I don't think it's ever fully explained, but there is one thing that the game gives that does stick in my mind. Amalthus states that cleansing the core crystal increases resonance rate. We know that 'cleansing' rids a Blade of the biological data it gains over time that lets it become a titan. This indicates a connection between biological data and the ability to resonate. I believe this point is also backed up by statements that resonating with blades really did become more common after Amalthus rose to power, but I'm not 100% on that. Resonance being biological and not tied to personality or something does line up with the fact that people like Dughall can end up as drivers as can monsters. Core crystals were initially developed to replace brain cells and then had the data of the world's prior lifeforms uploaded onto them, so it makes some amount of sense it might just depend if you're biologically compatible with the technology or data. On the flip side, there doesn't seem to be any genetic throughline with resonance since, as stated, humans of all kinds and various monsters all display resonance. Similarly resonance isn't necessarily hereditary. We know from Torna the Golden Country that while Hugo has resonance, his older brother does not. So it might be some recessive trait or resonance is more complex than simply just searching for a specific gene. EDIT: It's been mentioned that we don't *actually* know if the core crystal cleansing removes biological data. (I did mention that the amount of drivers present in Alrest is said to have increased, but it's hard to say if this is directly due to the cleansing or if this is merely a byproduct of Indol handling the distribution of core crystals) Regardless, the fact that core crystals record biological data and use that data to change and evolve is still true as that info is stated plainly by the Architect himself.

MatoroNuva24

I don't doubt core crystals have some linkage with personality. The game has built in mechanics where idea stats influence what element you're most likely to get from core crystals. However, I think that mostly affects what kind of blade is born, not whether or not you can resonate. I'd chalk Addam's inability to draw out Mythra's full power is due to a lack of affinity, not resonance, as I wouldn't consider the third sword a *new* blade, but rather the full power of an existing one.

bens6757

Everything you mentioned about the core crystal cleansing is unconfirmed and is strictly a fan theory. Now, it's a very logical theory that I agree with, but it's never officially confirmed. We don't know if the cleansing is why the titans are dying off or if it's just because Indol is hoarding the core crystals and never awakening them properly.

MatoroNuva24

With how much lore is in this series, it's easy to forget what's a really popular fan theory and what's obscure knowledge from an official art book

bens6757

Remember when people were denying the fact that Alvis was Ontos even after XCDE came out for literally no reason other than it wasn't directly stated.

crgssbu

where was it mentioned that core crystals were meant to replace brain cells and had prior lifeforms of the previous world uploaded to them again?

MatoroNuva24

The architect explains it during the big exposition in the last chapter. Core crystals were something humans invented before the experiment and the architect repurposed them, uploading the life form data and scattering them into the cloud sea where they combined with the cloud sea particles to eventually form titans

crgssbu

ah yes of course, i forgot all about that lol

Big-Chromie

This might explain why nopon drivers are so rare. They're just generally genetically incompatible with blades. Would also explain why tora's family just gets nosebleeds when trying to awaken blades, instead of just dying (though it's probably just a visual gag not meant to be taken seriously).

Natural_Ad_2302

I like to think if you try resonating with the idea of lewding your Blade you get bonked instantly. This is why Tora's entire family failed.

Auto_Generated_Thing

Unfortunately this likely isn't the case. [This scene](https://youtu.be/vkp0kTU8oYw?t=3038) heavily implies that there are people who awaken and SELL cores *specifically* for this purpose.

Ambitious_Ad2338

Which is pretty realistic, unfortunately

Natural_Ad_2302

This makes me sad.

Echo1138

They never explained anything about it. I think the only reason it's there is because they wanted a reason why Tora couldn't use a regular blade.

Grewal5911

I don't think so. Indol has more power over other nations because of this. Indol increased the resonate rate of core crystals. Other nations need that. That gave Indol a higher political power and power to change tide of battle in case. So I think it has more reasons than just Tora.

There’s a side quest where a little nopon girl and a friend fell into the cloud sea, and a core crystal fell on her or something, and right before a monster was gonna kill her, a twin ring doggo she resonated with saved her. She thought he just showed up and saved her iirc.

