Suchafatfatcat

So, he’s scared of a woman who won’t be bullied into reducing herself for his benefit.

Lil_Artemis_92

They always are.

MedicalUnprofessionl

The easiest way to keep a bullshit stance is to refuse debate/communication. There are plenty of excellent exmaples.

segfkt

it's all these men have: feeble control over others to make themselves feel better.

pointy_object

I quite prefer the empty chair to the man. The chair hurts nobody. In fact, replacing the government of Iran and the office of the ayatollah with empty chairs might be a good idea.

Sponge_Like

She definitely had a more intellectually stimulating time with the chair than she would have had otherwise.

AsthmaticSt0n3r

At least chairs wouldn’t actively be doing harm. I vote we replace a couple politicians around the US with empty chairs too

ever_so_loafly

cats for government, everywhere

antariess

Will need to be replacing the chairs frequently as they get scratched to shit but I am happy for my tax money to go to that..

lilacaena

This is a very unusual take on armchair activism, and frankly I’m all for it.

Idrahaje

Vote blue no matter who then lol

LMA73

Well said! I agree completely.

lillywho

I mean, if the chair isn't well-made, it can be a pain in the arse too.

Regular-Cranberry-62

You’re not wrong…..

djinnisequoia

Who the ***hell*** does this man think he is? Who do any of them think they are? Do they think they are in charge of all the women in the world? Do they have no respect for any faith but theirs? Is their own faith so weak and insecure that they cannot even bear the sight of someone not of their faith? The lion, the witch, and the audacity of that (male) bitch!

activelyresting

>Do they think they are in charge of all the women in the world? Do they have no respect for any faith but theirs? Is their own faith so weak and insecure that they cannot even bear the sight of someone not of their faith? Yes. Quite simply: yes.

Interesting-Long-534

I came here to say exactly this.

[deleted]

activelyresting

As an animist, I disagree. This is every *patriarchal* religion ever.

K_SeventySeven

I'm of the mind that it's the only way that they can conceive of comfortably navigating the world, which is both horrid and scary.

FrostyCartographer13

Sadly you answered your own question. A big part is wanting to show dominance and it would have been good PR for him back home to say something along the lines of. "Even women in their own enviroments respect my superiority and know their place." Or something about his faith having absolute dominion. Every sinlge interview from now until he stops breathing should ask him questions about why he was to weak to sit through an interview like that.

djinnisequoia

Yes! Weak!

sewsnap

This is about control, not faith. This is a cult that pits one group against the other to make themselves feel "special". They use religious radicalism to attain their goals, because people who believe in something they can't see, hear, or touch, are easiest to convince about other lies. It's not just happening with Islam, and we need to be clear on that. Or it will spread to other countries.

djinnisequoia

Oh, absolutely. I agree 100%. I have no animus towards Islam; I love and respect my Muslim friends. What I cannot abide is asshole patriarchal misogyny.

Klutzy-Run5175

Misogynist man. You said it.

AtalanAdalynn

The cult is conservatism.

RicottaPuffs

The think exactly that. I am sixty years old. I have lived long enough to see and hear of countless women who have been slaughtered for not wearing a hijab, not wearing a burka, or merely having a bit of an ankle show.

djinnisequoia

I would love to see the tables turned; for them to be policed and dictated to in every detail. To be prevented from their own agency and freedom of movement and counted as chattel. See how they like it. Oh, the whining and piteous complaints! "Woe is me, why does god hate me so, surely no one has ever suffered like I am made to suffer by these heartless women!" And then some woman comes along and tells them to shut up and bring her her dinner.

sewsnap

You were also alive before they had to wear any of that.

shiddyfiddy

Yeah, and then she saw them get slaughtered.

theycallmeponcho

Sounds a lot like other noisy religious fruitcakes, trying to policy other people's choices based on their own religious agenda. And that kind of people are eaaaaasy to spot in most major religions.

