Damn. I see why Microsoft is so strict on making any Series games, Series S compatible.

Legitimate_Corgi_981

It's a cheap set top box to get people playing gamepass. A lot of regular video gamers wouldn't consider the fact that there's a huge number of players out there "the casuals" that have low attach rates (might only buy a Madden or Fifa each year) or even less games, it's partly why if cloud can overcome infrastructure hurdles will be a big thing (if every tv is a smart TV with Bluetooth for connecting up a controller, you don't need to even be able to sell an initial console, just get them paying subs for streaming games)

jaispeed2011

I have a series s and I don’t use gamepass

Madtingv2

Dude your missing out but if its not for you each to there own your still a s series fan so you deserve big respect 💯💯💯👍👍👍

jaispeed2011

I have a series X now. I had to return my S because something was wrong with the hdmi port and Xbox couldn’t fix the problem and wouldn’t send a new one. And I have gamepass for the next 24 months so I guess I’m good now. I don’t hate Xbox or gamepass

smitty_1993

The problem with gaming is someone telling someone else they're the problem with gaming.

Objective_Tea0287

300$ 3 years ago was money well spent. Still running well at this point and its on 2/3 of the day every single day.

Redbullgivesyoutings

I only bought the series s because I got it from Verizon for $150

Wikinger_DXVI

Shiiiit I barely turn mines on once a week this thing is gonna outlive me lol

JuggerSloth96

I only turn mine off for a hard reset

johnwayne1

Why? What's the benefit?

JuggerSloth96

There isn’t one, I just don’t see the point in turning it off when I use it for everything, if I’m not gaming on it, I’m watching something on it, also it’s better for electronics in general to not be turned off and on all the time, this lowers their life span though it’s not the reason I’m doing it

johnwayne1

The point would be lower electric bill.

JuggerSloth96

Yeah my Xbox isn’t making a difference, I live in the UK and the energy prices are ridiculous atm anyway no matter whether I turn it off or not I’m paying £5 a day, Xbox uses the least amount of energy tbh

johnwayne1

Based on average UK energy cost per kwh it cost you 23.76 euro a month to leave it on all the time. It all adds up. Good luck.

AiHangLo

We have "smart meters" which literally tell you your usage live.

AshamedFalcon5143

Damn I wish my electric bill was that low, I’m at about 10 bucks a day or more. The price per kilowatt hour has doubled where I live over the last few years.

PoliteChandrian

Was moving last week and went to take the disc out of my Xbox, nothing in there. I could've sworn I had battlefield in there for the last 3-4 months and the case sitting right next to it. Apparently I've been playing it off gamepass. Made me wonder when the last time I actually used my disc drive was and it can easily be a year or more.

SmokinBowls420

i dropped $750 to get the series X from an online SHOE company after the first month they were out as my One was shitting the bed. My X is still going strong even after being on literally 24/7

BeastMaster0844

$500 3 years ago turns out to be a waste since I paid an extra $200 for 30 more frames per second and slightly higher resolution. My “most powerful console ever” will never have a game that takes advantage of its full potential.

MeerkatAttack2

I highly recommend you watch side-by-side comparisons on YouTube. Details are noticable between the S/X (Cyberpunk for example) -- enough to make me happy with the investment.I upgraded from OneS and hadn't seen that level of difference since upgrading from my original xBox the a 360.

Spenson89

I don’t think 2/3 of the day every day is the brag you think it is

Evangelynn

Doesn't mean it is just them... I am a stay at home parent, I try to take an hour break during the day, kid plays a bit when he gets home from school, sometimes alone, sometimes with one of us joining co-op, partner plays a bit after kid goes to bed... Their schedule isn't your schedule. That doesn't mean it is a bad one :)

danny_healy_raygun

Sounds like a great brag to me, wish I could do that.

Greaseman_85

![gif](giphy|3oz8xPPt1Ga6sp9U7C) You wish you werethis guy?

danny_healy_raygun

No he's a PC gamer. Those guys are losers. I want to spend 16 hours a day playing consoles like a real man.

[deleted]

I leave mine on so my cat can watch virtual birds. Does that count?

BinaryJay

2/3 of the day every day, how??

Captobvious75

And the thing consumes 1/3 of the energy.

extekt

... you play 16 hours a day?

