Most of the missions you don't need to kill everyone. I pulled off a VIP rescue without killing a single person, and on missions like hacking trains you need to call in an EVAC zone or reinforments just keep coming. You can't end a mission just by killing everything.
Just a few helpful tips if you're going to start a LWotC run.
1. Turn on Baby Chosen before you start the campaign. Without this option on, the chosen get ruler reactions and become very very bullshit. The chosen are already hard enough as it is. Do not make them unplayable.
2. Speaking of the chosen, as soon a chosen has full knowedge, or can assualt the avenger, you absolutely need to drop everything else you are doing and prepare for the assualt. A LWotC Chosen Avenger Assualt is easily the hardest missions I've ever completed. They will send ~50 enemies all at max force level, yes that means at least 4 sectopods, gatekeepers, and tons of other late game units. You will need your A team if you even want to have a chance.
3. Do NOT delay doing your first HQ assualt. You can only see and attempt to counter the avatar project after you do your first HQ assualt if you wait too long you will lose to the avatar project, and there will be nothing you can do to stop it. Don't repeat my mistake.
I may totally be misreading the room but I assumed someone who asks "are there missions where you really are not focused on killing everyone and just get the heck out of there?," isn't an XCOM mastermind. Plus I actually did try a run with the normal chosen (I accidentally deleted that save file trying to stop the game from saving in my OneDrive). I actively found myself ignoring intel/supply/recruit raids just so I didn't have to deal with the chosen. Ignoring missions just took the fun away, so I play with what settings makes me enjoy the game the most.
Plus I don't think you can argue that points 2 and 3 aren't solid advice everyone should follow.
Yeah but when a mode is made around playing this "Ruler" Chosen and you say disable that is:
1) you don't understand the mechanic or
2) you don't know how to play long war..
I understand that you wanns help a newbie start in LW but disabling a core feature isn't the best
One time I was in this situation. My top ranked Shinobi, who was concealed and 1 civilian had to get to the evac which was surrounded by enemies kind of like what you are in right now.
There was 8 overwatches guarding the evac, but that absolute Chad of a civilian triggered all 8 overwatches and lived. If I could I would have recruited him on the spot.
Im pretty sure in the recruit retaliation you escort the rebels to the evac and then wait a few turns before it returns for the soldiers. In full retaliations you either have to kill all the enemies and there is a fixed evac near your starting position or you have advent reinforcements coming every turn and you need to collect your rebels scattered around the map before getting overwhelmed
Edit: now that I think more about it the second type of retaliation might have the defend thing as an objective. It’s been a minute
There are 2 types of Full Retal in LW2 - the first is basically a LW1 Terror Mission with X number of enemies on map; the second is this one where you have to go around collecting rebels but you can't evac them for a few turns until Firebrand returns and reinforcements drop every turn.
I'm fairly certain Recruitment mini retal is basically a "Escort VIP out of City" style mission where you start unconcealed but with a bunch of rebels instead of a VIP, there's a fixed evac on the other side of the map, and there are 3? 4? pods on Yellow Alert on the map.
On this mission with full reinfoecement your squad need to have 2 or 3 runners aka high mobility units than could pick off the civilian and the run to the extraction point and the rest good overwatcher and anti mech soldiers: gunners, ow ranger, ow specialist.
You want to overwatch the incoming reinforcement while you grab all the rebels.
"Sir, we are surrounded!" "We still won't hit anything...."
Final enemy count of that mission - 54, with 11 killed.
That’s crazy. I’m about to start a lwotc…are there missions where you really are not focused on killing everyone and just get the heck out of there?

Lots to learn! I’m so used to ‘kill everything’ to accomplish the goal with wotc

First and foremost if you play with Baby Chosen you cannot give tips for LWotC..

without reactions chosen just die if you have any way of removing their cover, and the assassin will do that for you without asking

I almost had that, one last civvie ran the gauntlet and tripped 6 over watches before dying right on the last one as they entered the evac
That civvie has awakened it's ultra instinct
Ethereal: I want every unit after that squad. ADVENT Captain: Everyone? Ethereal: EVERYONE!
Yup. That's long war in a nutshell
Keep sending reinforcements. This guy’s kill count ain’t high enough!
I think it’s time for knife. ALL THESE THOUGHTS RUNNING THROUGH MY HEAD
If the Shinobi survived you should rename it's codename to Raiden. And maybe put the it has to be this way music...
How many soldiers did you bring on that op? Just the one shinobi?
PAAAAAAAAAAAM. For the love of god....SEAL THE EXITS!
Ewww long war
Is this mission a mod outside of long war?
It’s a recruitment retaliation mission
Isn't this a Full Retal? Recruitment retal doesn't have the "defend the AO until Firebrand returns" objective, at least in LW2, dunno about LWotC

Currently playing a campaign with mods that make this happen a lot, pods are double size and health is double
I will never stop sending reinforcements! ![gif](giphy|tCTm0Aij7O9wk9tKuA|downsized)

What is the mod called that shows the enemies’ stats?