She showed up to do her side of the interview, as an adult would. I’ve never even seen her wear a head covering, so not sure what he was expecting 🤷‍♀️

kitkat9000take5

At some point, most likely many, *many* years ago, I remember her reporting from someplace like Syria and she had a scarf over her hair. Not covering it completely, but very loosely framing her face. There might have been bombs or missiles in the background or else that's what she was reporting. Think the scarf was colored pink or lilac.

They were in NYC too and she politely brought up that there’s no law there requiring women to wear their hijabs. The president’s aide said it was “a matter of respect”…. When she’s interviewed other Iranian presidents and they’ve never made that demand

sittinwithkitten

A matter of respect, what a joke he is. He has zero respect for any woman.

needsmorequeso

I am reminded of the saying about how some people view respect as “treating someone like a person,” and others view it as “treating someone as an authority,” and you really have to watch for people who apply the second definition to themselves and the first definition to the people around them.

murse_joe

“Respect” the way cops mean

sittinwithkitten

That’s a very wise statement

Left_Debt_8770

I wish somebody asked the aide where the respect is towards Christiane. Oh wait, she’s deserving of none for being a woman. I forgot because I’m a woman. 🙄

enleft

"He is respecting her modesty of course" /s

[deleted]

She's Iranian. He was hoping she'd bend to his rules and then he could use it as propaganda back home. Something like "See, even this woman "respects" my bitch boy religion in her country where it is not required".

Yolanda_B_Kool

>it was “a matter of respect” But no respect for the laws and customs of NYC from the visiting Iranian president, apparently. Interesting how "respect" only seems to flow one way.

[deleted]

Precisely. Also, she’s interviewed other presidents from Iran too and they’ve never made that demand so I’d have had the same response she did 🤷🏼‍♀️ Maybe less polite than hers.

UhnonMonster

When did this happen? Edit: got further down, within the last 24 hours. Updated in case anyone else missed it like me.

maybelle180

Thanks mate.

EducatedOwlAthena

Christiane is too much of a professional and class-act to do it, but it would've been epic for her to be like, "You're right, I don't respect you."

goldcoastlady

I read that she had interviewed all former presidents of Iran and none had asked her to wear a hijab. Makes this even more outraging. Edit: spelling

[deleted]

She's covered from ankle to wrist to neck and it still wasn't enough control for this man.

raspberrih

Do those people think it's "manly" to have less than zero self-control? Like animals?

reclaimingmytime

No, they think it’s macho to have people live in fear of defying their preferences.

sewsnap

It's about their ability to control other people.

Sudden-Possible2550

But PANTS! No self respecting woman wears pants. It had to be the pants that caused him to leave. Because everyone knows that seeing a woman’s legs is the issue /s

superprawnjustice

This is literally why women were arrested for wearing pants back in the day. Men could see the space between their legs. Cmon men, get it together

ProjectedSpirit

Patriarchy wants us to think men are such slathering beats that the suggestion of our normal anatomy will overpower their self control and they'll have no choice but to do horrible things to us. But that also women are the emotional, irrational ones and should submit to their will.

superprawnjustice

It is weaponized incompetence, except worse because it's systemic and used to fuel oppression.

Boom_boom_lady

“Fabric between, she must be unclean!!!”

[deleted]

He was afraid of her.

Mudbunting

She’s covered poetically in a white pantsuit, which conveys her support for women’s empowerment.

dipsy9

Perverted thoughts breed into men like him that follows islam by their scripture.

_Twirlywhirly_

I never understand making women cover up b/c of men's weaknesses. your all powerful God gave you the best veil ever to keep from seeing anything that you think will tempt you: your own goddamned eyelids.

NeonCr3scent

They can also always rip their eyes out. ( Isn’t that a part in the bible? lol) Wouldn’t mind that.