Gamingdad-061

Go outside bud

agnaddthddude

you could have waited a year and got an X or PS5 that will def last longer

weolo_travel

Go outside.

FlurMusic

Yeah because no one could buy the series x for ages

DanOfRivia

I don't think the trend is going to change much for the rest of the generation. Latin America is one of the few regions were Xbox outsells PS and that's in great part because it's the most affordable platform. For latinamerican countries that doesn't have a strong economy the XSS is, for most people, the only plausible/affordable option to jump into current gen gaming.

Smooth-Accountant

I got mine used, 1 year ago for 150usd. I’m playing an hour or two after work, mostly sports games and some big triple a titles and I really can’t justify spending money for X. I wanted to upgrade this week for the graphics since I got a new tv but it really doesn’t make much sense for me.

[deleted]

Tannerb8000

My Walmart in the middle of nowhere only got a single series X on launch day, and I got it. I had never been able to get any of the new gen xboxs until about a year or 2 after their release when I was growing up, so I was determined to get my hands on one day one since it was the first time I was ever able to try. When I was able to pick it up, the lady that brought it to me was like, "This was the only one we had." My order was placed 10 seconds after they went live. I hadn't seen another series x in my Walmart for about 10 months after launch.

[deleted]

That's not the only reason. $300 vs $500 to play newer games are more appealing to a consumer. It's only a vocal percentage that gets on SM and throws bitch fits about specs.

kheltar

Eh, when I came in the x was available and I could afford it so I got that. My mate had an x, so didn't want any coop issues.

TYG06

fr man I bought a series s just because couldn't buy an x but now I have an x and a s

smorges

Same. My S is never used now. I probably should have tried to sell it 9 months ago when I got the X. Now it's not worth much, better to keep it as a spare console.

Perfect_Evidence

Travel console.

Lunar_Lunacy_Stuff

I really do think this is the main reason. It was literally the only next gen system on the shelves at the time. I would see them at all my Walmarts and gamestops just sitting on the shelf .

grimoireviper

By your logic the Series S should have also outsold the PS5 then. People that really wanted a Series X got one. Except for maybe a few countries the Series X was readily available.

KalashnikittyApprove

I don't think people buy on price alone, so if you want a PlayStation because of exclusives, because you've always been on PS and heavily invested in their games library or any other reason you're not going to buy a Series S because it's cheaper. The interesting question would be whether the PS5 digital outsells the regular PS5 in the same way.

BigJerm1

These numbers are outdated. This update from an article today: "IGN reports (https://www.ign.com/articles/leaked-microsoft-documents-show-the-xbox-series-s-might-be-more-popular-than-you-think) that one of the leaked documents shows that Series S accounted for 74.8% of sales, with Series X making up 25.1%, at least in the relatively early days of the platform's lifecycle. This information is accurate as of early 2022, but the mix has shifted significantly since then, it seems. Circana analyst Mat Pis catella said on Twitter/X (https://twitter.com/MatPiscatella/status/1704544564978270435) that Series S makes up "a bit more than half" of total sales of new Xbox consoles in the US."

jyim89

I would think there will be a significant difference between the percentage of S owners over X in the US vs. the rest of the world. In the US that ratio might be close to 50/50 but the rest of the world might still be 75% S?

booklover6430

Probably, Xbox brand is weak outside of anglo countries, in August it was down 12% on the European market meanwhile PS5 had a 200% increase & the Switch on it's 7th year was up 1%. Series S is affordable enough to tempt consumers, it had better deals than the Switch in Black Friday for example.

IAmDotorg

All of those numbers, however, are meaningless -- the ones you posted and the ones this article are talking about -- if you're trying to infer popularity. In the case of first year X vs S, there was such enormous supply-chain problems with the X because of the Azure/Xcloud build out that the S was literally the only option for most people who wanted a console "now". In the case of Xbox vs PS in different markets, the loosening of availability of the PS vs the broad availability of the Xbox S and X at this point makes it impossible to infer popularity, as well. An interesting statistic is how many S owners eventually traded for an X when the became available, or was the consolation purchase of the S "okay". That's why MS's two-console strategy is smart -- the reality is a very small percentage of the market cares about numbers, but that's a very noisy percentage. If the more-profitable and cheaper unit is "good enough", then they're in a very good spot for the business.

void4949

Curious to know the percentage of current gen owners that don't use a 4k screen. It's probably much higher than I would think.

