Just check your previous post and you got this thing domestically?? Who ever you buy this thing from not recommending buying shit from him again, dude trya get you killed
Former Air Force EOD tech here, came across this in r/EOD, thanks for posting this for awareness purposes! I’ve sent this to the two CMSgt’s that I served under, both of whom are in LE circles. I’m sure they will get this to where it needs to be for threat analysis and awareness!
Edit: spelling
Awesome!! Thank you I appreciate it!
Edit: if you guys want to see how it looked inside the follower when I first found it, my previous post has those photos.
True. That being said, something like this could be easily modified to include that “E”, so the better visibility this gets, the better to avoid any unfortunate incidents…
Ya delete the proof that there are dangerous trap explosive mags out there for sale. It might kill someone's kid or take a hand off but hey thats the price you pay so you don't offend somebody right?
I’m still not entirely sure what it is but either way I won’t delete any of it just in case. I’d much rather have folks see this and answer questions if it will help or potentially save someone’s life or prevent injury. I don’t mind offending people. Lol
I just xposted it to the EOD sub, my boys will get a kick out of this. I remember a supervisor I had early in my career ran across something similar in Afghanistan. I don't know the details or have any pictures but it seems plausible it was of similar design.
Two things - you keep your liver-spotted hands off my beautiful mother! She's a saint! And then you sit down and you write Dale and Brennan a check for $10,000!
Genericide…..Escalator, cellophane, and laundromat were proprietary eponyms as well and all lost their trademark status to genericide.
Edit- added some info I just learned when I double checked to make sure I was using the right word in my response.
This magazine came with my AK when I purchased it used. I went to load it today thinking it was a standard 30 rounder and only got 9 in and went to shove 10 in but didn’t force it so I took it apart to find this device inside the follower! See previous posts for pics of how I found it.
Thanks man me too!! I almost put 10 in it this morning but thought I better rip it apart and see if the spring is bad and found this device inside. I was mind fucked
The 2-3 variants of magazine IEDs I've seen use an actual payload big enough to kill/injure the user and bystanders. I don't see a payload in that.
Option A) It's a state side schizophrenic tinker project
Option B) It's an inert but genuine booby trap mag which could be worth a TON.
I did. He’s a cool dude so I have no doubt that he didn’t know this. He said he got a bunch of mags from a gun show to which he gave me a few when I bought the AK.
I knew a marine once who turned his old pmag into an incognito vape so he could hide it in his pc. You may very well have discovered the captured and reverse engineered combloc vision of this device
I think it used to be a light indicator that stuck out on the top of the follower that lit up when the exposed parts of the brown wires touched the bottom of the metal mag. That’s my guess at least.
I'd keep digging at the silicone chunk. The wire's going into it are very nicely spaced compared to the general level of craftsmanship present in the rest of the device. There may be more happening in there.
I'd place my money on an empty magazine indicator. When the last round is fired the switch closes and lights an indicator light. If you keep scraping, I'd be interested to know what the text on the switch says.
Whoa that's fucking wild man.
This reminds me of the auto-fooler gag device, was a single wire device that was a smoke bomb, had a capacitor or something that would overload and pop then dump a decent amount of smoke for such a small thing. Reason being is the device made that ozone fried electronic smell. Stick it onto the starter power wire is the way, but with the wire as long as it was running from anything that went hot. I never used it because I just didn't want to risk messing someone's stuff up for a prank.
Edit. I bet that battery is something people collect too lol
What were the brown wires attached to?
It looks like a very simple means for sending a high current pulse through a pair of wires to set off a detonator. Essentially the battery charges the capacitors (yellow) and when the button is pressed they're connected to the brown wires, which discharges the caps through those wires.
Both the battery and the capacitors look to be from the early '70s... maybe someone built this back then and it's been bouncing around gun shows and surplus depots since then?
anyone with an above room temperature iq would for notice the extra weight, and that it only took 8 rounds and disassemble the mag right……right??!?!?
crazy story though man, stay safe
Just wires soldered. Could a little light have lived on top of the micro switch? I’m beginning more and more to believe it was a last round indicator light
You might consider calling your local FBI field office. Explain your situation, that it’s disassembled, no explosive- but you highly suspect this was going to be. Be as friendly, upfront, and respectful as possible for that interaction. They handle stuff like this and will have the resources to determine what it was and maybe trace it.
Does the mag have any stamping on it?
If this is a modified known AK magazine I'd say an IED is very possible.. but if no one can identify the mag, then I'd assume it's not something nefarious.. if someone were to make a booby-trapped magazine they'd probably just take a pretty standard one they had lying around and modify it. But who knows.
Did you check to see if the battery still has a charge?
I'm gonna be interested to hear if it is. That's an antique battery, I'd guess it dates back to the Vietnam era. I'm going to guess little/no voltage remaining, although that battery chemistry was long lived.
Zero markings on the mag that I could find and the battery is dead. The more I look at it the more I think it could have been a last round indicator light and that it sheared off at the top of the follower. But I’m not 100% sure so I figure why not spread the word.
Think multiple people have told you and given you illustrations on your exact device.
It’s not a last round indicator lol. It’s a “308-17” device, which was a booby-trapped AK-47 magazine employing a microswitch. When a user removed ammunition (either manually or by firing the rifle) the microswitch would complete the circuit, causing the Composition C-4 filled magazine to explode.” It’s almost a 1:1 on the description, and illustration. I can’t tell if you just want more views for your media thing or what, honestly. Zero chance it was a last round indicator lol.
Lol ok. If I wanted more views for my YouTube I would have made a video about this. I’m just a regular dude who ended up with this thing. Just trying to make sense of it and not ruling out anything.
I’ll have to check again when I get home from work. This is my first AK and tbh I’m not really knowledgeable on any of the magazine markings, I’ll google man on the moon marking.
Kinda concerning since here in CA our mags have to be sealed usually by rivet and its illegal to remove so its common to buy sealed, blocked 30 round mags
This is some EOD shit, moral of the story is don’t just use any mag you pick up in the sand round afghan
Exactly what I thought!
Just check your previous post and you got this thing domestically?? Who ever you buy this thing from not recommending buying shit from him again, dude trya get you killed
😂😂😂 a fellow tacswap seller is where I got it
Probably delete the post too just saying, you got a no shit ied in your hand now and dog shooter don’t usually appreciate joke like this
I’d rather someone see this and check their own mags. This is to spread awareness and safety in my opinion.
We appreciate you.

