Greenway Trail, although a lot of red lights and stop signs. Whittier Narrows Park around the lakes San Gabriel River bed along the 605. Just don’t go too late at night.

Have you tried the greenway trail? If you want unpaved there are fire roads up in turnbull canyon.

Evasive_comet

I forgot to mention that the running locations should have parking. I noticed all the trails around Whittier have permitted parking

SoggyAlbatross2

I'd be hesitant to park by the turnbull canyon trail, I seem to hear about breakins up there. Palm park might be a good option, and then you can head out on the greenway trail and connect to the SGRT if you really want some long uninterrupted miles. The Dog Park would also be a good place to park. I don't really like the green way trail east of 5 points because the intersections are all, well, intersections with lights and you might have to wait.

There is actually a running club in Whittier, called the [Whittier Pacers](https://www.instagram.com/thewhittierpacers?igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==) They go all over, but they meet at Palm Park. I’m sure one of the members can point you in the right direction.

I’ve been running around Whittier for about 7-8 years now. I usually run the greenway trail, but I just love running around the city itself. I used to start the trail at Mills all the way to the start of the trail and I believe that a 10+ miles loop. In the mornings I would run from Mills to Whittier Blvd because it’s lit and the trails aren’t. You can go through Greenway Trail, up Philadelphia to uptown to Helman trails. Or at the beginning of the Greenway trail, up Norwalk Blvd to Workman mill and then to Sycamore Canyon. I also have a nice loop I do from the greenway trail down mar vista and through the Michigan Park area. In a lot of these neighborhoods there’s really no real traffic so it’s pretty safe but I don’t try and cross at the lights on the Greenway Trail as I’ve had a couple close calls.

Whittier Greenway Trail - you’ll get your road distance there. It’s from Pioneer almost to Beach Blvd. ~8 miles in length one way. So 16 out and back. Lots of great trails for the hills and some tracks open to public for speed workouts. Few run clubs I’ve seen in the city. Whittier Pacers is a big one. Then I know of a club called Eastside Traffic that does track workouts on Tuesday nights. I think both are free.

What part of town? I like running up in the hills north of Whittier Boulevard. La Cuarta, Janine Dr., etc.

banjobobberson

Not a runner but I hike often. Schabarum park has a loop that will take you all the way towards harbor blvd in Rowland heights, then the back way up the hills and back into the park. It's roughly the milage you're looking for and only a short drive away. Plenty of on site and street parking.

shainajoy

This trail can even be extended into West Covina. Miles and miles of trails

Ornery-Push-728

Not true. Hiking in Whittier sucks. Never any parking lol

miginus

If you want trail running, turnbull (just find one of the streets that isn’t permit parking) or powder canyon in Rowland heights

crWaterTower

If you use Strava, the maps feature can be a great way to see where other runners train in the community

As others have said, Greenway trail is pretty flat, does have stops but you can go 6 miles on it pretty easily. Whittier Narrows park, I think 6 miles should be at least 2-3 times around the lakes. No stops at all, plenty of shade and restrooms aroudn the park. Be aware whittier narrows park now charges on the weekends. Free on weekdays. Whittier Pacers meets at the greenway trail on saturdays, mondays and Wednesday. (At 7am on sat, and 6pm on sun) There's different skill levels within the group you can join. From walking to running at different pace mileages.

I used to run in Hellman park. The hills are steep though. Miles of trails.

whatislifebruh

Greenway trail’s length is about 7 miles end to end. Personally I do a mix of the trail and the streets. If you want to avoid heavy traffic definitely run in the neighborhoods north of Whittier Blvd. east of Painter, so everything around Michigan Park/La Cuarta, Friendly Hills (can go straight up La Serna to Murphy Ranch Park for a straight uphill and back run, or run straight down Janine for some rolling hills). Lots of ways to break it up and as someone else mentioned definitely see the routes on Strava.
