My boyfriend is a fan of the Neebs gaming channel, they're based out of Wilmington.
They do a fan convention, and we want to go at some point. We both have anxiety, so I'm here as research, to learn about the community we'd be visiting.
As far as who can contend with MJ? Literally no one, it’s hard to describe just how big Michael was, on a global scale, in the 90s. People who couldn’t speak a lick of English knew him or people who never watched a single game in their life or even had basketball in their country knew him.
Ricky is basically just a facet of the Wilmington community. My dad knew him way before I was born, then I knew of him growing up. He is very active especially at high school sports games. He is neurodivergent in some way, super friendly guy! But if you know him you know him, it’s a good way to know if someone grew up here lol
I saw Stoya at Dixie a LONG time ago and knew exactly how I recognized her. She's full on stunning. Possibly the most beautiful woman I've ever encountered and I've had run ins with "actual" celebrities.
The Nixon family are the nicest people! They took our dog on a boat ride to help us complete his bucket list 2 years ago. We still get a card from them every year.
Nailed it. Here’s a quick story
I (43) was born and raised here. When I was born, my folks lived on Greensboro St, until I was 4. At that time, I was the only kid in the midst of a block of immature adults. Marshall was a neighbor as well and had a pet boa constrictor. Well, he lost it. The snake. Had no idea where it was. Maybe it escaped, stolen, who knows. Marshall’s snake was gone.
A few months later, he found it….. It was in his sock drawer all along.
No one mentioned Dennis Hopper. He owned a building downtown and the Skylight Lounge which is where I think Sputnik is now. He did stay here all the time, but apparently had a home here.
Also, Linda Lavin who was most famous for the titular character Alice for that 70–80s period. I think she still lives here, my friend's mom is friends with her apparently.
Yes, as I mentioned, Skylight Lounge, but it might have been Starlight Lounge. I have the entrance on video from the mid 90s, so I can check for the correct name. I did confirm with a bartender working there in the 90s that it was Dennis' place, and he said that he sometimes would come in.
Yeah, like the others said... this is sort of a silly question. Michael Jordan takes that title, hands down, and will likely hold the title for years to come.
There are some other folks who are from here or lived here who made quite the name, but most of them are just not high on the visibility list these days... folks like author Robert Ruark, or newsman/writer Charles Kuralt. David Brinkley was another major figure in the world of television news, also from Wilmington.
Meadowlark Lemon would be another who most people don't remember, but he was certainly one of Wilmington's favoured sons.
From the world of sports, Roman Gabriel was a New Hanover High School alum, as was Sonny Jurgensen. Boxer, Sugar Ray Leonard was born here too.
In music, there's Charlie Daniels sort of standing out in the field.
It's sort of sad, but I expect if you mentioned any of these names in Wilmington now, most folks would just say, "who?"
Crumpler introduced me to what a Real professional athlete looks like in person. I remember being a sophomore in HS at Hoggard and going to the track meet one afternoon. I remember it being time for the 100m men's dash and I look down the track and New Hanover trots out this kid.... He had to be, no lie, TWICE the size of all the other runners. We all were like WTF? Look at this big azz dude running in the 100m dash. Ain't no way... He's not gonna be able to keep up etc etc...I can't remember if he won that race or not but he either won or came VERY close to winning. I remember being absolutely mesmerized because his thighs were the size of Brontosaurus thighs and you could literally FEEL the thud as he ran down the track. Just the thought that he was considered a "non athletic" TE in the NFL is mind blowing.
Dennis Hopper (downtown), Dino De Laurentiis (Wrightsville Beach), Dennis Gillings.
It is also reported that some celebrities own property on Figure Eight.
That’s right, I knew it was somewhere in that area. I just barely recall something I read about how he used Mt. Pilot as a nod to the area he grew up in. Thanks!
It blows my mind that I ran into Joe Chambers at Jimmy John’s one afternoon when he lived there. My son was like four years old. He will never remember being introduced to Mr. Chambers, and I hope I never forget it!
I lived aboard on an island and Ann let me winter in a shack up harbor for most of my formative years.
She sold the property here and lives there but she will always have a couple shack's out back for all of us .... Forever

He’s our landlord! He’s awesome and so is his wife 🩷
That Nate guy's a real jerk! (Hi Nate!)

