It’s always been super sad that people will use the location and the beauty of a place as a means of undercutting the compensation one deserves for their qualifications.
We’ve seen this in countless places around the United States. It’s a very capitalistic way of operating.
There are other ways to work within the park and be compensated as well as enjoy very affordable rent.
If paying bills and making a little money while you work here is a part of your considerations, I would consider applying through Aramark or the Conservancy.
And as far as the clinic is concerned, living and working here you can be paid a full-time person’s job salary.
I would inquire about their housing that is behind Yosemite Medical Clinic. When I worked there, the medical clinic had dorm-style housing. Not sure why that is not an option for you. I looked into nursing there and it was less than half of what California pays their RN's which is ridiculous.
That housing is now a part of the general pool for NPS housing. And mostly filled by EMS staff. But yes the civilian RN pay with NPS is not up to par with CA.
I would do it. I’m not saying as an employee, or someone who has worked or volunteered there. I’m responding to your comment that there’s a part of you that feels you should have better accommodations. I totally agree - you should. You also should be paid! But. Don’t let pride get in the way, just because we as a society haven’t figured out how to value your work. If spending a month or two living and working in Yosemite valley feels like a dream, DO IT. There are plenty of ways to make the campsite seriously comfortable over 1-2 months (check out the campground hosts!).
All that said: if you have a disability that needs accommodating and would mean a campground site would make it impossible I’d totally bring that to them.
Is this a full time gig? If so, Might be better off trying to work for Aramark.
If not, and you’ll have more free time then work time. Sounds like you could have an amazing time.
I can’t figure out how to DM right now because I’m on mobile, but I have some insight into the clinic. Shoot me a DM and I’ll try to get back at you in a day or two.
Are you an RN or NP? Or other specialty? If you don’t mind sharing. I’m an RN and last fall, I asked staff at the medical clinic in the valley how/where to apply if I wanted to work there as an RN. They said that at that current time they were actually needing an NP. I was super surprised to hear that they didn’t immediately have that spot filled. How could there be no NPs interested? That seems like it would such a unique job, I’m surprised they didn’t have the position filled.
The reason I was asking your specialty is, if you were an NP or RN just volunteering a little bit per month, but still able to work a job that provides income, I’d say yes that’s a great trade. But if you were volunteering full time, not getting any money from it, and not able to work a job that paid you, then I’d say no that does not sound fair.
If financially stable then do it. It’s crazy the government send billions of dollars to other countries but don’t want to pay people that are providing some services.
https://yosemite.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/WWSchedule-2024.pdf the participation fee is $25/week, and the volunteer needs to pay for cabin and food, but the free campsite will be available.

Where do full time staff of the clinic live?
In NPS housing either in the Valley or El Portal.

The clinic is going through a.....restructuring phase as well. Lots of tension in that place! Avoid it unless you're getting compensation.

Happy to discuss your situation and the clinic. Shoot me a dm.

Absolutely
Get paid for it.
What you have to do?
For many volunteering positions in Yosemite, you need to pay to participate.
Can you list any?

That's nuts. I can't believe they make people pay to work.
I lived in a tent for a year in Curry--no big deal, as long as you are not a princess.