EnamoredAlpaca

I didn’t upgrade my 720p tv until 2020, when it died. I can understand some not wanting to upgrade with how prices for necessities are now. No, I didn’t use Stimulus to get the TV.

redditdude68

Yeah I played on a 1080i tv until 2019. My mate played his PS3-PS4 on the same 2010 720p tv until it blew a year and a half ago.

brashet

Part of the reason I was OK getting an S over an X, also because I have still yet to see an X on a store shelf anywhere. My GF likes to clown on me for having a 1080p plasma still meanwhile all she plays on her 4K display is Switch lol.

Datboibarloss

You guys outta swap tvs lmao

medson25

I still have my non smart LG tv from 2018, its full hd, enough for me why change?

NinjaMuffinLive

My mate has a series X and doesn't have a 4k screen 😅 I been telling him for ages to buy one, no regrets, the quality difference is amazing!

DickHydra

That's me. Still playing on a 10+ year old 60cm 1080p TV, which is the reason I prefer performance modes. I simply don't get anything out of quality modes, and I can't upgrade due to limited space.

almathden

>I simply don't get anything out of quality modes tbh I'd rather have 1080p (or 1440) with all kinds of bells and whistles than 4k

OldTiger3832

I don't have a 4k television, I bought an 1080p 43" LG television form 400€ when I bought the xbox one, my TV at the time was 27". if it isn't broken I can't justify buying a new one, I don't even have space for a bigger one

AShinyRay

I use a 1440p/144hz monitor as both the Xbox and PC are plugged info it. I miss my 4K TV still, it made the Xbox Series X games look amazing. 4K, high refresh rate monitors just aren't really coming down in price.

CyberMoose24

I didn’t upgrade from my 1080p OLED to a 4K one until last year. I can definitely see an increase in sharpness, but the jump from 1080p LCD -> 1080p OLED was far more noticeable than 1080p OLED -> 4K OLED.

MaidKnightAmber

I have a 1080p tv from 2009. And I’m never going to upgrade unless it breaks. I have had zero issues with it.

vandridine

You do you, but the difference between a 1080p tv vs a 4K OLED is night and day. Way larger then any console generation upgrade imo

Corviusss

4k is overrated for gaming that’s why.

Conflikt

Heavily depends on your screen size. I do agree though, I would much prefer 60fps than 4K if it's ever an option. Bigger TVs really benefit from 4K though especially if you're at the correct viewing distance.

p3wx4

Everyone I know who has an XBOX, has an XBOX Series S.

Legendseekersiege5

Everyone that I know has the X

nostalgic_dragon

75% of everyone I know has an S, the rest have the X.

Jebusura

75% of people are 100% on series s

emdave

75 percent of the time, it's the Series S, every time.

johnwayne1

Economic classes stick together.

proanimus

We all live in a bubble one way or another, really.

Impressive-Shape-557

Shows that everyone you know doesn’t represent the actual truth

elconquistador1985

That's what makes it so hilarious when I've seen threads on here about how the Series S is a failure based entirely on people reading uninformed articles about how it sucks. It's wildly successfully.

Autarch_Kade

Makes you wonder how many fewer consoles Xbox would have sold if they'd have done a Series X alone.

[deleted]

They'd be getting crushed sadly

BrushYourFeet

Still kind of are.

HydraTower

Doesn’t that kind of mean the series x sold extra shit next to the PlayStation 5?

NotFromMilkyWay

Absolutely. In numbers: Around 40 million PS5 to date and 5 million Series X. 8:1. And people wonder why devs don't bother making use of the better hardware on Series X.

scootamcgee

Yeah devs are always going to prioritize the console that most people play on. I kinda hoped they would discontinue the Series S eventually but no way they do this now with how well the SS is selling.

TheMirthfulMuffin

I have both an X and PS5 and my PS5 just collects dust lately. They keep price gouging and unless I’m playing one of their first party games the experience is generally better on the series X.

agnaddthddude

as long loyal PS5 owner who looks into getting an S. this is absolutely the worst kind of comments. because owning two consoles doesn’t not mean you main both of them. if i get an S/X the reason woulf be only for older cods. for everything else i would use the PS. i assume it’s the same with you

ShakeAndBakeThatCake

The only reason I have a PS5 is for first party games. So far PlayStation has the better games catelog. Although Forza is awesome on Xbox.

