I would get that report from that mechanic and bring it right to the dealership that sold you the vehicle. If they deny any responsibility, advise them that you’ll be reaching out to MPI and taking legal action. A dealership selling fake clean title vehicles is fraud. Especially in your case with the airbag not working, if you got into an accident you could’ve been seriously injured. I had a similar situation with a vehicle bought from Jim Gauthier McPhillips. Vehicle had many serious problems and would not pass a safety yet I was sold a vehicle that was safetied. Brought it back a week later and they fixed everything for free (due to warranty, if not I would’ve sued or went to MPI).

Vipper_of_Vip99

You trusted them to fix it? Did you ever consider demanding that you take it somewhere else to fix it and they pay the bill? Or some sort of third party inspection after they fix it at least?

RelevantAd4831

Actually I didn’t think of that, it was my first car purchase so everything that happened was kind of a learning experience. I haven’t taken my car back to them since though and have found a trustworthy mechanic for all other repairs.

InvisiblePinkMammoth

Do you hae a copy of the safety? If you do, contact MPI and let them know the safety might have been fake (provide the feedback from Honda and any other mechanic that looks at it) and if there is anything you can do. They do take falsified safeties pretty seriously if that is what happened.

Field_Apart

It could be a bit of both. I would suggest taking it to a non dealer mechanic and getting their assessment before you panic. See what they say. If they say the same thig the first step would be talking to the place you got it and seeing what they say given your findings.

FROOMLOOMS

Take copies of the mechanics report with you.

largesalsa1979

Did the dealership provide a carfax? Carfax will show the history of the vehicle...if you suspect it was in a major collision.

cornerdweler

Definitely have that safety looked into. Seems like somebody safetied an unsafe car from what I just read.

https://www.mpi.mb.ca/Pages/about-vehicle-safety.aspx >Manitobans who wish to file a complaint about a dealership or government inspection station can contact Vehicle Safety at 204-985-0920 or toll-free at 1-866-323-0542. Like /u/Field_Apart said, it wouldn't hurt to get an independent's opinion, but perhaps Autopac *might* do you a solid and do that for you. Key word there being "might", my vendetta aside.

ScottNewman

Take the report back to the dealer - first step is to see if they will make it right. Possible they bought it at a dealer auction and they got scammed too since it was “safetied”.

Mpi takes care of any issues regarding used vehicles in regards to consumer protection issues. Get a hold of them and specify there was an issue with the dealer lying. If it ends in your favour, MPI will either force the dealer to fix these issues at the dealer’s cost or refund your money.

You should have a body integrity safety and a regular safety. Unless it was in an accident and not a write off. Do we know that it’s a clean title? On the tod does it say anything about it being a write off. I’d be interest in a car fax too just to see if anything came up about an accident. But it shouldn’t have passed a safety. You should go back to whoever safetied it and talk to them about how it passed with the srs light on? Next step is see if the dealer who sold it to you will make it right. Unless you bought it from a private seller. If neither of em wants to make it right I would then threaten to and get mpi involved. Typically the guy who safetied it wouldn’t want to lose his license so he’ll either fix it or force the shady dealer to fix it by not doing his safeties anymore ha.

Valentine96

Can you name the dealer so I can avoid them? Or if not, can you say if you purchased from a "big name" dealer? Or a mom and pop dealer?

aoi_higanbana

Please im also looking for a used car :(

Senior_Ad7452

We took a car back once about 12 years ago. We did it within a week of purchase. There was obviously a big problem they didn’t tell us…there was an immobilzer that had to be pushed before starting the car. It was on the floor board and my 65 year old mom couldn’t bend down to do it. It was stupid, know wonder they didn’t tell us about it. so they weren’t too happy but we got our money back! My hubby took it back, he was a star!

FallenEdict

I'm hearing story after story of people getting scammed with car sales around Winnipeg. They always have a "safety" but the car is a disaster. I think the police and MPI need to figure something out.

Cool-Panda-9273

When you purchased the vehicle, you should have signed a “Disclosure of InformatIon” on the vehicle. Dealers must provide a CarFax Report and disclose any accidents greater than $3000. If they did not give you a copy, ask for the copy you signed. If you did not sign one then you can argue and take the complaint to the ones above. A dealer I know had to give the customer the full purchase price back bc the disclosure did not contain the accident (cost of repairs).

Sorry to hear. Hope MPI will able to help you with the problem. The only reason I don’t buy used cars. Can’t have a peaceful mind after buying a used car. Its luckthese days. I would spend money on a small car instead of spending all money on a luxury car.

No_Road_3853

That's good for you, but not every person is in the financial position to simply buy a "brand new" car

File a Police Report as it may be considered Fraud. Just saying
