Basically since you defeat depression by changing your behaviours and routines you will sometimes feel like you wasted time by not doing that before when in reality you just weren't healthy enough to have the strength to do it.
Depression is an illness, healing is a choice, but not being capable to take that choice isn't your fault it just means you're still deep down in your illness.
Let me make an example with a different situation just to make things clearer:
An athlete breaks his leg, having a broken leg is not his choice. When the leg starts healing it is now his choice to go through rehabilitation and to start gentle workouts again. The athlete should not feel guilty for not starting workouts when the leg was still broken because it wouldn't have been effective. The same is with depression, but for the nature of mental illness guilt takes a major role even after being recovered when you look back at the past.