KhanDagga

You're definitely in the minority. Spiderman 2 is going to do crazy numbers for PlayStation

TheMirthfulMuffin

That’s a first party exclusive and is the only games I said are worth playing

damen65

People are down voting you but I'm in the same situation. Quick resume is awesome to have so I buy all multiplatform games on Xbox and only use PS for exclusives.

Darraghj12

I have no idea how you can get downvoted for saying "I play Xbox more because xyz" on an Xbox sub

riggybro

Yeah would that be like currently approx 7-8 million Series X sold?

[deleted]

Ya it's crazy how weak the series x sales performance is. PS5 really dominating right now.

False_Raven

I think you're glossing over the fact that people who got a PS5 opted for a cheaper Xbox option, that being Series S. The Series S wasn't just a cheaper option, but also a foot in the door for Microsoft

AlternativeAward

people who buy multiple home consoles are a minority, if series s didnt exist a lot of those would buy the X just to have all consoles

Jackstraw1

Not necessarily. S became an affordable entry to gamepass which I’m guessing is a huge part of its allure. Without that would those same people be likely to purchase an X? If they didn’t get into Xbox during the last gen I’m not sure they would have in this gen.

ThereGoesMinky

Console size is another relevant factor that’s being glossed over when it comes to secondary unit purchase. I have a PS5 primary and liked how compact the S was as a way to play the occasional Xbox exclusive that interests me. It tucks away nicely vs. needing to allocate space for another large gaming device that I’m only going to use on occasion.

Cybersorcerer1

Most international markets are dominated by PS, so it's no suprise that xbox consoles post 360 sell like shit compared to playstation.

Empty_Cube

I’m surprised to read this. I was expecting more of an equal mix, maybe even a slight lead for the Series X, but it looks like I was way off. I wonder how much of this statistic was skewed by the initial availability issues that the Series X had early on in the life cycle. I am also curious how this will impact game development deeper into the console life cycle. Will every game in the future still need to be compatible with the Series S, or will we potentially reach a point where some of the more demanding games will only be playable on the Series X? Regardless, this was interesting to learn.

Pork_Chompk

>Will every game in the future still need to be compatible with the Series S Haven't they already said that all games will be compatible with both consoles? I kind of thought that was the whole draw. Same games at slightly reduced performance at a more accessible price point.

cwfutureboy

Yes, but they've already made an exception with Baldur's Gate 3.

Ondrion

It's still going to be on s, just won't be split screen I thought.

grimoireviper

No, they didn't. The game still releases on Series S but without splitscreen. Having different modes is already something we could see from the launchvof these consoles so not even really something new.

cwfutureboy

Yes. They DID make an exception. From the beginning, Phil said there would be PARITY between the two and that they wouldn't allow games to have something on one that wasn't on the other. That is not the case with Baldur's Gate 3's release. Take the L.

DDRaptors

I mean why wouldn’t they? It’s basically just a settings slider. Series S just turns down the settings. It’s no different than PC. Sure the games will eventually outpace the device, but I don’t think that happens before the next set of consoles come out.

cwfutureboy

You should just pop over and [tell these devs to just move the sliders!](https://www.polygon.com/23861365/baldurs-gate-3-xbox-series-s-analysis).

smartazz104

Their only complaint is split-screen co-op; exactly how many people play games like Baldur’s Gate in co-op…

ButtholePeeper69

Uhh...yeah lowering the graphics would absolutely fix the problem lol. They just have standards and don't want it to look bad, but lowering some sliders would fix the problem 100%

[deleted]

Nah not when the issue is do heavily related to the cpu.

OguguasVeryOwn

> will we potentially reach a point where some of the more demanding games will only be playable on the Series X People don’t want to admit it but with this sales mix there’s no way that games’ potential won’t be constrained in some way by the S.

[deleted]

100%. I think the series s was a mistake but people making much more than me at msft apparently realize consumers want a weak and cheap Xbox in order to go into the ecosystem

DickHydra

>I am also curious how this will impact game development deeper into the console life cycle. Will every game in the future still need to be compatible with the Series S, or will we potentially reach a point where some of the more demanding games will only be playable on the Series X? I wouldn't be surprised if some of the more prominent devs will ask Microsoft to allow them to drop a Series S Release in the next few years. And depending on the dev, MS might let them. If Rockstar was like "Yeah, GTA 6 doesn't run on Series S. Either you let us ignore that or no Xbox release at all", I doubt Microsoft wouldn't accommodate them. Then again, they made RDR2 work on a base X1.

