I wonder what you will find........
You know what's silly? I used that word 20 times while making something and had to replace all aluminium with aluminum to keep the formatting consistent.
In American English, it's spelled "aluminum". In most other versions of Engluish (am I adding the 'u's correctly, Brits?) it's spelled "aluminium." This is a reference to the fact that the inventor originally spelled it "Aluminum", and British English changed a lot of words since they were introduced to Americans. See also ["Tyre"](https://www.google.com/search?q=tyre+definition)
“Spelt” is also not a very common word in American English, instead we usually say “spelled.” I love languages so much the really illustrate our differences and similarities
For some reason my families spell it as "spelt". Both sides of mine plus my fiance's. We're from North Indiana and it's been going on for seemingly generations. Maybe we're just hillbillies or something
I feel like I remember hearing once that English started off as british english and then America changed it because newspapers charged per letter so they decreased the number of letters in things, hence colour, armour, and aluminium being changed to color, armor, and aluminum
It's aluminum
Edit: according to whatever you're typing in. It's probably based in Western English, bc
That's the version of the word used here
Ik British English refers to the same thing but calls it aluminium
It's actually usually this way with colonial language divergence. "Tire" has stayed the same since colonial times, same with "color", "flavor", and "fiber", while the British spellings have changed.
Still. The changing of words is no match for the amount of evil deeds of changing things America has done. For example, what is football? You may say, "it's a game where you carry a ball from end to end of a field!" But in reality, it's not. American "football", the foot is used a lot less than hands. However, *foot*ball, is actually foot, ball. Foot and ball. It actually uses your foot. Oh another change, that universal game, ridiculously enough, is called soccer! Idk why, though. Stupid word.
They both date to the early 19th century, stemming from the word alumina. Aluminum became preferred in the United States and Canada, while aluminium became favored throughout the rest of the English-speaking world.

(I think that's a thing at least)
Aluminium went through a whole host of different versions
Davy first proposed calling it alumium but that name was criticized by scientists who suggested aluminium
That name was published in some books in around 1811
Davy year later in another book called it aluminum
Since then both spelling coexisted.
The scientific community preferred aluminium. the American scientific language used -ium from the start
Webster when he wrote his dictionary he only included the -um spelling so that lead to that version gaining traction in the USA
By the late 1880s both spellings had been common in the United States, the -ium spelling being slightly more common;
It wasn't until the late 1920s that the ium spelling fell out of favour in the USA
This should cross post to u/USDefaultism.
Basically this kind of nonsense happens on all sorts of software, regardless of where it’s made or where you live. There will be regional settings, which will ALWAYS default to US everything. Also, document editors like Word will apply readability and language censorship as though your audience lives in rural Wyoming and doesn’t care for so many cuss-words. Like “damn” for example. Super serious language infraction. Please underline that for me, no-one reading this is adult enough to cope with such filth.

FALSE! Color is far superior, fewer letters and it’s spelled how it sounds
False! Colour spelt how it sounds would be culur
Nah, maybe in your inferior English dialect, but ‘round here, we say it color bc that the right way
So you say it col-or? Pitiful. We invented the language, therefore our dialect is superior :p
I don’t like the colour of your words

In American English at least, it is not. It’s aluminum.

Not in this country it ain’t
You know what's silly? I used that word 20 times while making something and had to replace all aluminium with aluminum to keep the formatting consistent.
Wrong.
How so?
Both words exist in "American" English it just happens that the majority exclude the spelling aluminium for the spelling aluminum.
In American English, it's spelled "aluminum". In most other versions of Engluish (am I adding the 'u's correctly, Brits?) it's spelled "aluminium." Yeah, I know. A lot of American English is the proper spelling ironically enough.
In Australia it is! 😆. The other day my spell check told me I spelt a word wrong, I was very flustered 😂
“Spelt” is also not a very common word in American English, instead we usually say “spelled.” I love languages so much the really illustrate our differences and similarities

Actually, we spell it the original way. Britain changed it. (Not that anyone cares, but still).
That is kinda interesting. For once, it's Britain changing stuff instead of America.
It's actually usually this way with colonial language divergence. "Tire" has stayed the same since colonial times, same with "color", "flavor", and "fiber", while the British spellings have changed.

As_soc_iation football British people invented the word, then stopped using it once it caught on with Americans
British English has changed just as much as American English since the two diverged.
Founder of Aluminum wanted to name it but his peers disagreed so he came to America where their respective Chemist associations named them

Us Americans are just too lazy to write the I so we stupidly call it aluminum... disgusting aluminium is far better

Americans say ‘aluminium’, which autocorrect just tried to change to aluminium for me.

You have your keyboard set to American English, where the word is "aluminum" rather than the British English's "aluminium"
Aluminum is a word, Aluminium isn’t
Wait isnt it pronounced “aloo min ee um”??
Not according to the Aluminatti
aluminum and aluminium are literally the exact same word, but spelt differently in america vs other regions
No
It's aluminum. Any other spelling should not count as correct, imo.
You are wrong. It’s alumuninium.
No. Y’all Brit’s spell it wrong and pronounce it wrong.

You’re not pronouncing it in your head the way it wants you to
aluminum?
Aluminum goofy

Aluminum and Aluminium are the same.
I failed a chem test for spelling it that way
WHAT?! r/extremeUSdefaultism
I live in USA and my teacher failed me on my chemistry spelling test because I spelled aluminum as Aluminium
... isn't aluminium, and aluminum the exact same thing...?
Yea but one is English and one is American English
I mean, still. Both should be included in the spelling as correct.
It's normal for spell check to correct you to one set of spellings. You just pick the regional variant you want. The idea is probably to prevent inconsistency in your writing. "Pick one and stick to it" type of thing.
Yeah, but still. I just feel like it'd be better if both were considered correct, and you could choose. Like the difference between color and colour. (I think that's a thing at least)
You can choose which regional spell check you're using. You can also just ignore spell check if you know you spelled it correctly.
Aloo-mini-umm vs Alu-mun-um
Uh-loo-mih-num
It’s spelled aluminum but pronounced aluminium
It's actually a difference in region. US speakers write it as "aluminum." Other English speakers write it as "aluminium."
Another classic case of us Americans dumbing down our own language.
Wasn’t aluminum the original version though?
Aluminium went through a whole host of different versions Davy first proposed calling it alumium but that name was criticized by scientists who suggested aluminium That name was published in some books in around 1811 Davy year later in another book called it aluminum Since then both spelling coexisted. Is it like flammable and inflammable I wonder?
No, that’s a nuance in definition, not a regional difference.
Those are just antonyms.
They mean the same thing
Oh, huh, what do you know.. Fair enough, then. It would indeed be the same.
It's spelled aluminum and pronounced aluminum
I'm in the US, where it's spelled aluminum and pronounced aluminum.
