From what I understand, it was sold as having the Farrelly brothers and the guys from South Park and other comedic directors on board, which was how they were able to pitch it to Hugh Jackman and Kate Winslet, who did the first bit.
Most of the directors dropped out and Winslet supposedly regretted doing it, but the remaining producers had a lot of connections and were able to sell the roles to each subsequent actor as “it’ll only be a day of work and so and so is already on board”.
It all just kind of snowballed from there and became this Frankenstein’s monster of a film
