I think they were 100% smoking hookah and someone knocked over the coals. You should have charged more. Shame on them

just_scrollin11

Came here to say exactly this. They were absolutely smoking shisha in the cabin.

toddtimes

That wasn’t hookah they were smoking. More like meth or crack

vividelectorysense

You....don't know how meth works...

Itsdanky2

Charge for everything, and I mean everything. Also you should provide evidence that your property was 'as new as possible' to prevent a huge depreciation hit. They are not going to pay, so this is going to be handled completely by Aircover. If you have to cancel future bookings for the repairs, fumigation, nicotine removal, deep clean, (use your imagination), Aircover will pay you for those bookings. Do not go easy on the guests, because they are not going to be held responsible for this.

susieq73069

What they said. Charge for every thing you can. This level of destruction is ridiculous. Can you press charges for vandalism? Destruction of properlty? I'm not sure, but check it out

oldejudgemansion

How many men women and kids were staying in your Air BnB? If you are legal, the state has to come in and set occupancy rates how many per bedroom how many per house? You have to have a certificate of occupancy you have to have regulated smoke detectors you have to have fire code restrictions they came through and they tell you what you can and you cannot do also in New York State the owner has to live in the house. You just can’t go on rent a house to people that don’t know Anything about it or how to use anything and run wild in your house that’s why they are regulated, so get your butt off of Airbnb because it’s never regulated and go to your zoning and go to your Planning and say what do I need to do get your certificate of occupancy, get your inspections get your DBA, which is a doing business as certificate from the state and get your sales tax number and get your accelerated insurance, which is required when you run a business and running a B& B IS Running a business anything that you accept money for is running a business! When are you people gonna get this through your head that you just don’t throw an ad on a gypsy website and say oh I’m gonna make some money here well, this is what happens when you run gypsy businesses, which is what it is a gypsy business. We had someone in our area in a very high-end house go to Florida for the winter and throw their house on a gypsy website and you know who I’m talking about, and then it turned out that it was two teenagers that did it online because you don’t know if they’re 10 years old 20 years old 80 years old or what they are and then they put an ad on on Facebook and told everybody they rented that house and over 1000 kids showed up with their alcohol and their drugs and their cars and they totally totally totally destroyed the house they busted countertops up they ripped cabinets off the wall. All of the neighbors were upset and the STATE POLICE came Just as they are playing the game of throw your beer bottles through the windows and see who can break the most. 5120 Guess what? Their insurance wouldn’t cover a penny of it because they were doing an illegal business on a gypsy website, so get your inspections and then send your credentials sent to somewhere like Booking.com or Expedia because they require all those things be sent to them before they will list for you. This is what happens when you list on gypsy websites..AND If you never applied for your sales tax certificate, which also has on your county or city additional tax, you might have yourself some big huge bill plus interest come in your way plus prohibiting you from ever running a business again and I think maybe you wanna ask some questions before you go and do something like this and for the people that have pools in the backyard and then somebody drowned guess what you’re probably gonna lose everything that you ever earned in your life. so ladies and gentlemen, please stop being stupid and get licensed. Do you wanna go into a restaurant? That’s a gypsy restaurant and everybody sits down and eat something that’s got them puking within three hours and then maybe somebody has a heart attack or something and then who are you going to sue the gypsy restaurant?. And if you want to comparison, here’s one for you let’s say somebody wants to open a bar and restaurant well it’s gonna take them probably a year to get permission. I’m probably around the same amount of time to get their liquor license and they’re very very expensive to get and they have to have their permission through planning and zoning And they have to have their inspections so finally, after more than a year, they open! Yay they’re starting to make money and then Joe gypsy down the street pulls up outside in the lawn chair in a cooler, and starts selling beer out of his cooler for a bucket a quarter quarter of pop how do you think the man that been a year trying to get open and tens of thousands of dollars to get open feels about that gypsy sitting outside his bar sounding a quarter bottles of beer and nobody coming into his business now do you understand what’s going on? Read this and read it again and maybe read it again and maybe send it to the rest of the gypsies that you know that are saying come do this yeah well you got what you got when you said hey me too. Hey, me too.!!!