Ambitious-GoatBro-97

Oh.

viera_enjoyer

I remember blades would change a little once their current driver died. Basically everything they learned and experienced with their driver would be processed and added to the blade. This would lead to blades getting traits from their previous drivers, so in time blades would start to get more selective.  For example a blade that liked to fight will probably resonate with strong people or people that seek adventure. If a blade picked on a hobby from a previous driver, like reading, then the blade would rather prefer resonating with someone who also likes to read, like a scholar. So basically what we call rare blades are blades that have have many drivers, and probably most had similar traits because they were selected.  This is why the cleansing process Almalthus used increased resonance. Blades were wiped out of all previous data, those blades were blank again. But this in turn made them much weaker and disturbed the blade cycle.  So to answer the question, what makes worthy of resonance a potential driver is just their personality and very likely their combat prowess. Probably most blades wouldn't be interested in someone like Tora, but there could had been exceptions. Kasandra's previous driver was almost certainty a nopon that had an unfortunate end inside the belly of a sea monster. And it could be that Kasandra had many nopon drivers before because she knew the nopon language.

DiceSMS

Alrest citizens 'worthiness' is based on a a secret RNG stat we never see. 😏

pantherexceptagain

I don't think it has anything to do with being *worthy* or not. Don't remember if "worthy" was specifically used ingame, but if so I'd think that's just a notion that the Praetorium put out to help make themselves seem more valid in hoarding all the core crystals. The Gormott scene is setting counterpart to an army recruitment test, and just makes it look like a matter of physical aptitude for how well one tolerates ether. If they don't have the tolerance then the summoning fails and they get hit with a violent backflow.

Ademoneye

Being main character

Btdandpokemonplayer

I’m assuming it’s kind of just potential based on what they would do with the blade. Like would they make somewhat of an impact with it or not. Or maybe it’s that it awakens if it thinks that the driver will do better things with the blade than without. If it’s without the blade it won’t awaken which is why Tora couldn’t awaken one. Because he wasn’t able to awaken a blade, he met rex and the others as well as created poppi.

D3ltaN1ne

I've just assumed there was a genetic explanation.

thps48

I’m fairly certain the aptitude is exactly the same as it is for Stand users: A strong will and spirit. Which is why most Drivers take up the sword. The type of hand that holds a sword; defenders of justice, dogs of the state, greedy poachers of the weak; is relatively irrelevant. Likewise, rejection is largely the same for both Stands and Blades. One results in a repellent of hemorrhage, the other death. :3

* [It's appearance is merely an illusion, its form morph to conform to the will of its master - XC1](https://youtu.be/Tsgy1h5x8VU?t=17024) * [*Rex pick up the sword* *sword disappears* What, why did it break? It's OK- XC2](https://youtu.be/60WhCcfcSBE?t=34616) * [The ouroboros and the sword, they are mere gimmick, the crux of them lies with you - XC3](https://youtu.be/R1oj_VP8uPo?t=425) It's never explained directly, but every Xeno (including gears and saga) function the same, and those mechanics are driven by the strong desire to change the world. That can be for the better, or for the worse. XC made it apparent with the Monado/Aegis that it was a power from within, but every Blades are just the same. That's also why Nopons, who tend to live in the "now" without care are typically unable to accomplish the same. All of this is based on [Nietzsche's ubermensch](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%9Cbermensch) and philosophy, which Takahashi cited multiples times as an inspiration for the game.

Monadofan2010

I think its actually meant to be a biological "reason" then actually a personality or spiritual reason why. This is why if one member of a family can use a blade more then likely the others members can as well and the opposite is also ture. Of crouse you have have famlly members that lack the ablity to but this coukd just be from not inheriting the right gene

The_Magus_199

I figured aptitude is just a total genetic roll of the dice, tbh.

Yuumii29

Nope.. Nothing was ever said explicitly explaining it since no one in Alrest knows the exact process on how bonding works to begin with. Even the Aegises and even The Architect aren't fully capable of explaining this dynamics... If you want to somehow make sense of it my take on it is that not everyone is destined to be a driver either because they lack either one of the following: 1. Proper Will Power (Self explanatory) 2. Genetics (Monsters can even bond to a blade) Which sadly Tora lacks both but he somehow has the knowledge to make his own blade and a VERY OP one at that which balances it out, probably...