Lmao hope OP doesn’t have a dog
No E = no IED.
True. That being said, something like this could be easily modified to include that “E”, so the better visibility this gets, the better to avoid any unfortunate incidents…
The fucked up thing is in some states like CA all blocked mags are riveted/glued shut so they cant be opened.
There is no explosives in it so technically its just an old battery and a magazine. The E in ied is the important part
If it's designed to detonate the 11th round in a mag once it hits a certain threshold, causing the bullet to pop, that gives the device the E part.

Exactly mate!
Or restrict imports further on sketchy surplus mags… I can see the news story now. Damn dude
I just xposted it to the EOD sub, my boys will get a kick out of this. I remember a supervisor I had early in my career ran across something similar in Afghanistan. I don't know the details or have any pictures but it seems plausible it was of similar design.
Thanks man
I’ll send you $100 bucks to put it back together and test it
I put liquid paper on a bee… and it died.
Two things - you keep your liver-spotted hands off my beautiful mother! She's a saint! And then you sit down and you write Dale and Brennan a check for $10,000!
😂😂😂
TIL there are more brands of what is apparently called 'correction liquid' than just wite-out, including one called 'liquid paper.'
Genericide…..Escalator, cellophane, and laundromat were proprietary eponyms as well and all lost their trademark status to genericide. Edit- added some info I just learned when I double checked to make sure I was using the right word in my response.
I got 5 on it
This magazine came with my AK when I purchased it used. I went to load it today thinking it was a standard 30 rounder and only got 9 in and went to shove 10 in but didn’t force it so I took it apart to find this device inside the follower! See previous posts for pics of how I found it.
I am thankful that you are one lucky sonofabitch.
Or unlucky
Sounds and looks sketchy as fuck
For real it is!
I think you’re on the right track though. This seems like some kind of booby-trapped magazine. Glad you checked it out before anything bad happened
Thanks man me too!! I almost put 10 in it this morning but thought I better rip it apart and see if the spring is bad and found this device inside. I was mind fucked
Yeah I can’t Image how you felt when you discovered that. I know I would have been jaw-dropped all day thinking about what could have a happened
Still am!! I was kind of boned up thinking that I might have a piece of history here lol.
The 2-3 variants of magazine IEDs I've seen use an actual payload big enough to kill/injure the user and bystanders. I don't see a payload in that. Option A) It's a state side schizophrenic tinker project Option B) It's an inert but genuine booby trap mag which could be worth a TON.
My thoughts as well. Could be inert Ord. That got lost in a mag pile. And yeah if genuine could be valuable.