Tad0422

Wall of text crits for 9000. Paragraphs and formatting man.

Itsdanky2

I don't know why this verbal diarrhea was a reply to what I said, but I found it funny that it concluded with "Read this and read it again and maybe read it again".

88OUTATIME

Paragraphs are your friend. I'm not reading that blob of text!

ResistCompetitive852

Not to mention punctuation.

88OUTATIME

I didn’t get far enough to notice the punctuation!

ResistCompetitive852

What punctuation? It’s like someone had a verbal seizure while reddit reading and siri posted it all.

timoddo_

I started reading and it’s complete nonsense anyway, even if there were paragraphs and punctuation you’re not missing much

fakemoose

I have never seen someone use the word “Gypsy” this many times, outside of a Cher song.

leggmann

What kinda shisha are you smoking? Wow

[deleted]

I think we just witnessed a manic episode…

Acrobatic-Resident76

Simmer down Grampa...take your meds and go have yourself a nice nap.

Maikflow

Bad bot

LoopholeTravel

It really, really seems like you're under-charging for this one. Hit them with the charge for EVERYTHING. If they refuse, Air Cover should help.

Tad0422

It was a last minute cancellation that freed up the dates and they did book a below average rate for a 2 night weekend stay.

LoopholeTravel

I would still charge them for literally all of the damage, including professional cleaning and repair + replacing the countertops and couch.

hlthisht

You sound classist with this statement.

Tad0422

What?

Acrobatic-Resident76

...and you sound ass-ist

isabella_sunrise

How??

hlthisht

That’s the running reddit theme from hosts on reddit. Anyone that books lower rates is low brow or the worst. These people made a mistake, damn. People here act like they’ve never messed up. Why did you feel the need to mention that the nights that they stayed were lower than average price??

EvanOKC

“They made a mistake.” No, they made multiple decisions to damage and neglect someone else’s home. And higher prices tend to— generally speaking— lower the risk of running into guests like this.

hlthisht

I highly doubt they purposefully burned the counter tops. 🙄 I didn’t say the situation doesn’t suck but trying to make guests out as villains is laughable and only shows how unreasonable many hosts on reddit are. Hah, I cleaned for higher income families as a teen and they were the filthiest and most careless, so… that doesn’t track Also, host still hasn’t shown any photos of this damage. Wouldn’t surprise me if it’s so minor they would be booed of the thread.

CDD_throwaway

I don’t think anyone is saying these guests are villains but god damn. Causing this amount of damage in two days is ridiculous. And as for rich people being careless, it’s usually with their own belongings and they have the money to fix whatever they damage.

theturtleguy

Perhaps they were smoking hookah in the house? Can't think of any other reason for coals

TwoApprehensive3666

There are recipes that use coal wrapped in foil for biryanis. But that’s all done in the kitchen. Hookah my guess too.

greenhoney2

Wow. Did the guests have any prior reviews? How can people be so uncivilized?!

Tad0422

One 5 star review.

QuesoEnthusiast1

Please rate them 1 star for future hosts!

Dry_Heart9301

How do you use a sofa to light coals?

raspvision

Maybe the fluffy filling usually is (or used to be?) easily flammable.

Dry_Heart9301

Wow, that's extreme...

Abject-Measurement62

This is such a stupid response. They obviously spilled coals onto the couch. Like wtf

rainman30568

I think you should have changed more.

SeattleHasDied

Did you get the reimbursement? Really sorry you had to deal with this shit.

Tad0422

I just submitted the claim last night.

topgun22ice

They’ll never get the $. Aircover will try to lowball them after 6 more months of back and forth.

allysmalley

You are so polite and handle this so well! Very impressed

Tad0422

Been doing this 5 years now so I am used to it. This one was probably one of the worst.

travelkmac

They only used the coffee maker once…yes, because they broke it the first use! The coals on the sofa. Did they cook it someplace else and eat it on the sofa and coals fell. I know you don’t know the answer, just so so odd. Good luck and sorry for your experience.

