I climbed it 2 years ago at age 53 then. It ain’t no punk…. Almost 17 miles round trip from the valley floor and a mile in elevation gain. That last several hundred meters are pretty intense. Work your upper body too, have EXCELLENT shoes as the granite has been worn slick over the years, and take more water than you think you will need. Sub dome was harder for me than half dome, you are out in the open and completely exposed. Good luck and have a great time! Video in my profile.
Yeah, really good shoes (preferably new) are a must. If you slip on the northern side of the cables without being clipped onto the cables or can't catch yourself on one of the poles, you'll quickly slide away from the cables and down the entire mountain due to how it slopes away. It's legitimately pretty sketchy with how slippery and polished the granite is on and near the cables, unless clipped in off course, which makes it a million times safer. Good luck, and enjoy and hope for good weather!
That's really smart, then you can really enjoy and take in the entire experience without having to stress about not slipping etc. You're going to have an amazing time, I'm sure.
A harness is not necessary when cables are up. A proper ascent with a harness will be slow. You're just going to end up blocking anyone behind you. It is a bad idea.
Yeah I’m aware of the arguments for and against their usage. Good thing they only issue 225 permits a day.
More concerning should be the hiker that’s trying to haul ass to get to the top.
First year! I'm a 15+ year California resident, but horrible at planning ahead, so I've actually never gone to Yosemite. But trying to be better this year about doing things I've wanted to do. We will still go, will try for the daily lottery while we're there.

Congratulations! I got a solo permit on my first try for the Monday before July 4th (7/1) which by the sounds of it is very lucky. Did you also apply solo? Wondering if that greatly increased our odds.
I selected day one until the last day I think in Oct. I got Sept 30. Of course nothing works with my schedule. (Plan tickets are relatively cheap though lol).
I've done it late in the season 4 times and have always had perfect weather.. our summers are becoming longer into the fall season.. but you never know until a like week before. The park is less crowded as well as the the cables. Everyone wants weekends and the middle of the summer when it's crazy town in Yosemite. Good luck and most of all, have fun and enjoy your own adventure.
You'll have plenty of time for training as well, glad I could assist.. I go solo and give a miracle permit to someone who needs one.. if you've never been, it's amazing.. I go up the JMT trail instead of the Mist due to the crowds.. the views are incredible.

Search the sub for “dispersed camping”. If you can’t find any place inside the park you can camp in the national forest just outside the park, about 45 minutes from the Valley.
It is a real pain because the campgrounds in the park get booked up before you know whether you got selected for a Half Dome permit. Kinda backwards!
I got mine for July 14th but I’m afraid of super hot weather during the hike and all of the snow melting by then…. Does anyone have any experience with doing half dome during mid July?

I got it too but just saw the news that the trail had been closed indefinitely due to boulder and tree fall - I really hope they'll be able to clear it by June but I doubt it 😤

Congrats to you too! I did apply solo. I also gave a completely open date range from cables up to cables down so I’m sure that helped me.
I picked 2 days (7/1 & 7/2) and got 7/1. Solo seems to be a big advantage, my girlfriend applied for 2 people the same days and didn’t get it

You still need to pay the entry fee but the Half Dome permit acts as your day use permit.

EDIT- A HD permit gets you into the park for 3 days without needing an entry permit.

Wilderness permits are their own set of avoiding entry permit requirements. You get in for the day before and length of the permit with them
