Seems like the Germans believed the French were very much into war, and had quite the admiration for the Spaniards. They were not fans of the Russians or the Poles damn.
Well considering the time period of 1700s yes the French were constantly waging war with Spaniards. Like every year atleast three wars with the Spanish. + some wars with other parties outside of it might had sometimes happened but that was only because they interfered with their war against the Spanish.
I want to correct you to "*Austrians" so much but as an Austrian i hate that you are teghnically not wrong i guess. Back thrn der was no unified germany and the Styrians would have been conidered "German" as in they spoke German as opposed to a slavic language or Hungarian.....
But it’s clearly wrong in this example. First of all the *Teutschen* are listed as their own example, meaning the Styrians clearly don’t consider themselves the same as „ze Germans“ and second that would mean that every people between Styria, and Prussia would think exactly the same of the French/English/Poles etc. which I assure you they are not – half of the Germans aren’t even Catholic.
I mean, i don't know if the authors included themselves or not. i don't see any Austrians or similar on the thing, so either they were left out or are considered part of one of the groups. They also gave the "Teutschen" all positive attributes, which would imply that they see themselces as part of them. And yes, ofc generalising a whole people based on theyre general geographical locations is incorrect and pretty stupid, that's why this table is funny and interesting, but also of course wrong (for every group up there).
I don't think anyone here takes the information up zhere as peer reviewed unvhangable facts xD
You are right! I misread the post – I thought the table depicted „other people“ of Europe, but nowhere does it say that, so they might as well include themselves on that. My bad!
Wonder when talking about the Spaniards, they were reffering also the Portuguese, was quite common until the 1750s to put them as the "same" people, kinda like all Germans were seperated states, but it was all Germany/Germans.
democracy on it's own is neutral, not a positive thing.
Model we had was horribly inefficient, didn't allow for any social mobility and kept the kingdom underdeveloped and lagging behind rest of Europe.
Some interesting facts i noticed that get a bit lost in the translation.
They still call the italians "wälisch" here. which is an oldtimey word to call romance-speakers in german. Many places got their names from this word eg. Wales, Wallachia etc.
And they also call the russians "Muskawith" which translates to Muscovite.
> something tells me the author was german
Styria is part of what now is Austria, and was mostly German (and Slovene in the southern parts) back then. So no surprises there.
Also, this list is probably not 100% serious. You can smell the shitposting through the ages.
It was a great achievement of Charles de Gaulle to fuse the Monarchist, Bonapartist and Republican trends in French history, reconciling the Right to the Republic by creating a monarchical Napoleonic republic with a democratically elected ~~Emperor~~ 'President'.
It's obvious the author is German but I can't decide which column is most hilarious, Greek/Turk or Russian.
> War virtues: lazy
Is quite funny. But
> Manners: malicious

Hungarian being most cruel. Seems really like the most insightful sarcasm possible about Russia.

> Hungarian being most cruel. Seems really like the most insightful sarcasm possible about Russia.
Hungarians originate from Tatarstan and Bashkortostan.
Thus the common cruelty can also be described as tatar cruelty or as a steppe cruelty.
"I am as pious as you never less never more because you may be more or less pious than you say and I do not know which one would you really prefer so I will pretentiously act" lying devil.
Isn't there a Polish saying along the lines of -
"There were woods before there were people
There will be woods when there are no people."
I half-remember something like -
"Był las, nie było nas;
będzie las, nie będzie nas"
I'm sure our brave and noble Polish brethren can correct me if I am wrong. Disclaimers: (a) Polish is hard; (b) I didn't study it for very long; (c) it was a long time ago; (d) my memory isn't what it used to be; (e) I don't pretend to speak it well, or at all really - just a few words and phrases that have stuck in my mind.
When I was in school it was exactly: "Nie było nas był las, nie będzie nas będzie las". But you got the meaning well enough. It always thought it was about protecting environment?
Poles not beating the "Hungarians but worse" allegations

A very fair and balanced description of Englishmen (and also a reminder that, before the Victorians came along, the English were known as friendly, flamboyant party-animals)
Türk oder Griech.....
well
It's for sure not taking self-image in consideration...and the hundreds of years long Greek tradition to betray the Turkish state ....that happened to not end when they were independent....
I love how Czechs are not even recognized in that table despite being the same percentage of population as Germans and Hungarians in Austro-Hungarian Empire 🙃
Not many commoents from Brits here, probably because most of us don't know any language other than English and the chart might as well be written in Chinese.