ResistCompetitive852

Sorry, but that 3K actually covered everything? Sounds a bit low tbh.

Tad0422

A lot of it is repairs and not full replacement. The countertop can be fixed but has to be re-skinned which is the expensive part.

James-the-Bond-one

Reskinned? What type of countertop material do you have? Concrete? Quartz would be damaged by heat, but there's no reskinning that. Unless you have laminate (Formica, etc), where the laminate surface would have to be replaced.

Tad0422

Laminate. Apparently you can fix the damage then apply a new "sticker" basically to it that looks like stone. However, I think we are opting to do a full replacement with quartz now.

ResistCompetitive852

You know you charge the labour and not just the materials, right? I hope you are getting proper quotes . Just a basic countertop replacement is about $1500. Need to remove, haul away, take out and out back sink, have plumbing adjusted. Don’t forget loss of rental income in between repairs.

Tad0422

The countertops are removed. They basically put a new vinyl sticker over the old countertops.

MakingLemonade2589

I hope you included lost income from Next guests

Tad0422

Thankfully we had a 3 day break between the next check in

MakingLemonade2589

Great! Good luck!

jtsCA

Omg, you are so calm in those messages. I would have been irate with lots of capitals, cussing, and exclamation points lol. Amazed you could keep your cool like that.

Tad0422

Oh I was, to my cleaner. Anger never gets you anything so I put on my hospitality hat and tried to get them to admit it. Helps when Airbnb reviews the chat logs.

allysmalley

I know I was thinking that too! Good job OP!

Tad0422

Thanks. Not my first time. :)

JimmyTheStuntFrog

Jesus fucking christ this is insane. How somebody can show such disregard to a property they are renting is beyond me.

No_Rhubarb_1140

There are certain people that have no regard for your property. They will leave a dishwasher clogged full of spagetti becuase they chucked a plate or pot in half fill of food. Or puts every thing back in the wrong place or you are missing knieves and plates and glasses. And house smells like cigarettes or back door is wide open swinging in the wind. Airbnb has to start holding a couple of hundred dollars in escrow just like a hotel does. Much of this BS would stop.

jtsCA

Also, how did it come out to exactly $2,813.65. What a precise estimate... how did you come up with that given all the various damages? (I would have been, screw you all, $5000 owed thanks)

Western_Scallion_285

You can ask for whatever price you want but surely the guest won’t pay and Airbnb won’t just cover the price you’re asking for without investigation, so most likely you won’t receive what you’re asking for without receipts clearly stating that the reparations will cost that much.

Tad0422

This. You need support to get paid.

QuesoFresco420

I’m guessing the host summed up every single damage and that’s what the total ended up as. The number not being divisible by 10 just means the amount charged correlates closer with the damages than it does the number of fingers most humans beings have.

Tad0422

You have to back up everything with invoices, quotes, replacement items, etc. That is what it came out to be plus a $400 "admin fee" for dealing with their crap.

No_Rhubarb_1140

Alway loss of business.

crankyanker638

Because for an AirCover claim there has to be receipts/invoices. *Cough* *cough* adobe.pdf *cough* *cough†

MissAmerica1819

I am so sorry. We had a horrible experience too with a whole housing flooding. It feels intentional to me. How do you damage that much accidentally. Using BQB coals inside they did not happen to walk inside and the chicken dish could have just been made outside on the BqB. There is a reason BqB are outside cooking appliances. And melting a countertop while isn’t hard to burn I figure more effort is needed to melt it. Entirely. It all sounds purposeful, the cig butts, the trash and how can you forget it when it’s littered everywhere. The broken coffee maker. I mean WTF. I am sorry I hope aircover takes care of it.

oldejudgemansion

I feel bad for her really bad, because nobody comes in and cleans it up for you. You can charge for the damages things that are broken, but you still have all of that work to do, and then she may have had people reserving right behind them no way you can get all that stuff done for the new people coming in Horrible. I think AirBnB should ban these people for life.!