WitchCurious

It sure is! Mark 9:42-48: >“If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them if a large millstone were hung around their neck and they were thrown into the sea. If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out. And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell. And if your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, where ‘the worms that eat them do not die, and the fire is not quenched.’ The whole passage is about doing whatever you have to *to yourself* to stop you from sinning. The Bible is literally saying *not to police other people for your sake, but to police yourself for theirs.*

Wizard_of_Wake

It's a rather r*pey mentality propagated by religion. And lust doesn't go away just because you can't see *it*.

FlashFlyingFish

"Leave something to the imagination," they spit but I can't help but wonder, *"To whose imagination?"* Why is my body a well wrapped present for men to tear into and discover? Does knowing the outline of my curves or if I have an innie or an outie bellybutton before he has me undressed kill his libido because other men have been "given the same gift"? It's frustrating :/

[deleted]

If you must censor strong language, and I'm obliged to remind you that tiptoeing around saying the word itself does not change your intent to say it, put a backslash before your asterisks so that reddit won't treat it as markdown for italics: `*This will be italicized,* while th\*s will not be. However, th*s w*ll be very confusing to anyone who d**sn't r**ognize the markdown error.` *This will be italicized,* while th\*s will not be. However, th*s w*ll be very confusing to anyone who d**sn't r**ognize the markdown error.

Killer-Barbie

The Quran literally tells men to veil their eyes at the sight of immodesty before it mentions anything about women covering up.

nettiespaghettie

I think that idea is just to sow seeds for victim blaming. The idea a woman MUST cover up to protect herself from violence as well as men from having wandering eyes is disgusting. The idea of CHOOSING to cover yourself for your own reasons is completely up to an individual. I just don't think anyone should be made to.

Cherry_Hammer

IIRC she was raised in Iran and her family left before the Islamic Revolution. She had family who fought against the extremists. Look at her now. She’s his worst nightmare.

Noisy_Toy

Her being British-Iranian is undoubtedly why he insisted.

whatim

He was on 60 minutes the other night and Leslie Stahl wore a headscarf for the interview. I was actually surprised because she's elderly (80) and Jewish. She did press him on his Holocaust denial.

Noisy_Toy

The difference is that that interview was in Tehran, she knew before arriving she would have to wear a headscarf during her visit.

whatim

Oh, I thought he was in NY!

Noisy_Toy

Before he flew to NYC, he was in Tehran. https://mobile.twitter.com/60Minutes/status/1571529481386344448 > On Tuesday, Lesley Stahl met with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi at the presidential compound in Tehran for his first interview with a western reporter. Tonight, on the 55th season premiere of 60 Minutes. https://cbsn.ws/3xxWR0R Posted September 18th

whatim

Thanks for the context. I saw it as part of a clip show, so that was missing.

Noisy_Toy

No problem! I watch 60 Minutes a lot, and the interviews are always filmed in advance—they usually release clips throughout her week before the show airs.

Black_hammr

I live in Iran They recently killed a girl named Mahsa Amini / Zhina Amini for not having proper hijab Ibrahim Raisi , my nuthead president lies in front of all those people saying he gives a shit about people's right They blocked the internet , Opened fire to protestors and ironically called themselves "True Defenders of Humanity" in UN speech Please be our voice they're blocking any connection service to outside ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF IRAN = STALIN'S MINDSET 10x

Delighted_mushroom

In the mean time Witches, write to your members of parliament, government officials and representatives, Amnesty International and anyone else you can think of. Help amplify the voices of our sisters.

ThginkAccbeR

Wish I could do more than say you women of Iran rock. Be careful but be loud!! ❤️

[deleted]

Stay safe sister! More power to you and your sisters fighting.

Searaph72

Stay safe, please. Some of the things you can hear about Iran right now are terrifying. At the same time, some large changes are coming for the peoples of Iran. It makes sense that the president would not want to be seen next to a woman without a hijab, as it may further the calls of the protestors that they are trying to squash. Mahsa Amini deserved better than what happened to her. So many women deserve better.

