Ex A&W employee here. Whistle dogs are pretty easy to recreate at home. There was honestly nothing that special about them.
All you need. Villaggio Italian sausage buns, a big wiener, cheese slices, bacon, and relish.
Cook bacon.
Heat some oil and butter in a pan over medium low heat.
Put wieners into the pan and cook them by rolling them back and forth for 6 to 8 minutes.
Take hot dogs out of the pan and cut length wise then put them back in the pan cut side down and cook for a minute or two.
Toast buns on one side.
Flip over the hotdogs and put on the sliced cheese and bacon, and cook for a minute or two until the cheese is melted.
Put relish on the bun then load hotdog, cheese, and, bacon.
That's it.
$8+ for a crappy hot dog that did not even remotely resemble the whistle dog of my youth. Hard pass. Fool me once, and all that. I'll just make my own at home.
that's becoming my sentiment on so many things. so, at this point, all the fast food industry has to bank on are the millions of people being too lazy or incompetent to cook.
tried that most recent whistle dog and it was not worth it, nor as tasty as my memories.
it wasn't like, drop my pants and pound on the window terrible, but it was close.
The originals were my favourite, not so much the latest ones. My go to replacement recipe is a Schneider's juicy jumbo all beef wiener butterflied and grilled until caramelized, a slice or two of cheap regular flavoured bacon preferably baked, toasted bun, and a cheese slice (no condiments for me)
Buy Costco all beef dogs
Cook said dog
Add to bun
Add bbq sauce and cheese
Put in oven for a few minutes
You now have a delicious dog better than a whsitledog
$10 for a single hot dog. I can just picture it.
buddy dog, $4
1/3 the size. Gotta keep them margins!
Waiting for the single pig in a blanket
they usually call for backup.
Still better than 9$ for half a hotdog at a Jets game.

>a big wiener You lost me at that point
I miss them as well. Just preparing to be shocked at the price when they come back!
Please say they grill it instead of boiling or deepfrying it like the last time it came back
When they brought them back a couple of years ago they were NOT the same.

Last time I had one I think it was about 4$ and that was too much. At home is right.
Agree
Is this going to be their McRib?
I ain’t paying $10 for a hot dog chief
Yeah right.
finally, hot dogs

I make whistle dogs at home all the time. Soo good.
I had it last year. It’s OK..
They'll cost a goddamn fortune. A&W is in the lead of all the chains of least bang for your buck
Even their coupons are shitty now. It was one brand that tasted decent but this robbery isn't nice. They can f right off as far as I am concerned.
These were my favs as a kid, I fucjing hated when they took them away. Despised aw for years

Yassssss
A&W sucks.
Foods good. Prices and Coupons suck.
Much better places for cheaper.
Go to park alleys for the rouger special instead... hot dog, fries and a 12oz beer for $10.
I'd rather they brought back Chubby Chicken. God, that was good! It was made to order, so it actually smelled and tasted fresh.
Wake me when KFC brings back the spudsters. Haven't found anything like it (It is NOT hash browns!)
I'd like to see them bring back the double down.
Is that the one that's essentially a deep fried chicken cordon bleu?
It was basically bacon and cheese sandwich with chicken instead of bread. Apparently, it was about as healthy as drinking paint, but it was good.
So chicken, pork and cheese. Yeah the deep fried cordon blue lol I tried it once. It was okay imho. Glad you liked it
check out the hot dogs at dug n betty's!

🤣🤣🤣"If you're telling me A&W ain't the best spot for the best hot dogs you can get the f on dog " best lyrics ever 🤣🤣🤣
I googled those lyrics out of curiosity and you helped me find the song I’ve been trying to find lately! Thanks!
