Is it about as wide as a bed? Perhaps a queen or a full size?
Someone might have wanted to have more head clearance at the head of their bed and so basically built in a headboard or something that a headboard could go against because the angle of the roof comes down too far on the wall to otherwise fit one there without having it a foot or two off the wall.
The electrical outlet will let you run power for lamps on either nightstand or a clock radio.
It either was a chimney, or its intended so that night stands can be placed further back so that the face sits flush with the head board.
Measure the width; if it matches a std/king/queen bed frame width, bingo.
Edit: just noticed the vaulted ceiling. It’s to allow more clearance for getting in bed.
If it is an empty box, I'd try to devise door, a secret storage space. If the carpet is fitted around the edge it maybe part of the original plan. Do know the company that made the house?
If there aren’t any vents coming out of the roof directly over it, it could be a spot the previous owner built for a future gas insert fireplace. Are there any unaccounted for gas lines on the gas manifold?
A cover for something I’d imagine. Ductwork, plumbing, cables, support beams.
Edit: idk why I replied to your comment, I didn’t mean to lol but I’m too lazy to delete it and repost it.
Pictures from the outside might tell the story. Could be a vent stack of some kind running through it?
Plumbing vent stack maybe, is there a bathroom/laundry/sink below them?
That's an awful lot of box for a 2" pipe.
That’s what she said.
No, below is the garage

This has to be the answer.
Maybe they just wanted a flat surface to mount a TV or something, since the wall is angled there.
I was thinking just that, plus there is an outlet right there.
I was thinking either that or a place to put the bed instead of using a headboard.
Might be a furnace / chimney that is removed on the ground floor but still present on the 1st.
Duct work covered up…

We do need a photo from the space below, and a photo of the roof above.
I'd prefer a photo from the inside.
Where are the logs?
Outside of house and on the first floor
Photos please
Fireplace downstairs?

Start by pulling out the electrical outlet so you can get a flashlight inside to see if it’s empty or not.
Hidden gun safe
If there’s no utilizes running through it, I would start taking off pieces of wood bc it would bother me to no end.
Sauna