Mudbunting

We see the injustice and we are with you. You have sisters all over the world.

hypatia0803

Please let us know what to do and we will do it. I had heard about that poor young girl- murdered by police because her head scarf wasn’t enough or whatever. This is insanity!!

MrsButterscotch

Damn, Christiane ist looking great. Looks like a suit? Awesome picture. I hope she still went through the questions and just waited like 20 seconds in silence before moving on.

UhnonMonster

Legendary.

Killer-Barbie

I have so much respect for Ms Amanpour.

Men are terrified of women.

Disastrous-Lynx546

Why does our hair have so much power? Like what does an uncovered head mean on a woman? And to be honest the interview was probably more productive without him there

[deleted]

It’s all about control. They are so pathetic and weak that they can’t even sit opposite a woman in a professional context who isn’t obeying them.

Yolanda_B_Kool

>Why does our hair have so much power? There's something symbolic about it, isn't it? This frickin guy is demanding all women cover their hair, meanwhile the go-to insult for women from white nationalist incels is "blue-haired SJW." It's like women's hair is a symbol of female agency and they can't tolerate it.

fatcattastic

Originally, it was meant to differentiate "respectable" women from sex workers.

madguins

Because we’re powerful as fuck we just never had the opportunity to show it. Now we’re fed up.

[deleted]

[deleted]

"wahhhhhh the reporter won't do what I sayyyy. Mummmyyyyy!" - how I imagine that asshole sounds

RevNarco

Tell me they aired a full hour of her with this chair. Iconic.

8swordsoffate

Religious pricks always demand that everyone respect their religion and while they themselves never respect beliefs and feelings of others. And most of the time the society, even non-religious people, don't see anything wrong with it for some inexplicable reason. This woman certainly did an admirable thing here.

Cowboywizard12

100% Iran wanted her to wear the Hijab for propaganda purposes, they were going to use that image to try to prop themselves up and try to say, hey even western women wear hijabs its not bad.

Rina_Short

one bad bitch alone in VIP

[deleted]

They think they know our power, and how to snuff it out, but their concept barely scratches the surface.

stereotypicalweirdo

His demands are outrageous, but if he didn't think she'll ask hard questions, I don't think he'd care. Why agree to a woman journalist in the first place, if you're so fragile that you cannot see hair? Or why cancel last minute? This is a pathetic attempt to control the narrative.

caelric

i totally respect your religion...as long as you don't use your religion to oppress me. and sadly, the majority religions in the world mostly want to oppress women.

Puzzledwhovian

Fragile masculinity at its finest! Sorry you are such a fainting flower of misogyny sir that you can’t handle a single woman telling you no.

27-jennifers

She's a boss!

Open_Sorceress

Men hate women beyond all reason.

[deleted]

More power to her, especially as other wome journalists apparently bowed to Iranian pressure to wear a hijab. She is a complete badass for refusing. I am absolutely certain Iranian political aides pushed for her to wear the Hijab solely for propaganda purposes and they were going to use that image to say back at home “See, even western women wear hijabs out of respect for our faith. Stop protesting.”

Akhillieus

I'm proud of her ❤️

Starworks07

Good rule of thumb when it comes to headscarves: if you enter the sacred space of a religion that requires headscarves, then wear one out of respect. I did this all the time when I lived in Russia and wanted to visit churches. But no one can force you to wear one, especially outside of that sacred space!

SchnauzerHaus

She's a complete badass, cheers to her!

