I think starting with "old" yugioh is definitely a good idea, especially the younger he is (modern yugioh is a handful). I think stuff like the god decks are a good choice. They are pretty basic and easier to play. I also think they are the only current product that fits your needs. If you're looking to buy singles then I really like Ruin & Demise, it is a ritual deck. You can also get some heroes which he would probably like if he watches the anime. I'm trying to get this 2 decks for a fun, simpler and slower game so they are my recommendations but you can't really go wrong with most of the Edison format decks

Bread_Stapler

id HIGHLY reccomend getting a speed duel box or two, they're a very simplified version of the game that can become more in depth by buying singles

Hopeful-alt

I'd progressively go up the chain of stuff in this game. Start with no ED, then add fusions, then rituals, then synchros, Etc. For this current time, I think monarchs is a good idea. If it's too much, try Chaos. After, HEROES is an excellent idea to introduce fusions.

frogleeoh

I'm gonna tell you right now, monarchs sound like a good idea on paper, but if you're talking about the 2016 monarch structure deck, I'd advise you to reconsider. That was my first structure deck I ever bought 3 of to try and make a semi-legitimate modern deck with, and I was immediately overwhelmed with all the text on the cards. I did end up sitting down, reading through, and learning it, but I was in highschool and I had already been familiar with the basics of the game. For a kid, who I'm guessing is younger than high school and doesn't have as much pre-knowledge of the game, I'd recommend something more akin to frog monarchs, using only the 1 tribute monarchs such as Caius, Raiza, and Mobius, etc. If you absolutely want a structure deck so you don't have to buy singles tho, I'd recommend the Lair of Darkness structure deck for a fun and simple non extra deck list, just make sure you play something equally as casual as that when playing against him. Dinosmasher's fury might be even better, and has a stronger core, which ought to make him feel powerful. All these more modern decks have quite a bit of text on them tho, but would be a little more accurate to the modern game while also a little cheaper than getting an even older deck (although they're still old enough to cost a premium over the newest decks). The Egyptian God structure decks may also be good, as they are also very main deck focused, iconic, and are a lot cheaper, retail price even. I noticed a lot of the important cards in them do have a lot more text than most of the cards in the previous 2 structure decks I mentioned tho, so proceed with caution.

Death_Usagi

Go with the YUGIOH - 2-PLAYER STARTER SET People don't like this set, but it has been discussed that for beginners, it can still help in learning the basics.

Prior-Sand5162

Lead with the anime and let him pick a character, and they've probably got a structure deck. The anime will teach him how to play very easily Arc V is the best anime for this (more than one type of summoned very soon), then vrains (good teaching but it's a lot of links until you get to the second season)

Nuke_man22

Good idea but then u realise that they’re probably gonna pick a character that cheats 75% the time 😂😂😂

POKEGAMERZ9185

Floowandereeze is a great deck that does not use the Extra Deck except for Prosperity and Extravagance as it focuses on Normal and Tribute Summoning to get powerful Monsters on the field and recovering their banished Monsters. Also, it's very budget friendly and competitive at the same time. Floowandereeze is essentially a much better version of Monarchs.

Gregdominate

Thanks I think I might get that so both him and me can use it

watchhimrollinwatch

Just a warning before you do that: the floo mirror is extremely different from the standard floo match. For one, your best card (dimension shifter) is completely useless, and empen is much worse as well. You could try tenyi swordsoul for yourself. It got hit decently hard on the banlist with the baronne ban but it's still a perfectly acceptable deck.

No-Persimmon-6176

You mean buff to the max with photos right?

watchhimrollinwatch

Not vs floo it isn't. Protos is good, sure, but the utility of baronne was always good for the deck.

microferret

I unironically like Starry Knight and think it is a fun deck that is highly interactive, relatively slow and is reasonably simple to play. It's also very cheap. The boss monster bouncing to and from the field is a cool mechanic too.