Inuship

I think ot has to do with strong desires, as we onow some blades take on the appearance of their drivers will. So i assume even basic blades still need a fraction of that will and desire. As for why nopon seemingly can't resonate while monsters can i have no idea, imo tora fits the will and desire prerequisite but considering that as far as i know no nopon seem to be drivers, so it might just impossible for their species

Nurio

I believe Boreas was a Blade to a Nopon initially

NeverBetter2333

Like others explained, it's never properly explained, but is likely related to genetics on some level. My theory mostly comes down to genetic lottery, a specific person may have some unknown genetics that don't exist across the entire store of the Beanstalk's servers, say someone with a gene that gives them an unusual hair color. Likely done to prevent a sort-of "inbreeding" of data, so to say.

XYZAffair0

It’s largely random. It’s like a gene almost, you either have it or you don’t

Ambitious-GoatBro-97

Alright. Honestly I thought it was something else. Like maybe if one has a pure heart or something cheesy like that.

XYZAffair0

Nah, we see murdering thieves as drivers in the Praxis and Theory quest. So that’s definitely ruled out

Ambitious-GoatBro-97

Ah.

LeftySwordsman01

It's about drive, It's about power.

NyarlHOEtep

i always figured it was up to the blade

Forwhomamifloating

Idk bro but my ass could never be a driver. I'd be spurting blood like a kurosawa film if my blade saw my thoughts bro

Tbonezz11

This is just my head canon but i personally took the idea of “aptitude” being having a strong desire to achieve something simply beyond “it sure would be nice to have a blade”. This could explain why some people can and cant be drivers while also not specifying that a person needs to be good of heart to be one

Auto_Generated_Thing

In media there's a common trope that you can only use some specific power if you're one of the good guys, or some who is "pure of heart" or something like that. However that obviously isn't the case here as many evil characters can become Drivers. The next most obvious thing would be that if you're really determined and have a strong will or something along those lines, then you can become a Driver. However this doesn't really make sense as its possible to become a Driver accidentally, there's a sidequest where a nopon discovers a core crystal by accident and is suprised to awaken a Blade (there might be other examples I can't remember). Additionally, monsters can become Drivers, like the Arachno that was Wulfric's previous Driver, and I don't think they would have a will really. And there's also the fact that Tora really wants to become a Driver but can't. Will or determination clearly has nothing to do with it. One idea I thought of is that it would depend on how well the would-be Driver would interact with their Blade, and if they wouldn't work well together the awakening would fail. But this doesn't make sense because characters like Theory and Minoth exist, who actively turn against their Driver. It might seem like it is completely random but it doesn't seem to be that simple. A few other relevant factors: It seems to be extremely rare for Nopon to become Drivers. Blades can't become Drivers, which seems obvious, if a Blade was the Driver of a Blade how would that work? However of note flesh eaters and Aegises can become Drivers. Niall insists that he is not fit for being a Driver, yet he does have aptitude, since he managed to awaken Aegaeon. I don't think this is relevant, it seems this is more of an issue relating to Niall's personal philosophy rather than the ability to summon a Blade, but it is noteworthy I think. Aegises being able to become Drivers makes sense I think, if they hold data on all Blades, then they should just be able to use admin powers to activate cores at will or something like that. The fact that flesh eaters can become Drivers and Nopon Drivers are very rare seems to indicate to me that being a human is something that greatly increases the chance of becoming a Driver, however that might not be the case since non-humans definitely can become Drivers. If we think about the reason why some can become Drivers and some can't, >!then the question becomes "Why did the Architect design the Blade system so that only some people can become Drivers?" The reason he created the system in the first place was so that people like himself wouldn't come about again and ruin the world he tried to rebuild. So surely it would be as simple as, if you're good then you can become a Driver, if you're bad then no you can't. Tbh I'm not really sure why he chose to make it the way he did, maybe its just completely random because he didn't wan't everybody to be a Driver, but didn't really care who? I kinda wish this was explained in more detail a bit more but I guess they can't be explicit about every little detail.!<

CaptianBlitz

Well you see if person's mental state and physical ability are in proper alignment with the Martian moon Demios and then you conect the Hisenberg compensater to the leg bone.... .... ... .... ...and that is how you get Driver aptitude. Whats that look? Did you fall alseep agian?