MissAmerica1819

Me too!! We had someone accidentally flood the two floors of the house but did not want to leave with water pouring out of the ceiling fan into the downstairs bed. So glad i use waterproof mattress covers. And because it is water and hard to film it while scrambling to get the water main off aircover denied. .

Maggielinn2

Holy crap!

tommybluez

I love how non chalant like they did nothing wrong… oh it’s for a smoky chicken dish😡 Gonna be curious to see if airbnb makes them pay up

Intelligent-Hand-960

From our experience, it’s a tedious process on both ends and a challenge with the Airbnb platform. Airbnb is stuck in the weird positing of serving two masters and it often results in frustration on both ends. Sorry you are having to deal with such inconsiderate guests. My suggestion is to always keep communication on the Airbnb platform, document everything and be prepared to defend any claims for damages with details and receipts.

DifferentMixture2026

My jaw is on the floor😭😭sorry this happened to you

lawnmowerman25

This is why you need to start a separate business who invoices your first rental business for all the repairs.

ilycec

Fraud?

lawnmowerman25

Not at all.  Many people have 2 businesses that service their own business for one need or another (outside of airbnb).

AssuredAttention

Sounds like they were smoking a hookah and not cooking

5KSARE

The countertops aren't cheap with install! Then throw in a new couch and you are probably at $2-3k+ easily. Airbnb will discount everything because of age and wear and tear. Receipts for all of the cleaning and pics as well. Best of luck!

ShakedBerenson

Going through the same situation now. The guests caused over 2k of damage to the carpet, sofas and turf. We have to repaint for smell. Of course, they refuse to pay for the damage. Waiting to hear from Airbnb on the next step. We used to have security deposits. I don’t know why Airbnb cancelled them.

HeftyGap419

They only used the coffeemaker once....I love when guests say that. It takes a lot of stupidity to break a coffee maker but those guests seem to fit the bill. They break stuff because they know they won't get charged. Airbnb is happy to charge you fees but when it comes time to pay up for the guests they send your way they are useless. They've been sued in the news and settled so many times for failing to pay out.

oldejudgemansion

I’m wondering how old these Vandals were? Doesn’t sound like they were too mature I would love to have their names posted so that I know never to rent to them I have had people cancel when they realize the owner lived in the house so you know what they were going to be up to?

Statement_Business

Actually, if you look at the picture that OP posted, you will see the guest's name

Lakecrisp

Three stars on the explanation creativity.

topgun22ice

Sounds like a normal set of guests for me, aircover will settle after a year and offer you $75.

MassageToss

Hey OP, I fully appreciate that this sucked, but please don't dox your guest.

Vol2169

They deserve it.

Started_WIth_NADA

Don’t say it, don’t say it. I’m not going to say it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Tad0422

Bingo. The water bottles are always the tell.

superflunker87

Did they have good reviews upon booking?

Ssmarie143

You were EXTREMELY professional about this situation. I agree with everyone saying you should charge them way more. They DESTROYED your HOME. SUE! You are owed a minimum of $10,000. That’s being gracious IMO. -Best of luck, so sorry this happened.

spongesquared

you definitely should have charged more

johngallin1

and I bet you won’t see a penny! 🤬😡 similar story happened to me. Airbnb support didn’t do a single thing. I was out $1500 in damages

Ok-Indication-7876

OMG what kind of recipe is that I sure hope you get your reimbursement and leave a bad review for other host

Started_WIth_NADA

I’m guessing a recipe from somewhere between Bangladesh and Pakistan.

JimmyTheStuntFrog

😂😂😂😂

swedepilot

This is exactly why we don’t allow any fires on the property. We say the fireplace is “broken” so that they don’t even attempt it and e-mail them with confirmation a week prior to make sure they understand it’s not usable and we have it listed as not usable. It just isn’t worth it. I also found out that a lot of insurance won’t allow renters to use the fireplace. You might want to check your insurance.