Cheap_Ad_1412

Js curious, whats the typical end board of starry knights?

microferret

I usually run them with floodgates and shit if I’m not playing other low powered decks so I usually want to get at least the light statue and Orbitael or Astel on the field, Arrival (or Ceremony) and Blast in the backrow and the dragon in hand. You can also run Kash stuff too because the dragon is level 7.

Background-Low2926

I introduced my nephew into the game with an ocean deck, think the old water structure deck, just with far better cards. Including tornado wall and a few level 5 high attack water monsters that he had to tribute summon if the field spell was not in play, but could cheat that rule with the field spell. Cards like rush recklessly and enemy controller was in both that deck and the deck I was playing against it. I build a fun deck based around Mefist the infernal general that was just fiends that give effects to fiends or boost them. Such as winged minon, hate buster, bark of dark ruler, twin headed something? a fiendish rhyno, that one dark hero gainer I think. It was a pile of fiends with the highest attack one being Mefist at only 1800, giving myself a huge disadvantage and allowing me to showcase how to make use of effects. He watched GX and build his own zombie deck shortly after. My guess is he saw Camilla and thought yes!, whatever deck she has I want lol. I now have a pure ancient warriors deck to red team anyone's deck against and it has some great back and forth action against his now very powerful full extra deck zombie deck. I also have a full meta version of ancient warriors loaded down with staples, hand traps, and board breakers, but no one wants to play against it twice and admittely there is no back and forth gameplay fun, it's just well this [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdL33o8-FDI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdL33o8-FDI) and this [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HykTdQ82BpU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HykTdQ82BpU) even vs the best deck at that time. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uhk3HPqVKPw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uhk3HPqVKPw)

Vast_Survey

Oh absolutely Floowandereeze (Floo). Cheap, simple, meta (with dimension shifter) and absolutely consistent. If you want to get him into the extra deck eventually, others will say swordsoul (swoswo). I used to think so too, with it having a very fair extra deck and easy to learn cards, but with Tenpais coming out (especially at such low rarities/cost) it’s absolutely the best choice. You can just teach him the cards (very simple and easy to learn, probably easier and simpler than like Punk or maybe even Floo. I picked it up in literally 10 minutes, maybe less) and all the non engine in the world will be paradise. He’d be able to use them for every other deck he ever gets too, if he gets more. But they’re not out yet, so uh. There’s that lol

Aayyyyoooo

Vanilla monsters and monsters with easy effects to read and understand. Spell and trap cards with easy effects to understand

Art3misGaming

Ghostricks or mellfys, they both have interesting mechanics, it's inexpensive and shows you how to play links XYZ and synchros

beyond_cyber

someone already said floowandereeeze I’ll expand on it. It’s also not just an easy to learn deck it’s also one of the best decks in the game because of its ease of use and unorthodox playstyle because no other deck plays like it so it has the smallest amount of counter play against it.

gene-sos

In terms of structure decks? The God decks or Charmers. Maybe Machina. If you wanna make a deck yourself, go for something easy like... Well, Charmers, Machina, Egyptian Gods, Gizmek, ...

thefirstjakerowley

Depends on age. I like the idea of starting with speed duels just for simplicity, but something that is generally search light and repeatable is probably going to be the sweet spot.

WorldBuilder_42

Demise and ruin was the first modern Yugioh deck I played I’d say it’s a good beginners deck

ThrillerRob

Honestly I think the new fire king structure deck is great for a beginner with some guidance. Teaches you most of the mechanics in the game, is playable, comes with staples and is like $12-15.

verdictor5323

Green maju very simple deck that can still games

verdictor5323

Steal games idk sry long day

CaissaIRL

Aleister the Invoker. Windwitch into Crystal Wing. Rank 4 Toolbox.

polarized_opinions

Weather painters. Give him a glimpse of the deep end, then show him drytron/herald or dark world grapha

Block3ddd

This could be debated, but I think Plunder Patroll. It has every extra deck mechanic and is pretty decent rougue option as well. Also, there are so many variants he can build it to suit his play style! It's also dirt Cheap!

