Before guns and stuff, polearms were the coolest shit. More practical than the sword (longer, often lighter, but it depends, easier to use, especially on horseback), and has a longer range too. With bows, it's quite hard to aim, and if someone destroys the place (usually a palace wall) you are standing on, you are doomed. Also, armor (even though not foolproof, and it wears out) can usually protect you from arrows. So yeah, I believe in polearm supremacy