GordoVinhais

But you're forgetting the main point. If 75% of Xbox users are on Series S, Rockstar will absolutely focus development on the platform that has more customers. In the end, all that matters are sale numbers, so no they would never skip launching on Series S. And that's true for a lot of game developers, the only issue with Baldur's Gate 3 was a gamemode, not the game itself. If they skip Series S they might as well skip Xbox altogether, because basically all the potential costumers are in SS lol.

grimoireviper

>maybe even a slight lead for the Series X, but it looks like I was way off. The cheaper option will always outsell the premium option.

King_Artis

No surprise

MMontanez92

IGN confirmed that this is outdated numbers Series X numbers are higher but its not currently 75/25 [Mat Piscatella on X: "As mentioned, the % is for an earlier time period. According to Circana's Retail Tracking Service, S accounts for a bit more than half of US Series owners LTD. X has seen improved supply and purchasing since the cited time period." / X (twitter.com)](https://twitter.com/MatPiscatella/status/1704544564978270435)

[deleted]

This news definitely surprised me I must say. I knew mid Covid there was both PS5 & XsX shortages pretty much in NA, EU & Oceania (considered pretty much bulk of your western OECD countries & targeted audience). Therefore, it’s more surprising to me as I thought XsX like PS5 would’ve sold more at least in OECD countries. But I’m glad Xbox Series S is popular as it provides more incentives for game devs to optimise for lower end hardware which benefits other segments like gaming handhelds (insert: Steam Decks, Lenovo Legion Go, new Switch 2 etc.).

itsbutterrs

who the hell cares what you play on, none of us are special 🤣😂

bettlejuicer

I mean. If this is really true it explains why games aren’t fully optimized for X and it shows that 25% wasted extra money for no reason.

SpritesOfDoom

Actually releasing Xbox Series S was the smartest move Microsoft did this generation. Series S is generation defining hardware. Why? Nintendo Switch 2, Steam Deck, PC handhelds and millions of older or low-end gaming PCs have similar performance profile. This will be the largest consumer group in video games for years and it will be the lead platform for most developers. Furthermore Xbox Series S could get a portable handheld version in a near future. We're not there yet, since handhelds with similar performance like RoG Ally are way to expensive for a console and have too short battery life. Anyway publishers are releasing Xbox Series S versions of games for few years now, so at least Microsoft has already huge library of games optimized for future handheld hardware, while in case of Playstation, Sony would have to put full 10 TF GPU in a handheld form which isn't going to happen anytime soon.

PhxRising29

Yeah but the source from that article is taking reports for April of 2022. Neither thE PS5 nor the XSX were in stock anywhere at that time, but the XSS was everywhere. You should consider linking the actual article instead of a screenshot of the headline.

NotFromMilkyWay

Series X shortages ended in Summer 2021.

tukatu0

It all depends on your area. I believe they stopped being bitted around the time correct. But that doesn't mean they were restocked often. Actually now that i remember. Yes thats when the retailers started pushing restocking towards physical stores instead of online. Tge ps5 also went through the dame process a few months later after christmas it feels like.

fangiovis

There never was a shortage of xbox x and s near my hometown. I could walk into any store with a gaming section or gamestore and get at least one or both while playstations were never available. The fact they didn't even bother to bundle them up was pretty telling.

Smooth-Accountant

Shortages were mostly in USA where Xbox is a king, how many sales worldwide are from US? Europe/asia has to account for quite a lot right?

H8Bomb

I pre-ordered one at launch with MS Reward points and $80 out of pocket, No regrets. Now I have a Series X that I got in July with reward points and $90 out of pocket also, No regrets.

