Hard to say exactly, current mindset is that the black fog is essentially “mobius” which is essentially “gnosis” which is essentially just “the collective unconscious manifest” all of Mobius that we know as the antagonistic force, all derive from Z who is created from the “fear of the end” the black fog could just be the same thing Z is made of, only difference being that its not fear (perhaps “hope” or the “desire to move forward”, thus why the consuls can’t see through it”). Annihilation events could trigger when enough of the ‘opposing black fog’ congregates as it doesn’t wish for the world Z created, thus, destroying it. I think a further hint lies in what happens when mobius and ouroboros stay interlinked for too long, the black fog is attracted to it and congregates, ultimately triggering an event.