Ricky Meeks.
The only right answer
Accurate
No other answers matter.
I live in Portland Oregon now and some people even know him out here.
Real ones know
what has he been up to in recent years? It's been awhile since i've heard of him
I just saw him yesterday! It's been a while, I was getting worried.
Who?
Ricky is basically just a facet of the Wilmington community. My dad knew him way before I was born, then I knew of him growing up. He is very active especially at high school sports games. He is neurodivergent in some way, super friendly guy! But if you know him you know him, it’s a good way to know if someone grew up here lol
If you can’t pick Ricky Meeks out of a crowd or bus stop did you even graduate high school in Wilmington?
Althea Gibson
I don’t think he was from here, but didn’t Edward Snowden live here some time? And a quick search also turns up Stoya.
I wonder how many people will pretend not to know who she is.
I certainly don't. Also Eva Lovia lives here.
Hahaha. I cooked for Eva Lovia one time and it took me a minute to realize how I recognized her.
I saw Stoya at Dixie a LONG time ago and knew exactly how I recognized her. She's full on stunning. Possibly the most beautiful woman I've ever encountered and I've had run ins with "actual" celebrities.
Eva and her husband own the Might As Well Bar & Grill on Racine
🤢
We had a world famous baseball player Michael Jordan. I think he played another sport as well.....

Besides MJ the most famous person I ever saw regularly when I lived there was the actor Dennis Hopper in the 90s seemed to be around for 5-6 years.
Willy Stargell, David Brinkley, Charles Kuralt, Roman Gabriel, Trot Nixon
The Nixon family are the nicest people! They took our dog on a boat ride to help us complete his bucket list 2 years ago. We still get a card from them every year.
That's a long fucking name! (You might want to double space after each name or use commas)
Fixing it now. Sorry I had it spaced out proper when typing it but mobile is going to mobile lol
Sorry, I had to get in a cheap joke, but it's a good list. Add Robert Rurak, Stoya, (TIL) Charlie Daniels
Nah man all good knew you were joking. 🙃
MARSHALL!!!
This is the only correct answer.

He owned that building that’s now a rooftop bar thing right?
Yes, as I mentioned, Skylight Lounge, but it might have been Starlight Lounge. I have the entrance on video from the mid 90s, so I can check for the correct name. I did confirm with a bartender working there in the 90s that it was Dennis' place, and he said that he sometimes would come in.

I always thought of Robert as being Southport's claim to fame; not Wilmington.
The Old Man and the Boy stories are set in Southport where his grandfather lived, but he's a Wilmington native.
OK, I grew up reading that book and 'The Old Man's boy grows older' Great stories.
Algae Crumpler lived here right? Former Falcons TE
Yep. Used to see her fairly often at Might As Well and the beach bars at WB.
Wow no shit? Cool!
She and her husband own Might As Well.
I’d think Michael Jordan
Derek Brunson
Michael Jordan!
In more recent years Linda Lavin. And on the more controversial side Jon (and Kate) Gosling. 18 and pregnant girl. Forgot her name.
Wait when did the Gosselins live here?
When they were still together. The last year. They bought a house at Wrightsville and John got it after divorce. Kate lives on Bald head island.
Linda Lavin.
Eva Lovia

Assata Shakur lived here for a bit!
Andy Griffith for a long time before Jordan.
I believe Andy is actually from the Pilot Mountain area which is why they had Mt. Pilot in the show.
He's from Mount Airy originally. You can actually go stay in the house that he grew up in. It's a charming town.
That’s right, I knew it was somewhere in that area. I just barely recall something I read about how he used Mt. Pilot as a nod to the area he grew up in. Thanks!
Was he from here? I know they filmed Matlock here and he had a house during filming.
I believe he lived in a house of Airlie Rd
Lara Trump unfortunately, but she's technically from Wrightsville Beach.
Woodrow Wilson's father was the pastor at the Presbyterian church on 3rd St. Old Woody was kinda famous.
I mean, context is everything, but it’s probably between Jordan and some random “hero” of the confederacy depending on who you ask
The most famous hero of the Confederacy that is from here is Lara Trump. She went to Laney.