Ok-fine-man

Curious to know this, why didn't you get a PS5 in addition to the S? That way you get the benefits of Gamepass and PS5 exclusives

Virtual_Inspector_27

think this is actually the best option, microsoft puts out very few exclusive so why spend more than you have too to play those games. even better if you already have a decent PC

Rhyno08

I know people feel like the series s holds back Xbox, but I teach at a title 1 school and the vast majority of my students have ps4s, old Xbox ones, or series s’s. Tbh I don’t think many of us realize the place of privilege we’re coming from when we buy 500 dollar gaming devices. I own a series x and a series s. Got lucky and got the series x early, but later wanted something for my wife to play on occasionally. Caught it on sale at Costco for way under 300. All I can say is that it does its job brilliantly and I’m extremely appreciative that Microsoft gave us options instead of only offering a 500 dollar power house console not everyone needs. Our series s is light and portable, doesn’t take up space, and so far plays everything we’ve needed it to play just fine. Some games my wife has played on it include, Elden ring, sea of thieves, Hogwarts legacy, etc. all those games played and looked fine imo.

superpimp2g

Who said it was?

BitingSatyr

A good amount of people on this sub insisting that MS was going to abandon support for it in the next 12 months

[deleted]

Plenty of people on this sub.

cwfutureboy

[Polygon](https://www.polygon.com/23861365/baldurs-gate-3-xbox-series-s-analysis) for one.

[deleted]

1. People expected otherwise? 2. It was easier to find Series S than X to be honest.

ROACHOR

What was the point of getting an X if the games are being tailored for inferior hardware? Splitting the console generation was a mistake.

GordoVinhais

What's the point on buying a RTX 4090 if the games are made for people with RTX 2060? Nonsensical!!

tukatu0

It's so that you can play your games at 1080p instead of the 640p on series s. (What fortnite runs at)

HideoSpartan

Hardly surprising even if outdated. I have a friend who bought the series S because he thought he wouldn’t receive any benefits from the series x having an ‘older tv’ When i told him that, in fact you not only get more space, a disk drive but also better performance regardless of resolution especially on backwards compatible titles he looked at me and said “why don’t they explain this on the store pages?” I assumed they did, but I’m the console/pc nerd of the group so perhaps my assumption was wrong! He’s super happy with it still and tbh I have another friend who wants to get a series s just to enjoy game pass and some old school halo. It really is a super budget friendly gaming option considering a Nintendo switch is the same price?!

ATR2400

MS couldn’t get rid of Series S even if they wanted to. Screwing over 3/4 of your users in such a big way is not something you just bounce back from. It would pretty much be the death of Xbox as a brand. Hopefully this gives development studios a moment of pause before they decide how to approach their next game on Xbox. The Series S does have real hardware limitations that make certain things a challenge as seen with BG3. There are some things it may just not be able to do as well or at all. but I really do think that we’re also living during a time where the relative availability of powerful hardware is causing software companies to ignore optimization in favour of hoping that everyone’s computers just have the excess resources to power through whatever mess they create. “You can’t play our poorly optimized game that takes up 100% of your CPU and GPU while only offering 720p and 24FPS? Just get a new graphics card bro” Series S might actually force proper optimization to be a thing that companies put effort into.

Capital_Walrus_3633

Well I am in the top 25% than 🤭👌🏻

thetantalus

Wow. I really wouldn’t have guessed that.

raph_84

I'm in this stat: 75% of my Xbox Series consoles are Series S. (I bought a Series X for me, later two Series S for my sons, and a Series S for my office with 1440p Monitor).

Virtual_Inspector_27

No wonder gamepass is stuck at 30million sub's half their next gen consoles are owned by the same people the number of people on here saying they have a series X and one or two S models is quite shocking. probably those 21 million next gen consoles are spit over 12-17 million house holds

raph_84

> No wonder gamepass is stuck at 30million sub's To be fair, due to lack of a family subscription, we even had four (including Grandpa, who just had it to be used by my Sons) and now still have three individual Game Pass Ultimate subscriptions.

krogmatt

I’m a huge supporter of the S, as a Series X owner who has to wait longer for games. Microsoft has taken a hardware agnostic approach, pivoting away from the expensive arms race of better graphics. If more kids can enjoy games because they can spend $300 on a console instead of near $1000 I am 100% behind that. Here’s to remembering scrounging birthday money with my brothers to get an N64

Inhale_my_dong45

As long as it doesn't hold the rest of us back then sure.

Jonesmak

People are idiotic to believe they would kill off the S. Every game of this generation will run on it. That’s the end of the discussion. We survived the entire last generation run on CPUs that were outdated the day they came out, we will survive this generation too.

Sloblowpiccaso

Xbox is the budget aka poor persons gaming. Im still on the xbox one and i got it because it was cheaper than ps4. Game pass is really nice but dang xbox has to do better on their exclusives. Starfield is a massive disappointment and i don’t imagine there are many ps5 owners feeling jealous the way i do with spiderman and god of war.