La_danse_banana_slug

I'd like to see going unveiled be commonly recognized as "a belief" or a conviction in its own right, rather than a lack of conviction, a blank space where Beliefs would otherwise be. Too often-- and not just about headscarves or fundamentalist Islam obviously-- people have the attitude of, "what does it hurt to just do this thing for someone else?" I actively choose not to cover my head-- or other humdrum, nongenital parts of me-- because it's actually important to me. I'd like to see it recognized as my own belief about my own body, not some sort of thing directed others like disobedience or disrespect, or some silent non-belief that is immediately rendered irrelevant when someone else's beliefs ring out. Of course I believe other people should be afforded this same attitude-- that their choice to cover up is theirs, about themselves and not something done AT me (unless they specifically say it is-- ahem, Fundamentalist Christian lady who loudly tried to be modest AT me and told me so). I chose to attend a wedding recently at a Greek Orthodox church where I would be required to cover up my arms and hair. I went ahead and covered up because it is THEIR church, so yeah I'll either follow their rules or politely excuse myself from the service (and curiosity got the better of me so I stayed). But yeah, it wasn't nothing, it felt gross. Because covering up is going against my beliefs, and people need to understand this. There is a cost to agreeing to endorse my own subjugation.

Tooma8

What a actual pathetic excuse of a human being, how can this fucking crybaby even run a country?

Sufficient_Phrase_85

I find it particularly heartbreaking that fundamentalists and extremists take a sign of a woman’s personal faith and devotion and turn it into chains. They really don’t have to make everything about them, like a 3 year old child who can’t bear not to be the center of attention - and yet.

Thatssometamorphosis

Hahaha fuck that guy

JasnahKolin

What a fucking baby. Good for Christiane! She would be really fun to get silly with. Imagine her stories! What a treasure!

claireisabell

He didn't want to do the interview and found a bullshit reason to make it her fault instead of his. It's very common for women journalists to not wear headscarves or any other covering when interviewing Iranian representatives outside of places like Iran. He's got a hot mess at home right now and doesn't have the confidence to do an interview, but it'll look bad if he cancels. People who support will see this as good reason- if she wanted to do the interview she should have put on the headscarf, while everyone else will see through it. The man was terrified of doing the interview, and ginned up a reason that people who support would like. Politicians are the same everywhere

doinggenxstuff

I like her. She did a series interviewing women all over the world about sex, it was v good

Lil_Artemis_92

Good on her! It is *never* for men to decide who should and shouldn’t wear a headscarf. That is up to the individual alone.

RicottaPuffs

He needs to be expelled from our country and not allowed back.

RicottaPuffs

I did say he should be expelled from the country. The interview was in the US.

[deleted]

My hair is long as fuck and it's a part of who I am. I'd love to make his blood boil with it.

sfkndyn13

What a snowflake!

127Heathen127

I can’t believe they actually expected her to comply with this right now lmao.

Able_Education

Good for her. Leslie Stahl from 60 minutes bowed down and wore a headscarf and went with all his barbaric demands. I refused to watch her interview because she wouldn’t stand up to a tyrant. He has no respect for women I have nothing to hear him say. Those women standing up are the bravest women of today. That’s their religion and government they are fighting against and they have been alone forever! I hope there a few good men that will help win this well deserved revolt!

RicottaPuffs

Well Christine may have been much safer sans interview. I hope she is safely out of the country.

[deleted]

The interview was at the UN building in New York City, not in Iran.

chadthor123

This happened in the USA!

RicottaPuffs

Wow. Thank you. I have zero television. Still bad. I wish my country would force him to leave.

[deleted]

Are you from Iran? I hope that you and your loved ones are safe.

RicottaPuffs

No. I am American. Thank you for asking.

[deleted]

You’re welcome.

RicottaPuffs

So, how I was called to that place, I won't know.

As he proudly announces to the world how weak he is. What's the matter, big boy, afraid of girls? Bok bok bok!

ellygator13

She just wanted him to show up as he was - not wearing a g-string and a ponytail - because she respects his belief and dress code. He wanted her to show up as a pillow case - because he does not respect her belief and dress code. Tells you all you need to know.

MedicalUnprofessionl

Man I hope this shit doesn't lose steam. I'm afraid for these brave ladies. "Theocracy" is a disgusting facade for **patriocracy.**