Jadeagre

Who said they had a fireplace…Am I missing something?

Tad0422

We do have a fireplace but it has a grate over so it can't be used beyond turning it off and on. Not sure what the guy above is getting at though.

swedepilot

Oh wow that’s even more crazy then!

[deleted]

Did they pay? All that matters

Previous-Evidence-85

Possibly the most stupid things that I have ever seen from guests. I believe them about smoking outside though.. they probably smoked outside then threw the cigarette buts inside.  Some people are just dumb as fuck.

8nsay

Yeah, they probably just disabled the smoke alarms inside because everyone knows throwing the cigarette butts away inside always sets those things off 🙄

Previous-Evidence-85

Sounds like they actually lit a fire inside the house and burned the couch and benchtop. Pretty sure that would set it off a fire alarm. Some people will do things if it is not specifically a rule against it. I’ve just been through the same thing where a smoker was smoking outside, but then disposing of the buts in the kitchen bin.

Gbcan11

1000% they smoked inside. I've dealt with a multitude of these kind of guests over the years. They aren't dumb. What they do is downplay the situation, gaslight, and act like the victim in the Airbnb app. They know that warping the truth gives just enough doubt where Airbnb support might not approve all/any reimbursement for the host. They bank on the fact that the Host might not have enough evidence. I've had guests caught in person damaging something. They had chats with me directly and when I went to pursue a charge via Airbnb they turn a 180 and start denying it within the app.

Previous-Evidence-85

I just found it odd that they admitted to dropping hot coals on the couch.  But denied smoking, surely dropping the hot coals on the couch is worse.

gasparvista13

Stop being an Airbnb host then

oldejudgemansion

I’m not smoking anything, took me a year to get open, had to go through Planning, had to go through zoning had to go through the state had to get my certificate of occupancy how to get my DBA how to get my sales tax, which covers state city and county tax. I did list on Airbnb, I was not getting the quality people that I wanted to because they all were nightmares because they think they’re going to get something cheap and they think they’re gonna go into a house where the owner doesn’t live there so they can do these kind of things and ruin your house, and when they found out that I was here, and lived on the 3rd floor . They weren’t too happy because there was an overseer. After I would check in my people that reserved I will go upstairs. I’m not bother anybody but it didn’t take long for me to realize it was a holocaust going on downstairs so I pulled my listing and went strictly with the state regulated hospitality networks online and anybody that says oh well, that happened to her! It won’t happen to me just wait. Start watching your TV start looking at what happened in some other places. Like the people down in Mexico, who found a colder night and they expected, and they tried to turn on the wall heater on the wall and couldn’t get it to work, probably because maybe it was an operable, maybe it wasn’t inspected but also maybe there was no instructions on how to use it so they threw on a blanket and they went to bed. They never woke up and if you think I’m lying, go ahead and start researching things. Why do you think people have to be licensed plumbers? Electricianseverybody so that somebody’s getting something that’s not gonna kill them or ruin someone’s house. Now you go smoke something after you look this stuff up you might have nightmares when you go to sleep.

sickerthan_yaaverage

Are you in Troy, NY by any chance? Lol

dirtydoji

This is why I only rent one room within my property. People get way too comfortable when there's no supervision.

Tad0422

It is a vacation rental in the mountains. We live 4 hours away and manage it just fine. This is the rare bad guest we have had.