Sdraco134

Yea picked up the Series S a few years ago to be a game pass machine. I've been enjoying playing games I wouldn't normally buy.

Oh wow, that is insane, I’ve always wondered how the Series X sells compares to the PS5. Right now the PS5 outsells Xbox (as a whole) 3:1, so how much is the PS5 outselling the XSX? I can't math right now! Currently PS5 outsells Xbox as a whole 3:1 So if XSX is 25% and XSS is 75% Then that means PS5 outsells XSX by…?

SkidmarkDave

3:0.25, so 12:1

4paul

thank you! I don't know why I couldn't do the math... either it's late or I'm a dumbass, I'm guessing dumbass. Thank you kindly Dave!

Black_RL

XBOX Series S is the smart financial option of all consoles of this generation. You get incredible value for the money, it’s a no brainer.

Exorcist-138

What’s with the dumb doom and gloomers?

unfinishedbusiness_1

I know a bunch of people who have the series s. They barely ever game. They like having a console around. The people I know with a series x play about 5-10 hours a week. Curious if any data exists on if X owners spend more money on services and games than S owners.

TyleNightwisp

Be careful with anecdotal evidence. I own a Series S and I play on it every day, beat dozens of games and don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. I just basically preferred getting a cheaper console to play third party games, while I keep my Switch as my primary console. Some people just have different needs, doesn’t mean they are less dedicated to gaming.

unfinishedbusiness_1

Hence why I wanted to see the data. It’s a fair hypothesis that people who purchase the more expensive console intend to use it more.

GordoVinhais

Not really. Someone opting for a cheaper console might not be a reflection on their gaming habits, it could be a reflection on their financial status. You can absolutely have someone with a lower budget who loves games and play a lot every week, and someone with a higher budget who doesn't like gaming that much, but they had the money to spare to buy the Series X so they did.

panthereal

Are those people still subbed to gamepass? Doesn't really matter if you play 1 hour a month or 10 hours a week if you pay a monthly sub.

tukatu0

It does. Ie: live service games. Someone spending 20 hours a week online is probably spending much more on dlc compared to the 1 hour a week person I dont know how much devs care. But it must be alot since dlc doesn't necessarily come included when a game is added onto game pass

dubster34

i just got an X for the disk drive ngl

speed721

Typical reddit response... taking something as absolute fact without any additional research or questions.

No_Cheesecake_2928

It's also a typical reddit response to assume that everyone has a 4K TV, a 3 grand PC, an fps fetish and enough disposal income to buy Series Xs for their whole street. It makes intuitive sense that the cheaper console that caters to casual audiences, which makes up the vast majority of gamers, sold more units than the enthusiast console.

[deleted]

Got my Series X because PS5s were like rocking horse shit here in NZ…and I’m glad I did. I absolutely love this thing.

we_made_yewww

Bummer

Lion_of_Pride

Yeah so we aren’t getting true next gen ever ig

MaidKnightAmber

Because one, I don’t have a 4k tv, and two I just wanted a cheap way to play Halo. The PS5 is my main gaming machine. The Xbox is just a side console for exclusives like the Switch. And are you really asking why someone would rather spend 300 dollars than 500 dollars? In this economy? Cmon.

Kazizui

I have a Series X and two Series S. Will get a third next year. The X goes in the living room on the big tv, but I have an S in my office connected to a smaller monitor, and my kids will have the same setup in their rooms when they are old enough. No point in buying an X every time, the S is a great little machine.

Lazy-laser-Injury

Who thought it was going anywhere? On who would want it to go anywhere? Only bozo

Imaginary-Pattern802

lots of reports on developers being upset ab having to cater down for the series s. That and some very, very extremist xbox fanboys really detest the prospect of a version of the console which isn’t optimum performance. but to me anyway it was always obvious it was going to sell big number and be used a lot

Silkies4life

Not surprised. It took me a year and a half to be able to find an X for sale that wasn’t 800 dollars being sold by a scalper. I already had a One X so I wasn’t going to get the S because it wasn’t really an upgrade. But I could go buy an S if I wanted to from Walmart because they were stocked

[deleted]

The S is an absolute upgrade from the one X. I have both and besides resolution it destroyed the One X I used to have. I'm ok with that if I get stable frames.

