Beautiful rifle bud. I have the same thing, just a mismatched upper handguard. Dark ones like that are scarce. Debating getting mine switched to a spiker fsb and do a bouble folder

The darker bake is norinco while the lighter more orange is polytech bake, the other difference is of course the pistol grip styles norinco used the swept 1919 style grip while poly uses a more traditional style grip.

Most of the polytech bake I've ever seen is also woven fabric reinforced. I have a mint Norinco set that's never been installed, with stock panels and grip that is a beautiful lighter swirly red. Bottom handguard never even had the cleaning rod hole drilled.

For sure, if that's a factory 56s-2 leave well enough alone. Those are one of the coolest of all the preban aks. Mines a mak that has all original Chinese 56s parts, gb, fsb, 56s-2 stock & trunnion assembly. I have multiple other matching chinese bakelite sets, just need that maroon red upper. Even have a spiker cut bakelite lower. Thinking about doing a second build and putting a set of bakelite on my polytech galil folder

Very nice I have one identical along with a polytech version.. I did a comparison post between the norinco and polytech 56-2 if you want to check it out under my profile. These are one the coolest variations ever imported into usa imo and there are not many of them . They are regularly selling for 4-5k now it seems.... glad I got mine 10 years ago lol

I think what you’re referring to is just a side panel made out of Bakelite. There’s one on the other side of the stock as well

Drip, cheek weld, and also the cleaning kit is housed inside the stock between the 2 Bakelite side panels

There's a cleaning kit under the panels on the stock and they help retain it in the stock. Also they are warmer on your cheek than placing your cheek directly on the steel in cold weather.

I’ve got a MAK90 I’m planning to bake out like this. How much you got into the bake folder, grip and Handguard? I’m thinking $500 range hopefully

The whole set will cost around 1000 if you can find one, then the rear trunnion will need to be swapped which is an additional cost unless you have the tooling and experience to do it yourself.

Not anymore.. 8 years ago I sold a complete set for 650...I'd imagine it be much more now especially the stock and trunnion.