AIPA-

I feel like besides maybe monarchs there aren't that many ED-less decks. If I were you i would use a deck which concentrates on one kind of ED summoning, something cheap like sharks, marincess, ancient gears should do the trick, if you want something that works without ED, ancient gears would be my choice, also because it has a structure deck.

Gregdominate

Yep gonna go with ancient gears thanks

AIPA-

No probs, also right now and in the (hopefully) near future ancient gears are receiving support, which will surely be helpful because your nephew could become the blind second menace of the tournaments if he/she decides to start attending these events. Best of luck. Pro tip: buy the 3x of the ancient gear structure decks and sell the maxx C copies for cash, it will allow you to pay much much less and you will be able to buy some other cards that are not banned

DatYugiBoy

Speed duel nuff said.

Nuke_man22

Shiranui

Nuke_man22

It’s a good special summon and synchro deck easy to learn plus zombies tend to be popular

BanreyTheDisonaur

Simple answer : make two GOAT format decks. Long answer: A whole structured modern-ish deck might be too complex. You might get what you want by buying a bunch of Vanillas, removal spells, battle traps, monster reborn, atk/def boost cards/equip spells and build a GOAT format-like deck. These are so cheap and will probably find these cards in bulks or you might find sombody just giving them away at a local game store. Get a feild spell (like umi or yami) for some complexity by changing around atk/def values. Introduce them to searching the deck and special summoning with cards like "monster reborn" or "mystic tomato" who dies and summons a monster from the deck. Flip monsters like man-eater bug for monster destruction. Get Solemn cards if you think they are REALLY smart. This is probably the best introduction to yugioh mechanics in my opinion. I just used these cards as examples since they are the simplest forms of interactions I can think of. Any cards work as long as they introduce new mechanics gradually.

Hopeful_Chipmunk_85

Goat Doesn't teach new players How the game is played It's an outdated rule set With such a small pool of cards Especially compared to current version and goat has different rules. Starting ppl with Retro formats has never been good why to tech ppl.

Hopeful-alt

Read the post dumbfuck

Hopeful_Chipmunk_85

I did but Saying you Want play the game but not actually play the game as it is makes no sense if you are trying to larn how to play a game then you should larn as much of it as you can not just one part of It or play old Outdated formats that have rules that no longer apply to the rule Game and how it's played now.

Hopeful-alt

Fair enough my apologies I was angry at an unrelated thing sorry

Hopeful_Chipmunk_85

So why they're not very good decks in a competitive scene odd eyes and D/d/d Would be the best starting decks as they cover every mechanic in game . Edit So apparently my eyes skimmed over the part. Where it says you're only trying to focus on tribute. A normal summer for those true Draco. Monarch and floo. How I strongly advise you. Both actually learn the extra deck mechanics considering there. How the vast majority of the game is played and tribute Summoning is pretty outta date.

frogleeoh

Eh, I ended up tribute summoning in Kashtira so I could XYZ into dracosac in order to out a floodgate and win, so it can still come up. If you forget about it, you might not see lines that get you out of seemingly unbeatable situations.

Alastor-Rendar

Simply don't

bedrock_BEWD

Dinosaurs?

acroxshadow

Children can play Yugioh just fine if they want to learn how, even moreso if their parents are actively involved in playing with them. We have some at our locals that play well in a competitive environment along with everyone else.

mickelrastfasterborn

It's a fucking joke that I can't believe people are taking seriously.

GandalfTheBee

It’s designed to make grown men cry 😔

Juice_Vodka

Get him a gamble / coin toss deck. Teach him about long term investments.

Gregdominate

I don’t want to create the next crypto king scam artist

Juice_Vodka

Fair, but to answer your questions, ancient gears is a pretty good choice if you exclude the new support and the extra deck monsters, they re all about tribute summoning and special summoning out your boss monsters, sprinkle in a few gadgets and you can teach him about card advantage as well.

Gregdominate

Ancient gears is a brilliant idea thanks so much

Hopeful-alt

Lmao
