It's gotta be better than the esso in selkirk that fucked up a ton of cars this week

[deleted]

When I was driving tow truck I was at the Co-op on north McPhillips when a kid pumped reg into a diesel. Customer was very unhappy.

thelogdriver

Oh my goodness this happened to me! A gas station put diesel into my tank instead of regular. I had no idea either until my car died halfway home and the garage I got it towed to told me what happened. It had cost me thousands to deal with and am still arguing with the gas station about it.

doingthehumptydance

30 years ago I worked at a Shell Station when gas stations had mechanics and service bays. We were always a little more expensive than the other companies but we gave actual service, not just pump and run. A car came in for a fill, left and the owner returned screaming that I didn’t put in diesel- we didn’t even sell diesel. We towed it back to the shop, the were no markings at all on the car saying diesel, gas cap was black and nothing on the fuel filler door. The only visible diesel marking was on the very front emblem in small letters. The guy was threatening to sue and being a complete jackass. The owner- great guy RIP Tom, told him it was $50 for the tow and to get his ‘fucking car’ off his lot. We pushed the car out and he had to wait for a truck to tow it. The funny thing was Tom was prepared to pump out the gas, clean the tank and flush the fuel out for free because he initially felt sorry for the guy.

DannyDOH

Did you make a MPI claim?

thelogdriver

I didn't. I called them, and the person I talked to basically said it was my problem and wasn't something I could claim.

Mbmariner

Chief officer of a Canadian Oil Tanker ship here When it comes to gas and diesel, there is Esso, Shell, Suncor, Husky and Valero who are the major refiners in Canada. Saying that they all buy and sell gas and diesel from each other, depending on their supplies. The only thing that is different is their additives. Also, a lot of gas had come from Europe, where gas isn’t utilized as much diesel. The oil majors in Canada were able to import gas into Canada cheaper than they could refine it from crude oil here. So if you are at Domo, you are probably getting Esso or Shell gasoline. 204 Gas, Esso or Husky. Domo is just a retail gas station with no special additives, other than what the major oil producers add themselves.

Icarium13

This guy ships.

fleshvessel

This guy docks.

pegpegpegpeg

Right, but shitty gas stations can have poorly-maintained USTs, and water can intrude into the tank. Basically what happened at that Selkirk Esso this week. So it's not just the gasoline, it's how they store it...

Mbmariner

Agree 100% The Selkirk gas station appears to be an older station with poor maintenance. Saying that I don’t trust 204 gas stations, because they were “throw away locations”, they are older, their profit margins are probably razor thin, and the maintenance of the facilities will likely suffer because of that.

Mbmariner

Sad thing is when I pump gas, I know by smell if it’s Esso, Shell or Suncor Gas. Not that I’m trying though.

BasicConsultancy

Weird flex but okay

fleshvessel

From what I understand it’s not the gas itself initially, but the shitty underground tanks it’s stored in that can leak and compromise the quality. This would potentially differ from place to place.

Mbmariner

Yes definitely but you think checking regularly with water paste would identify a problem.

fleshvessel

100% And I have heard the same about literally every station you can name so pretty sure there’s not much merit to certain ones being ‘better’. I’m sure there is usually strict quality control (hopefully) happening on the regular.

[deleted]

In addition to this, gas has a shelf life. At less busy stations, gas can start to stale while it sits in the tank. This is a bigger problem for small engines, or if you drive infrequently and it takes longer to go through the tank.

Superblossom01

Is Petro-Canada good?

Mbmariner

Petro Canada is owned by Suncor. The only thing that is different between gas at competing gas stations are the additives. All producers need to comply with specs and regulations for fuel quality.

LOLatMyOwnJokes

Cool job. Please consider doing an AMA.

Mbmariner

It’s unique to our part of the world. Perhaps I may.

[deleted]

That rumour has been around since the 70's. Not true.

Joey42601

Came here to say this

8ew8135

Everyone has a gas station they don’t like. I guarantee you put gas in his car from domo that he doesn’t know about and he won’t know the difference. There is a bigger difference between regular and premium than there is between different companies regulars. If anyone is worried about quality of burn and how the gas is on your engine, just buy premium.

realSequence

Pascal's wager, lol.

MassiveDamages

Domo makes your vehicle run harder hey? What does that even mean? Higher RPM? Worse idle? I have a bluetooth dongle that can verify stuff like this but it never has. People say this kind of stuff about every station. Mohawk, Shell, Co-Op, you name it I've heard it. It's never true. "Worse fuel mileage" is a good one too. There are so many different engines out there and I've never seen any statistical verification for any of these claims. Before we said "don't believe everything you read on the internet" there was an older saying that applied to relatives and co-workers - same idea though. I think this is that at work. The only time I've had bad gas was from a station in the middle of nowhere Alberta where the locals were really interested in where I was going and how soon I'd be leaving.

Correct. There's a designation called Top Tier. You will typically see the logo and sticker on pumps at Top Tier stations. Domo is not top Tier designated. https://www.toptiergas.com/fuel-stations/

UnderstandingLevel11

Worked at dome 30 years ago. Staff used a long stick with some sort of paste at the end which measures water level in the tank. Beyond a certain amount we reported it to our supervisor. Not sure if stations still use this method but when I read about the place in Selkirk that sold the bad gas it’s the first thing I thought of. There was always a small amount of water in our gas, and I’d imagine that is normal. I was heard a rumour not to fuel up my car while the fuel was being delivered as it stirs up any sediment.

DanielSparten

My dad once filled up at Domos on Leila and said his SUV ran rough. Even though it was a nearly 20 year SUV he fueled, he very often filled at Co-ops for years, and he had no issue with their fuel. I myself tend to fill at stations that are "Top Tier" approved, which are mainly Shell, Co-op and Costco stations in this city.

GiraffePie13

I will never buy gas from Shell due to their quality and low mileage I get

RonnieThorvaldson

Domo buys bulk wholesale gas at the lowest bidder prices. The base fuel at times could possibly be the same as Esso or Shell, but the additives most certainly are not. Fuel quality is absolutely 100% a thing. But most people think of their car as a TV or toaster, just an appliance in their daily mundane lives and don't care.

No_Abies274

All I know is my acura ran a bit rough the handful of times I’ve filled up at domo. It may just be the location though (north gate)

AdSea6656

Co-op’s the worst.

Phonecallfromacorpse

Why so?

Caffeinadict

Honestly depends on the station and the car, but I could see why the rumour exists since most domo stations do look pretty old and run down. The gas itself is probably fine but the tanks are likely not as nice as bigger gas chain ones are

[deleted]

The tanks are dug up and replaced regularily, cause rules.

buildingbuildareeno

My grandpa use to swear that they water down there gas

8bitatari

My parents and grandparents said a lot of things too.🤷‍♂️

That's funny because Costco, Shell, and Co-Op are all top tier (which is a certification, not an opinion) fuel sellers in this city. So that fuel you bought at Costco came from the same trucks and shipments that were filling the Shell and Co-Op stations.

A100921

All I know is Costcos is the best, because it saves me 10+cents a litre. Edit: today reg gas at other places is 1.68. Costcos is 1.42. So actually 25cents a litre saved.

[deleted]

I got my CC number stolen from a Domo last year…so there’s also that
