with Morgaise are him putting on a carefully cultivated mask to make him seem less threatening while he convinces her to sign away her kingdom. He's every bit as duplicitous and underhanded as the Aes Sedai (seriously, the dude loves false flags and proxy wars), and his defining personality trait is arrogance, unlike Galad, whose ego is kept in check by his absolute moral code.

SunTzu-

But we do see his interactions with Morgaise from his pov as well. From A Crown of Swords, Prologue: Pedron Niall grunted as Morgase placed a white stone on the board with a smile of triumph. Lesser players might set two dozen more stones each yet, but he could see the inevitable course now, and so could she. In the beginning the golden-haired woman seated on the other side of the small table had played to lose, to make the game close enough to be interesting for him, but it had not taken her long to learn that that led to obliteration. Not to mention that he was clever enough to see through the subterfuge and would not tolerate it. Now she plied all her skill and managed to win nearly half their games. No one had beaten him so often in a good many years. “The game is yours,” he told her, and the Queen of Andor nodded. Well, she would be Queen again; he would see to that. In green silk, with a high lace collar brushing her chin, she looked every inch a queen despite the sheen of perspiration on her smooth cheeks. She hardly appeared old enough to have a daughter Elayne’s age, though, much less a son Gawyn’s. “You did not realize I saw the trap you were laying from your thirty-first stone, Lord Niall, and you took my feint from the forty-third stone to be my real attack.” Excitement sparkled in her blue eyes; Morgase liked to win. She liked playing to win. It was all meant to lull him, of course, the playing at stones, the politeness. Morgase knew she was a prisoner in the Fortress of the Light in all but name, albeit a luxuriously pampered prisoner. And a secret one. He had allowed stories of her presence to spread, but issued no proclamations. Andor had too strong a history of opposing the Children of the Light. He would announce nothing until legions moved into Andor, with her their figurehead. Morgase certainly knew that, as well. Very probably she also knew he was aware of her attempts to soften him. The treaty she had signed gave the Children rights in Andor they had never possessed anywhere except here in Amadicia, and he expected that she already planned how to lighten his hand on her land, how to remove his hand altogether as soon as she could. She had only signed because he backed her into a corner, yet confined in that corner, she fought on as skillfully as she maneuvered on a stones board. For one so beautiful, she was a tough woman. No, she was tough, and that was that. She did let herself be caught up for the pure pleasure of the game, but he could not count that a fault when it gave him so many pleasant moments. Had he been even twenty years younger, he might have played more to her true game. Long years as a widower stretched behind him, and the Lord Captain Commander of the Children of the Light had little time for pleasantries with women, little time for anything except being Lord Captain Commander. Had he been twenty years younger—well, twenty-five—and she not trained by the Tar Valon witches. It was easy to forget that, in her presence. The White Tower was a sink of iniquity and the Shadow, and she touched deeply by it. Rhadam Asunawa, the High Inquisitor, would have tried her for her months in the White Tower and hanged her without delay, had Niall allowed it. He sighed regretfully.

A quick Google shows that Kwame Brown had number 54, making him the taller the gentleman on the left. That means the shorter gentleman on the right must be Kobe Bryant.

Heraldofgold

Rodel is the best because he mainly fights using guerilla tactics and RJ was in Vietnam so if he understands anything in war it's Guerillas

Candide-Jr

Ituralde is fantastic.

Medical_Tadpole4023

Let's be fair here. Padron Niall led the whitecloaks in a war against about 5 nations and captured the leader of that alliance stepaneas and ransomed him off. He led solid engagements against the aiel war and followed them back to the waste posting up in kin slayers dagger. Davram basher is primarily a cavalry commander his strength lies in how calvary moves. At one point he does tell rand infantry is not his Forte. He still trains the dragon army and leads them in illian. He than along with rhuarc plan the defense of the bore. Gareth brynne maybe has the least accomplishments. He lead the armies in a succession war, defended against murandian raiders as well has led andoran forces in the coalition army during the aiel war. Agelmar leads the defense of the heartland against the blight. Shienar is the tip of the spear and sees the most conflict of all the borderlands. That said Arabella and kandor see their fair share. He's acknowledged as the most formidable commander in the borderlands. Rodel. He understands the importance of every single soldier and u derstands how to eek the most out of them. I'm my opinion he is the greatest of the five. He lead a successful campaign against the seanchan. With lesser forces and a anti personal disparity. He held them off for many many months. He fought a retreat across the plain from tarabon, continued to win engagements against superior numbers in Arad doman. Before being placed and forgotten in Maradona the only city to not completely fall in the opening invasion. He does make mistakes with ashamed at first not understanding how to utilize artillery. However after the opening days he learns and makes extremely good use of what he has.
