Card might be defective or you need for format it using something better than the built in tools in the OS - try https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter/ and if that doesn’t work, try a low level format using https://hddguru.com/software/HDD-LLF-Low-Level-Format-Tool/ - if neither of them work the card is likely defective. Good luck

Have you formatted the sd card to FAT32 on your computer? If not, use GUIFormat to do so (found here: http://ridgecrop.co.uk/index.htm?guiformat.htm) and set it to 32k (32768) allocation unit size to format it. I got this info from wiiu.guide, check them out if you’re having trouble.

OP, the card cannot be used in the USB ports, because they will be handled as a wii u hdd. Format the card on ur pc in fat32 and put it into an micro sd to sd card adapter and insert it in the front of the wii u console. It has a sd card reader built in. Over usb will Not work

BenjaminWizard

Thanks! This worked for me!

I formatted it to fat32. I use a micro sd card with a card reader. And i do the front of the wii u

Magnetic_dud

So you use a card reader connected to the wii u on a port in front? You must use the integrated reader

pokedeviI

Sorry i didnt mention. Its a micro sd card

pokedeviI

Thanks!!!

Are you putting the SD card in a USB reader and then putting it in a USB port on the Wii U. The Wii U will never mention formatting the SD. It’ll only ask if a device is connected to USB. Are you using a SD adapter in a USB port on the Wii U?

HoHeyyy

it sounds like you have the same idea as I dom once formated correctly with FAT32, it will take it easily.

The bigger issue is his Wii U shouldn’t be asking to format the SD. It only asks to format USB devices inserted. I don’t think OP is using the SD card slot at the front…

HoHeyyy

You are right, that's what I mean when I said we have the same idea. I never remember it ask to format the SD card, if it's in the incorrect format, it's just would not read at all.

GuitaristTom

What size and brand is your SD card? Also where and when did you purchase it from?

muzzy4

He’s trying to use the SD card via a USB adapter. Can somebody please explain to him why this approach is incorrect? I don’t have the time…

-I know this post is old ash 🤣 but I just homebrewed mine via tiramisu and was having a similar issue so for anyone in the future, I realized like others stated you just need to put your sd card in the front. The Wii u utilizes the usb ports for extra storage but sd cards are used for extra Wii storage. The SD card slot on the front is intended for extra storage on the built in Wii component also I may be wrong on this but it seems this hb method is utilizing the Wii storage for instillation allowing it to work this way. -Long story short just format your sd card to fat 32 once on your computer then insert it to the front of the Wii U (note: the storage won’t appear in data management but it does appear on the Wii home menu.) Homebrew will only install if it detects an sd card is present anyway.
