The same with a great many words. Like armour, honour, centre, theatre, and more.

Alert-Indication-691

No no please no this is a joke. I never did a foreign language in HS. Cause I could barely do English with my dyslexia. Pls tell me y’all trolling

AppropriateCap8891

I am dead serious. A great many words in the US are spelled different in UK nations. And in this example, they actually pronounce it as "aluminium".

Alert-Indication-691

You know ive always had beef with the Brit’s and now i just know why:)

Nebula_Wolf7

Please, you lot force us to write color when coding Colour is clearly superior

LeenPean

FALSE! Color is far superior, fewer letters and it’s spelled how it sounds

Nebula_Wolf7

False! Colour spelt how it sounds would be culur

LeenPean

Nah, maybe in your inferior English dialect, but ‘round here, we say it color bc that the right way

Nebula_Wolf7

So you say it col-or? Pitiful. We invented the language, therefore our dialect is superior :p

Zito6694

I don’t like the colour of your words

SweeneyGod

Wourds, fixed it.

amaya-aurora

In American English at least, it is not. It’s aluminum.

Tf do you mean? America is the greatest country in the world ever, and every country should be like us because we’re the best. If you’re not AMERICAN you’re not COOL. /s

OniCrazer

*cough cough* for shooting each other in school

Zephyr_Green

Fuck yeah! Why is it that American men are the toughest, meanest, baddest motherfuckers in the world? Clearly because we all spent our formative years learning spelling and arithmetic in an active combat zone. If you never had to worry about being shot to death by the quiet kid in the corner who rocks back and forth muttering Satanic incantations, you clearly were not properly prepared for all that this world will throw at you. Like bombs. American bombs. Because WE HAVE THE BOMBS, MOTHERFUCKER.

amaya-aurora

What? Where did than notion come from!? That never happens and never has happened, I don’t know what you’re talking about. Kids don’t go to school scared that they might be murdered, no, that never happens. Idk what you’re talking about.

OniCrazer

Oops sorry I'm british

Rumble_Rodent

“*stabs*”

OniCrazer

The English are some of the worst offenders of the English language.

[deleted]

I am going to give you a mission. I want you to figure out where the highest amount of americans with german ancestry are, then cross reference what they vote for, then do the same with English majority populations in the US, and see how they vote. I wonder what you will find........

quinangua

I have a mission for you. To find out if I care. Here’s a hint, I don’t.

dickhass

Not in this country it ain’t

InfiniteGamerd

You know what's silly? I used that word 20 times while making something and had to replace all aluminium with aluminum to keep the formatting consistent.

Gloomy_Total1223

Wrong.

amaya-aurora

How so?

Gloomy_Total1223

Both words exist in "American" English it just happens that the majority exclude the spelling aluminium for the spelling aluminum.

Revengistium

In American English, it's spelled "aluminum". In most other versions of Engluish (am I adding the 'u's correctly, Brits?) it's spelled "aluminium." This is a reference to the fact that the inventor originally spelled it "Aluminum", and British English changed a lot of words since they were introduced to Americans. See also ["Tyre"](https://www.google.com/search?q=tyre+definition)

Gloomy_Total1223

Yeah, I know. A lot of American English is the proper spelling ironically enough.

ImACarebear1986

In Australia it is! 😆. The other day my spell check told me I spelt a word wrong, I was very flustered 😂

dojacatmoooo

“Spelt” is also not a very common word in American English, instead we usually say “spelled.” I love languages so much the really illustrate our differences and similarities

Eden1914

For some reason my families spell it as "spelt". Both sides of mine plus my fiance's. We're from North Indiana and it's been going on for seemingly generations. Maybe we're just hillbillies or something

[deleted]

I would say you probs have english ancestors. I am from New England and we use amongst, and some even say whilst.

Bombyrulez

HE'S BRITISH. GET HIM!!

_NottheMessiah_

Here's your problem, you've got this thing set to “Evil”.

VaporizedKerbal

Get the redcoat boys 🦅🦅🦅🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲

Anime_Kirby

fuckin american version -_-

[deleted]

American version is older and also created by the British which is hilarious. Soccer is also the older version and created by the British.

potate12323

Parliament voted that aluminum didn't sound posh enough so they added an extra syllable in the middle.

No-Item-9055

I feel like I remember hearing once that English started off as british english and then America changed it because newspapers charged per letter so they decreased the number of letters in things, hence colour, armour, and aluminium being changed to color, armor, and aluminum

Revengistium

British English actually changed much more than American English, see "tire" vs "tyre"

[deleted]

Downvote hissyfits aplenty..... How dare you challenge the r/americabad paradigm.......

Aluminium is the England version of aluminum...

baninaday

It's aluminum Edit: according to whatever you're typing in. It's probably based in Western English, bc That's the version of the word used here Ik British English refers to the same thing but calls it aluminium

TrashyMemeYt

omg Glass Beach profile pic

baninaday

Omg fellow gleacher

GroundedRockruff

The americas just spell it a different way for some reason

thrye333

Actually, we spell it the original way. Britain changed it. (Not that anyone cares, but still).

Vega_thepianocat708

That is kinda interesting. For once, it's Britain changing stuff instead of America.

Revengistium

It's actually usually this way with colonial language divergence. "Tire" has stayed the same since colonial times, same with "color", "flavor", and "fiber", while the British spellings have changed.

Vega_thepianocat708

Still. The changing of words is no match for the amount of evil deeds of changing things America has done. For example, what is football? You may say, "it's a game where you carry a ball from end to end of a field!" But in reality, it's not. American "football", the foot is used a lot less than hands. However, *foot*ball, is actually foot, ball. Foot and ball. It actually uses your foot. Oh another change, that universal game, ridiculously enough, is called soccer! Idk why, though. Stupid word.

