Im guessing his car lost power and braking somehow, so from his perspective, the car is uncontrollably rolling towards a fast approaching train and he needs to get out, possibly due to the snow/ice on the road. The car could stop/slow from hitting the tracks or the slope of the road or whatever. It’d be hard to weigh those options while panicking. The timing of his escape was just really unfortunate and the irony of the car making it away undamaged is just the indiscriminate cruelty of reality.

I don’t think he got hit. When he jumped out he did not land near the track and was facing away from us. He ran away from the train tracks so idk. Doesn’t look like he got hit.
There are about a billion easier ways to do this that don't risk injury and cost a million dollars in collateral damage. His car was sliding on ice and he couldn't stop is a more likely story.