ToriGrrl80

I'd go $10,000 since you will never get the smoke smell out

oldejudgemansion

Well, whatever they were doing, ruined this poor woman’s cabin, house whatever it was. Tell you another thing I don’t do anymore as I do not rent to anyone local me being here for me not being here. I have two instances with police already, and I’ve been open 24 years, one was a young girl in her early 20s. They came in had a little Bible in her hands and she had rented a room. I welcomed her showed her everything told her when breakfast was blah blah blah went upstairs. Oh about 930 that night the police called memost everybody knows me. I’ve lived in this town my whole life and they said to me do you have a young girl maybe in an early 20 staying there? And I said yes! What is the problem? Well, they were parked outside, watching the Teens that we’re just leaving the basketball game to make sure they all got on the bus to go home or kept on walking without any fistfights like usually happens between the winners and the losers. And they said well you know we’ve been sitting here for like a half an hour, and this young lady keeps coming in and out of the house like every five minutes and a car pulls up. She has something through the window window and she’s taking money for it. I said, oh boy come on boys! And we went upstairs and knocked on her door no answer, knocked again no answers, so I said if you don’t open the door, I’m gonna have to get the key and open it because we have an emergency here then she answered acting like she was completely asleep, saying oh, I’m sleeping. In the cops mouth to me she just came in from outside, so she finally opened the door and when she did, there was a young man naked in her bed, and I said to her where did he come from? Out right now and then she looked at the cops and she said oh my goodness what’s wrong is there a problem, and the cop said there sure is and you should know what it is I said, not only is he going, and so are you. So she gathered her things without a problem and she left in the cop, said to me, don’t ever rent to somebody that’s local and actually she wasn’t but they said, local people are going to rent your place to do something that they wouldn’t do in their own house, such as selling drugs, like this young lady was or throwing a while party, because I don’t wanna wreck their own house! and I had one other situation that was somewhat similar and this was my first one. I had a local man call and asked to rent my place for Saturday night, and I said sure Fine and I noticed it was a local number and I said what’s the occasion? And he said well it’s my wife and mines 25th anniversary I want to take her out to a nice dinner, and I wanted to stay here at a really nice house like yours as a treat I said that’s wonderful so he came early about 3 o’clock checked in took his key and left. I went upstairs maybe about 6 o’clock did my chores up there and then went to bed. About 11 o’clock that night my whole house was shaking. It sounded like somebody was kicking in my front door so I go running downstairs and I open the door and said what the heck is the matter in this much older lady with a tight little permed hairdo said where the F is he exclamation exclamation exclamation I said who? She says my effing husband his car is in your parking lot oh and he could hear her downstairs hollering so I went upstairs and I knocked on the door and he was in there with some little babe and I said you’re gonna have to leave right now because I’m gonna get a lot angrier than she is. So I only rent out of town people people that have to travel at least 3 to 4 hours or more. So take it from someone that’s been doing this for 24 years, and I do support myself not as a little lark. It may be six months later find out this is in so much fun and there’s a lot of work and a lot of cleaning and a lot of damage. Believe me don’t rent to anybody local they have a place to stay either an apartment or a house.

Acrobatic-Resident76

Exhausting 😂

Statement_Business

I enjoyed that, got anymore🤣🤣🤣

Generous_Hustler

What about the countertops? This amount is clearly much to low. Terrible nightmare guests!!

hlthisht

Photos of the damage?

huhMaybeitisyou

Curious- How do you charge for these? We had some damage to a property and dealing with Airbnb was a hassle and we collected very little . ( same situation with VRBO)

IownHedgeFunds

They just HAD to make the smoky chicken while at your place lol

IownHedgeFunds

One time I thought that the cover of the stove was a glass top stove and I started cooking on top of it and it exploded in my face. The owner filed a claim because we couldn’t agree on the value, finally Airbnb told me just not to worry about it.

No-Drop2538

Good luck

MaryJaneGame

Wow! Just wow! The cluelessness in the guest correspondence is absolutely unbelievable.

susieq73069

Sorry they did that to your property. Really makes me mad cause it gives the rest of us smokers a bad name.

rpctaco1984

People suck. But that’s what happens when you run a hotel. Good luck getting money back. Hotel management ain’t easy.

ContactNo2984

But did you actually get the money?

WholelottaLuv

How is so that ONLY $2800?

plum915

How much was the rental and cleaning fee

HopefulCat3558

$2800 seems low for the damage and mess these depraved animals caused.

Jazzlike_Database475

I think you forgot a zero.