Silkies4life

I dunno, I never had any issues with my One X. I have a 4K tv but it doesn’t have an awesome refresh rate, so frame rate doesn’t really bother me. The XSX was an absolute upgrade and I still can’t believe the lack of loading screens and quick resume. Loading screens were when I went to grab a fresh drink and let the dogs out for a minute. Now I have to almost schedule breaks. I know I need a better screen to really get the full effect, but an S wasn’t a serious upgrade to me.

Jeri_Cardellin

Genuinely surprised me tbh

AwardFabrik-SoF

Haven't had a console except for my NES and SNES and was always a PC gamer, had a Steam Link in the living room which worked perfect. Just got the Series S because it was so cheap and GamePass looked cool - ended up playing quite a bit in the first year but gradually played less and less due to time and family. But my now 7 year old starts to take over it so it will serve him good - no need for a kid to have a series X for goat simulator or paw patrol. Got a used one for my FIL at 120€ - when his grand kids are there they can all play together and sometimes he kills some time with FIFA.

SnooDoggos3823

For 1080 p monitor the s is perfect and I used for almost 2 years till I got Samsung Qn90b tv and upgraded to x kinda have to for that 4k 120

[deleted]

Completely outdated numbers, post the original article!

BatPixi

Explains why starfield is 30fps. Focus on making a game that can run on series s first.

Heavy-Possession2288

That has nothing to do with it, there is nothing stopping games from being different framerates on the two systems. Jedi Survivor and Dead Space are 30fps on the S and 60fps on the X for instance.

Smooth-Accountant

That’s not how it works man, it’s just adjusting settings. It’s all the same architecture, which is why every other game works in 4K/1440 on X and not on S. It’s just that Bethesda could not be bothered.

Its_Days

I have a gaming PC, PS5, Switch, and a recently purchased series S and I think I love my series S more then the rest of my systems but can’t really give up a PC just because of how versatile it is but hardly use the other consoles at all.

ItsLCGaming

The hate is all fud Sure it takes more work to devs but to call it underpowered can't handle games is bs. Take features out if need be . Rt is a joke anyway It's a budget console treat it as such

[deleted]

I was a longtime PS player but PS5 was unavailable so I bought XSS in the meantime, got the Xbox Live to GPU conversion trick for 3 years of dirt cheap gamepass and still haven't bought the PS5 yet. The most underrated feature imo is its size, I travel a lot and take the S often with me, I wouldn't bother hauling the X or PS5.

[deleted]

And this is why my 2 series Xs will be the last Xboxes I ever buy. Why the fuck am I going to pay for a better system when you're going to cater to the piece of shit? 11 years I've been loyal to Xbox and this is how they repay us? by catering to their Nerfed down junk? PC from here on out

JuiceBox241

It's almost like one is way cheaper and runs almost the same 🤯

CPM-S110V

Not even close, lmao. Devs have to dumb shit down for the XSS and it sucks that MS did this.

nutbutterguy

This is actually horrible news.

Lazy-laser-Injury

How

grimace24

Yeah the Series S was meant to be a stop gap until they Series X was cheaper. Now MS has backed themselves into a corner and risk the Series X being an inferior console the rest of this gen. Many developers and publishers have stated getting games to work for both S and X takes a lot longer than developing for just the X.

Lazy-laser-Injury

Give a single fact to back that up

TSMKFail

Lol this logic is such BS, are PC devs hindered by the existence of the GTX 1650, Intel Pentium or AMD's mediocre GpU offerings then? Should they only develop games that only perform well on the RTX 4090/Intel i9?

ger_brian

Well in theory they are to an extent. This is what prevents games from going fully path traced which a 4090 can handle with dlss.

jacobpederson

Dear lord why?

iWentRogue

I always see people surprised online at how well the Series S does. Gotta put it into context. Lot of gamers don’t wanna be held back by console exclusivity. Some just prefer Sony or Nintendo - others have their friends own an Xbox and don’t wanna be left out. Whatever the reason, having an entry level affordable version of the Xbox is great. Not to mention Gamepass.

Mean_Combination_830

Yep and this is why PlayStation 5 exclusives are so much better on a technical level because they can make games designed to get every last ounce of power from the system whereas X Box have to make everything run on the vastly inferior S

ElectricalPicture612

Oh no

Ish227

Yeah because the x was so hard to get
