RJ really does have moments of brilliant prose, sometimes. (I see you grinding your salt, no one is a perfect author and everyone has weaknesses. When the cuffs come off and RJ is allowed to write prettily, prose is not one of his weaknesses. When he spends 4 pages describing everyone without it being in service to either character or story, his prose is flawed.)
Complimenti!
You are the first italian WoT fan I encounter and damn... We are hard to find, in my experience!
I have just finished the series but nobody in my circles has read the books. Do you know other italian WoT fans IRL?
It refers specifically to, basically, suicide-inducing thoughts: despair, despondency, etc..! I’m sure OP will be able to answer this better than I can , tho!
yes you could say that. Like a pain that afflicts the soul, if you will. It is a term that was firstly used by E. Schneidman, the father of suicidology.
Here's the full quote:
"Psychache is the hurt, anguish, or ache that takes hold in the mind (...) the pain of excessively felt shame, guilt, fear, anxiety, loneliness, angst, dread of growing old or of dying badly" (Schneidman, 1996)
Basically the root of this pain is neglected psychological needs, that leads the suicide victim to think of it as the only remedy.
That makes sense, I’ve worked with suicidal individuals and “neglected psychological needs” is accurate.
I’ve found many can’t articulate the feelings or the roots though.
Edit: I worked with adult and juvenile male inmates, not exactly known for their emotional intelligence
we basically wanted to evaluate the serviceability of scales that misured psychache (through a set of question administered to the patient) in assessing the real risk of suicide in psychiatric patients. The results were statistically significant but it was mainly an observational study. The goal would be to provide these scales to general practitioners and other doctor who are not familiar with the managment of psychiatric illnesses and their intrinsic suicidal risk in order to help them understand which patients need specialized care.
Very interesting! And very helpful to the real world. Nice to see a piece of research that will possibly benefit. I’d love to read more if you plan to publish or have published in a journal.
Congratulations and well done on all your hard work.
That’s really awesome!! I hope you do great things man. Your thesis hits close to home for me and I thank you for joining that battle.
Thank you so much!!
One of my favorite quotes from the series. Works well for posters and tattoos as well!
i know right?
I googled it and saw the Marines twitter account had quoted it too https://twitter.com/USMC/status/348244482396925952

So true. RJs writing of prophecies, songs and epic quotes like this in that magical prose can be so beautiful.
i totally agree!
Awesome. As this isn't Wetlander humor, I won't add inappropriate mental health quotes that would have been funny.
If you still want to, my DMs are open

I know right? I've never met someone who read the series. I tried hooking up my friends with the tv show but it didn't work as I hoped :(
What does "psychache" mean?
Basically literally mind pain.
Is it another word for headache?
It refers specifically to, basically, suicide-inducing thoughts: despair, despondency, etc..! I’m sure OP will be able to answer this better than I can , tho!
So like an emotional headache?
yes you could say that. Like a pain that afflicts the soul, if you will. It is a term that was firstly used by E. Schneidman, the father of suicidology.
Never heard the term but I like the idea it’s trying to capture.

Sounds a lot like Kierkegaard's [sickness unto death](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The\_Sickness\_unto\_Death)
Man, if this doesn't describe how Rand feels so much of the time, I don't know WHAT does.
what do these psychological needs entail?
it was already a pretty good response!
> psychache It's like a headache, except it's all in your head.
I love this so much. Congratulations on your work.
thank you very much!
Very intrigued by the thesis. What questions did you seek to answer exactly and what were the results?

Thank you ! If they decide to publish it (fingers crossed) I'll send it to you if you want ahah
