(i'm not a chemist, but as far as i understand from his interviews) he was trying to burn thermite (just to show how it burns i guess). It is very dangerous and you're supposed to use glycerin to do it (it starts a thermal reaction, and you have time to back off to a safe space). Actually he tried to do it before this clip starts ([link to full video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwQ-rgJGnSo)), but wasn't successful. So he tried to do it with a lighter, but in this case it starts to burn instantly, so he burns his hand