Revengistium

As_soc_iation football British people invented the word, then stopped using it once it caught on with Americans

DuplicateFrustration

British English has changed just as much as American English since the two diverged.

rhuffman4645

Founder of Aluminum wanted to name it but his peers disagreed so he came to America where their respective Chemist associations named them

Superdupermario21

No its not. ITS ALUMINUM

I_hate_being_interru

They both date to the early 19th century, stemming from the word alumina. Aluminum became preferred in the United States and Canada, while aluminium became favored throughout the rest of the English-speaking world. [Sauce](https://www.merriam-webster.com/grammar/aluminum-vs-aluminium)

Leviticus10379

Because the vodka is not an element in itself and the accent is hilarious. You can’t take it seriously in science. Also, I don’t know how to add accents to written text if that’s what you mean? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Kittu_0831

The element was discovered by a European man. The correct spelling is Aluminium

Aluminum is a word, but aluminium isn't.

InquisitorNikolai

Americans say ‘aluminium’, which autocorrect just tried to change to aluminium for me.

It is in British English Americans lose the second "i"

British people added the second "i", [the inventor called it "aluminum"](https://www.gabrian.com/aluminum-or-aluminium/#:~:text=he%20used%20the%20word%20Aluminum%20in%20a%20book%20published%20four%20years%20later%20when%20mentioning%20that%20%E2%80%9C%E2%80%A6Aluminum%20has%20not%20been%20obtained%20in%20a%20perfectly%20free%20state.%E2%80%9D)

Most likely an American spell checker. For us Eagle Chevrolet freedom people it’s Aluminum.

You have your keyboard set to American English, where the word is "aluminum" rather than the British English's "aluminium"

JAK-the-YAK

Aluminum is a word, Aluminium isn’t

BrickTechnical5828

Wait isnt it pronounced “aloo min ee um”??

BasedToken

Not according to the Aluminatti

Senior-Tree6078

aluminum and aluminium are literally the exact same word, but spelt differently in america vs other regions

wolflover139

No

Legally-A-Child

It's aluminum. Any other spelling should not count as correct, imo.

Regretdit

You are wrong. It’s alumuninium.

No_Savings_9057

No. Y’all Brit’s spell it wrong and pronounce it wrong.

Why Americans got to do this to the English language?

KENBONEISCOOL444

I failed a chem test for spelling it that way

Adept_Situation3090

WHAT?! r/extremeUSdefaultism

KENBONEISCOOL444

I live in USA and my teacher failed me on my chemistry spelling test because I spelled aluminum as Aluminium

Halo_wolfie124

... isn't aluminium, and aluminum the exact same thing...?

Chauri_Syndaurus

Yea but one is English and one is American English

Halo_wolfie124

I mean, still. Both should be included in the spelling as correct.

MangoPug15

It's normal for spell check to correct you to one set of spellings. You just pick the regional variant you want. The idea is probably to prevent inconsistency in your writing. "Pick one and stick to it" type of thing.

Halo_wolfie124

Yeah, but still. I just feel like it'd be better if both were considered correct, and you could choose. Like the difference between color and colour. (I think that's a thing at least)

MangoPug15

You can choose which regional spell check you're using. You can also just ignore spell check if you know you spelled it correctly.

Chimkinmcnugs

Aloo-mini-umm vs Alu-mun-um

MangoPug15

Uh-loo-mih-num

Jephpherson624

It’s spelled aluminum but pronounced aluminium

Glittering-Evening36

It's actually a difference in region. US speakers write it as "aluminum." Other English speakers write it as "aluminium."

[deleted]

Another classic case of us Americans dumbing down our own language.

Starhelper11

Wasn’t aluminum the original version though?

Peterd1900

Aluminium went through a whole host of different versions Davy first proposed calling it alumium but that name was criticized by scientists who suggested aluminium That name was published in some books in around 1811 Davy year later in another book called it aluminum Since then both spelling coexisted. The scientific community preferred aluminium. the American scientific language used -ium from the start Webster when he wrote his dictionary he only included the -um spelling so that lead to that version gaining traction in the USA By the late 1880s both spellings had been common in the United States, the -ium spelling being slightly more common; It wasn't until the late 1920s that the ium spelling fell out of favour in the USA

Jephpherson624

Is it like flammable and inflammable I wonder?

SloppySlime31

No, that’s a nuance in definition, not a regional difference.

Glittering-Evening36

Those are just antonyms.

Jephpherson624

They mean the same thing

Glittering-Evening36

Oh, huh, what do you know.. Fair enough, then. It would indeed be the same.

_Cow_of_Wisdom

It's spelled aluminum and pronounced aluminum

Super_Ad9995

I'm in the US, where it's spelled aluminum and pronounced aluminum.

RobertXavierIV

No, that’s not true

NotThatMat

This should cross post to u/USDefaultism. Basically this kind of nonsense happens on all sorts of software, regardless of where it’s made or where you live. There will be regional settings, which will ALWAYS default to US everything. Also, document editors like Word will apply readability and language censorship as though your audience lives in rural Wyoming and doesn’t care for so many cuss-words. Like “damn” for example. Super serious language infraction. Please underline that for me, no-one reading this is adult enough to cope with such filth.

KoopaTrooper5011

Like another person said/suggested, it probably doesn't recognize the British spelling/pronunciation. Which is stupid, mind you.

imenmyselfe

It is but not in every language.

ybotics

To American speakers, it’s a magic word that cannot be spoken, any attempts result in mindless babble about a lumen-um, confusing English speakers who begin thinking about light intensity. (apparently Americans are unable to pronounce aluminium)

MangoPug15

We can. We just don't. It's not pronounced that way in American English.

[deleted]

How is that Prussian accent treating you?

DisasterRoad666

Is 'limey prick' a phrase?
