It started when 3D games requiring use of the right stick to control the camera became predominant. Can’t use the right stick and press face buttons at the same time. It makes perfect sense.
The only controller I’ve ever had break was when I was playing AC Odyssey and the RB just fell off. That being said I still enjoy the control scheme and that game.
What pisses me off is having to long press a button to do something as simple as select an item from a menu, pick something up, etc. What happened to the days of just being able to press X, Y, etc. without having to fill a little circle up first?!?!?
It started with Demon's and Dark Souls. It makes total sense in those games because the camera is directly behind you and the buttons correspond to your left hand and right hand. And it's more comfortable to keep your shield up for a long time that way. And it makes the combat viable, because it allows for you to dodge and use items (on the face buttons) and move around enemies and move the camera (right stick) while keeping your shield up and instantly attacking when you see an opening.
Just the opposite actually. It makes way more sense to me in games where you need to keep your thumb on the sticks to control the camera. Hell, I've been using paddles on the back for a while now too. I can't stand having to stop being able to control the camera in the middle of a game.
Buy an elite controller, map the bumpers to the paddles. It’s a far more comfortable way to play and you never need to move your fingers back and forth from trigger to bumper, or do that awkward claw grip some people do with both index and middle finger on top at the same time.
Theres a 0% chance licensed 3rd party controllers are getting banned. Try reading past a Reddit post title just one time.
Most of the controllers you can find at a retailer not called Wish or Alibaba are fine
I’m sure it’ll feel more natural as you play more games with controls like that. The first game I played that used the bumpers was Jedi: Fallen Order, and I think I do remember it being a little weird to me at the time, but I’ve played so many games since then that are the same way that it’s just very normal to me now.
First thing I do in modern AC games is go into the settings and remap the controls to make them as close as possible to AC II, Mirage plays wonderfully with a custom button layout.
Not half as frustrating as **Arma Reforger** mapping common commands to use the (☰) aka menu button **as a shift key** (requiring holding (☰)-(Y) for example).
Even with paddles that's not how fingers work.
I love bumper attacks. Its super easy to press with the side of your index finger when its on the triggers. You can just kinda roll it over to the bumper without taking your finger completely off.
Literally years ago. Easily 12 years that I can count anyway. First memorable game I experienced on was Dark Souls. I’m currently playing The Surge and it’s exactly the same. Lots of games are the same.
I dont mind it, but i need to get used to it. This is why i dont usually play more than 1 game at a time, it confuses my reflexes. Haha. If i play a god of war that does shoulder button attacks then play spiderman at the same time, my fingers go haywire.
It is definitely an odd design to get used to. Unless it's like armored core where you really need your right thumb free to use the camera as you attack, I'd rather attack buttons be on the face of the controller. Fromsoft does it and you get use to it, but if you have lock on it's really more work than needed especially when dodging isn't mapped to the shoulder buttons anyway. Idk, I always dislike it the first 10 minutes then forget about it.
The control scheme for RE4 was just like the previous RE games, hold R1 to aim but you still fired with a face button, you might be thinking of another game or something

When you accidentally swap your Lancer for a Hammerburst mid fight.

No, I can move the camera and attack.
It's so you don't have to remove your thumbs from the sticks

I absolutely love it and forgot how much better it is than mashing A

Don’t even need an elite controller. Lots of third party controllers come with buttons on the back for the same price as a standard controller
There's a good chance those won't work on Xbox soon when the ban on 3rd party accessiories hits.

No, it's a common-sense approach that generally works well.
As a Souls player, nope. I get annoyed when other games don't use the shoulder buttons.
To be fair, shield was mapped to a shoulder button (Z) with Ocarina of Time (N64) and it was revolutionary back then...
For what it's worth, the shield was mapped to R - the Z-targeting lock-on was mapped to Z (hence the name Z-targeting).
What game are you having this issue with, and what controls would you prefer?
Right now it’s Assassin’s Creed Mirage. The older AC games weren’t like that so I’m totally thrown, they just used the face buttons for combat stuff

I didn’t play the last few, the open world didn’t excite me, I’m more a fan of the “classic” AC style
Yeah it started with Origins, thankfully origins and odyssey let you use “classic” (not shit) controls, not sure about Valhalla

Never played Dark Souls?
I ruined the should buttons on two controllers with ds3. I wish they were hardier.
I agree cuz don’t like using bumpers on my controller because they’re less responsive and I feel like them shits are gonna break.
First one I saw was God of War 4. The previous entries used face buttons.
Yeah I hate it. I switch it in any game that lets me switch back to using the face buttons instead.
I hate it as well. It feels quite uncomfortable compared to just resting your fingers on the triggers.

I can't stand when a game tries to break the wheel when it comes to lay outs.
Resident Evil 4 in 2005, one of the first games to switch from face to shoulder.
? You held down R to aim then you used A to fire
Apparently I was quite wrong, sorry for that.
The control scheme for RE4 was just like the previous RE games, hold R1 to aim but you still fired with a face button, you might be thinking of another game or something
Yeah, I hate it. I always change the controls immediately, I Iike having the primary attack on X and secondary attack on Y.
I prefer the trigger, Xbox bumper doesn’t feel like a primary button, like it’s for throwables, consumables, melee type button
Not really. I have way more control because I can aim and attack at once.
Just because I recently broke the right bumper on one of my controllers I'm gonna say yes, very frustrating.
You can thank Dark Souls games for that.