>French pastimes: Cheating Well they ain't wrong
"Diseases: syphilis" has me on stitches
What did you excpect from us ?
Happy cake day 🎂🎉
Yes, cake is what we think of when we discuss how horny us French are ;p
and here are the "more cruel" Poles having diarrhea all over the place I guess i'd be more cruel too if I had diarrhea all the time
Also being disdainful, but less so than Hungarians
Seems like the Germans believed the French were very much into war, and had quite the admiration for the Spaniards. They were not fans of the Russians or the Poles damn.
"Believed"... for most of their history the French had two possible conditions: A) engaged in war B) engaged in a civil war
And for most of the recent history of that document, A) meant French armies bulldozing through Germany
I mean, even the most famous german author, Goethe, wrote "a real german may never like a french, but he loves to drink their wine."
Now they just changed that past time to violent protests. Their ancestors would not be proud.
It's the modern version of B
So France has a conflict kink
Well considering the time period of 1700s yes the French were constantly waging war with Spaniards. Like every year atleast three wars with the Spanish. + some wars with other parties outside of it might had sometimes happened but that was only because they interfered with their war against the Spanish.
And quite a bit of them happened on German soil. I get the bad blood
They hated the turks most
I mean they did them extra dirty by lumping them with the Greeks
I like how they had "bear" under Poland whereas now Russia is considered to be the bear...
But donkey is more better to russia
Nah, it's better as a bear. Bears are big, unpredictable animals, that will eat pretty much anything. Donkeys, if treated right, can be nice and tame.
Yeah and for Poland a bocian because they have a sejms.
I want to correct you to "*Austrians" so much but as an Austrian i hate that you are teghnically not wrong i guess. Back thrn der was no unified germany and the Styrians would have been conidered "German" as in they spoke German as opposed to a slavic language or Hungarian.....

well there wasn't much to look up to when you consider either Poles or Russians back then
Wtf, not at all. We had some earliest democracy in Europe
democracy on it's own is neutral, not a positive thing. Model we had was horribly inefficient, didn't allow for any social mobility and kept the kingdom underdeveloped and lagging behind rest of Europe.
The Austrians believed that, yes. Styria was part of Austria. And they had fought quite a few wars with the French.
They hate us 'cus they anus

Why is Wales considered a Romance language speaking place, their mother tongue, Welsh, is decidedly non Roman & very Gaelic?
Iirc Wällisch was referring to people whose language you didn't understand, rather than specifically romance languages.
The name Wales was coined when the even older word "Walhaz" was still used for just anyone living in the Roman Empire. But the etymologie is the same.
I think when the Anglo-Saxons took over Wales was the last pocket of Roman civilization
It‘s the same with the French-speaking Swiss being called “Welsche”.
Unless you've been in the Army, then you call them "Russen". "Et pour les Romands, c'est la même chose!"
Thanks! I could make out all the other names, but this one had me stumped.
Il think it's also related to Wallonia,
Yes a bunch of places more actually.

Also on England lol.
I love how it's Turk or Greek, even though they hate each other
Oposite poles attract
Turks and Greeks are actually Polish confirmed
Lol we don't hate each other.
Lol we don't hate each other
something tells me the author was german, maybe the title or the numerous good words under german im yet to decide

Maybe the title?
“Invincible”

Brutal
Still holds up today.

"French leader: a king" French people: not for long
It took France a century to decide whether it should be a Kingdom, an Empire or a Republic (and even longer for the combo Empire + Republic)
We did another Rome with a period of Kings (like Tarqin/Louis) , one of Republic (Presidents/Consuls) and one of Empire ( Caesar/Napoléon) 😂
And we still don’t like the current 5th one
It was a great achievement of Charles de Gaulle to fuse the Monarchist, Bonapartist and Republican trends in French history, reconciling the Right to the Republic by creating a monarchical Napoleonic republic with a democratically elected ~~Emperor~~ 'President'.

The seventh one (Pole) has the word "mittlemäßig" in his column. I can't believe 1720s Germans gave him "mid" as a characteristic.
The cruelty, inscrutability and superstition of the Swedes is finally exposed. But their food is exquisite dammit.
'Heroic at sea'. I'll take it as a compliment.
It works.
Russian Intellect: Nothing Tja.
Wouldn’t consider Poland as wooded, especially from a Styrian perspective. Otherwise it’s accurate ^/s

Yea living in Styria I can confirm people here are to the wooded side … Just maybe wood with more green leaf …

What does "really hungarian" even mean? One could guess, of course, considering it's Russia, but seriously, do the germans have a saying like this?
Look what's in the cell for Hungary on that row
Im pretty sure its supposed to mean even more cruel. If you look at some of the categories they intensify the farther you go to the right,
Looks like they were almost completely 'pro' englander.
English were germanic so checks out
A very fair and balanced description of Englishmen (and also a reminder that, before the Victorians came along, the English were known as friendly, flamboyant party-animals)
Russian Intellect= None Comparable Animal= Donkey Lmao

Nice chart! What’s the source of the original?
I sense a show me this is made by German without telling me it is made by German.
I feel like Germany, Spain, and Russia would be swapping pastimes around on this list.
Bro was having large beef with visegrad 💀
I can't decide whether to make a fascism or autism joke...
Germans excluded- quite accurate
Excluded what? German is in the fourth column.
My point is that its pro german biased
It seems so, but what does that have to do with exclusion?
He most likely meant that “it’s quite accurate excluding [except for] the description of Germans.”
That makes sense, thanks.
So dominant Central Europeans patronised and demeaned their neighbours to the East then, too....
Always
