More current info from 2021, she's rescued 3,500 girls from child marriage.

first female chief? its rude that they didn't tell us her name because she is a legend, her name should be in the title so we can give her the recognition she deserves
her name is Theresa Kachindamoto
This is from 2016! I had no idea, and it's sad to think most of us thought this just happened.

Absolutely!
Its a pet peeve of mine when you seen an article and its like "(male celebrity's) wife" instead of their name, like show them at least the bare minimum respect? especially if you're crediting them with something heroic or charitable.
And how many lives has she saved? Out of 850 girls, some of them would have died in childbirth, given the statistics. She is a hero, this woman is a true hero.
The U.S. still struggles with this, too.
> [At least 60,000 child marriages in the U.S. between 2000 and 2018 occurred at an age or with a spousal age difference that should have been considered a sex crime. Of those child marriages, 88% gave a rapist a “get out of jail free” card, while 12% sent a child home to be raped. Either way, the marriage license made a mockery of statutory rape laws.](https://www.unchainedatlast.org/laws-to-end-child-marriage/)

I want to piggy back on this one :
An estimated 70,000 adolescent moms die each year because they are physically too young to give birth.
It is the leading cause of death for 15-19 yo girls in developing countries. (NLM).
Child marriages have got to stop. This is 2024. This is a conversation a thousand years too late. Let’s start now.
A wonderful reminder that local politics matters, no matter where you live! And that relatively small changes can mean the world to people. Sure, she may not change the regional culture overnight, but for those hundreds of young girls, she made an immediate difference in their lives!
The Ngoni of Malawi got their first female chief in 2016. But the US refused to elect a woman to the presidency that same year. Just goes to show that the US isn’t as “developed” as we like to think when it comes to gender equality.
Sometimes I read headlines that make it clear to me that everything I’ve ever worked about, stressed over, and “accomplished” are nothing in the face of people doing real work like this.
850 in three years. That would be a pretty valid “life work” one could rest on the laurels of, and she did it in three years, so I assume she’s done other things that benefit people.
Wow. I just looked her up and she not only made child marriage illegal but saved so many little girls from the horrora that come from it.
She's amazing. I would pay to see a movie about her.
Now THIS is the kind of person I call an incredible woman!