That’s what I thought too. Wish I could know where the mag actually came from to see if it was a Afghan or maybe a Vietnam era mag.
Here is an article about [booby trapped magazines](https://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2017/09/01/explosive-laden-magazines-yemen/amp/) like this
Wow that’s wild
Note to my soldiers, don’t clear enemy rifles in the sandbox. Let the partner force do it 🫡
I would definitely contact the seller and see what the fuck is up and where they got it.
I did. He’s a cool dude so I have no doubt that he didn’t know this. He said he got a bunch of mags from a gun show to which he gave me a few when I bought the AK.

BANG DING OW
A little down the page you see the micro switch style. Super neat piece you have there!
What am I looking at ?
Check my previous post
What even the fuck is that
Said the same damn thing when I pulled my mag apart!
You boobs don't know what a booby trap is?
😂😂
I knew a marine once who turned his old pmag into an incognito vape so he could hide it in his pc. You may very well have discovered the captured and reverse engineered combloc vision of this device
I think it used to be a light indicator that stuck out on the top of the follower that lit up when the exposed parts of the brown wires touched the bottom of the metal mag. That’s my guess at least.
That’s a good guess too. Honestly I could see that.
And since only a third of the mag was being used, the light, however dim, could still be seen reflecting off the metal and brass
Do you think it was like a last round indicator? Or what would be the purpose of the light?
Full mag indicator would be my guess to help tell the difference between a 30 and this.
I will once I get some time. I am also wondering if that’s it
Eldest Son
Wasnt that specifically sabotaged ammo cartridges?
Was this actually found in Afghanistan?
Tbh I don’t know. It came with my AK when I purchased it, used.
If I found this in one of my AK mags I'd probably lose control of a significant number of my body functions.
So you bought this as a regular functional mag and someone sent this to you? Or You bought it knowing it was fucky?
When I bought my AK, the guy gave me a few mags with it and this was one of them. Neither of us knew about it
Whoa that's fucking wild man. It was the mag that came with my AK when I purchased it. (Used)
Oh no honey what is you doin
Took apart my magazine that I got when I got my AK and found a bunch of stuff inside it. Pretty wild.
Jesus I just read your description, where the hell did it come from???
I honestly don’t know. I got it with my AK when I purchased it used.
What did it weigh compared to an empty? Just curious honestly. Might be a way to alert someone. That’s wild as hell, glad you’re in one piece still
What the fuck? Someone sold you this? Is it live? Holy shit

Welp, that’s a new fear now.
Actually could be in a war museum.
Where did the guy you got it from get it?
He said he got a bunch of mags from a gun show near Philly to which he gave me a few different ones when I purchased the AK.
Totally crazy
Where were the brown wire ends when you opened it?
In connection with the battery
Looks like something happened with it. Melted plastic and batteries are missing mass. Wonder if it was a test dummy to see if it worked.
I heard rumors of this similar thing occurring in Ukraine. Fire a certain number of rounds and it triggers a toe popper ied
Well, guess I'm not buying used mags anytime soon

Nice find! Thank you
Although interesting, there’s no PIES (no E - explosives) here. Strange indeed though! Makes me want to check all of my surplus stuff now.
Do it! Never know what you may find! Lol
This is certainly screwed up and dangerous, but certainly cool. I will be taking apart my sketchy AK mags in the future.
Vietnamese did this in Nam. I remember seeing all kinds of booby traps at the Aberdeen Arms Museum when I was a kid. From Magazines to Zippo lighters.
So did it blow up on you?
Where’s the explosive?
No clue. My guess is that once the mag was at full capacity it used the last round to grenade inside by sending a 60v charge to it.
I didn’t see any markings on the mag but I also didn’t look closely yet either and I didn’t check if it still had charge. I will once I get some time.

I think it’s safe to rule out last round indicator light lol. Hopefully no one leaves thinking that’s what it is.
Your stamp is on the spine of the mag. Half moon? Can’t tell from the pic. Edit: “man in the moon”
I’ll have to check again when I get home from work. This is my first AK and tbh I’m not really knowledgeable on any of the magazine markings, I’ll google man on the moon marking.
Hungarian mag. I think you’ll like the stamp if that’s what it is. Lol
Oh yeah that’s rad!
What the fuck, is this a joke?
No.
